Packers Practice Roundup: Day 2. July 26,2019.

Packers Practice Roundup for July 26, 2019.

Here is a sampling of the various reports regarding day two of training camp.  I have done this a little differently by using more headlines to separate the tweets.

Injuries, Usage, Formations and Personnel:

  • Coach Matt LaFleur says OLB Kendall Donnerson dropped out of practice with a hamstring injury. Wood

  • Safety Darnell Savage Jr (teeth) and CB Josh Jackson (foot) still out.  Mason Crosby says team is "just being cautious" with his calf injury.  Wood

CB Tony Brown hobbled and then went inside with a couple of the trainers. Demovsky [Brown returned to practice shortly thereafter.]

  • [Savage is still out.]  Raven Greene lining up at starting safety in his place. Dougherty  [Josh Jackson also was still out.]

  • Saw a lot of 21 personnel in yesterday’s install. Today, the inverse. Lots of 12 personnel with Robert Tonyan getting a good helping of first-team reps.  Wood

Curtis Bolton has been ahead of Ty Summers all day today fwiw. Herman

  • Marquez Valdez-Scantling is pretty clearly ahead of EQ St. Brown as the second perimeter WR across Davante Adams. (Geronimo Allison in the slot.) Will that continue the next five weeks? Way too early to know.  Wood
  • LaFleur says Brian Gutekunst had his eye on RB Corey Grant, but OC Nathaniel Hackett helped recruit Grant over some other options. Hackett was around Grant in Jacksonville. “I know he’s really, really fast,” LaFleur said if (sic) Grant.  Wood

  • Interesting signing from the Packers - RB Corey Grant. Some ways Nathanial Hackett used Grant in Jacksonville 2 years ago.... Big performance in that AFCC game vs NE.  Ben Fennell

Quarterbacks:

  • Kizer with the 2s in this session as he fires to Sternberger who gets up field nicely. Herman
  • Trevor Davis on jet sweep with Jimmy Graham leading excellent blocking.  Huber
  • Tim Boyle wirh a ridiculous starter level throw to hit Davante Adams for a big gain. Fantastic anticipation and Adams made a great adjustment and catch. It is ridiculous how much the game has shown (sic) down for Adams. Boyle w/ another huge anticipation throw to a sliding Kumerow!  Herman
  • Sullivan almost picks Boyle on a slant. Ball was bobbled a few times, good play by Chandon  Sullivan is having a nice day.  Herman
  • Boyle continues to get a ton of of work with the 2’s ahead of DeShone Kizer. Boyle seems to have a legit shot at QB2.  Herman
  • Manny Wilkins with a very nice post throw to J’Mon who had separation, makes a move in the open field and makes a huge play. Best play by J’Mon In camp so far.  Herman
  • Looked like Aaron Rodgers had Davante Adams deep across the middle of the field vs. Adrian Amos. Good throw by Rodgers, but Amos recovered in time to break up the pass. Nice play by Amos showing some recovery speed deep.  Wood
  • Tim Boyle with an attempted deep back shoulder to J’Mon but Ka’dar has sticky coverage and breaks it up nicely. One rookie to keep an eye on.  Herman

  • Kizer with a beauty of a bomb to St. Brown vs Tony Brown. Ball probably went 65 yards in the air.  Huber
  • Kizer hit ESB in stride deep for a long TD after the speedy WR blew past Tony Brown. Wood

Defensive Backs/Wide Receivers:

  • Raven Greene fills his gap well and shuts down Jamaal Williams. Williams just not very elusive in the open field.  Herman
  • Trevor Davis just made a phenomenal catch over Kevin King in one-on-ones. A little earlier, Jake Kumerow put on a great comeback move against Will Redmond. Again, no pads favors offense.  Wood
  • Rodgers to Allison on a quick pass, nice route from 81, super quick throw from 12. Fake jet to MVS - Davante cooks King - easy money from 12. Davante doing Davante things. King continues to struggle with in breakers.  Herman
  • Kizer a bomb to EQ for a touchdown on his first rep.  EQ won deep yesterday as well.  Herman

