The Packers agreed Monday to deal quarterback Aaron Rodgers and their 2023 first round pick (No. 15 overall) and a 2023 fifth-round pick (No. 170) to the Jets for New York's 2023 first-round pick (No. 13 overall), a 2023 second round pick (No. 42), a 2023 sixth-round pick (No. 207) and a conditional 2024 second-ro0und pick that becomes a first if Rodgers plays 65% of the plays this season, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

Yes! And a slightly better deal than I hoped for and decent compensation for a 39 year old HOF player. I will miss his talent but it was time to build for the future.
Best wishes for a bright future to Jordan Love and Go Pack Go!

Two years in a row where the Packers have only one suitor (Adams, Rodgers) and could get really hosed, but do just fine.

This will finally put that contract into perspective. Perhaps, maybe, it's going to end up not being a horrible price for #43 and next year's pick in the 20s. I'll wait until I know.
My understanding is that right now, we'd be looking at a $40 million hole that we could split into two seasons at 16/24.

Dear Al,
The down vote could be a system error.
I have found that when I wish to give a thumbs up to certain members' posts, instead the thumbs down count increases by 2!!
I have also found that when I wish to give a thumbs down to certain members' posts, the thumbs down count decreases by 2!!
This only happens with a couple different members posts, don't know why.
Anyone else have that experience?
Al, or the thumbs down vote could be someone that recognized that you got it wrong as to any positive salary cap effect for the Packers of the Jets renegotiation with Aaron regarding his contract - as you misunderstood Rapoport and Pelissero's reporting on the still NOT OFFICIAL, still NOT FINALIZED trade (If you have time, please listen to Brian Gutekunst's 29 minute and 27 second interview on Monday afternoon, April 24, 2023 on the Official Packers website).
Rapoport and Pelessero's reporting on the STILL NOT FINALIZED Rodgers trade could be heard here:
Rapoport, Pelissero: Jets agree to trade to acquire Aaron Rodgers
NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero reports the New York Jets agree to trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Al, please listen from 51 seconds through 1 minute of the 2 minute and 45 second clip:
Ian Rapoport: "...lot of details to get to including the fact that the New York Jets are expected to redo the contract of Aaron Rodgers to give them some more cap space....."
Al, the bonus payments made by the Packers in 2022 and earlier years are sunk costs in accounting terminology and must be amortized as salary cap usage by the Packers. Those past payments have nothing to do with the Jets.
Any salary cap benefit from renegotiation of future/pending contractual payments - i.e. Aaron agreeing to a lowering of the pending $58.3 million option for the 2025 year of Aaron's 4 year contract, which currently must be exercised by the day before the September 2023 season start by either the Jets (if the trade is finalized) or Packers (if the trade is not completed) - of the contract would go to the Jets if the trade is completed not the Packers.
For those that have listened to all of Aaron's interviews from the January 8th, 2023 Lions post game interview to those in the following weeks, we all heard Aaron say in interviews that he recognized the need to renegotiate and restructure his contract the Packers and Aaron said he was willing to do so to benefit the Packers with Aaron playing at QB, should he decided not to retire after taking a couple months away. Brian in interviews in January and right up through the Combine on March 6, 2023 was on board with Aaron taking the necessary time to rest and think through this decision to retire or to play. Brian suddenly OVER A 2 WEEK PERIOD COMPLETELY changed course - my fellow Packer fans and I - fans of 60 to 80 years have all listened together to these Brian (December 5h, January 13th, February 28th) and Aaron interviews (January 8th,2023, McAfee interviews) from December through March 6th.
In fact, as it stands now, if Aaron plays for the Packers in 2023, his salary cap hit is approximately $31.6 M composed of 4 components, $7.7 M proration of signing bonuses paid before 2022, $1.165M minimum veteran salary, $8.2M amortization of the $40.8 signing bonus paid to Aaron in 2022, and the $14.6 M amortization of the $58.3 M option for Aaron's 2025 contract year which would have to be exercised by the Packers a day before the start of the September 2023 regular season - approximately $31.6 M in total.
If the Packers complete this trade before June 2, 2023 the Packers salary cap hit is $40.3 M, approximately $9M higher than Rodgers the $31.6M salary cap hit when Aaron plays for the Packers in 2023 The $40.3 M cap this is made up of the $7.7 M proration of the signing bonus paid pre 2022 and the remaining unamortized $32.6 of the $40.8 signing bonus paid to Aaron in 2022 and is now amortized fully in 2023.
If the Packers trade was completed on June 2nd, 2023 or thereafter then only the $7.7 M proration of the signing bonus paid pre 2022 is still in the 2023 cap calculation along with approximately $8.2 M (rounded) of the unamortized portion of the $40.8 M signing bonus paid in 2022 for a total 2023 salary cap hit of $15.9M. .
