Packers Making the Right Moves

The Green Bay Packers made moves on trade day!

Clearly, that's a misleading statement to make that way, but it doesn't make it untrue.  No trades were made by the Packers but the lack of dealing and the few moves that the team did make show how confident they are in the current roster.

To make any trade, a team has to give something up but to improve a 7-1 team, the likelihood was that general manager Brian Gutekunst was going to have to deal some healthy draft capital and a player or two.  The value simply wasn't there and Gute held firm, keeping next year's draft whole, for the time being.

On Tuesday, Green Bay did clear two roster spots for tight end Jace Sternberger and safety Ibraheim Campbell to return from injury.

In the process, the Packers released tight end Evan Bayliss and receiver Darrius Shepherd.

Bayliss wasn't a surprising move as he was recently called up to add depth while Robert Tonyan has been out.

Shepherd's release came after a series of gaffes that simply couldn't be ignored anymore.  Another example of a move that needed to be made and while it seemed obvious to most everyone that Shepherd wasn't the answer at returner, letting a player in that spot go isn't without some disruption to the current roster.

Chandon Sullivan filled in on kick return and Tremon Smith was re-signed and will likely assume punt return duties.

Many want the flashy moves and bells & whistles as the trade deadline approaches.  It's akin to the first few days of free agency.  Fans seem to move from one name to the next as a target for their team whenever it's speculated in the media or even by other fans.

It's hard to argue with what Gutekunst has done this season so far.  Might not trading for a guy come back to bit this team?  It could.  Injuries could pop up or some other circumstance may make that the case, but the Packers wisely operate with what they have now and protect their future.

Right now, that equates to a team that has only one loss and several key wins in their quest to return to the postseason.  They've won four straight since losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, all without receiver Davante Adams in the lineup.

Adams would seem to provide a boost to the receiver group when he's back (tongue firmly planted in cheek) and he already knows the offense.  Probably a better addition than most outside receivers who would command a decent amount of draft capital.

Let's give some credit to head coach Matt LaFleur and staff for bringing an offense that can run off of the fuel of many different guys.  Namely, running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams who have been absolutely balling out and prime targets in the passing game.  That all negates the need to spend big for another player.  Unfortunately, there weren't any takers for mid-round picks in the spots the Packers were looking at.

Yes, teams should always be looking to improve and the Packers have been involved in more conversations than they have in the past 10 years.  That doesn't also mean they're acting like they're playing with Monopoly money.  That discipline and responsible maneuvering will seemingly pay off in the long run.

I still would have liked to see them get a big body for the D line or a inside linebacker who can tackle at the point of contact, Tony Morrison wasn't bad ,don't know where he is now. I don't know why Ty Summers hasn't gotten a chance yet playing inside, Burks is a liability.

There's a lot of assuming here. Assuming there was someone available. Assuming the other team wanted to make a deal. Assuming they would be better than the current guys (and in reality, GB rarely plays with more than one ILB). Assuming they don't want too much in return. With all these big FA contracts in 2019, GB is really going to need young cheap draft picks next year and 2021 to round out the roster and fill holes they won't be able to afford filling in FA. I don't want to see them give up draft capital for a spot that is not even a full-time role.

But I agree on adding bodies to stop the run, add aome physicality. We're soft in the middle.

I agree except I think Burks just needs playing time and I would even say that Martinez is a liability. We need a big body to play next to Clark and an inside backer and this defense would be set. I also woul like to see Summers get some snaps

As much as I would of liked to see another piece via trade I’m guessing the prices where too high this year and stayed that way till the end. Sanu for a 2nd, 3-4 for sanders. Leonard Williams for a 3 and a 5 I would have considered though. Well, now we move on, and hope we have enough and get and stay hot for the playoffs.

I thought the price for Williams was a fair one and would have been happy to see the Packers make that deal particularly since Williams is only 25. Thought the prices on Sanu and Sanders were high given their ages (30 and 32 respectively) and contracts. Let's hope the injury bug doesn't bite the middle of our defense.

