Packers 40 Cowboys 40 Game Balls and Lame Calls

A wild shootout in Arlington leaves everyone with a sour taste in their mouths, as the Packers head into their bye.

Coach Paul Bryant once said that a tie football game is like kissing your sister... it just doesn't feel right. I wouldn't know anything about kissing sisters, but I do feel comfortable saying that after watching a supremely contested, back and forth, roller coaster of a shootout for a little under four hours end in a tie, I just don't feel right.

The Packers end the first quarter of their schedule with a record of 2-1-1, with wins over the powerhouse Lions and Commanders, a loss to the lowly Browns, and a tie with the Dallas Cowboys. Just like we all thought it would shakeout, right?

If you're a fan of offensive showcase and high-flying offenses, this was probably a great game to watch. Well, except for the ending. The Packers had tons of opportunities to put this game out of reach, but so did the Cowboys. At the end of the day, the stakes of this game were obvious to anyone, but football fans everywhere were treated to a potential game of the year. Historic rivals (honestly, it's possible the win was out of reach the second Brett Favre walked into the building), with fresh, new stakes and a twinge of desperation on both sides.

Game Balls

Jordan Love

From a career perspective, this was an incredibly important game for the narrative of Jordan Love. There's a real argument to be made that this is the first shootout game of Love's career, and it ends in a tie (there's an argument for the 34-29 loss in Brazil, or the 48-32 wildcard game in the same building, but that contest was never in reach for the Cowboys at all). Jordan went toe-to-toe with a quarterback who is playing out of his mind so far this season, and looked every bit of the part.

Love's final stats: 31/43 for three touchdowns, one sack and a 118.1 QB rating.

When he's got the protection, Love is as dangerous an opponent as almost any quarterback in the league, and I think he'll continue to prove it over and over this season.

Romeo Doubs

Turns out we may have had WR1 all along?

Doubs has come a long way since his one game suspension from the team in week five of 2024, almost exactly a year ago. He's been the team's best receiver by far so far in 2025, and earns a game ball with a career high three touchdowns. He's making a push for some major money on his new contract that he'll sign in the spring, whether in Green Bay or elsewhere. It's of course been long speculated that this will be Doubs' last season in the Green and Gold, but with the way he's been playing, and the connection he has with Love, the front office might consider working something out. After all, we live in the age of void years and fake contract numbers, and with salary cap guru Russ Ball working in Green Bay, I will say "never say never" to a return.

Josh Jacobs / Emmanuel Wilson

Lots was made about this game being a potential "get right" opportunity for the Packers. While that did turn out to be true for the offense, none more so than for the Packers rushing attack. Despite looking somewhat stagnant through the first three games of the season, they exploded in Dallas via Josh Jacobs and Emmanuel Wilson, who each get a game ball.

The team combined for 164 rushing yards on Sunday night, with 86 from Jacobs and 44 from Wilson. While Jacobs' streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown sadly came to an end last week, he made up for it with two on Sunday, bringing his season total up to four. How about those 71 receiving yards on top of it, which led the entire team? Jacobs reminded everyone that he was the team's MVP last year, and won't be content to start slowing down any time soon.

Wilson had a couple of real nice touches in the second half, especially when Jacobs suffered a cut on his knee late in the second half. The rushing attack didn't take a noticeable step back with Wilson on the field, and he played a major part in setting up late scoring drives: first to take the lead in what would be the Packers last touchdown of the game (19 total yards), and then to tie the game up permanently later in overtime (28 total yards).

Of course, no rushing attack would be possible without its big boys up front, and I thought the offensive line did a fine job in re-establishing itself in this area. Darian Kinnard had a heck of a game at right tackle for Green Bay, including a big block to spring Jacobs loose for his long touchdown run. Dallas' defensive line isn't exactly a group of world beaters, but the Packers returned to a standard of moving men on the ground.

Lame Calls

The Pass Rush... With a Caveat

That caveat is Micah Parsons. After ending the first half with only one pressure, no sacks and no tackles, Parsons returned to form with a dominant second half. He would go on to end the game with eight pressures, one sack (yes, it did count as a sack) and an incredible 34.5% pass rush win rate. Not to mention, doing all that through double and triple teams (and lots of uncalled holding).

The rest of the defensive line, and really the entire defense as a whole, did not play up to its new standard of high play. The pass rush was ineffective, despite facing an offensive line down two starters. The run defense was gashed, especially after Davonte Wyatt left the game. Edgerrin Cooper had what was probably his worst game as a starter in the NFL to date. And the secondary was put in straight jackets by Dak Prescott and George Pickens all night. The entire unit will need to re-group, and pay special attention to the Bengals medical reports concerning one Joe Burrow for their next matchup.

