Packers Practice Roundup: August 24, 2021

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

Practice goes 1:58 and finishes inside after lightning in the area.  Demovsky  [Padded practice.]

Absent with injury from Packers Tuesday practice: Funchess Blair Redmond V. Scott Z. Smith Kelly Winfree.  Reiner

With S Will Redmond on injured reserve (toe), CB Ka'dar Hollman [traded] to the Texans for a 2022 seventh-round pick, LB Kamal Martin, DT Josh Avery and TE Daniel Crawford [released], the Packers get down to 80.  Demovsky  [Never should have taken Redmond off NFI - now he costs money.  Redmond is not eligible to return but might take an injury settlement.  Hate releasing Avery - plenty of other options who have less long-term value.]

Will Redmond [is a] pretty significant loss considering Redmond can play every position in the secondary, and Matt LaFleur today called him their best special teamer over the past two seasons.  Wood  [I guess that’s why they took him off NFI.  Maybe I am just cheap.  Randy Ramsey was also very good on STs.  Not looking good for STs.]

Just to clarify, Redmond is done for the year, unless the Packers do an injury settlement. As a vested veteran, he goes straight to IR. If there is a settlement, he could return but not until 3 weeks beyond the length of the settlement (weeks of pay they agree on).  Silverstein [Good explanation.]

One agent says Packers co-director of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan will be running a team in a few years. I wouldn't be surprised.  Schneidman

Summers is back on the field in pads.  Demovsky

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Aaron Jones getting more team work today. Catches a pass from Rodgers off a wheel route with Garvin trailing.  Hodkiewicz

Aaron Rodgers put on a show with a 50-yard TD to MVS vs. Stokes. Demovsky

One of the best throws I’ve seen Aaron Rodgers make in the last couple years. An absolute dime of a deep ball down the left sideline to MVS that traveled about 60 yards in the air. Eric Stokes in coverage. MVS fully outstretched his arms to reel in the TD.  Schneidman [Same play as above - couldn’t resist the redundancy given the description!  Good coverage by Stokes per Silverstein.]

Love with a really nice touch pass to Dexter Williams for a 4-yard TD with a heavy blitz coming at him up the middle. Put it just outside the fingertips of S Christian Uphoff.  Silverstein

Williams did a nice job of regaining his balance after catching the ball and avoiding stepping out of bounds.  Reiner [On the nice touch pass for a 4 yard TD.]

Jordan Love overcame a slow start (the duck and the INT) and competed 6 in a row including one with serious zip to Malik Taylor.  2) Love goes 1-for-4 passing in the second team period. One of his throws was the duck of all ducks. But he came back with a nice throw to Begelton on a crosser.    Demovsky

CB Shemar Jean-Charles picks off Jordan Love on a deep ball down the sideline to Malik Taylor.  Silverstein

TIGHT ENDS:

Age is just a number. Rodgers hits a wide open Marcedes Lewis down the seam. Lewis had to make adjustment to catch it but hauls it in to get team going.  Hodkiewicz  [Tonyan caught a pass as well which is described under DBs.]

OFFENSIVE LINE:

Packers starting OL in padded 11 on 11 Tuesday: LT: Jenkins LG: Patrick C: Myers RG: Newman RT: Turner.  2) Runyan comes in to replace Patrick after a handful of plays.  Reiner

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

I’d be shocked if Black doesn’t make it. That leaves 1-2 spots for Scott, Gaines, Uphoff. Scott is also battling injury.  Herman

Largely picking on Eric Stokes. Chandon Sullivan also beat by Robert Tonyan for a TD that Tonyan somehow held onto through tight coverage.  Schneidman

Rookie CB Eric Stokes with a rough series. First the Cobb TD, then commits a PI against MVS, then he gives up a 6-yard TD on a great throw and catch from Rodgers to MVS at the pylon.  2) CB Eric Stokes had an opportunity for a rare pick- 6 against Rodgers on a soft throw to the outside to Cobb. He just missed it and Cobb went in for a 25-yard TD.  Silverstein

Kevin King with a nice pass deflection on MVS pass near sideline off corner route.  Hodkiewicz

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Hunter Bradley short-hoppped a couple snaps during field-goal period, but luckily for the Packers JK Scott has good hands and Mason Crosby makes everything.  Schneidman

Crosby perfect on six FGs. Bradley just 3-6 on snaps though. Scott has great hands.  Huber

It seems so odd that Crosby is the only specialist with “competition” in camp. Scott and Bradley haven’t been good, at all, while Crosby has been great. Very puzzling.  Herman  [And they dumped Avery instead of Molson?]

Not like Jaire Alexander is on the roster bubble and needs to flex any versatility… but here’s Mason Crosby helping him kick a FG (!!) and JK Scott adjusting his hold.  Hopmayer  [About a 35 yard FG from a tee, but he made it room to spare.]

For a long practice, not very many tweets. The important thing was that Jordan Love practiced in full pads against a rush. Absent a setback, it sounds like he will be good to go against Buffalo. Fingers crossed. So, I chose to use a photo of Jordan Love.

Noticed Garvin in trail coverage. It seems to me that there have been tweets noting Garvin in coverage in prior practices. Something Coldworld wrote brought this to mind, or focused my attention on it. Also, Bakh said he liked getting reps against Garvin because of Garvin's unusual strength. OTOH, coaches essentially said he was awful on STs.

So, maybe I've got my undies in a bunch over the release of Josh Avery. Quite possibly a fair statement. Still, it seems like there were other ways to get down to 80. I suppose it is more likely that Avery will not be heard of again than that he becomes a player for someone else. I suppose GB could still sign him to the PS depending on interest from other teams.

