Packers Practice Roundup: August 16, 2022. The Scrimmage, Part One

Packers defense dominates the scrimmage with the Saints.

There were a lot of people on the field today due to the scrimmage with the New Orleans Saints.  Normally, the Packers' number one offense works against the Packers' number one defense at the north end of the field, while the twos battle each other on the south end.  The credentialed media have seats reserved for them at the north end of the field.

Today, the Packers' number one offense worked against the Saints' number one defense at the north end while at the same time the Saints' number one offense worked against the Packers' number one defense on the south end of the field.  I was sitting in the middle and my head was on a swivel.  Matt Schneidman wrote: "I only watched Packers D vs. Saints O today since I haven’t cloned myself yet. Will watch Packers O vs. Saints D tomorrow on the other field.I was smiling thinking that all the tweets today would be about the Packers' offense."  Apparently, Mr. Schneidman elected either to focus on the south end or to sit on the south end of the field.  Wes Hodkiewicz also couldn't see the south end very well: "Somebody sacked Book in twos." (Number 2 Packer D vs. #2 NO offense.)

As a note, Jameis Winston did not suit up today for the Saints.  Andy Dalton took the number one reps for the Saints.

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

The Packers also released LB Ellis Brooks, an undrafted rookie from Penn State.  The Packers released TE Dominique Dafney, RB BJ Baylor and OL George Moore to get down to 85 by today’s deadline.  2) Packers released C Cole Schneider and CB Donte Vaughn. Schneidman  [Packers got down to 84.  TGR]

Packers worked out defensive backs Marcus Murphy, Kendall Karcz, De'Vante Cross, Josh Saunders.  Aaron Wilson through Andy Herman's retweet.

The Packers have claimed TE Nate Becker off of waivers from the Panthers.  Field Yates

Elgton Jenkins, Robert Tonyan and Christian Watson will not do team drills against the Saints.  Schneiman

Rashan Gary spent about six minutes inside earlier and came back out with team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie, and he’s not on the field for start of two minute. OLB Kobe Jones is instead. Gary on the sideline with a helmet on.  2) Word is that Rashan Gary is fine, for those wondering. He seemed ready to go back in, anyway.  Schneidman  [Apparently, it is minor and done as a precaution, but it bears watching.  TGR]

Don’t see Danny Davis in the “young player” period. Don’t think he ever came back after going in the Hutson Center.  Herman [Earlier, Danny Davis came up limping and was on the ground for a couple of minutes on the east side of the field not far from me.  He was not carted off or anything.  He limped noticeably across the field and went inside.  TGR]

The Saints done marched in.  Wood [With video of the Saints players entering the field.  So bad, but good enough that I had to put it in the roundup.  TGR]

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Aaron Rodgers said he "felt bad" for Jordan Love with so much he couldn't control going wrong around him Friday night in SF: "It might look bad on the stat sheet with three picks, but the film tells a very different story." A solid endorsement of Love's preseason opener.  Wood

Packers number two offense goes nowhere and doesn’t pick up a first in 2 min drill. 2) Rodgers incomplete to Doubs on the outside. Ball was overthrown. Packers settle for a FG attempt in 2 min drill. False start by fg team backs it up 5 yards.  3)  Sammy Watkins with an outstretched catch over the middle. His best day of camp but it gets called back on what we think is a holding penalty. Holy shit what a catch by Lazard with CJ Gardner Johnson in coverage. An absolute beast mode leaping catch by 13.  4) Sammy Watkins biggest play of camp so far on a free play. Rodgers hits him deep down sideline for a likely TD.   5) Love to Hyman for a nice pickup.  6)  Rodgers misses Watkins badly - he had a step.  7) Rodgers and Winfree not on the same page along the sidelines.  Herman [Lazard's catch was dominant looking, with some swagger and YAC.  Watkins looked like a #1 WR to me today.  Watkins is bigger, more strongly built than I thought.  TGR]

Jordan Love tries to hit Malik Taylor deep down the left sideline on third & 9, but his pass is under thrown. Saints CB Bradley Roby picks it. It’s been all Saints defense early.  Wood

Holding on Winfree (seemed a bit weak) but a nice swing pass to Jones comes back.  Herman

Good protection buys Love time and he finds Winfree for the last TD of red zone.  Hodkiewicz

