Packers Haven't Shown Many Signs for Optimism. . Yet

The Green Bay Packers are 1-1 this preseason and turned in two very different performances.  The opener at home wasn't perfect, but the team' s offense and defense showed some very positive signs.  This past week was a road game and the team that arrived in Baltimore didn't resemble the week prior at all.

One side says not to worry because it's preseason, starters aren't playing much and they're intentionally showing vanilla.  The other side says you play like you practice and the sloppy, inconsistent play is cause for concern.

The coaching staff aren't going to stand at the microphone and sound any type of siren at this point of the summer so we won't get any clarity from them.  They're also trying to establish their routines and norms.

No real games have been played and the quarterback hasn't taken a single snap yet.  He may not until the opener in Chicago.  The Packers are clearly a different team with him than without him.  But there is something to be said for the eyeball test and right now, the Packers aren't passing it.

Missed tackles have marred the defense but have been softened by the several takeaways they've produced.  And maybe it isn't such a bad thing if many tackles are missed if the defense is going to force multiple turnovers each game.  Even the top defenses can't always live and die by the takeaway every week.

Offensively, the backup quarterbacks have given us very little to cheer about and while yes, obviously there's a big drop off if Rodgers can't play, it's all but certain that none of the three currently in competition would be capable of winning many games while he's potentially out.

The run game is a key to the Matt LaFleur offense but we have yet to see Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in any significant action this preseason.  Dexter Williams runs well, but is still learning the pro game.  The team has rotated several backs through since camp opened up.  Yet another question mark.

Even special teams aren't immune to the many questions surrounding the Packers as both Mason Crosby and Sam Ficken continue to battle for the placekicker spot.  The team reportedly wanted to trade for Kaare Vedvik before the Minnesota Vikings swooped in and got him from Baltimore this past week.  It's anyone's guess who's kicking field goals when week one arrives.

There are still two more chances for this team to get some game reps and improve.  They may turn a corner, leaving the bad taste of last week's game behind or it might be more of what we saw against the Ravens.  More often than not, teams are what they show.

What will week three bring?

Jason, I am curious to see how the offense looks with A. Jones and J. Williams running the ball. D. Williams has potential but he is far from being an NFL caliber running back at this point. None of the other RBs has shown enough to warrant a roster spot, IMO. I think Gutey will need to scour the waiver list after the final cuts to find his 4th RB for the roster - yes, I do think they will carry 4 RBs and 1 FB since the offense wants to feature the run and injury concerns, especially with A. Jones are very real.

On defense I want to see the players acknowledge their awful tackling. If they have any pride in their work they should be asking for extra reps. Maybe some live tackling with the lower tier RBs, WRs and TEs is in order. It's actually embarrassing to watch the poor technique they have demonstrated so far.

And a missed tackle in a game that doesn’t count matters because...?

Let’s see what happens when it counts.

It matters because the players are facing competition. Whether the game counts or not does matter; but what also matters is if players can't tackle decently when it's an exhibition, what makes anyone believe they'll suddenly start tackling successfully when the games actually count? Either you can tackle effectively, or you can't. This is something that should be on display whether the game counts or not.

Revisit the judgement after week 4 regular season. By then you would hope the Packers have both knocked the rust off, and are beginning to execute LaFleur's Offense (and Pettine's defense).

In previous years it has sometimes taken that long (and even longer) for them to hit their stride. Of course I'm hoping it happens faster than that, but at least by then you have a chance to see what this squad really is.

The main factor in every season was the health of the position groups. Injuries are the giant X factor which always determines the fate of team. Out of those seasons only 20ll, 2014, the team was what I call football healthy. The last three seasons were ugly as all get out on the injury front.

1. Most of the missed tackles came from players who will soon not be on this roster. 2. As we all know, NFL teams do not round into football shape until the fourth to sixth game. Bottom line: Look out for six weeks of bad, really bad pro football when the 'real ' season starts. (Yuck)

Packers are ranked 32nd of 32 teams by PFF in their tackling grades. A score in the 60's is considered average to slightly above, while the 50's is slightly below average. The average for the league is in the high 50's to low 60's most years. The Packers, again are dead last with a piss poor score of 28 which is pretty pathetic. I see many people blaming the CBA but all the other teams must follow the CBA as well so that is no excuse. And although as a team they've missed 43 tackles in two games Ty Summers is responsible for just over 25% of them.

