Packers Release LB Victor Aiyewa

Aiyewa's release leaves one spot open on the Packers' 90-man offseason roster.

The Green Bay Packers released linebacker Victor Aiyewa on Wednesday, according to the league's transaction wire.

By releasing Aiyewa, the Packers have opened up one spot on their 90-man offseason roster, although no corresponding pick-up was announced.

Observers might be quick to draw a connection between Aiyewa's release and the recent visit by Jermichael Finley to team headquarters, and something could certainly be in the works but nothing would appear to be imminent.

Aiyewa's release comes on the first day of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) in Green Bay.

The Packers currently have six inside linebackers on their roster, including A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, Jamari Lattimore, Sam Barrington, along with undrafted rookies Jake Doughty and Joe Thomas.

Aiyewa was signed as a free agent at midseason last year when injuries struck and both Barrington and Rob Francois were placed on injured reserve. He played in six games, including playoffs, and made five tackles on special teams, tied for sixth-most on the team.

Whichever direction the Packers decide to go, it probably won't take them long to fill the roster spot previously filled by Aiyewa. Traditionally, they not been prone to leave roster spots open for long following the NFL Draft.

Aiyewa is subject to waivers.