Asked Aaron Rodgers if the Packers have a WR pecking order emerging in his mind. He named WR1 Allen Lazard, "premier slot receiver in the league" Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins, who 12 says had his best practice today. "And then there's a lot of opportunity after that."  2) Aaron Rodgers didn’t hold back on wanting more from his young receivers: “We’ve got to be way more consistent. A lot of drops, a lot of bad route decisions, running the wrong route. We’ve got to get better in that area.”  3) Aaron Rodgers is not pleased with drops from his young receivers. Asked him if he meant this play specifically [Romeo Doubs toasts Saints CB Bradley Roby deep down the right sideline, but the #Packers rookie drops a perfect ball from Aaron Rodgers. Oof..] "No, not necessarily," he said. "But that was my best throw of the day."  Wood

Aaron Rodgers is feeling urgency to get the passing game squared away. Asked generically after Day 1 of joint practices if he’ll be reluctant to throw the ball to someone who has dropped too many passes, he said, “Yeah, he just won’t be out there.”  Huber

Doubs:  Romeo Doubs forcing the DPI on first pass against Lattimore.  2) Romeo Doubs with a TD by the pylons in red zone. Remarkable how good of a feel he has for where the sideline is for a rookie.  Hodkiewicz

Rodgers nearly had a highlight deep throw to Doubs against Roby but Doubs can’t bring it in.  Herman  [Doubs had separation, but I couldn't see the east side of the field because people stood up.  I gather he dropped it. TGR]

Romeo Doubs has seemingly passed every test the Packers have thrown at him: practice, the preseason opener and now joint practice vs. the Saints with a toe-tapping TD on an out from Aaron Rodgers.  Demovsky  [Before the drop of the beautiful dime deep against Roby that Doubs dropped.  TGR]

Romeo Doubs cooks his opponent off the line and is WIDE open. Too bad the ball went to the other side of the field to Winfree (incomplete) as this was going for 6 - you can see Doubs’ frustration as he knew he was taking that one to the house.  Ken Ingalls [He has some great video available of some of the plays. Click here for those.  With this video.  Doubs gets open against NFL DBs.  The drops are perhaps becoming an issue.  TGR]

TIGHT ENDS:

Jordan Love finds Tyler Davis in stride on a crosser.  2) Unreal pass pro by Marcedes Lewis on the edge. Gives Rodgers time but pass is broken up. Ref calls dpi on Saints.  3) Dafney release is seemingly great news for Tyler Davis. You’d think they’d go into the season with at least 4 with Tonyan returning from injury. Tough to imagine it’s not Tonyan - Deguara - Lewis - Davis.  Herman

A surprise player who caught my eye in practice today was TE Alize Mack who saw some extended action with Dafney cut earlier in the day. Dude had some nice blocks and was moving across the formation in both the run & pass game. Also the guy may lift weights from time to time…  Ken Ingalls

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Starting OL - Yosh - JRJ - Myers - Hanson - Newman Watkins - Lazard - Lewis - Cobb - Jones - Rodgers round out the starters.  Herman

Dillon nice run up the middle. The offensive line has settled down nicely today. Rodgers tries to hit Tyler Davis on a slant but not on the same page and ball hits Marcus Maye low but in the hands. Falls Incomplete. Pressure by Saints leads to a Rodgers throwaway.  2) Nice block by Zach Tom and a great cut by Dexter Williams. Pick up of about 5.  [Tom played a bunch of LG along with Caleb Jones at LT.  TGR] 3) Dillon tries to bounce outside - Saints defense all over it. Patrick Taylor stuffed by Malcolm Roach. Former Badger Zach Baun gets to the sideline for another stop of Taylor.  Herman

Caleb Jones got a pancake but Bradley Roby picked Love deep. There was a flag.  Hodkiewicz

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

TJ Slaton with a sack on Book. Coverage was fantastic downfield.  2) Lowry with a great pressure and then bats the pass away. This defensive line remains super impressive. And right after the line combined for a sack. Credit the coverage on the back end.  3) Jarran Reed has been a revelation. Wins quick inside and stuffs Ingrim. 90 has made plays every single day. Unreal start for him.  4) The Saints OL has had no answers for the Packers front. Immediately surround Dalton here and tip the ball at the line.  Dalton is struggling. He misses Thomas again - solid coverage by Douglas. Defenses are absolutely dominating both sides early.  5)  Lowry busts through the line, Dalton throws one 10 yards over the head of Thomas.  6) Watching some defense now. Jarran Reed and Rashan Gary meet at the QB to force a checkdown.  Herman