Silverstein recalled that the Packers put Brett Goode on the IR but reached an injury settlement. Later that same year, after the number of weeks the settlement called for plus 3 additional weeks transpired the Packer re-signed Goode. That's rare for a few reasons. If Redmond reaches a settlement for two game checks, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He can sign with anyone - except the Packers - right away. He would not be able to re-sign with GB until October 11. Most players won't pass up paychecks if another team is willing to sign them earlier than the rules allow the Packers to.

STs were kind of funny. Molson IIRC has made his field goals in TC. Not harping on Molson, but it is hard to believe that he has a chance in GB this year, anyway. Maybe they want him for the PS? Crosby ain't getting any younger and he is fairly expensive: $4.7M cap with $2.4M in cap savings in 2022.

Avery’s release really surprised me. He looked good in limited action, wanted him on our PS. As you suggest, I can’t figure out why we have Molson still.

I wonder if it hurts or helps someone like Stokes going up against the likes of Adams and Rodgers day after day in camp?

There's the obvious upside of competing against and learning from (being schooled by?) the very best in the game, but after getting toasted on the regular, it has to gnaw at the self-confidence and belief.

If he comes out of it on the right side, he'll be better for it, though.

As a person who plays sports I have to agree with you. There is a delicate balance between the loss of confidence and improvement by playing with or against better players. I have found the latter to be worth the risk of loss of confidence. The good thing is Stokes has Alexander to lean on. Alexander had to go through the same process and came out better for it.

Savage57 - It's the best way to get Stokes adjusted to the speed of the NFL game and to prepare him to take over for King. If he can compete against Rodgers to Adams he can compete against any QB/receiver combo in the league. Hopefully he will find that practice is harder than the real games when he gets on the field.

I think he will be fine. Be well. Thanks, Since '61

Like Murph said. Plus Stokes rarely saw the kind of raw talent he is seeing in TC. Adam's skills in route running and MVS's raw speed is something Stokes seldom saw at college. We sometimes forget how large the gap in talent and skill level between Division 1 and the NFL really is.

Stokes went up against plenty of talent in college, just not seasoned NFL vets. Just last year he was isolated against three first round WRs, Toney, Waddle, and heisman winner Smith. The prior year he covered first rounder Jordan Jefferson and first rounder this year Jamar Chase. Prior year Went against top pick in the draft at qb and heisman winner Joe Burrow and first rounder Tua. Last year vs first rounder Mack Jones and second rounder Kyle Trask at qb. Those first round WRs - especially Chase, Waddle, and Toney tested outrageously as raw/elite athletes. While not nfl veterans like Adams and MVS, out of any corner out there Stokes was tested against the best coming out of college.

Scott’s great hands might help him keep his job. I tend to forget it’s also his job to hold for Crosby. Can’t underestimate what it means to have a reliable holder that a kicker trusts.

I agree, but how hard can it be to find a good long snapper? One would think if you're in the NFL that has to be the easiest position. Yet, the Packers can't find one.

If it is not hard, name one young, available and good to excellent LS?

Thanks James

I wouldn’t be surprised if both Bradley and Scott are replaced at the cut down. The new guys would have 2 weeks to work with Crosby.

Gutey has done a great job bringing in talent but apparently specialists aren’t his bag. Both of these guys need to be replaced yesterday!

Good thing they drafted Hunter. Curious how many long snappers have been drafted in the 7 round era. A long snapper and punter in same draft has to be unprecedented

The Packers drafted Clark Harris in roughly 2007 in the 7th round. Listed as a tight end he didn't make the team. Harris went on to have a very long career as a very good long snapper.

The real disappointment is that Benkert isn't in a fair QB competition with Love. He should be, he's the better QB with the higher ceiling, but we all expected that Love will be force fed down the throats of Packers fans for years. That is before the reality that he's not an NFL talent actually finds it's way into the mind of a GM who just can't admit his mistakes. Not a fan. Hope he has to face a heavy does of the #1 Buffalo Defense so we can all come to the reality of the player. Him playing against any strong mix of #1's on the field would be appreciated. I need to see something other than check down Sally in the Bills game.

That's like saying Kaufusi needs to be in a "real" competition with Deguara. Emotions and opinions are not facts and data.

Benkert's goal is to convince the Packers he is worthy of the practice squad.

The VOR - to be fair Benkert was an undrafted FA in 2018. This is his 4th season in the league and he has yet to do anything. To say that he has more upside than Love is a bit of a "rush to judgement" considering that Love has not had a chance yet to complete his first preseason.

As of today Benkert is more likely a PS guy while Love likely still has enough upside to become a starter in the NFL at some point. Love may not be ready to start until 2022 or 2023 but we need to give him a fair chance. As for Benkert if he has all of the upside that you mention he would have caught on with another team by now at least as a backup. Thanks, Since '61

Is this satire? Benkert currently has the 55th best QBR in the preseason. That is with literally 5 starting qbs even playing. Meaning he would probably be like 80th. He is PfFs 35th best rated and would drop to like 60 with he starters playing. He is the definition of a JAG. But don’t let the stats/facts get in the way of some solid humor.

JK is just so maddeningly inconsistent. He does not seem to possess the intensity/competitive gene that most all good fb players possess. He goes out there as if he's about to fly a kite, then is only slightly saddened when his kite flies into the neighbor's trees. I don't need a rah-rah kicker, but you better be there to compete hard with your teammates, coaches and trainers. He doesn't appear to be all in. Sorry JK, just my worthless analysis. GPG!

WHY have Scott and Bradley not been replaced yet??? And WHY do our special teams always suck? It looks like the DL and ILB might have temporarily been patched up with Slaton and Heflin? Finally? I hope so...