Jason, this year the Packers have benefited greatly from innovative coaching and players stepping up. I'll agree with you on that point.

They have also benefited from a present relatively low injury toll on Offense.

Sure, WR1 Adams is presently out, but Rodgers is still Rodgers, the O-line is revisiting 2015 form (and giving Rodgers time), the TE's are blocking and being used as TE's and the RB's are hitting their year 3 experience\ production straps (and not injured).

I'm not convinced that taking any one of those contributing variables out doesn't tip the WR group down (and some W's to L's).

That said, I don't think that Gute wasn't out there wheeling and dealing his head off looking at options, but clearly the asking prices were too high (relatively), and I've been impressed with his judgement thus far (not overpaying Mack and getting the 2 Smith's and Amos for that money has been in hindsight a boon for the Packers).

Don't forget his other major move this year, reading the Mike Daniels injury situation correctly and cutting him while he could still save substantial money. That'll help next year. Meanwhile Daniels has 2 tackles on the season and who knows if he'll ever be a healthy dominant player again. Could have easily extended the guy over the offseason and gotten no pushback from fans, would have been an easy PR win for him.

Good point on Daniels. The axiom is that it's better to let a guy go early rather than keep him too long. I'm a big believer in playing the percentages, and in retrospect, this was a good percentage play.

Really, since when?
If you fair catch the ball on a punt it stays WHERE you caught it (barring penalty) and has always been that way. Fair catching the ball has NEVER been allowed on kick-offs.

As noted by the others, downed kickoffs (which cannot have a fair catch) start at the 25. It used to be the 20. Most of the kickoff returns I'm seeing across the league that start in the endzone don't make it to the 25. My conclusion is that if the ball is in the endzone, don't return it.

Punts can be, and should be, fair catches. The vast majority of returns are under 7 yards and when you factor in turnovers, penalties, and injuries, I think you benefit from not trying to return punts. Guard against fakes, try to pressure a short punt, but don't return them.

If you keep an eye out for it, you'll see it in game after game all across the league.....a rookie or minimum wage guy on special teams makes a mistake that hurts you. Aside from the occasional long return, it's better to not return punts and kicks should only be returned if you have to.

Gute can't change the way a player thinks and acts. After Kizer. Maybe it's a blessing. After Trevor Davis got traded. It sure didn't help the special teams. And regardless how good you want to look on paper. The costs of trying to get a quick fix, doesn't always pan out. There are other players that the packers just may hit on. They deserve their chance like Shepard got. If they fail, they know the price now.

This comment suggests that there were attractive deals on the table that Gute turned down. I don't know how we can come to that conclusion without knowing what the deals were. Gute trading two first rounders for OJ Howard would have been crazy, but maybe that was the asking price.

The patriots acquired the falcons 5th best offensive weapon for a 2nd rounder, and they traded away a high draft pick. I don't know that that's "doing whatever it takes to win".

I agree, but similarly we can't conclude that there weren't "attractive" offers on the table. If TT were still the GM, a fair amount of fans would assume that TT was just too cheap (or loved his draft picks too much) to pull the trigger. Gute so far has been very aggressive in free agency, so fans are inclined to believe that he is willing to take a risk. We seen him trade up and down in the draft aggressively too. Therefore, I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that there were no deals that I would have done.

Still, there seems to be a pattern in the NFL. New GMs dump coaches, spend money on free agents, and dump some of the old GM's draft picks. After TT cleaned up the cap mess left by Sherman, he spent a fair amount on Woodson and Pickett (not as much as Gute, but TT left Gute some cap space to use). Jettisoning the old GM's draft picks also seems common, and so far Gute has only dumped Biegel, Ripkowski, HHCD, and arguably Randall, Burnett, and Daniels, though the latter three were more likely due to age and off the field/attitude problems.

NE traded pick #60 (roughly) for Sanu. That does not sound attractive to me, but Brady is 42, not 35 (turning 36 in December). NE makes lots of trades, not a few of which are complete head-scratchers. They make it work. NE's drafts aren't particularly good.