Kamara finding a groove on the ground now for Saints. Couple good runs. Then Dalton hits Thomas on a comeback in front of Alexander. Best sequence for Saints.  Spofford

Packers second defense in 2-minute drill vs. Saints: DL: Lowry, Wyatt OLB: Garvin, Galeia ILB: Barnes, McDuffie CB: Jean-Charles, Gafford, Nixon S: Scott, Davis.  2) Results from this Packers vs. Saints 2-minute doll: GB 1 offense: 3 points NO 1 offense: 3 and out GB 2 offense: 3 and out NO 2 offense: 1 first down.  Wood

LINEBACKERS:

Kingsley Enagbare has put together a couple really good days in a row. Sniffed out a pass in the flat earlier, had a sack and would’ve just had another TFL after he perfectly read a keeper by Ian Book. Rookie edge rusher making a strong case for OLB3.  2) Alvin Kamara caught a TD pass in the flat with Quay Walker in coverage. Just about the only significant positive for Saints O in red-zone period. Kingsley Enagbare multiple big plays. Preston Smith, Jonathan Garvin, Jarran Reed, Dean Lowry with “sacks” or stuffs, too.  Schneidman

Enagbare just closed the back door too perfection. Came right down the line and made the tackle on the backfield. He played that beyond perfectly.  2) Now Enagbare and Tipa meet at the qb for a potential sack.  3) Kobe Jones having a sneaky strong camp. Combines with Slaton for a tackle at the line. Ento can’t hang on to a one-handed pick. And now Kobe Jones with a sack. I think he has 3 sacks and a stuff already today.  4) Enagbare getting in on the sack party. It has been insane to watch the pressure this defense is getting. It’s become a shock when they aren’t in the backfield.  5) Quay Walker finding out that Alvin Kamara is not a fun matchup. Beautiful route by Kamara to get open outside for a touchdown. (Same play as the Schneidman tweet above).  6  Kobe Jones and Devonte Wyatt combine for a sack. Give the nod to Jones. 7) Quay Walker comes off the edge and forced a hold on Ramczyk - Quay still would have got the sack. Wow play for Quay.  8) McDuffie all over a Landry crosser. He’s been great.  9) The entire front collapses the pocket but credit Preston with the “sack”. Reed, Clark, Gary the others.  [Preston sniffed out a rollout and chased the NO QB out of bounds on another play.  Both were running flat out.  TGR]  Herman

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Jaire Alexander locks up Michael Thomas over the middle on third down during two minute for the PBU to force a punt. Jaire, Rasul Douglas and Eric Stokes just turned up in the middle of the field.  2) [Earlier in practice] Saints O got a couple plays rolling there. Really good coverage by Jaire, even better catch by Thomas.  [If this is the play I am thinking of, #1 Jaire was really stoked about that play and let everyone know it.   TGR]  3) Packers defense just put on an absolute clinic against the Saints offense. Pocket collapsing repeatedly. Tight coverage all over. Rasul Douglas is talking an incredible amount of shit. Just a preposterous amount. Shawn Davis caps the period with a pick-six of QB Ian Book.  Schneidman

Vernon Scott all over a quick completion.  2) Back on defense. And another sack. By my count that’s like 1,000. Gary and Preston combine for this one. Kamara with a sweet cut - Amos fills the gap nicely.  [Some sacks were coverage sacks, so I put one tweet under DBs.]  3) Shawn Davis with a pick six on Ian Book!  4) Douglas pbu on a pass attended for Landry. Nice play by 29.   Herman

SPECIAL TEAMS:

CB Kiondre Thomas just stonewalled Saints gunner Tre’Quan Smith out of bounds. Didn’t let him get 5 yards downfield. Smith incredulous with ref for not throwing flag for continuing to block out of bounds.  Wood [I saw that one.  I thought an altercation might break out.  Nasty hit to get him down, and then kept him down.  TGR]

In punt drill, Packers gunner Rico Gafford just got blocked about 5 yards out of bounds against a Saints double team. Almost took out about 10 Saints players on their sideline in the process.  Herman

Now Samori Toure gets mauled out of bounds by Saints double team as a gunner. Saints players had moved their sideline this time. Wise choice.  Wood

Ahmed good from 40.  Herman [In 2-minute drill.]