This is not rocket since, just basic mathematics and access to the publicly available contract information for these players - how often is it that fellow employees (and the world) know how much each other is being paid in salary and bonus?
The Packers could have held onto Rodgers to start or as backup insurance for Jordan Love, should Jordan's performance very quickly - less than 7 games - show Packer Management and any knowledgeable football fan that Jordan clearly is not the Packer Franchise QB of the present or future or any other team's present or future Franchise QB.
In the best case, Love performs as well as Rodgers did in 2008, the Packers could save the $9M in cap space for 2022, $31.6 cap hit vs. $40.3 cap hit as noted, and trade Rodgers anytime after the approximate March 13, 2024 opening of the 2024 NFL year and the first September 2024 regular season game. The incremental cost here would be the remaining approximate unamortized $43.5 M salary cap hit from the $58.3 M the Packers would have had to make before the 1st regular season September 2023 game.
In the worst case, Jordan's failure, Rodgers could have remained as the Packers franchise and starting QB until the Packers drafted a TRUE FRANCHISE QB (i.e. Mahomes, Burrow - who dominated Jordan in the LSU Utah State game in October 2019- Herbert, Allen, Jackson, Hurts, Fields, Murray, etc. etc. - or otherwise traded for another veteran while continuing its search for TRUE FRANCHISE QB.
Maybe the Aaron Rodgers proposed trade will be reported as FINALIZED by Brian and on the Packers OFFICIAL website by Tuesday, April 25th or maybe Wednesday April 26th or Thursday April 27th or Friday April 28th or Saturday April 29th or maybe before September 2023 or maybe it may not happen at all.
The only thing OFFICIAL at this moment is that as Brian told the reporters Monday afternoon no trade has been completed::
Brian Gutekunst expects Aaron Rodgers trade to be completed before draft
Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst spoke with the media prior to the start of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Interviewer: "When did the trade happen?"
Brian: "The trade is not finalized yet. We were expecting it to be done very quickly, hopefully soon. A lot of things have been agreed upon, but there are things to go through."
Interviewer: "How much did things accelerate in the last 24 to 48 hours? Did things pick up this week?
Brian: "Not really, I would say in the last 5, 6, 7 days we been talking. We been talking you know much longer than that but I think the last 5 or 6 days over the weekend and stuff there has been a lot of conversation that helped us get to this point, but again there is still things that need to be done, IT IS NOT FINALIZED BUT WE DO EXPECT IT TO BE DONE IN THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS."
Interviewer: "Is it just paperwork at this time, at this point?"
(STR Note: What an IGNORANT QUESTION - all business deals are on paper or they ARE NOT DEALS AT ALL. NOTHING. ZERO. )
Brian: "Mostly yeah, BUT THOSE ARE SIGNIFICANT, so we're not there yet, but again were expected to have this done before the draft."
Interviewer: "Brian, how important was it to get this done before Friday?"
Brian: "It was very important for us, I think you know it wouldn't have been the end of the world but at the same time I think it would have certainly changed things quite a bit, so getting it done ahead of time is important."
Interviewer: "Why?"
Brian: "I just think certainly the capital for this year you know was very important, certainly more valuable than future stuff, so for our football team. So there was a number of reasons, but that's why."
(STR'S note - yeah BIG DEAL a 2nd round draft choice for the winner or the Passer Rating title and MVP 2 of the last 3 years is SO CRITICAL. WHAT AN EMBARRASMENT. Brian should be ASHAMED at how he continues to destroy the Packers)
Interviewer: "I believe at the Owners meetings we talked about the 13th pick and you said it is not like a must have. How did that swap become involved in it. Was that something that they ."
Brian (interrupting): "Yeah, Rob at some point because I know I am going to be talking a lot over the next 5 of 6 days I could go into some of that, BUT NOTHING HAS REALLY BEEN FINALIZED YET, so until it does just bare with me, I'll go through that stuff with you at a later date, but right now we're still ironing some things out, but I appreciate the question."
(STR NOTE: PREMATURELY celebrating Aaron Rodgers haters, Spoiled Packer Fans, Sycophants of Paid Packer Management propagandists, and Aaron Rodgers Church Lady haters addicted to Aaron Rodger's personal life rumors , Brian is telling you that even the BASIC TERMS OF THE TRADE ITSELF - like what, if any draft choice switches there are and what draft choices the Packers are giving and receiving - have not been agreed upon. AGAIN, there is NO DEAL until it is on paper and signed off on by all authorized or required parties, including Rodgers.)
Interviewer: "How important was it for you to limit some of the conditions on the pick the Jets would include for next year as much as possible"
Brian: "Yeah, I am going to echo that again before I get into any of those kind of things we're going to pause there and we will pick it up at the other times I got to talk. (joking looking to his right) I got to talk again right, yeah, ok, so"

