Packers Practice Roundup: Day 3. July 27, 2019

Packers Practice Roundup, Day 3.  July 27, 2019.

Welcome to the practice roundup.  Saturday's practice was in shoulder pads and shorts.  Sunday's practice will be in full pads.  Here is a sampling of the tweets.

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Packers injury update: Tim Boyle: personal matter. Jamaal Williams: hamstring. Bryan Bulaga: veteran rest. Fadol Brown: calf, Crosby (Calf), Savage (teeth), Jackson, Donnerson, .  Demovsky
  • Corey Grant getting some run with the returners in individual ST periods.  Hodkiewicz
  • Jason Spriggs at right tackle with the 1s. Demovsky
  • Keke and Lancaster your #2 DL.  Uglem
  • [Vitale] running with first team KOR right now.  Hodkiewicz
  • Fake jet to Shep on that inside zone with Carson. I almost passed out. Uglem
  • With Darnell Savage Jr. still out, Josh Jones is the dimeback.   Wood
  • Pass rush group on 3rd and 8 (left to right) 52 97 55 91 Uglem
  • If you show 'Matt LaFleur bringing this play to Green Bay' - I will show you Mike McCarthy running that exact play... LaFleur isn't bring new plays to the Packers, he’s bringing an offensive identity/philosophy. I'm excited for the 'package of plays' rather than individual ones.  Ben Fennell
  • Early observation: if everyone’s healthy this is what Pettine wants: CB1: Alexander CB2: King NB: Tramon. Uglem

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Packers offense as a whole, and QB DeShone Kizer especially, is having its best day of camp. Kizer hit Kumerow in the numbers on a slant pass for another TD in red zone.  Wood
  • Hell of a pass from DeShone Kizer, placing a fade pass perfectly down left sideline. Good grab by J’Mon Moore, plucking the football over Ka’Dar Hollman’s helmet and staying inbounds. Two guys who want to flash more. Pretty impressive.  Wood
  • J’Mon Moore made a nice adjustment catch ball near sideline from Kizer in 2x coverage. Close of if his feet were done but side judge ruled catch.  Hodkiewicz [Same play as Wood above?]
  • J’Mon Moore stacking success. His best play as a Packer. Fantastic coverage by Tony Brown, Kizer throws him a beautiful 50/50 ball which J’Mon goes up and gets for a big touchdown. Awesome play by J’mon.  Herman
  • Shepherd drops a ball from Kizer over the middle that almost gets picked. First rough play for the offense, should’ve been a completion. Herman
  • Kizer to Trevor Davis for a nice sliding catch. Really nice day for Kizer today! Kizer to Trevor for another completion and another TD! Herman
  • Three straight red zone TDS for no 1 offense (though first was extended) passes to Jones Tonyan and then Graham on a goal line slant.  Hodkiewicz
  • Rodgers slinging it in third and goal drill. Threw TDS to Aaron Jones, Robert Tonyan and Jimmy Graham from 10, 6 and 4 yards. Tonyan with one-hand grab. Silverstein
  • Darrius Shepherd makes an excellent contested catch in traffic.  Uglem
  • Rodgers to Allison from slot for a TD off a slant from 25.  Hodkiewicz
  • Really nice job of Wilkins going through his progressions and finding Shepherd. Herman
  • Manny Wilkins just showed some arm strength, beating Natrell Jamerson on an out route to Allen Lazard. Jameson dove to break up the pass, but ball got to Lazard first. Touchdown.  Wood
  • Kizer hits J’Mon over the middle, nice play by 82!  Herman
  • Kumerow beats Alexander inside. TD on the slant from Kizer.  Uglem

Running Backs:

  • Dexter Williams with some serious juice on a run up the middle.  Herman
  • Dexter Williams has a legit first cut. Classic “put your foot in the ground and get upfield” in his game...  Nagler [I think same play as above]
  • Diving catch by Aaron Jones, short gain. Herman

Defensive Backs:

  • This defensive backfield is having a tremendous camp. Uglem
  • Amos w/ a run blitz for a tfl on Dexter.  Herman
  • Tramon Williams, working from the nickel, breaks up a pass from Kizer to Graham in back of end zone.  Hodkiewicz
  • Tramon breaks up a pass to Graham at the very last second.  Herman
  • Spectacular break on the ball by Kevin King. Uglem
  • Kizer finds EQ in the end zone against Josh Jones but held the ball for a while. Good coverage by the defense. Next play fantastic coverage by the defense and a huge jam at the Los by King. Offense tried to get the defense with a quick snap. Defense was ready and shut it down.  Herman
  • [Jmon Moore] just [Randy] Mossed Tony Brown for a gain of 20. Uglem