Ahmed drills em from 50, 51 and 54. Slow start but finished strong.  2) Adrian Amos is the personal protector again on punts with Leavitt out.  Hodkiewicz

According to Packers.com Depth Chart, Gafford is our #1 Kick return guy. He’d be like our 6th CB. It doesn’t sound like he’s a demon gunner.

I’m also kind of surprised that Caleb Jones is playing at LT. I just think any guy that enormous is going to have trouble with speed rushers

They can, But a guy that tall and long doesn't need a great kiick step to cover much area. He is 6'9" so one step is a step and a half for most tackles. You can't bull rush him either unless you want to get eaten...

I watched Caleb a couple of times using binoculars to help me zone in. Tom was playing LG so that was nice because I could watch both. I saw Tom's false start, for example, before the refs blew the whistle. That means they were on the twos.

All I can say is that Caleb's feet are better than expected. I can say that his feet are not obviously slow. Are they good? I don't have an opinion (and I usually do!). His feet looked good enough to me. During the handful of reps I watched he had no issues with any defender, but then, I don't know if the Saints' player was a speed rusher. One Saint attacked Jones' left shoulder and then spun inside, but Caleb had no issue with that move and stoned it. How good was that Saint player? IDK - couldn't even get his number.

It is true that the first time I saw Zach Tom I immediately noticed how good Tom's feet are. So, Caleb is not at that level. OTOH, I didn't notice the feet of some other Packers OL particularly. BTW: watched Newman at RT. He looked less than average there to me. I guess he didn't look terrible, but not much movement on runs. In fact, GB's runs that worked went up the middle and to the left all practice with the ones.

Jones has massively long 36" arms and an enormous wingspan of 86 and 5/8ths inches. Bakh has a wingspan of 79 and 3/4ths inches. That should help Jones, but IDK if it will prove to be enough. All I know is he is kind of fun to watch.

Could come down to whether they want a coverage OLB or not. Galeai had made some plays too. Jones' sack in the game Friday impressed me, really showed some strength. Ideally a PS guy.

May well be. Still, his day. I think that they will probably keep a DPR, but they are using ILBs more, so not a certainty.

I was going to use Kobe Jones' photo. I couldn't find one with him in a GB uniform. I found one that said it was of Kobe but the photo did not show his number or his name and it had Enagbare standing next to him clear as day: everyone would have thought it was a photo of Enagbare, which would have been a reasonable choice as he had a good day.

So, I used a photo of Rasul Douglas. He had a good day, the DBs had a good day, and some of those sacks were coverage sacks. The pressure was consistently good, Herman and Schneidman were correct, but sacks are generally a combo of getting to the QB and good coverage.

One of those Doubs clips from Ingalls that TGR linked shows Doubs doing a good job off the LOS vs press. Very good to see, doubt he saw much press in college.

Well, it is the only way I am going to win any rep. In a bit of a pre-celebration, I ate a couple of Sausage, Egg McMuffins while waiting 90 minutes for practice to start. [90 minutes is a while, so I checked my phone, read CHTV, and then read a paperback I brought.] I went to Andruzzi's after practice for some liquid libation. And while writing this article I ate a Sundae. To say I'd need a year in the weight room would be a gross underestimation!

Wow didnt take long for Rodgers to confirm what I suspected: we got some wide receivers who cant learn the play book, drop a lot of passes and are inconsistent.
Rodgers was already carping that 'the new guys, need a lot of work' and the ones he and coaches dont like, wont play.
I thought all along last year that Amari maybe not too bright and thus couldnt cut it even as a third string pick he didnt get in the offense.
Had to be a reason you not playing a third stringer once in a while.
Could be a long long frustrated year for Rodgers. Who knows maybe these guys will chase him out of the building.

Exactly what should have been expected by all of us with rookies. Things are different in the pros. It’s surprising that Doubs has been as good as he has. However, Rodgers will struggle if he tries to stick to Lazard, Cobb and Watkins, so there might be a need to bend. If he won’t, we will have issues. That’s always been a tacit concern with the post Adams set up.

