Packers have reported interest in Everson Griffen

NFL Network reports there is mutual interest between the team and the former Vikings defensive end.

From NFL Network:

Is this most likely a leverage play by the agent to drive up Griffen's price with the Vikings? No doubt.

Should the Packers try to sign Griffen regardless?

Don't believe he's a good fit. Age 32. Troubled past while with the Viks.

Fully agree. If he was a 300 pound run stuffer maybe. It also means we're giving up on Gary.

It sounds like the salary cap may actually decrease this year due to china virus related issues. If that is the case, adding even moderate priced free agents may be difficult. Too bad, you can always use good defensive linemen. Injuries are unavoidable, depth wins championships.

I like him, but Clay MIII is still available. Same age. Damn near identical season last year and he missed 5 games with a broken jaw. Plus, no off field incidents. Hell, sign both of them. Cannot hurt.

Everson Griffin is a difference maker.......he would wreck people, I support it. Also he can rush inside. Having to block him and Z?? He would absolutely disrupt blocking schemes. I don't think he would just rush from the Edge, he could play some 5 tech too. Quite an upgrade over Dean Lowry...

At this point in his career he can play 5 to 7 tech.

Can he rush inside? I am asking, because I don't know. He has played DE in a 4-3 with Joseph and often a pretty good DT next to him. I don't think Lowry plays a lot of 5 Technique, he is mostly 3 with some 5 tech. Griffen is listed at 6-3, 273 pounds.

Griffen is good. It is good to grab difference makers. I've no idea how to pay him. I am unsure where he would play or even how much (well, he is too good not to get him onto the field a lot, so I am sure GB would find a way and a place). Cutting Lowry saves $1.7M in cap space as a post-June release, but pushes $3M dead into 2021.

Yeah he can, he has the get off. He was simply not asked to in a Minnesota. I mean we basically play a 2-4-5, I think the Packers were in base 3-4 less than 20% of snaps. Hell, he can play nose on a lot of sub packages in Dime. (Z played the nose in sub packages for those whom doubt me).

I don't see any way they could afford a decent contract for him. I'm guessing the interest is to drive up his price for Minn. If he was a legit 34 DL, maybe they would make it work. He's just to much of what they already have and they simply don't have the cap space to do it IMO. Bahktiari and Clark are going to be very difficult to get signed as it is.

I do think Grifin could rush from a DT spot, but Z and Gary should get those opportunities. Love to get him from Minn, but I don't see how they can do it.

Dead money in 2021 sounds like a bad idea with the way that years cap is stacking up.

The Packers need to re-create their defensive line. Only Kenny Clark is a legitimate DL starter. I would like to see Clark, Keke and Griffin vs. Clark and the assortment of busts, disappointments and bench players they fielded last year

I'm just loving the fact that the report is making Viking fans squirm. Even if it just drives the price up on them, that works for me too.

I dont think it's the most prudent use of resources though, considering our list of UFAs to be that need to be re-signed, not to mention the possibly of a shrinking cap the next few years.

Straight up though, it's silly to think that their interest in Griffen means they are giving up on Gary, sorry Pete, that is just not the case. Z and P played a lot of snaps last year and even with Gary taking on a much bigger load this year there are snaps to be had both inside and outside. Banking on Tim Williams and or rookie Johnathan Garvin or another unknown to fill those snaps probably isnt ideal, hence their interest in Griffen.

Love the way Gute is always shopping, trying to improve the talent level. When Ted was in charge it was always a one-way street from Green Bay to Minnesota. Make things interesting, and it’s always good to make Viking fans squirm a little!

To me the real issue is Spielman gets great use of someone then knows when its time to cut the cord, get picks for them or save cap space but he is the best dealer in football.
Ted T just let people go to save the bucks and got some doofus 7 round comp picks and Spielman get rebuild picks.
When havent the Vikes had top quality with speed at receiver and running back and linebackers? They keep reloading and never go away and thats the GM pulling the trigger.
