Packers claim LB/DE Markus Jones off waivers from Ravens

The team made room on the roster by waiving CB Javien Hamilton

The Packers have claimed Markus Jones off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.

He will take the place of CB Javien Hamilton, who was waived/injured with a hamstring issue.

The 6' 3", 252 lb Jones was an undrafted free agent out of Angelo State.

Looks like a possible prospect, decent height, weight, speed, about the exact same size as Clay Mathews. Hope they can get the best/most out of him.

The UDFA that they gave the biggest guarantee to, Roberts, is on the PUP and Donnerson is down. Probably needed some numbers there.

The following is from hogsheaven.com:

School: Angelo State University | Conference: Lone Star Conference
College Experience: Senior | Age: 23
Height / Weight: 6’2” / 252 lbs
Projected Draft Status: 5th to 7th Round

Jones led the nation - all divisions - in tackles for loss with 34.5. A leader in sacks and forced fumbles (he even blocked two kicks) ... Jones’ quickness, tenacity, and relentlessness is evident. Although the level of competition is questionable, Jones accepted an invitation to the East West Shrine game and held his own. He had a good week of practice that translated to six tackles, a half sack, and two QB hurries. Jones has a lot of potential that could be unlocked.

Strengths
Although he played DE, has good size to play OLB in a 3-4.
Relentless motor. Always working to defeat blockers and chase plays until the whistle.
Quick off the line and gets to top speed quickly. Shows speed around the edge and flattens to QB easily
Shock blockers, stacks and sheds linemen and bull rushes tackles with good strength.
Impact player on special teams.

Weaknesses
Arm length only 32”. This allowed blockers to get their hands on his chest and slow his rush. Will have trouble keeping blockers off him unless hand usage improves.
Can be undisciplined and out of control on rushes. Needs to put together pass rush moves and have a plan when rushing.
Limited tape does [not?] show if he can drop and cover as an OLB or set the edge against the run.
Level of competition in Division II. Can he be as good against better competition?

I like the part about being "relentless."

I love the idea of "Churning the bottom of the roster"

Another Jones!?
The Pack have: A. Jones, J. Jones, & M. Jones.
Interestingly, they also have:
T., J., L., & D. Williams
D. & M. Adams
T. & F. Brown, & E. St. Brown
Z. & P. Smith
They have a Boyle & a Coyle
And they have a Jamerson, Jackson, Carson, Madison, Allison, a Donnerson

Almost feels like a TT pick up... finding obscure players ..Ie; F.Zambo , the RB's Harris & Gado .. etc etc TT did a patch work job during our last SB win. Players kept going down and TT would find players everywhere ..even Car Dealerships..Even Ryan Grant deep and forgotten in the Giants Practice squad..

Gute keeps chucking and churning the bottom of the roster. Good way to prevent complacency and hopefully find a gem or two to contribute to the team. Go Gute Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Another T-Rex. Short arms but ferocious! I like the fact that the team leaves no stone unturned. Get rid of the old fossils and find something unexpected.

Defensive scheme is similar and he just might need a change of scenery. Milt Hendrickson would have clear deep knowledge of him too. Gutekunst is always improving the roster. That message says a lot to the players. Play at a high level, we are always watching.

He's only been with the Ravens since May. Hendrickson came over in January.

If my counting is close to correct, we have room for a guy like this.

Lowry, Gary, Smith, Smith, Fackrell. That's five guys we'd want on the field, healthy, so they're all gameday guys.

Add in Martinez, Clark, and Lancaster and we're up to 8 guys. We should probably have about 12 active on gameday, one more on the 53, and at least one more on the PS. By my count, that's 13 before we're full.

After the first 8, Burks is a good bet. Montravious Adams. That puts as us at 10. Still room for 3 more.

Fadol? Keke? Mr. Jones?

I can dig this. Hustle. My favorite line from that is "Jones led the nation - all divisions - in tackles for loss with 34.5." That's hustle. This dude will have a chance to crack the final 53.

Anyone remember the Ravens cut him?

I understand they have a very good D, but he was cut pretty early.

My guess is Ravens are bring in a new guy, and he was the guy they let go

Jones was cut so they could sign Joe Callahan. Understand him being bottom of roster and all, but, that is some crazy potential they let go. Markus Jones has gifts for getting to a QB.