Since you named Summers at 25%. You must want to Cut him. On the depth chart he's behind Martinez. But yet Pettine kept moving him around. Is Crawford, Sheldon, your solution? Bolton is a Rookie, and not without faults. So why play Summers in Bolton's spot if he's that good? I believe they pushed Summers hard for a reason. He now must learn two spots. What concerns me the most, is are ILBs won't crash the hole in the wall. They have the speed but can't use it. When the OLBs keep pushing the wall, the space for the ILB just increases.

You're making up scenarios and connecting dots that don't exist. I never said anything about cutting Summers, although if he continues to miss tackles at a 40% rate it won't matter what you or I think. An ILB who can't tackle is just as useless as a receiver who can't catch. Stop letting your mind play tricks on you to see things that are not there. As for the second part of your comment you must not be watching Bolton or just outright refuse to accept what you see. He is very good at slipping blocks and has forced pressure on the QB in both games as well as made at least one tackle in the backfield by doing exactly what you've said none of the ILB's have done, and that is by crashing the gaps in the defense.

And Summers has officially missed 11 tackles in two games, so you yourself are saying he's useless. I don't need to defend Bolton as he's running with the ones and played both games against the other teams number one offense. His pressures in those games and tackles in the backfield, and Interception came against the first team and second team offense not the 3rd team offense. So no defense needed. And stop making up dumb ass comments like" Bolton is a rookie not without faults" as if Summers is a vet and doesn't have any himself. Or the other stupid one you made up where I supposedly want to cut Summers. And the dumbest one of all "So why play Summers in Bolton's spot if he's that good?" Where the f*#@ do think he's going to practice, he's an ILB, genius. If you can't speak facts and sense without making up stupid scenarios in your head that you want to be reality, then you need help my man, from a professional.

Rak47, I am leery of preseason stats in general. More so because of the CBA. With such a small sample size and a massive turnover in personal, it becomes next to impossible to see any trends coming league wide. Add what the Packers are going thru, with a complete rebuild in all football related areas, all we fans can really do is guess at the direction of the team. At this point, throwing dart at the wall would be just as accurate.

Fair assessment of where the Packers are right now. Even without taking into consideration some of their better players, the rest of the roster is being beaten head to head. LaFleur said that Baltimore was physical. They were. The Packers also committed a lot of errors in the form of penalties and missed tackles.

The team has a long way to go is probably the best way to summarize things right now. There's time, but they need to get their s--t together.

I still think we’re not as good as the Vikings or Bears. Third place in the division probably means less than 8 win.

The backup QB situation is on Gute, although he has plenty of people who think a rotational edge rusher is more important. And I suppose they’re right....until the starter gets hurt.

OS, yes the backup QB is on Gute, but I actually think he thinks Kizer's arrow is pointing up and there is still a much higher ceiling he is capable of reaching. He would argue our backup position is no worse than many other teams, Kizer is also very cheap.

As always, the Packers success this season, as with any NFL team, will be determined on how effectively Rodgers passes to his receivers. Does he play QB like the elite level he is paid to or does he play like just any other average NFL QB? He certainly has the receivers and TE’s to target this season but needs to make quicker decisions and deliver the ball accurately rather than holding on to the ball too much and risking injury once again. Yes, it’s going to be a very telling season in Green Bay.

The new coaching staff APPEARS to be focused and primed to have a productive year. I'd agree with you though, the players are paid to perform. It's preseason first off, so the Packers aren't as bad as they look in these games. Second off...it won't be a cakewalk to get to the playoffs. If this team can come together with their new playmakers on defense and the offense starts to click towards the end of the season, they could make some real noise.

Tony Romo, 2014. He played 7 regular season games with 2 transverse process fractures, and still managed to lead the league in completion percentage and passer rating, putting up a 133.7 rating in the month of December.

He also engineered a game-winning drive another year with a herniated disk.

I'm sure the Rodgers back tightness thing is just caution, but if he's already having back issues, it's likely he's going to have diminished practice reps the rest of the year and possibly the remainder of his career. If he can make the most of his practice time and still show up on game day, it doesn't matter, but he's at a point in his career where that's no longer a given.

There are depth concerns, and of course you can always bring up the weak link in the chain analogy. We do have some strong "links" as well, so i am hoping that will even the playing field somewhat when we open the regular season.
What I do see, in my limited knowledge of football fundamentals ( I coached in HS for 12 years) : It seems we play a lot of man to man in the secondary. This puts us in a lot of one on one tackling situations. We always preached that if your one on one, slow play the ball carrier, use the sideline if you can, and wait for help. I see a lot of diving at the feet of runners allowing big gains. Those are things they could work on with out having to go full contact.

