Packers Practice Roundup: Day 11. August 6,2019

Packers Practice Roundup: Day 11.  August 6,2019.

Here is a sampling of the observations by media observers of today's practice.

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • injury updates: T. Davis - stinger T. Carson - neck spasm J. Sternberger - jaw, w/ concussion evaluation. He said he was cleared yesterday but symptoms emerged so he’s being evaluated.  Owczarski
  • LaFleur said (Preston) Smith experienced some back tightness.  Preston dropped out during practice.  Jake Kumerow has his left pinky finger wrapped up. Said he jammed it in practice yesterday but didn't think it would impact his catching.  Demovsky
  • Kevin King not in pads but moving around incredibly well. Same for Jamaal Williams.  Roberts, Donnerson, & Fadol Brown remain out.  Trevor Davis indeed not in pads today. He’s out. Looks to be moving around fine.  Herman
  • The Packers have waived/injured backup tackle Jason Spriggs. They've claimed RB Keith Ford off waivers from the Colts.  Schneidman
  • Spriggs was roughly average last year, which actually possesses tremendous value in the NFL. They must really feel comfortable with Turner at tackle or they love Alex Light. Elgton Jenkins can play RT in a pinch as well and Yosh Nijman is as athletically gifted as any NFL OT.  Uglem

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Rodgers to EQ touchdown on a slant in 7x7. Great separation by EQ.  Herman
  • Darrius Shepherd [caught the pass but] was called for OPI negating a TD.  Owczarski
  • Kizer to Kumerow touchdown. Nice read and throw by 9.  Herman
  • Jawill Davis beats his man deep but Manny (Wilkins) can’t hit him. That does it for practice!!!  Herman
  • Boyle to Lazard for 8ish. Boyle to J’Mon for 8 more. Boule to Baylis for... 8 more.  Boyle to Redding incomplete. Texans defense wins that period again.  Herman

Tight Ends:

  • Manny Wilkins to Evan Baylis touchdown. Strong period for Wilkins!  Herman
  • Rodgers gorgeous throw to Graham in the end zone in 7x7s low but to where only Graham could get it. Dropped by Graham.  Herman
  • Jimmy Graham false start. Tough camp for him so far. Not a good way to “shut up the haters”  Herman

Running Backs:

  • Darrin Hall & Corey Grant using their speed to bounce outside successfully.  Herman
  • Rodgers hands off to Dexter Williams. Nothing doing. Loss of 2 and a hold on the offense.  Herman
  • Rodgers all day to throw. Good coverage. Checkdown to Vitale who picks up good yardage because he’s the greatest of all time.  Vitale show starts. Lone setback. Nice run up the middle.  Herman

Defensive Backs:

  • Jaire phenomenal coverage deep on Fuller. PBU.  Herman
  • Tony Brown 1x1 with Hopkins and another pbu.  Herman
  • Hopkins beats Tony Brown for a TD. Nice throw from Watson.  Kruse
  • Will Fuller beard Tony Brown for a TD.  Herman
  • Ento beat by Steven Mitchell. Ups and downs for Ento today. Hollman good coverage but complete anyway. Kabion Ento another nice big pbu denying a TD.  Herman
  • There goes that man. Kabion Ento another PBU.  Ento beat on an in-breaking route for 10ish.  Herman

Safety:

  • second (team) defense doesn’t fare as well, allowing TD. Big play game courtesy safety Natrell Jamerson misplaying an A.J. McCarron pass to Tryon Johnson. Johnson caught the pass over Ka’dar Hollman, who should’ve had more safety help.  Wood
  • Mike Tyson almost comes down with the INT. Probably should have.  Herman
  • Adrian Amos intercepts Deshaun Watson. WR Vyncint Smith slipped in back of end zone, and Amos got both feet down for acrobatic catch.  Wood
  • Deep ball to Fuller. Incomplete but Would have been DPI on Amos for a big play.  Herman

Linebackers:

  • False start Texans negates a likely Oren Burks sack.  Herman
  • And Fackrell just got blown out of the hole by a double-team block.  Wood
  • Za’Darius sack!!!  Reggie Gilbert sack, Herman
  • Blake Martinez run stuff at the line. Great fill. Touchdown Darren Fells who beats Burks.  Herman
  • Texans another td - looked like Crawford got beat by Kahale Warring.  Herman

Kicker/STs:

  • P JK Scott booted 9 times v rush. Took him awhile to warm up, but he got there: 39 yards, 3.91 hang 40, 3.61 39, 3.46 35, 4.16 54, 4.44 50, 4.49 49, 4.46 52, 4.75 51, 4.83 Avg: 45.4, 4.23  Wood
  • Punting drills: Gunners: Josh Jones & EQ Protectors: Tonyan, Greene, Tyson Line: Burks - Vitale - Bradley - Crawford - Fackrell Meanwhile a couple of really bad punts by Scott.  Herman
  • Scott punts nine times. First four were poor. Last five were excellent. Last was 51 yards with 4.80 hang that Kumerow tackled instantly. Huber
  • Without Davis, Sheppard gets first crack on punt returns.  Huber

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • Randy Ramsey and Markus Jones with a couple pressures.  Herman
  • Montravius Adams shot into backfield for TFL.  Wood
  • Wilkins sacked. de Beer smoked off the line. Another high snap from Madison. Wilkins able to corral and hand off on a draw to Darrin Hall for a very nice run up the middle.  Herman
  • Za’Darius Smith also won both his 1v1 reps, beating Seantrel Henderson and Zach Fulton.  Rashan Gary won both of his 1v1 reps, beating Matt Kalil with speed and Max Scharpring with power.  Wood
  • Bulaga/Bakhtiari dominant on the edges. Rodgers has time, finds Davante  Kruse
  • Coach David Bakhtiari was once again going through some technique work off to the side with Alex Light today. Not sure if that’s by design but the Packers need Light to be ready in the event of an injury. Of course, Turner could always be used at tackle as well.  Herman [I’ve omitted previous tweets of Bakh working with Light – it seems to be Light mostly.]
  • Billy Turner just drove a Texans DL five yards down the field.  Billy Turner again! Just drove 97 into the turf.  Didn't watch much of the offense today but I was impressed with Billy Turner in the team stuff I did see. He can really move people.  Kruse
  • Pankey strong rep 1x1. de Beer beat easily. Cole Madison dominates 2 reps. Pankey loss. Nijman loss. Nijman easy win.  Elgton Jenkins teo absolute maulings in 1x1s. He completely pancaked his man twice and only needed a couple seconds to do it both times.  Cole Madison wins first rep, holds on the 2nd. Alex Light wins his first 1x1 rep. Billy Turner wins. Billy Turner absolutely dominates. Patrick brutal loss. Reggie Gilbert wins his 1x1 Loss for Lane Taylor.   Herman
  • Watched mostly the defense these two days. Top takeaway: Za’Darius Smith is going to terrorize people this year. He’s so good.  Za’Darius actually sacked Watson there.  Kruse
  • Rodgers throwaway. 1st team offense massively struggling today.  GBs first team offense again did nothing. Kizers turn.  Kizer sacked. 2nd team offense just as bad. Texans defense absolutely dominating without Clowney or Watt.  Herman
  • [GB went 3 and out in the 2-minute drill.  Scored no TDs in the red zone drill. Per Demovsky]
  • Manny Wilkins sacked. Holding on the Packers offense. Looked like another touchdown for the Texans offense. Absolutely brutal set of team sessions for GB. Offense walked back with their heads held a bit. They knew.  Herman [Different than above tweet.]
  • Packers offense is hard to watch today.  Nagler