Special Teams

I've been extremely forgiving of Rich Bisaccia over his tenure in Green Bay. The special teams hold a very hard to quantify place in the NFL, and it can be hard to turn those units around. Especially in a place like Green Bay, where historically they have not been too keen on keeping "special teams aces" around on the 53 when they can't contribute in other areas. Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur have changed that for Bisaccia. The kicker and punt positions have been a rotating nightmare for many years. Bisaccia no longer has that to worry about. Sometimes, special teams coordinators can have trouble getting "their guys" in on the team. Bisaccia has tons of "his guys" here.

So, the problem must be Bisaccia.

Look, I don't know about his role as Assistant Head Coach. Hell, he might even be the best Assistant Head Coach in the league. We don't know, because we don't know what his duties in that role are. We don't have all-22 of Rich Bisaccia, the Assistant Head Coach. But we do have all-22 of Rich Bisaccia, the Special Team Coordinator. And it's inexcusable. Penalties. Illegal procedures. The revolving door at punt returner. Two blocked field goals in two weeks?

Nope. I'm done. I'm out.

The Last Play

Imagine an alternate dimension where, after sitting through nearly four hours of that game, you watch helplessly as the clock winds down to triple zeros in overtime, the offense unable to get that final play off in time. Green Bay never gets the chance to attempt that final, game tying kick. Pity the poor souls in that dimension, for there but by the grace of Lombardi go we.

We are so, so lucky that Green Bay gets to leave that building with a tie, and not a loss. Put it down to poor clock management, and throw the entire play-calling sheet for that four-minute offense in the dumpster.

Three and Out

--  "Conservative". That's your word of the week. Get used to it, cause you're going to be hearing it a lot. It starts in the second quarter, when the rushing attack is established through sheer force of will, at the expense of a passing attack that had been carving the Cowboys to smithereens. Soft zone calls on defense. Not going for a fourth down attempt at midfield in the first half. Late in overtime, seemingly playing more to set up the game tying field goal than a game-winning touchdown.

There's going to be a need to rewatch the game on my part, but my gut tells me a lot of the lack of aggression on offense can be explained by a lack of trust in the offensive line. After all, we all saw how the game in Cleveland was lost. Do I think the playsheet was shrunk a bit in this game, to account for some lost opportunities on the line? Yes. Those should have been adjusted to as the game went on, and the fact that there was really only one shot at the endzone in overtime is inexcusable.

-- The major new injury in this game was Devonte Wyatt, who left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. His absence was noticeably felt for the rest of the game, as the only real DT body among the defensive starters. The Cowboys ran the ball at an extremely effective pace following his exit, and the Packers will surely be hoping for good news on that front. Nate Hobbs also left the game with a possible concussion.

-- When the 2025 schedule was first released in May, there was a lot of bellyaching about a week five bye. Now? It can't come soon enough. This team needs to get the ground back under them in a major way, especially on defense. Getting some players back on the offensive line will be key. On the defensive side, there needs to be a re-tooling in the secondary, and I'd personally love to see more of a rotation between Nate Hobbs and Carrington Valentine when the team returns to play against the Bengals.

Kalani, you are now done with Bisaccia? I believe LaFleur needs to keep him around for "continuity's sake" per his infatuation with Barry's performance after the 2022 season.

Packers D players were slipping and sliding all over the Dallas field when attempting to tackle...especially Cooper. Cleats a 1/4 " too short vs the Cowboys...who weren't slipping?

Slipping and sliding is what players do to avoid tackling ! Packers are soft and avoid contact at times . Did anyone notice Nixon on the amazing sideline pass I believe in the 4th quarter . He was in the end zone and started to come out towards the receiver who was wide open but then he stopped and just watched as he made the catch . He stopped almost 10 yards from him . Just watched . How about a little hustle and act like you give a crap. Laziness on # 25. .

Good analysis.
Bisaccia should be fired today. Someone, anyone should have a replacement in mind as this is a long-term, festering problem.

I still think the coaches and players played down and were caught off guard with no answers.

If they're going to do anything about special teams, now is the time to do it. They have two full weeks to make a plan, change the coach, or do something, anything, to fix it.

Two major disasters, and several more inexplicable, unacceptable mistakes.

It just can't go on like this.

I did not realize how important Wyatt is for this defense before this game. Overall, the line play on both sides was not great. Love did well given the pressure. But special teams, yet again, uffda.