I am impressed by the way you write and put down facts to support your thoughts. It is a shame that the uneducated masses prefer to hammer at your opinions out of emotion. But, I blame the ignorance of the school systems in rural Wisconsin. It is difficult going to school after milking the goats and fondling the chickens. Walking ten miles up hill both ways in a driving blizzard because your shetland pony got stolen only adds to the malaise. Oops. I forgot to mention having Oley and Lena for teachers. Ouffdah! Not me on the downvote, but Pelisero is completely wrong. Nothing can be done at this point that would help GB's salary cap. I see Ken Ingalls agrees that there is nothing to be done to help GB's cap. Now, they can help NY's cap.

As far as I can see, that’s just us not having to account for any of the 59 million in guarantees due this season if he’s on a roster. Perhaps that requires some classification tweaks. What’s already paid is fixed, so it sounds like they are just ensuring we don’t pick up amounts over the publicly anticipated 40 million hit.
To me the great thing is we now will lose the 40.7 million cap hit in 2024 and 59 million in 2025. So after this year Rodgers is off the books completely.

Moving up from #173 to #171 isn't a big deal, but at the top of the draft it's a big deal. Still, there's going to be two good players available at #13 that won't be there at #15.
We have picks at #13, #43, #45, and #78. A little bit of trading down would give us 5 or 6 picks in the top 78.

First......I am just damn glad AR is gone & the Jordan Love era has begun.
Second, while I wish we had also had gotten #43 to go with #42 I am content. It went down a little better than most on here was predicting. Now Gutey just has to hit some major home runs. I am leaning to wanting Gutey to trade down to #19, or even #29, or #32, and picking up another pick in round 2. Be nice to take three swings in round 2, and possibly an extra 3rd. There is a lot Gutey can do in this draft to help the team, but the draft has to fall in our favor.

Thrilled with this trade. The Jets TOTALLY caved. All 12 has to do is play 9 games and that 2nd becomes a 1st next year. So, if Love is bad (which I don’t think he will be) but if he is, they’ll have a top 8 pick next year and an extra 1st to move up to get the QB of the future in the top 3 in a much better QB class!
Rarescope
April 24, 2023 at 04:12 pm
I don't see it as either side caving, let alone TOTALLY caving (see Broncos trade for Russel Wilson 2022 for an example of TOTALLY caving). It looks like we shuffled a few picks around to create a little value this year while picking up a second rounder and added a 1st or 2nd rounder next year. Seems like a good deal without the risk of blowing up in everyone's faces like the Broncos did last year. Now if we get the Jets 1st next year and Rodgers retires it will look better for the Pack, but the Jets hardly gave away the farm. Seems good all around.

Niiiice!! Glad that it got done a few days before the draft. I wonder if all the 49er’s talk, etc. helped accelerate this on the Jets side. Who knows. Now having 3 picks in the first 2 rounds definitely works. And getting a potential 1st next year which may be a low pick, but a first rounder nevertheless. Giving Gutey a B+ at first glance on just the trade capital!!

What I want to know is, why the first round swap? Is it just pure ego so Gutey can claim he got a first and second rounder this year? Or does he have someone specific in mind for #13: that he wouldn't be able to get at 15?

The swap of the firsts is huge. If the player they had targeted was 50-50 at 15, the odds got much better. If it doesn’t play out as hoped, trading down is now that much more valuable.

Now the Pack needs to take the player the Jet's had wanted at #13. Be pretty damn funny! All signs point to that being Broderick Jones. I'd take Jones at #13 most likely over any other player even JSN, and Quentin Jones, or Van Ness, etc.

Great Job Gutey! The compensation was more than I was expecting. I agree Jim, trade down now unless a top 8 talent falls to #13. If a QB falls to #13, some team may get in a "trading mood". Even if it is only a 2-pick difference, that is still like a late 3rd round compensation value, BUT the most important thing that makes me giddy, is we now can look in the rear-view mirror as the Rodgers drama fads away. Also a much-needed money crunch lifted, still some to pay, but not nearly as bad as other possibilities could have occurred, like having Rodgers be a 50 million-dollar clip board holder for Love. I wish Rodgers well and thank him for his years of great times for the Packers. I just could not tolerate his selfishness any more. He failed as a team leader. He put himself above ALL on the Packer's team & management. It is OVER. Yippie! NOW the Packer's can build a " team". In Gutey we trust! Now go work your magic.

