Packers Eddie Lacy One of Season’s Biggest Disappointments

The Green Bay Packers passing game has been in shambles for most of the season. Now the Packers running back situation has become muddled with more questions than answers challenging Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff.

Wanted:  One extra-large doghouse.  Must be able to house an overweight, fumble prone and undisciplined running back.  Contact Green Bay Packers ASAP.

It may not literally be quite that bad at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, but figuratively it is coming close.

With the afterglow of an amazing and perhaps season-saving victory at Detroit on Thursday night comes the reality that within the Green Bay Packers organization there is much work yet to be done.  The 6th ranked scoring defense (19.8 PPG) suffered a disappointing first quarter but came back strong enough to secure a victory.  The banged-up offense, and specifically Aaron Rodgers, did just enough to win.  But huge blemishes remain to be fixed and time is running out.

It isn’t enough that the Green Bay Packers passing game has been in shambles for most of the season. Now the Packers running back situation has become muddled and more questions than answers remain for Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff.

Eddie Lacy, who previously turned in two consecutive 100 yard rushing performances against the Bears and Lions, was not the starter on Thursday night.  James Starks once again assumed that role.  Multiple sources reported that Lacy and fellow running back Alonzo Harris missed a 9 PM curfew.  The fallout from their actions resulted in Harris being cut and fellow rookie and practice squad player John Crocket signed.  Lacy was initially benched and played only 19 total snaps resulting in dismal numbers – 5 attempts for 4 yards and one reception for -3 yards.

Surprisingly Crockett signed his contract only three hours before game time and played meaningful snaps.  He ran the ball 5 times for 22 yards – a 4.4 yards per attempt average. Crockett who was known as “The Taz” at North Dakota State (after the Tasmanian Devil due to his non-stop movement where he ran for 4,309 yards and 41 touchdowns) started the second half while playing in his first regular-season game.  Those around him spoke of his infectious energy.  The 6’ 217# Crocket provided a spark and enthusiasm that the Packers running game has been lacking most of this season.

"I wouldn't necessarily say it was on me, but I'm emotional," Crockett was quoted after the game referring to the energy he brings. "I want to be energetic all the time. It's having that energy about myself, hopefully that helps guys out a little bit."

That brings us back to Lacy who at the present time seems to embody the opposite demeanor from Crocket.

The Packers cut Harris but have too much invested in Lacy who has demonstrated in the past that he can be productive.  So what has happened to Lacy, a former offensive rookie of the year in 2013, and what can be done to get him back on track?

It may be too late to do anything meaningful this season, but it certainly appears that Lacy is much larger than his listed 234 lbs. He may be carrying too much weight to be productive for more than just occasional spurts.  Rumors persist that Lacy tips the scales at +250.  It doesn’t help that Lacy suffers from asthma which can be a huge obstacle to overcome for an athlete who may not be in top physical shape.

Ankle and groin issues have also lingered and contributed to a lack of production that may or may not be weight related.

His running style this season also seems to have changed.  Lacy is running more upright and lacking that plant-and cut style he was known for in college and his first two seasons in Green Bay. Also his patented spin-move was almost totally missing until brief displays during the Lions and Bears games.  Those are things that can be corrected with coaching yet this season.

Punctuated by his curfew violation are lingering reports that his pre-game preparation is lacking and contributing to a sloppy running style and poor ball security.  All very troubling aspects for a coaching staff that desperately needs Lacy to spark the running game.

Perhaps looking for an alternative plan should Lacy fail to improve, the Packers worked out former standout Wisconsin running back Montee Ball on Friday. Ball was chosen number 58 by the Denver Broncos in the 2013 NFL draft, three spots ahead of Lacy. He saw action in 16 games his rookie year and averaged an impressive 4.7 yards per carry (120 attempts for 559 yards), but he slipped noticeably in 2014 and was released Sept. 6 of this year.  Surprisingly the young running back has failed to draw significant interest from any NFL team.  He was not immediately signed by the Packers.