Commentators have been saying how well the offense played yesterday but I saw the O line once again get manhandled by a defense. The pass pro was terrible and the running game didn't really get going until late. I hate seeing our O line getting pushed around and Love really has little time to throw

You know, the refs made that call on Jenkins for moving the ball near the goal line, yet after that I watched the Dallas center do the same thing many times and it was never called. I have never seen that call made before.

The refs call a phantom penalty there....what? How about the no call obvious no call grounding? Or the obvious interference ?
This is my biggest complaint with the NFL. This is not just issue because I'm a Packer fan, I watch a lot of other game and the same crap happens.
I understand it's a tough job being a ref, missing these calls however, raises a lot of suspicion concerning sports gambling.

I'm not ready to place all the blame for poor special teams play on Bisaccia. Perhaps MLF isn't giving him the right personnel to field effective units. On the blocked extra point they had Luke Musgrave next to Banks, the backup to the backup OL trying to guard the right side. As a result, they whiffed and we have a blocked field goal. Lafleur needs to be willing to put more starters on teams to increase the level of play. Your kicker shouldn't be the one making tackles on returns either!

I'll add one more complaint to the special teams' diatribe. How many kickoff returns did the Cowboys have that went over their 40 yard line last night? I lost count....... You can't give up that much field position in a game. Packer special teams have become a nightmare.

Meanwhile, our kick returners seem befuddled on how to pick up a ball and return it. 3 times we started from the 20, 3 times Dallas started from outside their 40. And, did we rehire Joe Barry? Dallas had to get the ball out quick, so when they need 5 yards, we play 10 yards off the receiver and give them an easy 6? Poorly coached, poorly played game. Sure glad we gave Bissacia an extension and gave Aaron Banks $77 million.

I think the correct quote relates to a tie, not a loss. Found this:
This expression comes from Navy coach Eddie Erdelatz in 1953, when he came up with this classic definition for a tie football game while describing a scoreless tie between Navy and Duke.

"There's a real argument to be made that this is the first shootout game of Love's career, and it ends in a win"

I think. you went to bed at about 8:00.

"Love...Doubs"

Doubs has always been Love's security blanket. I thought he could have a big game against Dallas' secondary, and 3 TDs IS a big game, but there wasn't a lot of punch otherwise. For the "trade Doubs" crowd, he's the man with Reed injured. This offense may evolve away from him--Golden is finally starting to get his chances, and Reed and Watson will be back at some point. But where is this team without Doubs right now?

I've been reading other postings (and other places) where fans are beating on Love, but he played really well. Outside the fumble--a little ball security AND pass pro, please--I thought his pocket presence was good, he threw the ball away rather than forcing passes, and he responded down the stretch with big throws and clutch drives on possession after possession. 31 completions to 10 different pass catchers, no one with more than 6.

"and throw the entire play-calling sheet for that four-minute offense in the dumpster. "

They managed that last drive about how they needed to. They couldn't give that ball back to Dallas with any meaningful snaps left on the clock. My issue was that on those last couple plays in close, they threw a designed short pass to Golden which went nowhere and then he had to dump one off in the flat to the RB that did nothing. Part of that was pressure from Dallas, but the Packers needed to get a shot or two in the end zone at the end (and not with 6 seconds to go), and there were no moving pockets or rollouts that get Love a chance to get out of bounds if necessary if nothing was open.

As for that last play, Love's gotta have a better feel for the clock in his head. He needed to clock that last ball instead of tempting fate. Even LaF seemed incredulous when Love went to the sideline-- in a 'WTF were you doing?' kind of place. If it's a TD, then we all go home happy, but they almost effed up the whole thing.

"the run game"

Struggled early, but the OL started opening holes through the B gaps and on the edges in the second half. This was what kept the Packers in this ballgame--the ability to tear off chunks of yardage later in the game on the ground and to keep Dallas honest. They should be able to run the ball on Cinci and AZ after the bye, especially if the OL is getting healthy.

"Pass rush"

In a league designed to favor offenses, it's hard to win week-after-week on the strength of your defense--and if you put up 40, you HAVE to win. The sad part is that the last two weeks, beat up OLs have been able to hold the Packers' pass rush at bay. I said last week, "we'll know how good these DBs are when they find a team with a competent QB and an OL that can block them up." Sometimes you don't need a good OL, but just enough chips from RBs and TEs and just an extra beat to get the ball out. Turns out the DBs didn't have a good night last night.

"Turnovers"

Um, hello? Where are they? Supposedly a focus of this team in the off-season, it's hard to win in the NFL if you're not taking the ball away. That's gotta change.

"Penalties"

Down to 7 after 14 last week and 10 against Washington with still too many of the 5 yard, mental mistake variety and they came at the most inopportune times.