Again Packers MGT caves in and gives up a 4 time MVP Super bowl QB to the NY Jets for practically nothing. Last year the Bronco's offered the Packers 3 first round picks and a couple of defensive players. Packers MGT a day late and a dollar short. As a diehard hard Packer fan ( Shareholder ) since the late 60's nothing would make me happier then seeing Packer MGT get released. I hope the NY Jets win a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers. Hindsight is 20/20. Rodgers was coming off back to back MVP's. They thought they had the talent to make a run, but Rodgers played well below his standards. They moved up to #13 in this draft, and get an early 2nd rounder, and almost certainly a #1 next year, and also some cap relief I believe. That's a win for a guy who can still sling it, but has lost his mobility and underperformed in the last several playoff games.

A million more fans than you would have screamed to release management if they traded the team's best asset just after winning back-to-back MVPs. No GM would have done that, anywhere. No other GM has traded their franchise QB while at the top of his game. EVER. But hindsight is great, isn't it?

As a side note, but an important one:
Rodgers was at the top of his game in 2010-2014.
He's still a good QB, but he's not been that guy he was for almost 8 years now- fancy back to back MVP awards be damned.
That's just the reality of the situation. Don't believe me? Go back and watch Rodgers work the field back then. That's a different dude. Only been glimpses of that guy over the last decade.

1. Edge

About as good as could be expected. Personally I'd have liked 2-2's this season and a 2 next season, but I can see the want from Gute if things do not go well in 2023 that having 2-1s in 2024 is beneficial. I'm all about burning the 1-2 rounds for TE and WR first possibly with a move down from #13 to pick up another #2 pick. That would give us a later #1 and 3-2's to pick up 2-TE's and 2-WR's or 1-WR and RB like Gibbs who could play slot WR and excel. Anyway happy this looks like it's finally done. GPG

There is some truth there, but AR is still a top 5 QB and he will do well if healthy this season. He has some good weapons around him as well as a stout defense. OL may be a question mark though...which is very important for him to have a good one or good enough.
jurp
April 24, 2023 at 05:29 pm
His stats last year were middle of the pack - most definitely NOT top 5. We almost Hadl'd them here (I wanted BOTH of their second round picks).
PhantomII
April 24, 2023 at 08:25 pm
AR had no #1 not #2 WR last season. Watson and Doubs were hurt a part of the season. The OL was in flux especially early so there is that and a broken thumb.Stats or not still top 5 Mark it.
greengold
April 24, 2023 at 06:05 pm
Phantomll, they are not done.
As jurp said, we smoked ‘em. Getting a 2024 R2 (conditional R1), plus a swap of #s13/15, and the 2023 #42 was close to what I thought we’d take for AR alone. Maybe more.
How much are Myers, Runyan, Newman & Hanson worth to the Jets? That’s my next question.
Myers, a fully scheme trained veteran C is worth way more to them than the R2 we took him with, considering Nathaniel Hackett is running the show as OC. Runyan? Newman? Both of those players are starting caliber talents. *** Scheme trained is key for the Jets, increasing their value.
Jets owner Woody Johnson’s firm comments stating he wanted “plug & play” players sends this trade into historic blockbuster territory, if that’s what they aspire to receive from GB.
We all know AR, and he has very demanding expectations for his protection. That, coupled with Woody’s clearly stated mandates tells me Rodgers won’t be screwing around suffering rookie miscues.
The Packers remain in a great position of strength. They also have vested interest in keeping AR upright and healthy for that 65% of their season >>>> Bakhtiari post June 1.
Is it possible we get that #15 back?