Running Backs:

  • Corey Grant shows off that 4.28 speed as he bursts to the outside for what would have been a big gainer. Jet sweep to Trevor Davis works very well for a gain of 15-20 to the outside left. Montravius Adams stuffs Jamaal Williams for a loss.  Herman
  • RB Corey Grant (at today’s practice was seen) running the cones. Covered him at Auburn. Super, duper speed.  Wood
  • Dexter Williams cuts back nicely before he ran into Rashan Gary who was on the edge waiting for him. Nice run by Williams.  Herman

Defensive Linemen:

  • Fadol Brown and Kyler Fackrell with nice wins to end one on ones. Really nice day from Fadol so far.  Herman
  • Fadol Brown with a big time run stuff against Dexter Williams. That was a flash play for Fadol. Next play guess who shoots in the backfield again... Fadol Brown. Carrying over from a good showing in OTAs.  Herman
  • Fadol Brown having a freaking day. Just would have sacked Boyle who fired deep post to J’Mon anyway but it’s off target.  Herman
  • An audible gasp from Ross Uglem when Gary took off at the snap with a “he is so DAMN fast.” Ross isn’t wrong.  Herman

Punter:

  • Punter JK Scot got 11 reps vs. rush. Had the wind at his back, and used it well: 48 yards, 4.05 seconds hang 38, 3.80 62, 4.46 60, 4.86 60, 4.65 51, 4.02 63, 4.46 55, 4.58 61, 4.80 62, 4.38 59, 4.58 Avg: 56, 4.42.  Wood.
  • JK Scott’s first punting numbers on 11 attempts: 57.3 yard average 4.43 average hang time.  Demovsky
  • With my abacus handy, I has Scott with 56.5 average and 4.44 of hang time on 11 punts.  Huber

Miscellaneous - Overview:

  • Fackrell with a little pressure vs Light. Keke loses rep 1, better rep 2. Patrick gets the best of Lancaster twice. Jenkins and Looney with a good battle 2x. Gary is so damn good. Spriggs no chance. Spriggs does better rep 2 but Gary powers through it.  Good initial push by Z but Bakhtiari stymies him. Linsley beats Montravius, strong anchor. Clark beats Turner off the line but Turner recovers perfectly. Next rep Turner dominates Clark. Bulaga takes care of Preston.  Herman
  • I want to really, really re-emphasize the coverage by Oren Burks. He looked fantastic in both reps. Stuck with Jones on a double move in the open field, jammed him, undercut the route and made a super athletic pick. Huge play for him.  Herman
  • Some 1 on 1s.  Kumerow beats Will Redmond. M. Lewis beats Preston Smith easy. Vitale runs a nice angle rte in Crawford A. Jones beats Blake on a wheel!!! Grant gets best of Bolton Oren Burks wirh great coverage on Jamaal Williams and then another rep w/ an amazing pick vs. Jones!!  Herman
  • False start by de Beer. Offense Boyle quick pass to Shepherd. Reggie Gilbert gets around de Beer for a would-be sack.  Herman
  • Alex Light great job on Gary. Kizer finds EQ who explodes up field.  Herman
  • Today’s practice standouts: Fadol Brown!!! Chandon Sullivan Tim Boyle Kenny Clark Davante Adams Jaire Alexander Adrian Amos EQ Billy Turner Jace Sternberger, Burks and Z. Smith.  Herman

I did not include every tweet.  Aaron Rodgers made some nice passes. Adrian Amos had a nice pass break up against Rodgers.  I did not find any tweets specifically about Billy Turner, though Andy Herman listed him as a standout player today in practice, but I did use a photo of Fadol Brown.

This was not a padded practice.  There seems to be fewer people actually attending practice than in the past.  If there is someone attending and tweeting about training camp sessions, please let me know in the comments.

Would be nice to see Burks come on. I'm glad the Packers picked up a speed back. Something that has been missing for a while now. Interesting about Fadol Brown. Nice to hear good things about Gary.

