Packers Practice Roundup: Day 15. August 18, 2019

Packers Practice Roundup: Day 15.  August 18, 2019

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Full no practice list: Rodgers (back) King (hammy) J Jones Hollman (stinger) Campbell Burks Vitale (calf) Ento (hammy) Roberts Bakhtiari (personal day) Sternberger Gilbert (knee).  Dougherty
  • Looks like helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for practice No. 15.  Second-to-last public practice goes an hour and 55 minutes and it wasn't pretty for an offense without Aaron Rodgers.  Demovsky
  • RB Jamaal Williams back from his hamstring, in his first practice since early in camp.  Jamaal Williams won’t play in Winnipeg. Packers getting him reacclimated to practice.  Wood
  • Trevor Davis is in pads for practice.  Reiner
  • Graham at least jammed his finger on the play. Maybe worse. He immediately ran inside the Hutson Center.  Wood  [Graham did not return, per Andy Herman.]
  • CB/S Josh Jackson is taking part in team drills for the first time since coming off NFI with a foot injury.  Silverstein
  • With 1 practice left, here’s how I’d rank the WR performances through OTAs, Training Camp, & Preseason: 1. Davante Adams - - 2. Jake Kumerow - 3. Geronimo Allison 4. MVS 5t. Trevor Davis / Darrius Shepherd - 7. Allen Lazard 8. EQ - 9. J’Mon Moore 10. Teo Redding 11. Malik Taylor.  Herman
  • Fadol Brown is in pads for practice today.  Reiner
  • Did we get our first peek at Matt LaFleur's play sequencing? 3 straight plays vs BAL... Same personnel, formation, run action. 11 personnel, 3x1. Split zone. D. Hall +28 D. Hall +5 Play Action Lazard +25 Different plays that start out looking the same!  Ben Fennell  Watch the video clip here.
  • This fits with his (LaFleur’s) oft-stated desire for the wide receivers to see themselves as part of the run game.  Nagler

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Kizer throws an absolute one hopper duck to Adams.  Herman
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling beats Nydair Rouse, and DeShone Kizer hits hun for a deep TD. GB’s offense has looked pretty sloppy today overall, but some big plays sprinkled in.  Wood
  • Wow. MVS gets open by five car lengths down the sideline against scout D and Kizer puts it right on him for a 60 yd TD.  Hodkiewicz [Same play as above.]
  • Boyle slant to Shep for a big pickup. Shep beat Redmond on the play.  Herman
  • J’Mon Moore has two drops today. Not what he needed.  Wood
  • Kizer deep to EQ who has a step on Alexander, well overthrown by Kizer. Deep ball remains a big issue for him. Out to Adams who was wide open and frankly the ball needed to be released sooner and more on a line from Kizer. Still complete but much shorter gain.  Herman
  • Manny Wilkins hits Allen Lazard in the end zone through A LOT of traffic for a five yard touchdown.  Reiner
  • QB DeShone Kizer airmailed a pass to Darrius Shepherd in the right flat, and Tramon Williams settles under it for an easy pick. Haven’t seen him do that in games yet.  Wood
  • Kizer to Lazard who prob should have had a catch over Alexander but Jaire stays with it and breaks it up.  Two plays later Wilkins to Lazard for a touchdown in the back of the end zone. Nice catch by Lazard. Jamerson in coverage.  Herman
  • First play, Boyle found Davante Adams deep down the left sideline. Adams burned Tramon Williams, caught a frozen rope for TD.  Wood
  • Darrius Shepherd and Allen Lazard certainly have performed well and are in the 53 conversation, but they've mostly played against non-NFL talent. Furthermore, their play doesn't negate how much Trevor Davis impressed the Packers' coaches in the spring and in training camp.  Jason Hirschhorn [This is my editorial, here because I agree with it.  I do like Shepherd, though.]