"Special Teams"

So, if popping the ball up and dropping it just outside the goal line on KOs is so confusing, why not catch the damn thing and run to hedge your bets? You're likely to get at least to the 20 or 25 (that's what we learned last year). Do something.

The missteps in the kicking game are well documented, but unmentioned is the Packers giving up significant returns and favorable field position on KO returns to Dallas late when Aubrey only needs to be within about 60 to be good. Yes, they have a good returner, but he was getting free runs and the Packers couldn't get off their blocks.

Really good synopsis, Dobber!

I thought Love played an almost great game. Made all the throws and runs...he needs to roll out more...looks comfortable and effective doing it. Early on, LaFleur dialed up some dandies on rollouts...to Kraft going right, and that beautiful pass to Jacobs to the left. Love and his TE & RB executed it perfectly. His pocket presence was excellent.

Where Love was not great was "taking care of the ball". The swat fumble was an inexcusable turnover and he almost lost the game by draining the clock at game's end. Taking a shot for a TD was fine...but watching the clock tick away before you take the shot was also inexcusable.

Given current OT rules, I don't fault the game ending play sheet. Moved the ball well but and were very conservative...had to guard against a T/O or loss on downs. Get into FG range to "half the hole" (they did), then take a few, albeit safe shots for the win.

Pass rush was surprisingly flummoxed. Does Wyatt truly make that much difference at DT? He might. Because the bench behind him doesn't do much. Brooks is hardly noticed when playing. Thought he'd be better by now. Hafley and Covington were getting "some" decent pressure at times...but not consistent at all last night.

Discipline penalties and below average STs...what else would one expect from a LaFleur coached team?

I am going watch the game recording. Feelings of confidence, frustration, anxiety, and disappointing relief. Maybe I won't.

The fumble came after several plays where Love was waiting for the play develop, leading to pressure. Whether it was bad play calls, bad because it kept happening, or Love not seeing something in the D or an open receiver, it kept happening in the 2nd quarter. Bad coach or bad QB at a bad time.

Brooks was the only other IOL I remember getting to Prescott or close apart from Wyatt. Unfortunately he was called for a technically correct but extremely ticky tacky face mask. Much more so than one missed on Love earlier. The problem with Brooks is in the run game, as it is with Wooden and was with Brinson in preseason. Wyatt has been much better than expected in that regard. Not great but adequate. The others have not.

Phenomenal breakdown, dobs.

I agree with you on STs... Holy F. How do you NOT address this after what we've seen through the first 3 weeks? Here we are... seeing it all over again in Week 4 v. DAL.

CTFB and make a freaking RETURN! Why let it drop? Unbelievable. Really, the STs gaffes are far reaching, and LaFleur has to fix this. We might have won the game if we started from the 35, TWICE, instead of the 20...

Is GB in the 90th percentile in starting from their own 20 after KOs??? I wouldn't doubt it.

There were so many Packers players who didn't deliver the W. Gary. Van Ness. Mussgrave. Valentine... McKinney. Williams...., along with HC Matt LaFleur. Did our HC leave our ST Coach Bisaccia hanging out to dry with allowing less than our top OL last night??? Justice Mosqueda seems to believe so.

Wyatt was a huge loss, but, Gutekunst must provide the iDL depth that won't get blown off the ball. We have needed NT depth, bigs on the interior for the last 5 years. Have ridden that position with zero depth the entire time. While he did draft Devonte Wyatt, my top player for us in his draft, he neglected adding the necessary 0-1T players.

Here we are, as witnessed with Wyatt's knee knocking him out of last night's game and zero depth behind him, save for UDFA rookie Nazir Stackhouse, who had no one behind him for most of last night's game. Add in Edgerrin Cooper's worst night as a Pro and, it was a recipe for disaster.

Time to sign another true NT or two/make a trade. Can't win it all if you cannot stop the run up the gut.

GB drafted NT BJ Raji in 2009 and signed NT Howard Green in 2010. Stackhouse is our only true NT... Brian Gutekunst, please fix this. You too, Gary, Van Ness (seriously, Parsons was double/triple teamed all night!!!), Brooks, Wooden, Valentine, McKinney, Cooper... W O W .

FIX THIS, LaFleur, Bisaccia & Gutekunst, et al.

The only thought that makes sense is Love was thinking the game clock was the play clock. Otherwise, wtf are you doing, Jordan. I came to this after listening to Jordan's post game comments last week. " ya know, it's a fast game. I go through my footwork and ball out" I'm thinking " that sounds like a programmed mind.. almost like the balls coming out no matter what cuz that's what I'm programmed to do..
At some point MLF needs to be held accountable. Why all these soft questions? I'd be getting removed if I were the reporter.. someone ask him why he consistently shows up with undisciplined, flat teams? If you think he's an ass now, ask him that question.

