Packers release Darrius Shepherd and Evan Baylis

The team is bringing up Tremon Smith from the practice squad to handle return duties.

The Packers are pulling the plug on the Darrius Shepherd experiment. (Letting that last punt roll down to the 2 yard line was undoubtedly the last straw)

No word on the other corresponding move, though Jace Sternberger or Ibraheim Campbell being activated to the 53 man roster is a good bet.

Doubt if Sternberger wiould get many opportunities, but Campbell will be a welcome addition.

Sternberger will be activated (IMO)... He's a 3rd round pick on a team where the TEs are nearly invisible. --- Why wouldn't he get many opportunities? ... Graham is past his prime, Tonyan can't practice without getting hurt & Lewis is Lewis.

If Sterny is open over the middle, AR will find him. --- Book it!

That's the way it should go down. Campbell has another week to claim a spot if Redmond can't hold his ground, or Burks.

I like Gutekunst's approach. They gave these guys a chance (1/2 a year). If they didn't shine enough or couldn't handle the speed then - next guy gets his chance.

Don't understand why Shep wasn't given an opportunity in the slot. He looked great in pre-season, is quicker than any receiver on the team not named Adams... I'm not sure this coaching staff has a good feel for WRs. Still playing Allison game 8 after seven absolutely worthless games is almost weird. At least Lazard is looking decent and may replace Allison this week. Allison should be cut. Give Josh Gordon a shot. Bring him in, let him learn the system, and if he's healthy you have a great receiver for the playoffs.

I have to agree with your assessment of Allison. For every good catch, he drops one he should have had. He knows the routes and Rodgers' seems to trust him, but catching the ball is iffy. I'm guessing Shep doesn't have good command of the routes and timing with Rodgers...that might come next year if he's still around. And still, you have to wonder if the big stage is too big for him the way he choked on those punts. Josh Gordon doesn't have the kind of "character" Gutey wants in the locker room -- you have to admit the team chemistry is better than ever. I know winning has a lot to do with that, but so do the guys' personalities.

You saw "Shep" in preseason & liked what you saw... MLF & staff have watched him preseason, 8 games into the season & especially in practice. --- He may not be ready for the NFL.... He may never be ready.

Allison has pretty much baffled everyone. -- He needs to clear his head & immediately improve in order to stay a Packer beyond 2019, IMO.

Gordon will be released from IR soon. --- He'll go through waivers.. GB has little chance at obtaining him through a waiver claim. --- I'm not sure Gute/MLF would want him. --- He's a high-maintenance player because of injuries & past substance-abuse violations.

I’m sure Shepard and Baylis will go back to practice squad.
I wonder if Steinberger will trade places with Tonyan. Not sure what Tonyan’s injury is, but it’s been awhile and doesn’t sound like he’s ready anytime soon.

Allison is not the answer. I have to admit that while he makes spectacular plays he also doesn't have strong enough hands to hold onto the ball.

Anyone know what Tonyan’s injury is?

Not specifically. Listed as a hip injury. He was a limited participant last week in practice and was listed as Doubtful. He was not active. Currently, Tonyan is listed as questionable for the Chargers game.

Yes, Doug, if he clears waivers.

Shepherd has hurt us three times already in 8 games. Adams is coming back with MVS, Kumerow, Allison and Lazard. That’s not a bad group.

Will Raven be eligible to come back this season and if so, when? Campbell will be a welcome addition but man, Raven sure seemed to be playing well. Almost a straw that stirs the drink type dude.

He is eligible to return in week 11, IIRC. That's GB's bye week. So he could play Nov. 24 against SF.

He is eligible now to be designated to return, in which case GB would have three weeks to let him practice and then decide whether to put him on the 53 for the SF game or place him on season-ending IR.

I for one am not not disappointed that Shepherd was released. He just wasn't getting the job done.

I would not give up on Shepard. Bring him back to the practice squad. I think the talent is there.

I saw this posted last week.

"Tonyan (hip) was a full participant for Wednesday's practice.
Tonyan missed Week 7 after sitting out practice Thursday and Friday of last week, but as evidenced by this news, appears on track for a return. Even though he's healthy, Tonyan will likely serve as the Packers' No. 3 tight end for Sunday's game against Kansas City behind Jimmy Graham (ankle) and Marcedes Lewis."

So, Tonyan should be able to play soon.

Let me help you guys with this. Clumsy = done awkwardly or without skill or elegance. That is the perfect definition of these recievers. Congratulation Gute. Next: hands of stone, No speed, and regression. Allison Changed! And Kumerow isn't what this team needs either. I sure don't blame Gute for backing off on giving away a 2nd rd. pick. There was a reason the experts wanted GB to take a wr. Look; we just can't play fan favorites with this.

I agree Shep wasn’t ready yet. He’s only a rookie undrafted free agent. He needs another year or two to get the seasoning he needs. Some guys develop slower. Can’t figure out Geronimo. He was awesome last year until he got hurt. Shows flashes this year. I think they stick with him and see if he comes out of his funk. Lazard is a future star. He just needs time to polish it. Kumerow has some of the best hands in the league. Not sure what that hands of stone comment is meant for. That doesn’t really apply to any of the receivers. I think the receiver corps is coming together, and just needs a little more time to gel as a group. have a little patience.