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • Spriggs: 2017 Grade: -13.1 2018 Grade -5.7 Both in limited action. He was really one of the few left on the roster with a massively poor grade. He never lived up to his athletic profile & could never quite put it all together. It’s Alex Light’s time now.  Remaining struggling performers combined grades for past two seasons: Justin McCray: -21.8 Josh Jones -7.15 Reggie Gilbert -7.10 Jimmy Graham -6.25 They purged everyone else.  Herman
  • “I’m glad it’s over.” Aaron Rodgers asked about the two days with the Texans.  Nagler
  • Fans (and Aaron Rodgers) might have to get used to opposing teams in Green Bay - Matt LaFleur would “absolutely” love to have one team in, if not two.  Owczarski
  • Rodgers on joint practices: 'I wouldn't mind if they didn't do it for another 14 years'.  Silverstein
  • Za’Darius Smith and an Texans’ O-lineman got into it and both teams came together for some shoving.  Demovsky [There were reports of punches thrown.]
  • Matt Nagy isn't allowed to say it out loud. But he's dropping enough bread crumbs that I'm not sure if most of his key starters play at all in the preseason. The Bears are very much taking measures to be as close to full strength on 9/5 as possible.  Dan Wiederer
  • Today’s camp standouts: Za’Darius Smith Adrian Amos Elgton Jenkins Billy Turner Jawill Davis Jaire Alexander Raven Greene Ty Summers Markus Jones. Herman

Aaron Rodgers does not like the joint practices.  He noted that the Packers run only a vanilla offense during joint practices.  Fans can be hopeful that running a restricted offense is the reason for the dismal offensive showing today.

There was talk that 12 may sit out Thursdays game because of all the work hed be able to do this week wearing a red jersey. Sounds like they need to all be out there working at full speed

When the coaching change was made and they talked about changes in offensive scheme, it became clear that #12 would have to play more in the preseason. How much more? Hard to say, but he's going to have to see more snaps than the, what, ttwo and a half series that he played last year.

I chose to use Billy Turner's photo at the top of this article. At least Zach Kruse was very enthusiastic about his performance today.

I could have chosen a defensive player, perhaps Amos, or one of the defensive line players. The Texans' offensive line was very bad last year, so I decided not to use a defensive lineman. Of course, Clowney and Watt did not practice either.

Reggie Gilbert got some first-team reps after Preston Smith dropping out, but I didn't see anything about his performance.

Thanks for the practice update . I hope the vanilla offense was a part of the problem today as I do not like to hear how bad they looked against another team. The problem is, even if it's vanilla offense, the players still must win their one on ones. It sounds like Bak and Bulaga did. Good report on Turner. Seems like the Oline was ok?

So was the problem with no separation from the receivers?

Maybe it's just me but Ty Summers' name seems to be popping up a lot in the standout section.

The only tweet I found was that he showed some sideline to sideline speed, but there was no description of the play, so I omitted that tweet. Maybe I shouldn't have omitted it, but we knew he was fast and athletic (9.9 RAS score). We need to see if he can play.

The big thing I've read is Summers has a knack for blitzing. Good timing, slippery, etc.

Don’t think he stood out today. Has done in recent practices. Was named above though.

Nice to see Jawill Davis show up. He has had a few mentions in recent days. Also Markus Jones, OLB signed last week getting noticed. Like to see new faces making an impact.

Tony Brown seems like the type to lock down a Hopkins type one play, and then let a no name UDFA beat him the next. Which honestly, I'd still take. Seems as if Josh Jones is working steadily down the line.. I feel like his grip is slipping. Genuinely proud to see Spriggs go.. easily one of our biggest bust in terms of production the last 10 years. Tired of the team trying with him honestly, and ready to see the next project there. Preston Smith has seemed to disappear, but with Z Smith and Gary showing real juice, we may be able to ease him in a couple games into the season. Amos standing out is a pleasant surprise. The Ento guy keeps popping up, guess we'll have to watch him. I'm really curious to see how Markus Jones performs. His college stats (all though DII) are absolutely insane.. we just need people who can disrupt the QB, doesn't matter from where.

Smith and Smith are supposed to allow Gary to ease in. High priced FA acquisitions should be able to pick up an NFL defense more quickly than a draft pick that is switching positions.

I think they have. Gary is just attracting attention because he is flashing his physical gifts. He has not surpassed the Smiths. Gary has unsurprisingly been a point of focus after the draft controversy over his selection. Preston Smith has been good at what he is asked to do from all I’ve heard.