Eddie Lacy is is regarded by most to be a 'good guy'.  Quiet and humble he is not known to be a trouble-maker.  Yet something is wrong  with Lacy this year and most of his issues will have to rest upon his own broad shoulders.

Redemption for Eddie Lacy will have to come swiftly.  Only four games remain in the regular season.  If there is to be a post-season run for the Green Bay Packers their offense will have to perform significantly better.  There may be no easy fixes but finding solutions to Lacy's woes is a must.  His leash will be shortened but not the expectations.

Hard work and a total re-commitment to his craft would be a solid start.  If not, that extra large dog house may be getting a lot more use.

Huge caveat up front: I was ecstatic with the win on Thursday, and watching the Vikes get toasted today is pretty fun too. I want the Packers to win the Super Bowl. Every single year.

That said, Lacy is FAT by what is even borderline athletic standards for his position. Dude just likes southern cooking too much. For the rest of his career, he needs to be told by TT and MM that he will report to training camp and weekly weigh ins at no higher than 15% body fat or his pay checks will be docked substantially on a weekly basis. For the rest of his career.

Unfortunately, Lacy and the offensive line are also the only hope this team has of making a run in the playoffs this year too. Regardless of how good AR is, the WRs on this roster are terrible. Perhaps the worst in the league - but at least bottom 1/3rd. Cobb has proven that he is NOT a WR1. Adams is either not ready, hurt, or not a WR2. Janis isn't ready. Abby is made of glass. Montgomery can't get on the field. And don't even get me started on the TEs.

ARod can't do it by himself.

Lacy is, literally, the ONLY offensive weapon on the team that opposing defenses have to account for.

The sad thing is that this is perhaps the best defense GB has had since 2010. If the offense were AT ALL "normal" for this franchise since 1992, this is THE super bowl favorite team.

As it stands, I'm just hoping to win the division and the 3rd seed. But unless something crazy happens, this team is not getting past the NFC divisional round.

Yes. I did. Seattle looked great. Minny looked awful. GB will likely see neither team as either the 5 seed. They'd see Minny probably as a 3 seed.

Their likely playoff opponents are

(5/6 seed)
NFCE winner in round 1.
Either Carolina if SEA is 6 seed or AZ if Seattle is 5 seed.

(3 seed)
Possibly Seattle. More likely Minny. GB beats Minny.
AZ in round 2.

Really, your thread makes no sense. Sure, Seattle looked great, but Minny looked terrible IN THE SAME GAME. So why are you afraid of the Packers seeing EITHER team in the playoffs.

Personally, I don't think Minny even makes it if the field wasn't so bad this year. They only win when AP is running well, and the Packers handled him quite well in the last meeting. And AP is not a guy who gets better in the cold and mud. So what's your argument for fearing the Vikings?

And really, I only fear Seattle in Seattle. So I'd much rather be the 3 seed and having Seattle come to me than being a WC and risk having to travel there if the two WCs were to eventually meet. So your whole argument that the Packers are better off as the WC than the 3 seed makes no sense.

I'm not taking sides here, but I believe Cow is right on this one. I was going to post the same thing. Forget about todays Minn game. I do not want to face Minn in the playoffs.

I disagree with playing Seattle. If we are healthy, I'd rather play them the 1st game. That would be almost a sure win for GB. LVT

A little early to say, but the #5 speed might be easier than the #3. I've seen this argument on other sites made many times by undeniable packer fans.

I tend to agree with Bearmeat that the only real hope is for the OL to get healthy and look like last year. I do think a healthy Abby and Montgomery might be enough with a healthy OL. Starks and Crockett might be enough if Lacy can't find the field, but I definitely would prefer a productive Lacy, in part due to his blitz pick up and receiving abilities.

That's interesting, because I think the opposite is true.

Seattle looks to be heating up. Minnesota looks to be fading. They've lost two of their last 3, with the win being against the free-falling Falcons.

Seattle's only loss in their last 6 was 39-32 to the Cardinals, who are leading the West division. The only really tough opponent left for them is the Cardinals the last game of the season. They may likely win out. If the Packers go 2-2, they could end up back in Seattle for the playoffs.