Dexter has some maturing to do! I know his mom was to come to GB to try keeping him out of trouble.

He obviously is talented and probably the problem as he has always been a star at every level. However, I cannot get the vision of him trying to unnecessarily make a one handed catch in the flat out of my mind (and this is after he had repeatedly dropped passes in practice last week) when he did in game 2. Of course he dropped it! That moved smacked of a player more concerned with how he looks vs team play. I noticed Adam went up to him on sidelines and yelled something at Dexter afterwards.

That BS one handed attempt at catching the ball screamed to me arrogance and excessive confidence that is inhibiting his ability to perform and be the player the Packers want him to be. That is the impression I am starting to think from afar about him. Again he obviously has talent but can it be harnessed? A player like Dexter requires strict coaching and discipline. I am glad to hear LF yelled at Dexter at practice and made him go to the sidelines. Put his rear on the bench and keep it there until he listens and responds to coaching. Now that Jones and J. William's are back on the field he will quickly see he has a ways to go in order to play at their level and being a contributer.

Note: This is simply my observation and maybe I'm wrong. Others thoughts?

Some players don't have the skills or football IQ to translate college success to the pro game. Some don't have the temperament or discipline. Time will tell with D. Williams, but downhill runners are a dime a dozen - if they don't find a replacement now, they will come cut down day and can give him the easy, no-scheme "just take the handoff and run" type plays till he learns the blocking assignments and play language.

Well, Rodgers is already hurt, so we’ve failed at #1.

And Jones will be on IR by Thanksgiving if he gets 15+ touches, at least based on his first two years.

OS,
Do you think Gute should have tried to get a back up quarterback? :-)

For what it is worth....I dont think so!

However, I feel it imperative if Kizer doesnt show continued improvement that should a top QB in next years draft is staring Gute in the face he should pull the trigger in round 1. Rodgers is getting up there and injuries are pyling up. A talented rookie QB to sit and learn behind Rodgers for three years would be ideal.

I remember several years ago the Lions went 4-0 in the preseason. Over here in Michigan they were selling “Preseason Champions” t-shirts. They followed it up with yet another losing season.

The preseason is meaningless. I wish they would do away with it - perhaps go to more joint practices. Unfortunately the league would not make as much $$ so there is no way it’s going to happen.

Irish, you left out the best part. They not only followed up their 4-0 pre season with “yet another losing season” it was a Lions version of perfect....0-16. Yes, the 2008 Detroit Lions!

Of course, 1-1 in EXHIBITION games is cause for wailing and gnashing of teeth in these parts.

a missed tackle doesn't matter when it comes from a guy who won't be playing in the nfl after 2 weeks

giving someone a shot is entirely different than scheming to win

I just can't wait till week 6 when we are 4-2 maybe even 5-1 and all the negativity will stop. What am I thinking though, most of ya'll will find something to cry about. Why don't we enjoy what we have at the moment. There are a lot worse places and players/coaches we could be or have. I for one am extremely optimistic and plan on seeing a 10+ win season. If we don't, shoot if we go 0-16, as much as that would suck, I'm still going to be wearing my cheese head PROUDLY!!!

Agree sbransbottom. I think this Packers team will surprise the entire NFL this season.

Consider the influx of talent alone all up and down the roster over just two offseasons. Add in a 2 time MVP and SB winner in Rodgers at QB, with the entire tool shed at his disposal, combined with what I consider will be a very sure Top 10 defense, if not Top 5, and a dynamic new HC... one who will actually run the ball, saving Aaron from full on pass rush? Whoah.

I believe this is going to be a very special season for the Packers.

NFL Rankings have Packers picked at #15.

I think that's reasonable. Not too high and not too low.

I know power rankings don't mean anything. This could be a strange and crazy season.

I don't know what to expect.

Packers organization needs a complete overhaul. Mark Murphy and Russ Ball need to hit the road and please stop hiring these cheap coaches. The Special Teams still sucks and stop fooling yourselves thinking that this defense is going to be any better. The D Line still gets no sacks and for the dumb award of the decade -------Gute trading up to draft Savage when he could have just picked Savage first, saved the draft pick he stupidly lost, and grabbed Gary 29th. Nobody wanted him. Gary being potty trained now.