Tight Ends:

  • Nice run by Aaron Jones behind Light and Marcedes.  Herman
  • Kumerow on a reverse for a nice gain off a great block by Tonyan.  Herman

Running Backs:

  • Keith Ford another nice run. He’s played well today.  Herman
  • Another nice run by Keith Ford. Runs really well behind his pads.  Herman
  • Williams hangs on to the screen this time and bursts up field.  Herman
  • Matt LaFleur just scolded Dexter Williams heavily for a failed play during a red zone drill. Told him to “get out” and now he’s standing off to the side.  Reiner
  • Holy cow. Dexter Williams open for a td. Boyle beautiful ball, Williams drops it and LaFleur is PISSED. All over Williams and he’s out of the period.  Herman [Same play as above/Reiner.]
  • LaFleur said Williams messed up his assignment here and it irritated him because it was the first play of a scripted competition period.  Loudest I’ve heard him yell all camp. Just screamed “get out” and kicked Williams out of the drill.  Schneidman
  • Dexter Williams w/ an impressive inside run. Maybe the most Jekyl & Hyde player in camp so far. Ups and downs are huge for the rookie rb.  Herman
  • Dexter Williams back. Good blitz pickup and then a nice run back to back.  Herman [Dexter has had a couple of good blitz pick-ups noted by various observers in TC so far.]
  • Wilkins to Bohannon in the flat for a nice pickup.  Herman
  • Jones with another big run. Run game just entirely different when he’s in there.  Herman
  • Nice run by Tre Carson on a toss outside with a beautiful lead block by Bohannan.  Herman

Defensive Backs:

  • Awesome play by defense. McKever has a catch but Williams pops it out and Brown picks it off. Really nice play.  Herman
  • Another win for defense. Tramon Williams intercepts a bootleg from Kizer. Preston Smith in Kizer’s face.  Huber
  • Jaire all over a bubble screen to Allison.  Big pbu by Tramon covering Shep. Defense winning today so far.  Herman
  • Tony Brown on the play he got hurt broke up the pass. Bullet throw by Kizer. Brown right there but Jr. deflected up and Graham catches it off the defection for the TD. It looks like Tony Brown is going to be ok.  Herman
  • Pettine says he's never let Tony Brown forget the taunting penalty at Packers when Packers were down 24-8. He's matured and responded to coaching. "He still has a ways to go but he's a guy that played some quality minutes for us."  Huber

Safety:

  • Darnell Savage Jr got a good jump on DeShone Kizer’s pass to Jimmy Graham, breaking it up.  Wood
  • Will Redmond all over a fake jet toss to Hall.  Herman
  • Pettine says he thinks Ibraheim Campbell could handle a starting safety job. Doesn’t mean he will with Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage Jr, but shows what the Packers defensive coordinator thinks of Campbell.  Wood
  • Loved this rep from rookie safety Darnell Savage [in the Baltimore preseason game].  Good coverage/technique on the double move from TE Hurst... Can't panic with that ball in the air! More coming on The Athletic.  Ben Fennell.  Watch the play here.

Linebackers:

  • A jet sweep by Allison who gets leveled by Brady Sheldon who immediately helps him up and apologizes.  Herman
  • Za’Darius with a sack. At first glance not sure anyone blocked him.  Another sack by Za’Darius on Kizer. Now Blake breaks up a pass to Carson with a thud.  Herman
  • Rollout by Boyle good read by Summers to stay with it but Boyle completes downfield to EQ.  Herman

Kicker/STs:

  • ST coordinator Shawn Mennenga: "My feelings haven't changed about Trevor (Davis). I'm still high on him and his abilities as a returner." That said, Davis is injured. Mennenga has been trying a lot of different returners, trying to forecast all kinds of possibilities.  Wood
  • Darrius Shepherd getting the first crack at returning JK Scott punts today.  Trevor Davis back taking the first kick return rep. Darrius Shepherd second.  Schneidman
  • Will Redmond and Trevor Davis the top two gunners on the punt unit.  Herman
  • Packers Field Goals: both kickers good from 22, 28, 33 and 40.  Schneidman [Another practice with no long attempts.]
  • Apparently, they plan on stalling out in the red zone a lot because these chip shots don’t seem to do much for the competition.  Demovsky
  • LaFleur said he will talk to Mennenga about testing the kickers with longer attempts – per Schneidman.