Here's to hoping Gary makes me look dumb for complaining about the Packers picking him.

At the risk of sounding like an ass, I had Gary going to the packers at pick #12 in several of my mocks I posted. I was completely berated on here by most for it, including Mr. Uglem......The reason why I had him going to the Packers if available is Gary checks the boxes for what the Packers personnel staff look for athletically. He is in the top .02 percentile for athleticism at that size. Gute, TT and Wolf jump at players like this. I hope it translates.

LOL. Did we really "berate" you? Well, you strike me as being pretty tough, so I imagine you can take it.

IIRC, I wrote that Gary was an "awful pick...unless it works." Massive boom vs. bust pick. My previous boom/bust crush was Josh Jones, though pre-draft (and one loaded with safeties - Josh Jones was the 9th safety selected) I had hoped to get Jones in the late 3rd. Montravious Adams wasn't a crush but when he was there in the 3rd round, I wrote that he had too much talent not to select, despite being a headcase.

I am still waiting to see significant production from my last two boom or bust guys. Hoping Gary delivers a lot more and a lot faster.

A running back with 4.28 speed. Speed kills.

But (1) is he durable? (2) can he hold on to the rock or does he leave it on the ground?

Dont know anything about him but there must be a reason he was available with that type of crazy speed.

Thanks for the updates - bring on the pads baby!

I'm hoping Vitale shines tomorrow (or is full pads Sunday?) we need a hammer besides Williams back there.

This Dline competition is going to be fun if Brown keeps it up.

Also hope Gary becomes a monster.

I have never seen someone listed out with "Teeth" as the reason. Two days now.

J. Williams isn't going to standout in shells and no pads practices. His game is contact. But Grant could mean that Williams gets cut depending on injuries and performance of the rookie.

Williams isn't getting cut. He's the definite #2 back

I thought that too. But this isn't the same coaching staff, and the competition sounds like it's a bit higher this year. MLF and Gute sound like they want to get faster everywhere. Williams is a dependable back, and is expendable if either of the new guys shows a good ability to pass block and better run skills. But injuries might have more of a say in who stays and who goes.

Qoojo,

Safe to say you never had tooth issues.

Can be some of the most painful times you ever experienced.

Wisdom teeth out is effectively surgery.

Ice,
So true!

Without boring everyone I will simply say 15 days in the field with cracked molar requiring eventual root canal was pain beyond anything most can even imagine. Every day the pain intensified and simply wore down your ability to withstand it. Relentless! Eventually had root canal and it didnt touch the pain. Finally next day extracted cracked tooth. Many women since then have told me root canal pain even for a few days worse than giving birth.

I'm a sissy when it comes to my teeth; I ask for a numb shot for every kind of procedure. My mother was another case entirely; she had MULTIPLE root canals WITHOUT anesthetic!!! She said it never bothered her! I've never heard of anyone else with that kind of pain tolerance for their teeth. It still boggles my mind.

Wisdom teeth can be really rough in some cases. Could even get an infection then it gets bad.

Hard to see see William's cut. Good blocker, good receiver, short yard runner, and always available.

He's consistent and reliable without making flashy plays. There's a definite place for that. Just ask Amos.

Williams is a different type of back. What he would do is power through: not something size or permitted without pads! Therefore the point/observation missed the point to the extent of being unhelpful.

Funnily enough he has been very effective in the passing game when used, but for some reason they avoided using him like that last season.

We need to stop trying to make everybody play to one type. MM fell into that trap: use players to their strengths and according to the opponent’s weaknesses rather than comparing apples to oranges. I truly hope LaFleur and Hackett will show that extensively.

On a different point, Moore has shown well thus far it seems and flashed why he has so much upside. I’m also happy to say there seems to be an early leader I. The unheralded and overlooked sweepstakes: Chandon Sullivan. Interesting piece on him from this time last year by Eagleswire.

TGR, Thanks again for these updates. I commented last season that I (as someone who doesn't use twitter, facebook, etc.) really appreciate these snippets of comments in one place on Packers' practices. Keep 'em coming, please. :)
