Packers hopeful Jaire Alexander will return "in a matter of weeks"

The star cornerback will avoid surgery for his injured shoulder.

The Packers had been considering all their options regarding Jaire Alexander's shoulder injury, including surgery which would have most likely ended the star cornerback's season.

Head coach Matt LaFleur indicated on Friday, however, that the team won't be shutting down Jaire for the time being.

"We got better clarity with that," said LaFleur. "Certainly, it’s just one of those things we're going to let heal and see where it's at down the line before making that determination (on surgery). We’re hopeful it’ll heal the right way and he’ll be back with us in a matter of weeks"

Alexander is officially listed as Out for the Packers game against the Bengals on Sunday.

Fellow cornerback Kevin King was listed as a full participant during Friday's practice and should be back in the lineup against the Bengals.

They'll wait a couple or three weeks and then decide to have surgery, with the hope of getting him back for the playoffs.

Taryn,
Sadly you are likely right! Usually they need to see if the swelling goes down and they get a better idea about range of motion and how well the player can move. More often than not it does always seem to end up as surgery.

The 230 lb Najee Harris did exactly to Jaire as we keep saying AJ Dillon at 247 lbs needs to do to opposing defenses. We need to run AJ more during games.

This is the problem with undersized DBs. They don’t hold up. The front office has decided to cross their fingers and wish for a miracle but it won’t help. He’s done for the year.

Basically we'll be waiting another 3-4 weeks to learn Jaire's status. The Packers know with surgery his season is over either now or in a few weeks so they're taking a shot that the injury will heal without the surgery. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Thanks, Since '61

He got injured making a good , hard tackle.
Do we want our #1 cover guy making hits like that?

He’s young and has access to the best sports injury/therapy people. I think that he’ll be back, but I don’t think he’ll be launching kill shots any time soon. You can’t help the club from the tub and you have to tackle people without hurting yourself, and Alexander will (hopefully) learn , because we need him on the field. We can still win the division even if he misses a few weeks, but if he’s done for the year……..

Good point LH. This injury is exactly the reason why I posted during the preseason that I didn’t want Jaire playing inside or any where near the “star” position that had been discussed since Barry became our DC.

I don’t know if he was in the star position when this injury occurred but if so the Packers need to learn to keep Jaire on the outside and let him be their shutdown corner.

Hope he can return ASAP and no surgery. Thanks, Since ‘61

Generally speaking, I think if you try to blowup bigger guys, you’re going to have injuries

I think of Charles Woodson, who was an excellent tackler. I think of Tramon, who avoided those crushing hits and played for a decade. I think of guys like Shields and Collins and Tim Lewis. I mean, good cover guys who we lost way too early because of injuries.

I am wondering if maybe I should reconsider the approach to tackling for DBs. They’re the smallest guys on defense and they make quite a few tackles. Do we want them to resist the urge to hit hard? I mean , Jaire could have hit him less forcefully and just wrapped him up and then we’d still have him in the lineup. Which way are we better off?

Your question about DBs tackling is a tricky one. CBs covering a WR (similar size as the CB) who makes a catch in front of them need to be tackled solidly by the CB to prevent YAC. I think it then becomes difficult to expect the same CB to change how they tackle a larger RB.

As for the Safeties they need to be able to step up and tackle effectively in the run game. They are the last line of defense against both the run and the pass.

We both know that tackling has slipped across the league over the 10-15 seasons. Players are going to be injured no matter what. This is the NFL and injuries happen. To me the longer term answer for player safety is better equipment. Especially for helmets, shoulder pads and knees. Maybe even different equipment for players at certain positions. For example a OL or DL. rarely suffers a hit like Adams sustained in the SF game. Should skill players on both sides of the ball have better/different helmets? Should CBs have different shoulder pads for tackling opponents who they are giving away 20 - 50 pounds to? These are issues/questions that I have been bringing up for years? For me if the NFL is serious about player safety they will address improving the players' equipment. Thanks, Since '61

Jaire's injury must be a Grade 1 type or surgery would be needed without waiting.

Web site says full range recovery in 2-3 months. Maybe for a well trained athlete 4-6 weeks? Maybe 2 weeks after that to get in football shape? he is gonna be out 8 weeks. He comes back after the Bye for duh bares game in GB.

What they are really saying is they too know that Kevin King is an awful cornerback and we just pray that Jaire can recover..Or else we are doomed.

I read he had multiple medical evaluations and consensus was do nothing for two weeks, re assess and then decide surgery or not. I think they were saying season over if he has surgery.
Kind of mahes sense since were week 6 now, surgery week 9. Their will be nothing to come gack for. playofffs maybe?