Loved the Preston Smith signing. For a big guy, he's not a liability in space, he can handle the edge, and he can rush the passer. He's not dominant in any of those areas, but he elevates the defense and isn't matchup dependent.

I think Amos is a guy who isn't going to make a lot of headlines when they're in shorts. He's going to show up more when they're in pads.

I suspect fans have to watch Amos and Preston in games (preferably with All-22) to appreciate their play.

I like hearing the lineman-on-lineman "scorecards." Doesn't tell you a ton but it tells you something. Looking forward to Thursday. I like watching the guys struggling to make the team. That is what pre-season is all about.

I kinda agree with AR on joint practices. The team brings in a young new coach with new scheme and then doesn’t get to use it during the joint practices. Then our KR gets hurt in action.

I’m hoping that the Packers hold Rodgers out for Thursday’s game against the Texans. While I support the concept of joint practices with another team I’m not sure that it is a good idea for the teams to square off 3 times in the same week with the last time being a game.

I would not be surprised if Thursday’s game becomes quite chippy with cheap shots and unnecessary shots. Both teams are probably tired of seeing each other at this point. We don’t need some Texan player who won’t even be in the league in a few weeks taking a late shot at Rodgers in a desperate attempt to make the team.

I agree with the Bears approach of keeping the team as healthy as possible until 9/5. Let the bottom of the roster get slaughtered in the preseason games. Rest the starters and get them healthy and ready for the season. Thanks, Since ‘61

I think they should give #12 a series on Thursday night. Maybe even let him throw the ball once or twice. But put him out there, get him started in game with checks and adjustments, then get him out before anyone takes his head off.

"I agree with the Bears approach of keeping the team as healthy as possible until 9/5. "

All in favor of them being as rusty as possible for the opener.

Dobber, I take your point..However, I think Rodgers took about 30 snaps throughout all of the 2018 preseason. Yet he was able to lead a second half comeback on one leg against the Bears in week 1 and put up 29 points against the vaunted Vikings defense in week 2 in a game the officials stole from the Packers.

I appreciate that this season Rodgers is learning a new offense but will another 6-10 snaps running a vanilla offense make much of a difference? Is it worth the risk not just to Rodgers but to any of our key players? I don't think so. Of course I don't like pre season games to begin with. I believe they are injury factories that just weaken regular season play due to the players lost for no purpose. Jordy Nelson was never the same after his pointless injury during the 2015 preseason as an example. Neither was the Packers offense for that matter.

Use the preseason games to evaluate our draft picks and depth. Kizer, Boyle and Watkins need the reps much more than Rodgers or any of the other starters. I would be fine if the league went down to 2 preseason games for evaluation purposes with more practice time so that teams could actually improve their execution for the regular season rather than spend the first 2-4 games of the regular season bumbling through to get ready to play. Lack of practice is hurting the quality of play as much as anything. Add in the unnecessary injuries to starting players during the preseason and the regular season is nearly unwatchable.

BTW, you are overdue for a cookie so today you'll get two. Be well.
Thanks, Since '61

My question is "Has the offense shown any signs of brilliance?" Every report makes it sound like the offense is nowhere close to being competitive yet.

Yes, there have been flashes, but too often it looks like it is tripping over itself. It’s just not a well oiled machine. It didn’t help that the joint practice offense was about as basic as one can get. But still too many mistakes pre and post snap.

That was Aaron Rodgers point against the joint practices. They haven't even finished the installation of Matt LaFleurs offensive scheme yet and they're spending days running vanilla plays so they don't show other teams anything.

That is a good point. Need all the time for installing and practicing the full offense, then lose two days to running vanilla plays that every offense runs.

Come on fans,

ARod's comments went both ways. And, as he said, he can see the benefit of the extra work. Think about how much you improve playing racquetball every day against an opponent you can beat all the time. You don't need to improve to win, and that gets boring.

2 days of different practice isn't going to kill the O. They still have a month to practice and learn.

Rome was not built in a day. But it got built.