WD
April 24, 2023 at 04:35 pm
Yippie! If Rodgers plays 65% of the offensive plays for the Jets in 23, the Pack gets a first round pick in 24. That is better than expected and a great Job by Gute. The first question now is what to do with the 13th pick. It has been a long time since the Pack has drafted that high and it is imperative we get a dynamic playmaker. Our critical needs are unchanged. Edge and TE. Can we get premier picks in both? I will leave that up to Gute. I think we get the best available Edge on the board There should be a couple or three there at 13. Then wait to see if we can get a TE like Darnell Washington or Kincaid by trading up if necessary. We had a great draft last year and I will not second guess the Gute. I will enjoy the draft!. I have the quarter Lb hotdogs , chips and beer for the three day annual festival. Go Pack. No doubt it was time. No one plays forever. We can debate the compensation. Personally, I feel Gute did ok.
I don’t think people realize that we are in for a very difficult transition. My guess is we are headed for a 4 or 5 win season. Love is going to have good days and bad. Turnovers will be a potential issue. Even forgetting Love, we have no safety and our pass rush is thin. Rashan Gary probably is going to start on IR is my guess.
Because of our salary cap problems Gute has done virtually nothing. That leaves the Draft. Reality says we cannot rely solely on draft picks to fill all the holes. Like who is the backup QB? What are we doing at WR, TE or DT? So many questions. Buckle up because we are headed to a place we haven’t been to for a long, long time. 2023 is a development year. A full rebuild has just started.
PhantomII
April 24, 2023 at 04:51 pm
Our team is ready to compete in the post season as is minus another quality WR and a couple TE's. That can easily be had now in this draft. Our OL is healthy (finally), defense is pretty good and ST is good and getting better a question mark at kicker though. We have a solid run game also. Watson and Doubs should improve, maybe Toure actually is thrown to and a couple 3-4 new offensive players to add to it. We should be pretty solid if Love does his job and doing these things in the draft will make it easier for him. #7 can play some Edge if Gary can't go right away. If we take care of the primary NEEDS at the top 2 rounds we will be better than you think. GPG

Hey PackfanNY!
It was not only time, but past time. I do think there is way more hope for a very good season in 2023.
Love is no longer a wide eyed rookie. He’s got 3 solid years of development in, and firmly established early, positive relationships with all the new WRs last year taking all the camp QB1 reps. Then furthering that with their own private workout Love invited Watson, Doubs, Aaron Jones and more to California for last month.
This staff appears to develop players well, and a ton of young talent could realize the fruits of that development.
I think you’ll see a far more dynamic, effective and fun Packers team in 2023.
Hang in there my friend.

I agree totally with the full rebuild comment.
I disagree with 4 or 5 wins if we come out reasonably healthy.
We'll be running an unscouted offense for the first 8 games, that should help.
Team unity will be noticeably better, which also helps.
Even if it's 4 or 5 wins, I'll be happy if coaching improves.

Yup. We're not supposed to say that though, NP. We're supposed to pretend that people haven't been lambasting Murphy, Gutekunst, and LaFleur.
Once Upon A Time, the Packers got a new GM and the triumvirate of Murphy, GM, and LaFleur started running the show. The star of the team was a two time MVP but he'd been hurt and feuding with his coach, and the Packers had missed the playoffs for two years in a row.
They extended Rodgers and got two more MVPs out of him. They also acquired and prepared his successor. And now, we're going to benefit in the next two drafts from a guy we don't need anymore.
People should stop throwing words around like "incompetent" and "inept" and "clown show" and "disaster". It's not warranted.

Murphy’s extension costs us 40 million this year in cap terms for s player who isn’t playing a year after that deal was signed. It’s right to not forget that we may have escaped the worst of it a year on, but not without getting hit.
We do know it’s 40 million. That’s bonus already paid but not counted against the cap. That’s set in stone. Any reworking is to ensure we aren’t liable for any of the 50 plus million that becomes guaranteed if he’s in a roster the first day of the season. That helps us next year, so 40 million this year and then we are done as I understand it.
White92

I would also say 8-9 and missing the playoffs is a disaster. This is Titletown. They now have no veteran WR, no TEs worth a shit at all, and a DC and head coach that are highly questionable.

Now do this.....
You want to impress me? Win.....without a HOF QB under center.
Ask the other teams who don't have one, it's not so easy. Hell, ask the Jets.
There is a good reason the Jets made this trade. A top 5 defense is one of them.
Gonna take more than a Rodgers trade for the Packers/fans to gloat.
Build a roster and win a SB like Ron and Ted did.

Thanks Nick!
I got so tired of everyone capitulating and parroting everything being said on the internet. That and dissing Gutey who has done a pretty damn good job since Day1! I think there will be some surprises on how quickly Gutey has us competitive again.

So, I guess Jordan Love will now own The Bears.
"Same as it ever was", as the old Talking Heads song said.

I remember when that song first hit the charts and was huge on MTV (did you know that MTV actually used to play music videos 24/7?)

First introduced to America altogether on Saturday Night Live!
I’ll never forget it. “Take Me to the River.” 1979.

Talking heads, the English beat, the clash, Bon Scott led ac/DC and XTC were always on my turntable in the late 70's. Throw in the specials, the early stray cats and roxy music and I'm set.