But it's a moot point. I'll have to see how the Vikings do Thursday against the Cardinals and the rest of the season plays out before worrying about the playoffs

You got that right. These morns wanting the Vikes to lose that game, don't know football. Sea steamrolled the SteaLers. I wanted the bikes to win, ya they stay in first but put a dagger in Seattle. We play the bikes here n the winter so we could have taken it back. Right now Seattle is the best team in the NFC. Panthers are pussy n defense.

I think too many injuries all aroud are keeping the offence as a whole from gelling. Its not an excuse just an observation. Just about every position has been affected by injury to the point where the offense can't run the way we wa expect it too.

ray, You said it right. If this offence gets healthy, & that means Bulaga among others, it's a whole different offence. Throw the Chicago game out. The weather was an equalizer. We beat a Hot, & pretty good Detroit team with our 2ond & 3rd string. That's why I've been telling fans not to judge this team as they are today. I'm optimistic GB will be healthy for the playoffs. If they don't, well then there's not much you can do. For now, you said it the way it is.LVT

I think at this stage of the season, the injuries on Offence are the greatest reason the Packers' offence will not improve this season - not enough time left to heal.

I'm glad you think that and don't know it. Nobody has a crystal ball that works. You don't have to be a homer to be positive. I'm still wondering how the packers offence is doing. I can't even find offence on the stat sheet. I'm not even sure what the offence does. Are they the guys that keep the opposing teams offense from doing the lambeau leap?

Starks is a FA after this year and the Packers won't sign a 30 yr old RB. So Lacy is going to be back next year, Crockett looks like another RB. Packers would probably still want another RB to fill out the roster. Montee doesn't need to be the answer, but maybe he can come in next year and be a nice role player.

I didn't make an "assessment" of anyone. Since he was on the PS and promoted to the game day roster in his rookie season, it makes sense the Packers will bring Crockett back next year for at least training camp(I didn't say he would make the roster next year). Common sense goes a long ways! Try working on that.

That's nuts. "Busts" don't have back to back 1,100 yard rushing seasons with 10 TDs each year. "Busts" aren't rookies of the year as a 2nd round pick. Lacy needs to lose weight, get north and south and stop fumbling, yes. But he's not a "bust."

Lay off the sauce.

Yeah you can be a bust after three seasons. But Trent Richardson was the 5th overall pick. And he was NEVER good. Lacy was quite good in 2013 and better down the stretch last year. He has not been good this year.

That's not even close to the definition of a bust.

the problem is not manifestly not the running game, but slow wide receivers, or in the rare case they get open having no hands. it is not just on the receivers though but as has been pointed up a zillion times the absolutely predictable route designs. it did not matter that they were slow when AR was playing at godlike levels and would put the ball into tiny tunnels that managed to connect with covered guys. but AR ain't doing that as often this year. again as has been pointed out there are ways to beat press coverage but do you see mac or clements making the adjustments? as for the running game. well that sure as hell ain't great. but often the holes are not the there, some guy goes unblocked, or lacy or starks does not see the hole. look, face it, we are a fairly mediocre team, the hope being that in fact the NFL has parity, 80 percent of the teams are less than mediocre. why are games easier to turn off than they used to when you are not watching the packers? the stupid ass refs taking over the game, the endless replays and referee conferences... the game has gone south to play less to true football fans than to play to the fantasy crowd

Lacey's been injured and has fumbled too much, but he's successful if you give him 15-20 carries a game. Adrian Peterson fumbles, he is averaging 20 carries a game and has 5 fumbles so far this season. Lacy is averaging 11.5 attempts per game with 3 fumbles. James Starks is averaging just under 10 attempts per game with 2 fumbles. Starks is very lucky yhat Cabb secured his fumble into the end zone for a t.d. I don't see Starks anywhere near a doghouse. My point is that running backs are gonna lose the ball and quarterbacks are gonna throw interceptions.

It's interesting that the Homers here will so easily and gladly dismiss a player going through a rough season. 5 days ago I saw "Aaron Rodgers" should be benched, "Rich Rodgers is too soft and slow", "Davante Adams can't catch". And the sky is falling. Successful teams have heart and make big plays when it counts. Hail Mary anyone?