Really good points TGR. NE have been very active in the trade market in recent years, and apart from the Sanu trade, generally deal in mid\late-rounders. I wonder if the metaphorical gas-tank for Brady is running out sooner than scripted and Bill is only banking on this and next year.

To your point re NE's draft success, they may or may not draft consistently well (considering where they consistently draft there's arguments either way), but gee Belichick knows how to construct a defense! His defensive talent-for-his-NE-scheme recognition ability is amazing.

Whether or not we Packer Fans like it, the Patriots are presently the standard by which all teams are measured, and due to their last 15-20 years of success they've earned that.
No one has made more chicken salad out of chicken $hit and succeeded at it like Belichick. He trades away draft picks year after year, yet he always seems to make another trade that fixes what he did 'last year'.
Gotta give credit where credit's due.

This is a team that whoops up on their division, yes, but they whoop up on everyone else, too. If they were getting into the playoffs at 10-6 every year by winning 6 games in their division, that would be one thing. They're not doing that. They haven't been as "bad" as 10 wins since 2009. They're regularly winning both in and out of the division, winning playoff games, and they get to--and win SBs. Not that I'm trying to be a Patriots defender, but you have to respect what they've done in an era of the game designed to prevent exactly what they've been able to accomplish.

metanoia76 quote "Translation: the Packers organization is happy to be "competitive" instead of doing what it takes to win super bowls."
The way you get to the Superbowl IS by being competitive.

While Belichick is a superb gameplanner and team manager, one thing he is pretty average at, is drafting players. For him, it is no big deal to give up draft picks, and for him, it works.

I still believe in balance between draft and develop, and veteran acquisitions. Ted relied too much on draft and develop, Gute has restored the balance with a greater emphasis on acquiring veterans to fill key spots. I am more than happy with the moves Gute has made to this point. His veteran acquisitions this year have been stellar. They were expensive, but they were very good and importantly they were (comparatively) young.

There were several potential blockbuster acquisitions deftly sidestepped. These include a first round price for Washington's 31 year old LT Trent Williams or even 2x 1sts and a 4th for disgruntled Jags 25 year old CB Jalen Ramsey, or even the Pats 2nd rounder for 30 year old Mohamed Sanu.

It's worth noting that one big downside of getting vets in, is that they will immediately be on premium price contracts, while draft picks are relatively cheap for several years. This imposes a need for balance on prudent teams. Sometimes a high price is worth paying, as seems to be the case with the Smiths and Amos, all of whom are on healthy contracts, but it must be done judiciously and with an eye on the cap. The Packers have made their big moves, but they were made early this year, not at cutdown time.

I dont agree with that@ metanoia76. Looks to me that they stretched the cap just enough not to hang themselves and picked up really good players via free agency. At the beginning of the draft i wanted a Wilkens pick and or maybe metcalf...but the Savage pick turned out to be worth its weight in gold, same with the Jenkins pick. Between the coaching, the players handling adversity and playing as a team....it surpassed my expectations so far. I have no clue how deep this team can go, bit it been a really fun ride so far.

Trenches, trenches, trenches it all starts in the trenches on offence and defense. Sure we have a great QB but how great would he be with a OL line like Chicago has? I really like how the Packers have been giving key players rest leading up to games. Splitting up the carries for running back seems to be working, how many times can a two hundred pound RB run into a three hundred pound linemen and be expected to survive. On the other hand getting tackled as a receiver by a DB is a lot better than a no neck linebacker, it tends to do wonders to the life expectancy of any running back.

I just hope we can make it through the next two weeks with no major injuries and rest the guys. Guys playing in the trenches really need that break as does the rest of the team. If we can just rest the horses in the trenches, we should be able to saddle them back up after the break and ride them into the playoffs and hopefully beyond.

Not making a move at the trade deadline was a very smart thing to do. With Free Agency and the Draft being so close together the odds of getting quality players is substantially better when other teams are very busy with the draft, signing there own free agents, looking at all the other players available and add to this the turmoil created by coaching changes. Which I am sure there will be plenty of this year.