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • Boyle hits Malik Taylor over the middle for a big gain. Great protection by Yosh on Gary. False start Elgton Jenkins.  Herman
  • Alex Light took first-team reps at LT in Bakhtiari’s place [Bakh taking a personal day.]. Third tackle is Light’s job to lose.  Wood
  • Missed snap between Patrick and Boyle leads to a turnover.  Cole Madison getting some early work in on his shotgun snaps. Something that’s been a major issue for him in his transition to center.  Herman
  • A false start on Jenkins. An ugly practice thus far.  Huber
  • Matt LaFleur said they probably got the number wrong on Elgton Jenkins' second holding penalty [in the Baltimore preseason game]. Which would make sense, because it wasn't holding.  Kruse
  • Kingsley Keke flashing again. Big run stop on a fairly unimpressive run by Tre Carson.  Herman

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • LaFleur, wanting his defense to reemphasize tackling, said he thought defense was much more physical today. Noted a couple plays knocked ball carriers off their feet. “I think it took our offense by surprise.”  Wood
  • False start offense. Offense has been mostly hot garbage today.  Herman
  • OC Nathaniel Hackett says Allen Lazard "has definitely come a long way" from where he was in Jacksonville, where Hackett coached him. Says he's slimmed down a lot, and deep knowledge of system: "He just goes so hard. Every play, his effort is maxed out all the time."  Wood
  • this practice has gone off the rails. One of the worst offensive practices Ray Nitschke Field — or any field — has ever seen.  Demovsky
  • Today’s standouts: Za’Darius Smith Tramon Williams!!! Tony Brown Keith Ford Tim Boyle Yosh Nijman Curtis Bolton Brady Sheldon Kingsley Keke Darrius Shepherd.  Herman

Ben Fennell has some nice video clips on his twitter and over at the Athletic.

I chose to use Tramon Williams' photo at the top of this article. He had one INT, caused another, and had a PBU.

GB starts the season against two very good defenses. The offense just doesn't seem to be gelling yet. No AR, though, and some key pieces have been sidelined. I am not on the worry bus, yet.

People in Jacksonville will tell you Hackett is a bad OC. Of course, LaFleur is really the OC, so not too worried. 32 teams passed on Yosh. Why?

Questions over his coachability and technique. Played on raw athleticism to a high standard. Was that the coaches not messing with a player when things are working or a player who won’t be taught?

All that said, still surprised he made it to UDFA.

Bortles is/was a bad QB. They seemed to like him (Hackett) well enough when they were winning in '17.

The Oline In Freakville has sucked for years and the never gave Bort the support he needed to develop. He would amaze with his play one week then tank, all while running for his life because of the thin wall in front of him. That is on the front office not the QB or the coaches.

Rodgers not practicing is somewhat concerning. I hope there isn't a deeper issue causing the back tightness . Probably not going to play this Thursday? This offense needs live game reps with Rodgers before the season starts.

Good to see J Williams , T Davis, J Jackson and F Brown back at practice

The staff is also going to check out the surface conditions of the field in Winnipeg before deciding whether AR plays. Even if healthy, he might not play if the condition of the field is as bad as Soldier Field often is, for instance.

So, Rodgers will play vs. Chiefs? Normally, the 4th preseason game is a final eval for bottom of the roster players. However, if Rodgers plays, might see Chiefs starters as well.

Was on the field at Winnipeg last year. Far, far worse the Soldier field. That's a hard floor there, I would not blame MLF one bit if he held Rodgers out.

Yeah, it's a Field built to the CFL. NFL has a lot more contact, even in preseason. Going to be a lot of sore and tired legs after this game. I pull my starters way early if I were MLF. Realistically last chance for most of lower draft and UDFA. Just hope both teams come out without serious injuries, that's all.

Why even play up there in hockey country. Especially when the field is a concern. Graham can’t seem to stay healthy. Too many nicks. That’s what happens when we get old and doesn’t get any better. I wish they’d start Tonyan and use Graham as a situational type player. If it wasn’t money, I think I’d release him. I hope he can stay healthy and prove me wrong.

" I hope there isn't a deeper issue causing the back tightness ."

The deeper issue might be a need to figure out the hot mess at backup QB...

That said, I think it's imperative that he gets at least a quarter of game snaps before Chicago.

A couple of things seem apparent:

1. Starting 5 (top 6, really) can pass block.
2. Jury is out on the run blocking, and backups.
3. AR to Adams is going fine. Allison or Kumerow should be just fine as #3 WRs. Lots of at least intriguing possibilities for the #4 and #5 WR.
4. AR to MVS connection is not there yet. Not sure if we have a good #2 WR. At worst, GB might have three pretty darn good #3 WR types.
5. The TE group has enough personnel, assuming we keep four.
6. Lot of talented CBs on the roster. Keep 6 or even 7. It would be nice if the top-end proven quality was deeper.
8. Top three safeties look set. Not sure what is up with Campbell.
9. Top two OLBs look good. Rest are a question.
10. ILB and DL are could be but IDK if they will be good.