Lacy's fumbles are only a small part of the reason he's in the doghouse. Breaking curfew, not being professional about your pregame preparation and weight (related to pregame prep) are far and away the biggest reason's he's in the doghouse.

I have to believe that Montgomery will be huge in our offense assuming he can come back. To me he is the x factor in our offense. He is the guy that can give our offense a major lift.

Quarless while might not be a top TE in the league, he will be a huge upgrade over Perillo. He is a guy that can definitely help our offense.

If we can get these guys back in the next few games they could make our offense start reaching its potential right at the time we want it to. In the playoffs.

I don't think having another slot WR is going to be such a huge lift, seeing as we already have Cobb and Abbrederis. I think he can definitely help the team tho.

Quarless IMO is the one who could concievably really help alot. He is faster and nearly as athletic as Finley was. He could be a real upgrade at TE over R. Rodgers. He might be able to be a seam threat the D has to respect a little. For as good a game as R. Rodgers had, he still didn't break any tackles or get significant yd after catch. Quarless should last year he can be like that to some degree. Moreso than R. Rodgers.

Might be a little wishful thinking, but I think Quarless is the one who could do more for the offense than Montgomery.

See that is where I am seeing it differently. I don't view Montgomery as just a Slot WR. Yeah, he is good there and might be his most natural position, but they can use him in so many different ways. His ability to be used every where is what sets him apart. His ability to be used as a RB is the part I am looking forward to the most.
The other thing with Montgomery is with him on the field it opens up the playbook more and brings out the creativity in the offense.

Quarless will really help. I just think that the creativity that Montgomery brings will open the offense up more.

Quarless and Rodgers I think will make a nice 1-2 punch at TE.

Either way, both players should help out. If we can get them going before the playoffs, we might start seeing our offense rolling again at the perfect time.

I agreee they can use Montgomery anywhere, but they had that w/ Cobb last year and did that really make some sort of huge difference? Not really. It was a nice diversion that gave the D a little something to consider, but it wasn't ever a game changing move. Why would you now expect that Montgomery is going to be such a huge lift when Cobb wasn't? BTW I was the guy who in the PreSeason said Montgomery would take over Cobbs backfield duties, while everyone bitched at me that it would never happpen.

Quarless is much more talented than Rodgers at TE. And while they are a nice 1-2 TE combo, Quarless is far and away more athletic, gets more yds after catch, breaks some tackles and might be able to get up the seam to some degree.

Really just having more weapons available to put on the field is what might make the biggest difference. More options and maybe more matchups that favor the Packers.

' BTW I was the guy who in the PreSeason said Montgomery would take over Cobbs backfield duties, while everyone bitched at me that it would never happpen.'

I don't know if you remember but I have been high on Montgomery since they drafted him. A few of us have been.

The difference between Cobb and Montgomery is that Montgomery is more of an actual rushing threat then Cobb. He is bigger and can run the ball more. Cobb was very effective in that role last year, but the problem was they didn't really have another threat in the slot last year. With Montgomery coming in, they still have that threat in the slot. One major reason why Montgomery playing out of the backfield will help the offense is because now when Cobb goes into the backfield defenses really are only concerned with him. There hasn't been another threat on the outside. When Montgomery goes into the backfield they will still have to account for Cobb.
I think the offense will be a lot more versatile when Montgomery comes back. Hopefully sooner then later.

Yeah, no doubt Quarless is more athletic. The one thing in the Detroit game that really flashed and got the offense rolling was using Rodgers in the middle of the field. Attacking that seam and middle of the defense really helped our offense out. Quarless will definitely help there, but I think those TE bubble screens is where he will be the bigger upgrade over Rodgers. Quarless being more athletic will be able to break more tackles and get up field faster.

'Really just having more weapons available to put on the field is what might make the biggest difference. More options and maybe more matchups that favor the Packers.'

That is the biggest thing. The more weapons they have on the offense the better. Get Quarless and Montgomery back will definitely help the offense. Hopefully they have found a new gem in Crockett.