Linebackers:

  • Reggie Gilbert getting work as an interior rusher next to Gary. Uglem [Good or bad for Gilbert?]
  • Two players who have been really quiet so far: Jimmy Graham & Preston Smith. Herman
  • As was discussed during offseason program, James Crawford working exclusively with ILBs so far in camp.  Hodkiewicz
  • Curtis Bolton with a strip sack of Manny Wilkins, blitzed through the line like he was shot out of a cannon!  Herman
  • Manny Wilkins would’ve taken a Curtis Bolton sack there.  Uglem
  • Josh Jones with the first real tackle of a player as he throws Dexter Williams to the ground in red zone. A little stare down from Jones after as well.  Herman

Kicker:

  • Sam Ficken makes all four kicks on short FGs between 25 and 37 yards against no rush. He’s now 6-of-8 so far in camp. Demovsky
  • Sam Ficken 4-4 on short FGs (25, 30 LH, 33, 37 RH).  Hodkiewicz

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • it never gets old watching David Bakhtiari pass block. Just absorbs and neutralizes anything coming at him. Which he did twice vs. Za’Darius Smith. Not many guys 69 can’t block.  Wood
  • Za’Darius Smith just powered through Jason Spriggs for a pressure, Rodgers gets pass off to MVS who drops the slant. Had a 1/2 step on Jaire.  Herman
  • Kenny Clark with another massive stuff on 3rd down of Aaron Jones. Dude is so impressive.  Herman
  • Who knows what it means until it’s live tomorrow [and in full pads] but defense won run-game still. Huber
  • Big time run stuff by James Looney, huge camp for him, athletically gifted freak who has yet to put it together. Summers was in on the last run stop as well and now chalks up another “tackle.”  Herman
  • Kenny Clark sack through Taylor.  Herman
  • Rashan Gary with another flash play as he powers through for a run stop, would’ve been a big TFL.  Herman

Overall:

Day 3 standouts: DeShone Kizer Trevor Davis David Bakhtiari J’Mon Moore Curtis Bolton Kenny Clark Ty Summers Geronimo Allison.  Herman

Far fewer tweets by the accredited media types (presumably they want fans to pay to read all their coverage) than in previous years.  I selected J'mon Moore for the photo for this article.

Don't want to jinx anything, but it's fantastic to hear J'mon is making plays. If he ascends it would be like having a mini Davante Adams.

Sternberger seems to be having a quiet start so far, no?

Unfortunate to see the Packers with hamstring injuries again this year. Two players out with them already (Williams and Donnerson).

I'm excited. I know it's just Packers vs. Packers, but I got a good feeling about this.
I'm already on record here in predicting the Pack at 10-6 -- which I think makes the playoffs.
Tough to give up on young quarterbacks, with NFL history showing late bloomers such as Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Terry Bradshaw. Steve Young. Doug Flutie, Vinny Testaverde, Rich Gannon. Alex Smith and Nick Foles.
Meanwhile, It seems the competition for wide receiver is magnificent.

The packers over haul from Gutekunst never stops. Dorsey and Schneider do this also. Ron Wolfe’s team building vision is right in front of packers fans. We are just starting our climb back to the top of the mountain. If anyone thinks the sky is falling and we are going to stink think again. Elite QB and a great supporting staff and a championship caliber defense. This team looks more like the 90’s packers with the talent.

They are giving Spriggs every opportunity. It will be interesting to see if he starts losing snaps to younger guys.

And has been a total disappointment for first 3 years. If he hasn't figured it out by now, he's not going to and we'll need to find someone better quickly.

The average NFL career is 3.3 years. So if he makes it to September... And a number of folks here were ripping on me a few weeks ago for still giving Spriggs hope while saying Nijman's college tape was pretty mediocre so... Where's the Nijman?

I expected them to run Spriggs hard early in camp. Gives others a chance to focus while really testing whether he has stepped up.

I am hopeful Spriggs DOES lose those snaps. He is what he is at this point, frankly I do not think his spot on the 53 is safe. He is a mediocre swing tackle who will have serious issues blocking speed rushers, always.

Let's hope the fragile Spriggs that has been trampled to the ground now grows into a mighty oak of protection on our offensive line.