ILB will be our Achilles heel on defense. Offenses will be able to attack them by passing to RB's and running inside.

Gute says they'll be fine. While most like Bolton, I don't like his size. The Packers have him at 6' 228 # ,which is a little small. Doubt he holds up. Still he did well in college. The Packers have in the past liked their LBs at 240. (for that reason. ) Summers was known as a good tackler by most scouts. Must need time to adjust. People talk about Jones moving to ILB. I'll take Bolton or Summers first.

We’ve screwed the pooch.

Rodgers has an injury history and he’s on the bad side of 35. He’s broken 3 bones, had three concussions, and played injured in 2014 and 2017. Now his back is giving him enough trouble that he can’t practice and he hasn’t even been hit yet.

And we’ve passed up opportunities to get a real guy behind him. You know, franchise caliber QBs aren’t always available and two years in a row we’ve passed one up.

It’s like we’re begging for a lost season. This could be it.

Every QB is fragile and every defender treats them that way...that's in part why the league started instituting the 'bubble wrap' rules. They know they can't have their prime stars shelved for 6-8 weeks of their seasons.

Dobber....surely you haven't forgotten Brent Favre already. I could use a lot of words to describe him, but fragile isn't one of them

Look at Rodgers history since he got on the bad side of 30. He missed half a season in 2013. He played hurt all of 2014. He missed half the season in 2017. He played hurt all of 2018.

And the concussions.

Look at other QBs in the league and compare their injury history with Rodgers. Brady, Brees, Ryan, Roethlisberger, Wilson, Cousins, Stafford, Manning....ALL of these guys have shown a lot better durability.

I think it's insane to think that Rodgers is going to be healthy for the next 50 starts. We need a backup who can actually play, not some developmental project or over-the-hill never was.

With the new rules about player safety, there's no way Favre would've been allowed to have his streak. He would've been pulled from a ton of games and held out with concussion symptoms. Different era, different rules, poor comparison.

I can name several current QBs who've had much better durability over the last six years. He's 13th in games started over the last 6 years. Most of the best QBs have better attendance....Brady, Ryan, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Newton, Manning, Brees.

So maybe some QBs are a little less fragile than others. Maybe it's just luck.

As regards the NFL's Ironman, I would agree that there were times he should not have played because of injury. But then, and even now, the point is the same.....some QBs are NOT delicate.

This whole thing with Rodgers back is somewhat concerning. I can't recall Rodgers ever having an issue with his back and now out of the blue...back issues?

I'd normally blame the SAME strength and conditioning staff the Packers actually carried over from McCarthy's staff, but I have to think after this many years Rodgers has his own routines.

I haven't ever jumped on the Rodgers is injury prone because the Barr hit was just plain dirty.
His leg was caught in a funny position last season and I'm thinking most players would have been injured on that play.
The injury from 2013? Collarbone injuries are strange. I broke BOTH of mine because I got caught in a weird position and they both snapped because of the weight...Something had to give, just like on the Barr play.

I say all that to say this. If the back issues remain all season it may not be too early in 2020 to draft a QB...Early.

Before the preseason started I thought or hoped Rodgers would have AT LEAST 3 or 4 quarters of playing time between weeks 2 and 3. IMHO I just think no matter how great a guy is, he STILL has to have those reps.

Whether there are back issues or not, I think 2020 they need to invest in the QB position regardless.
Lets face it, Kizer and Boyle have not been very impressive this preseason.

They need to invest into the backup position.

I agree though I was thinking around 2021 instead. But hey, if a QB they want is there this next draft by all means...

I'd still like to see a WR drafted next year EARLY though. ILB, WR, and QB should be on the high on the Packers board hopefully.