I think we need to be thankful for the three headed Football Tirade (Mark M. Brian G. Matt L.) that guides our franchise and the stability it has created. You better believe they will have a plan in place that will be affordable, and keep and team ticking like a fine watch, all while other teams are mired in turmoil, of the copycat league, called the NFL.

We're 7-1 with the players we have. How much better would we be by making a trade and maybe giving away a player or two and a high draft pick? We can beat every team on our upcoming schedule with the team we have, especially if we stay healthy. We have already played through a difficult schedule without a bye for our first 8 games.

To me focusing on our tackling and improving our ST play will do more than adding a player who would need time to learn our offense or defense. We'll get Adams back soon and he's better than anyone we could trade for on offense or defense. We don't want our team to peak until after our week 11 bye week. Then we want to get hot during the final 6 games for our playoff run. Hit our peak during the playoffs and go deep, hopefully all the way.

For now we just need to go 1-0 versus the Chargers this week. Thanks, Since '61

Exactly. If you could guarantee that a certain player makes the difference, that's one thing, but if the guy "might" do it, then I don't think it's worth it.

The thing about High School coaching is that you don't get free agency and trades. You've got what you've got, and you work with it. Focus on improving, so we don't have guys getting loose like Kelce did for the TD. Focus on getting guys on the ground instead of making extra yardage.

Keep giving it to the backs on offense. It's moving the ball, scoring points, and winning games. It keeps our defense off the field. It keeps Rodgers from getting hurt....it's November now, and he's still real healthy, and there's a lot of teams in the league that can't say that about their QB.

Adams IS a better player than we could add via trade. The 'other' WRs on the team only need to be targeted a few times a game. Use Jones and Williams and Adams as your primary ball movers. Take an occasional shot with MSV or Allison or Lazard or Kumerow…..or the TE.

This offense, after a slow start at Chicago and at home against Minnesota, is averaging over 30ppg. That's good enough to win with. And our defense, other than the Eagles game, has held everybody to 24 or less, including some pretty good offensive teams, and some of the points were garbage time, like Dallas and Oakland.

Don't fix what isn't broken. Stay the course. Don't change horses in the middle of a stream. Whatever old aphorism you choose, the point is the same. We can make all the changes we want in February....right now, let's trust our gut and see what the team can do.

The best right moves on defense are getting the free agents they did. The two Smiths and Amos on defense.

The best moves on offense is using the backs more. Williams and Jones have caught as many passes this year at the half way mark as they did all of last year. This has made the Packers harder to defend and both RB's are good in space. Especially Jones.

More speed on defense, a good OL, good team attitude and better scheme to get receivers open are other adders to the success.

Our kick & punt return teams are HORRIBLE & they always are.... anyone here who has any games recorded, go back & watch any or all punt returns for us & against us.
Our blocking is pathetic. Non-existent. Could have had Devin Hester or Desmond Howard back there & it wouldn't have mattered other than at least they know how & when to catch the ball & when to signal for a fair catch.
Our kick return blocking is almost as bad.

Our coverage units are bad too. So much so, most Packer fans always hope Crosby's kickoffs are touchbacks & JK's punts are either fair-caught or go out of bounds inside the 20.

I agree that Shepherd had to go, sadly. But that doesn't absolve the overall units. Either they don't block, or they hold, block in the back!
Fix that s**t.

When they cut Sheppard I was hoping Menenga would get the boot as well. Are the players only held to account? Hope we aren't establishing a buddy system for coaches like the former coach did. I have never seen an opposing team deliberately hit the kick off short to stop the other team from reaching the 25 yard line, that's pathetic and I blame the coaching on that. As bad as they were, it didn't happen under Zook or Slocum from what I can recall.
If the ST play remains at this level going forward, to show the players and the fans all are held to account, Menenga shouldn't be given second chances, he's already been given them and the trap door should await him as well.

My biggest criticism of the off season was not hiring ST Coordinator Darren Rizzi. The Packers were one of the few teams he was considering and he came to Green Bay. They knew his price and instead of having a contract with that price ready for signature, it was reported that they tried to haggle with him.