I agree. As I have posted here several times, I am growing beyong tired of all receivers having to pass the "Rodgers trusting tree" challenge. This is simply ridiculous and pure ego. This is not a thing ANYWHERE else. If a player is drafted by Brian Gutekunst, that same player is then deemed by the position coaches, OC and MLF to be ready to be on the field, then that is all that is needed. Period. Aaron Rodgers does not coach the fu@k%ng team. He is a player. MLF needs to reign this in. He is not Rodgers buddy but the Head Coach. This is my main criticsm of MLF, he needs to grow a pair and assert himself with Rodgers.

This is one of the differences between Rodgers and Brady. I have never once heard something like this from Brady ever. He played with Julien Edelman as his #1 and a bunch of scrubs in NE...never said anything like this, just threw to multiple no name players and won Super Bowls, plural, 6 of them. Brady checks his ego at the door for the betterment of the team, Player/GM does not.

Very different era, but Imagine Bart Starr saying something like this or if Rodgers were QB then. I would love to hear the response from Vince Lombardi....

Yeah, he should be handing out orange slices and telling the kids how nice their participation trophies are going to be. What's wrong with him?

I'd rather they be put under pressure now than see them fold in the regular season when a game is on the line. If the focus doesn't improve they can always try harder next year. Besides he exaggerated things a bit, MVS had quite a few drops and was still on the field. They're going to need a deep threat and that's Watson or Doubs.

My own recollection is that Brady was quite exacting in his WR requirements and could be vocal about them. To be fair, Brady also needed to know where his WRs would be as knowing where to throw the ball was one of his biggest strengths. Maybe others here can opine because I acknowledge my memory is not great.

Tone doesn't convey well in print. It may be that AR was disgusted and petulant, or he may have said it in a manner that was more stick and carrot. Perhaps there is video of the interview. At least he stuck up for Jordan Love, a point I don't think should be ignored. And if he threw his WRs under the bus a bit to do that, so be it, since learning the routes is correctable whereas saying the WRs just don't have the talent necessary for Love to succeed would be something to condemn. No question AR is a diva. Watching Doubs drop that TD pass brought back memories of J'mon Moore, but also of James Jones.

[Edit: to evaluate the INTs, one probably have to criticize the OL, the receivers, or the QB. I don't remember excessive pressure on the INTs, so that leaves the WRs/TE or the QB. I actually think the placement on the Doubs INT was partially to blame, but that's me. It seems to me GB had a DB just take the ball away from a receiver last year or perhaps the year before, but it doesn't happen often, so I definitely put some blame on Doubs for that INT. Anyway, AR supported Love, which I think is good. Coaches said routes were run incorrectly, and I don't see as much hesitation or staring down of Tyler Davis as some did. That's arguable and I am no expert.]

I agree to the point that no.12 said some of things in support of Love because of the hate he has been getting.
Just the other week didn't he praise all our young receiver core in public and if i a not wrong many here were ecstatic with such comments from our MVP. Now as the season is nearing he was again harsh on the young receiver since there were many drops and wrong routes being run and I totally support that as this is NFL and they are all pros and should know how to take the praise as well as the blame.
If i remember correct he was tough on Adams too for the first two season and look at where he is now leading receiver in NFL and guess he expects Doubs to be the next Adams and that is why he is tough on him.

I can recall Brady tearing his guys a new one on national TV often, and I'm damn sure he's never checked his ego at the door for anything. Here's a partial list of the "bunch of scrubs" and "multiple no name players" Brady threw regular season TD passes to during his time in NE. Several of the "scrubs" names seem vaguely familiar to me.

Rob Gronkowski (78)
Randy Moss (39)
Julian Edelman (36)
Wes Welker (34)
James White (24)
Deion Branch (24)
Aaron Hernandez (18)
Daniel Graham (17)
Benjamin Watson (17)
David Patten (16)

Last time they drafted three WRs, Aaron complained about them in camp, so I don't know if it means a whole lot. As for Amari, when Aaron insisted on bringing Cobb back, that severely reduced his chance of playing a large role in the offense. This year at least he's getting more of a look in training camp with Cobb not playing very much. When the games count, Aaron is still going to prefer Cobb though.