Grasping at straws. You have no idea how much or if a D will actually considered a weapon they have to account for. Look I like Montgomery alot too, but your just way overestimating the impact he will make, especially out of the backfield. He made a couple nice plays earlier in the season and he will hopefully make a few more. Rodgers didn't attack the seam at all. He made a couple nice catches on crossing patterns, but he didn't go vertical, unless you count the Hail Mary.

Packers , Cards and Vikings all rated close as far as defense , I'm not expecting a Super Bowl run but young players show promise and would love a playmaking tight end next year , hard to say if R Rodgers can be that guy , maybe he is only time will tell . Maybe Ryan and Barrington allow Clay to rush off the edge more , let's just let the season play out. I'm not giving up on the receivers yet .

Watched the Patriot Eagles game. Brady threw 2 picks and was totally out of sync with his receivers. What a shock hey. Brady would be no better or worse than Rodgers with this receiving corp. The friggin Eagles? Really?

Take the #1 receiver off any group and the rest are going to suffer. Gronk is to NE, what Jordy is to GB passing game. He makes all the rest of the receivers better, draws the coverage and allows better matchups on down the chart.

Tried to tell everyone, Cobb is a terrific slot WR and #2, but not a #1, too bad nobody wanted to hear it and kep saying Cobb is a clear #1 WR.

Sounds like a lot of rumor mongering and guilty before proven innocent in Lacy's case. I guess due process isn't part of the NFL fan's constitution. The jury is still out and lets wait for the facts to come in 1st. This is a team problem and the team has to deal with it. All I know is he out played the child beater in minny and looked great. Watch the 27 yard run and reaction after it. Dorsey Levens talked about getting his bell rung many times a game. He was told its actually a mild concussion when getting your bell rung. Lacy's running style means dropping your head and smash mouthed running. Maybe he's already taken to many head shots, IDK?

GB gave Alonzo Harris due process. As DT said, he committed an infraction while in Packernation and got deported.

As for Lacy, my eyesight is fine and he is fat. Verdict: guilty (unless the unlikely occurred and the GB staff told him he'd be better off on the field if he were fatter). The injury is not an excuse to be fat, and he came into camp looking pretty plump.

Curfew deal is an open issue - it matters whether Lacy got in a few minutes after the 9:00 p.m. curfew because he was visiting sick kids in the hospital or if he got in after bar time after a night on the town. Verdict: mostly inconclusive but he should be back on time, so mild negative.

Work Ethic/love of the game: Insufficient evidence. I see that Lacy worked hard to improve his blitz pick up and receiving skills, both of which are very good. Only evidence I know of is in his favor, though there were rumors from scouts when he was drafted that he did not love football. Verdict: wait for more facts.

Bingo! It was well documented Lacy didn't "Love" the game or view it as the most important thing in life. I recall reading a few write ups on Lacy prior to and after the draft about just that. You can't make someone love something we all know that. but could you imagine how good Lacy could be if he did what Le'veon Bell did and lose about 15 pounds or in Eddie case if weights are correct 25 pounds. Bell came back last year so much quicker and faster after losing 15 pounds before his 2nd season. Wish Eddie would decide to do that, he could carry a team.

My concern is concussion issues. He may just decide it's not worth it. Hell, I know he needs to shed a few pounds. Not one of you commented on the viqueen game. He looked like he loved football that day. Remember Borland, he packed it in after one season, saying it's not worth it. MM has been keeping his carries down since he got here.

"It certainly appears" Lacy is much larger. "Rumors persist" that he's +250.

Everyone is going to have some serious egg on their faces when some (gasp) facts come out of 1265 and it turns out something totally different was occurring. Just speculating.

Thanks Nick!! It was super exciting!! Now we face former coach Willie Taggart in Miami Dec. 21.

When I graduated in '83 no one would or could have dreamed of something like this. We were a basketball school, 11 years removed from a Final Four appearance.

QB Brandon Doughty - 1st player to have two 4,000+ yards and 40+ TDs in two seasons. He'll be on a roster next year along with TE Tyler Higbee.