How much better would their STs be with Rizzi? I obviously don't know. But I do know if they had hired him, I wouldn't worry about the problems on STs being coaching-related.

Gutekunst was being conservative. Other top teams like San Francisco and New England have been adding players in advance of the playoffs to give themselves the strongest team possible. The Packers could have brought in another ILB and another receiver as insurance if not an immediate upgrade on Allison. However, if Goodson and perhaps Burks can play more effectively, and if Lazard continues to improve as a WR then it could well be the case that the Packers were indeed judicious in not giving away draft capital for help at ILB and WR. This is a good team and if the offense continues to improve and the defense can improve tackling and limit the number of big plays then the Pack has a shot at making a deep run in the playoffs.

It could very well be that they view additions such as Campbell (who can fill the void left by Raven Greene's injury) and Adams' return from injury as bolstering the game day roster.

I agree in the suspicion is that BG was being judicious at the deadline: he didn't want to overpay in draft capital for rental players he couldn't resign and would also threaten a big part of his salary cap rollover that he will need to keep some of these core FAs around for next year and beyond. He doesn't want to end up like the Bears with no draft capital and being forced to turn bonuses into guarantees just to create a little breathing room under the cap. I think it shows his eye is not just on 2019, but 2020 and 2021...that's encouraging to me.

metanoia76: "Translation: the Packers organization is happy to be "competitive" instead of doing what it takes to win super bowls." How foolish. Thompson deserved the criticism of him for not using free agency to improve the team. Gutekunst does not. Go back to March 14th of this year and tell us how that wasn't 'doing what it takes'. metanoia76 is the kind of fan who would be doing cartwheels if the Packers would have acquired a player whose name he knew. Whether or not the move made sense or worked out. Gutekunst and LaFleur have both earned the benefit of the doubt.

Thompson may deserve criticism for not doing more in free agency, but he also deserves credit for not hurting the team by signing an expensive FA bust. It's two sides of the same coin.

The FAs that Gutekunst signed his first year.....Jimmy Graham and Muhammad Wilkerson...…..how do people feel about them? This year, all four of his big FA picks have stayed healthy and played well...A+. Next year, it could be different.

This stuff that metanoia76 says about being "competitive" instead of "Super Bowl or Bust" misses the target, IMO.

If your organization wins the division, you've had a successful season. That's 8 out of the 32 teams. If you win the division, you get a home playoff game and all the revenue that generates from the gift shop, parking, etc. Hotels and restaurants make more money.

So EVERYBODY should be happy, except those who insist that only one team has a successful season every year. Additionally, once you're in the playoffs, a lot of it comes down to your overall health and the bounce of the ball and the whim of the official. You know that's true.

If you could say "This player will ensure we'll win the Super Bowl" then of course, he's worth getting. But you can't say that. At this point, we're one of the better teams in the NFC. We're winning the division. We should make the playoffs and we might advance. We might even get a first round bye. And that's with the players we have. I don't really see anybody out there who would have improved the overall result very much.

Leatherhead,
While Thompson ignoring free agency for most of his tenure as GM does deserve criticism in my view, he certainly deserves credit for much that he did. Including putting a Super Bowl team on the field in 2014. None of the screw-ups in Seattle were his fault.

With regard to Gutekunst's first year in free agency, keep in mind he also signed Rodgers to a mega-contract that year. As soon as he had a shot at making the team significantly better in free agency, he did so.

For those disappointed the Packers didn't add a big name FA, I understand their frustration. But we don't know which deals Gutekunst attempted or the price for those deals. But just in his second year as GM, he's shown a willingness to use all avenues available to improve the team. What bothers me is fans who post as if it's the 'same old' Packers. That demonstrably is not true.

High Impact trades...didnt the Bears trade for Kahlil Mack in early September and in his first half was getting sacks and fumbles and int's and even touchdowns and the Bears lost that game ...on his way to Canton, may never get a title

What are packers fans thoughts on the Dillon pick? Aaron Jones and Williams have been a great one-two punch for the team. Is it just not worth signing a good RB to a larger contract? Jones isn't CMC but he's been decent in the passing game as well...