Hey man. Yeah, I have been very busy lately. Been on vacation and dealing with family issues.
But trying to get on as much as possible. I should be able to get on more and more.

yeah, honestly I'm not even concerned really with finding Rodgers eventual replacement at this point. I'm honestly looking for a young guy that could be a good backup and could possibly be developed into his replacement. If the right veteran were available they could go that route too. Just not impressed with Kizer. Though, I will say I think he has been better then what some have given him credit for. But I haven't been that impressed. Time to find the next guy.

yeah, as of right now (obviously very early in the process), I think more offense for the draft. I think they may need more RB's, based on seeing what LaFleur is trying to do offensively. Last year under Pettine they realized they weren't able to do what he wanted to do so they went out and brought in the players he needed/wanted to run the defense the way he wants to. I could see a very similar thing with the offense this year. They have Rodgers to cover a lot of other areas, but I could see them going out and adding more skilled players to the offense to better fit what LaFleur wants to do.

ILB is an area of concern. Hopefully they can get Martinez locked up.

Back problems aren't a good sign. Is it just muscle or a disk issue? Considering he hasn't been hit since last season, presumably, it could be either one.

He needs the in game reps in my opinion. Otherwise, Rodger's preseason will be the first two weeks or so of the regular season. This team could easily start out at 0-5 or 1-4. Beating Denver the only win in the first 5.

If he now has a chronic back problem, we're screwed. If he has "Trainingcampitis", and his ego thinks he is ready no matter what, I would be disappointed in that.

Worse, if he has I got my "hugecontractitis", this team is going to be in bad shape for a number of years. And yes, they need to draft a QB in the next draft no matter what.

Maybe they should hold Rodgers out of the Bears game because he might get hurt.
Maybe they should hold him out of the Vikings game because he might get hurt.
Maybe he should only play against soft teams that have perfect field conditions.
Maybe they should draft a replacement quarterback in the next draft.

Davis can't stay healthy, so I have to think the Packers should roll with Shepherd and let him walk. I'm surprised but not surprised that Kumerow is pushing over Allison. I think is says more about Allison's limitations. Allison could be a surprise cut. Lazard v. EQ will be the toughest call if it comes down to the two of them for one spot. I think Moore is still practice squad eligible.

Barring injury, your OL locks are your starting 5, Elgton Jenkins based on draft captial and performance, and Alex Light who is taking reps with the 1s at LT. After that I think you have McCray, Madison and Patrick vying for one spot, maybe two spots if they are lucky. That leaves Pankey, Coyle, Nijman and de Beer on the outside looking in, and I think pretty much in that order. (I know de Beer is listed with the second string, but I have to list him last after the Ravens scrimmage.)

I'm happy to hear that J Williams is back. Aaron Jones returning last week and getting Williams back this week will really help improve the looks of the RB position. They form a really nice 1-2 punch.

Dexter Williams has had his struggles, but he has flashed the skills that you see from college. He had one of the nicest runs in the Ravens game, but was called back due to a holding penalty that wasn't. While that play didn't count in the score books it still counts for Williams.
His inside running has been good so far. He has had troubles with dropped passes but perhaps that is from him thinking to much. It happens to a lot of rookies.

D. Williams can't block period. That alone puts him in cut land. With a older QB who has committed to playing more in the pocket, both HB and FB being able to pass protect is rule one. Right now, out of the current group, only J. Williams and T. Carson and that new veteran FB can do the job based on pass play. With this league being a pass league now, if a RB can't catch out of the backfield and pass pro, he's dead to his team. D. Williams, despite his physical talent has two of those strikes against him. (Same goes for both the FB the Packers started camp with, and to a lesser extend Aaron Jones. His issue is he can't stay healthy for now.)

There have been at least a couple of tweets lauding Dexter Williams for a fine blitz pickup. The problem with that is IDK about his consistency or whether he is assignment sure just from tweets. I don't recall any damning tweets on his blocking.

I'm intrigued by Lazard, as well as Shepherd, plus Keith Ford.

Many nagging injuries starting to pile up. Grahams’ the latest. Also King, Vitale, Aaron Jones, Hollman etc etc. Hope none of these are too serious. Was never a fan of Gute signing Graham. He’s not even close to his NO days.

I can't believe that we are judging a coach who hasn't had a game yet. Maybe we should actually give it a couple games before we decide he's a mistake?????

I warned about this, that the likelihood was that McCarthy's successor would not be as successful as he was. I warned about "6-10" . I warned that Rodgers might have trouble with injuries

No gift of prophecy. just able to read the writing on the wall.