Rich Bisaccia has not improved our ST units since he was hired. Period. He was hired to improve STs, and they’ve shown themselves to be a disaster ever since.

How many years did we waste with his personal project, Anders Carlson? What round did we DRAFT him in??? (Sorry Corey). Bisaccia had to have him. How many games & opportunities did we lose because of that fiasco?

Enough already. Find a better alternative, Matt LaFleur.

The inexcusable PAT block, after allowing a blocked FG the week before, changed the momentum of the game we were winning entirely. If not for Parson’s TIE saving sack…

The ability to manage conflict and handle confrontation is not in Matt's DNA. His brain told him Drayton, Menenga et al were doing a good job even when the evidence to the contrary was there for all to see. He can't correct problems his nature won't let him see. He's a nice guy who is constitutionally incapable of effectively leading an NFL team.

Personnel management for a leader accountable for a large group of employees to help him to meet HIS GOALS is essential. Letting people go or reassigning them is not pleasant, but necessary if you want to win a Lombardi.

I have believed for many years LaFleur cowers from confronting difficult player and coach decisions. Not in his wheelhouse. Very status quo when it comes to these consequential decisions.

However, injuries don't just stop happening, there will be other injuries to deal with even as Reed, Watson, Tom and Banks get healthy again. You just hope that injuries don't happen to the key players like OT, key receivers (or QB, Lord preserve us) or our main pass rush man, Parsons.

Fingers crossed for Wyatt too, as he is pretty important for our run defense.

If we never start a series on the 20 again it will be too soon. That is incredibly stupid football and we did it twice last night. The opposing team is lined up on the 40 and has to run through a bunch of our guys. We have a supposedly fast guy catching the kick off. Running at each other we are guaranteed to get at least to the 20. If you are a bit scared of contact, run to the 22 and slide down. I have no idea what they are thinking.

Dougie, it's freaking stunning... How are they not getting this and fielding within or close to the safe zone? Did they not address the new rules? Unbelievable.

If not for ST blunders like that and worse, the Packers would be undefeated at this point.

I put all of this on MLF. He should have fired Bisaccia last season. Think of how many games we've lost because of STs spanning a decade or more.

ACCOUNTABILITY should be a thing in Green Bay.

One thing is clear: the Packers are a classic example of 'good enough never is."

I noticed the Lions dismantled the Browns.

This is starting to look very much like much of the Mike McCarthy era: lots of penalties, bad clock management, sorry special teams. lots of injuries and all the parts never fitting together.

Don't forget one fact: the Cowboys didn't have Lamb for the game. How would the Packers have been able to stop the passing attack with Lamb and Pickens there?

I said going into the season this team will either be 11-6 or 6-11. I see the side I'm leaning towards after the nightmare in JerryWorld.

I watched the Lions game and it was much more of a contest than the score indicated. The Browns D played a solid game. The Lions D set up a couple scores and they returned a punt for a TD. No cakewalk, but Jesus, both those teams played so much harder than we do. It's a different speed and intensity.

Agreed, the Lions sort of crept away from the Browns. They didn't run away and hide...it was 20-10 at the end of the third and the Lions needed a punt return for TD to really put the Browns away.

The Lions struggled to score for the same basic reasons we did. The Browns likely always will struggle to score this year. The difference is the ST score meant the Browns D wasn’t left close enough.

In essence, the Lions O did just enough whereas ours did not, handed them critical field position and their STs made points not surrender them taking the game out of the range of the Browns. The Lions offensive plan was much less conservative than ours was a week before. That arguably made the difference.

ditto and Hafly looks like Capers and berry, a guy trying to play pass defense with 5'10 know bodies who lack cover and tackling abilities.
This team has refused for ten years to acquire the back end talent you need to go all the way.
They created a small market philosophy of cheap ball: spend it on QB and Oline so you can run the ball and keep your weak dbacks on the bench.

I am getting close to pulling a 180. I am getting close to calling for MLF’s head.

The end of last week and the last minute of the first half onwards this week was unacceptable. It’s not player ability. It’s organization, intuition. Special Teams. Coaching. The same mistakes. Over and over again. This is year three of the rebuild and year 7 overall. Ever since the last time we were in Dallas, this team has found ways to lose games it should win against good competition.

UNACCEPTABLE.

There is still time for MLF to right this ship. But if this team doesn’t at least win the division and a playoff game, I will be calling for his job. Oh, and Bisaccia needs to be fired yesterday.

This season seems so far to be very much in character with most of his previous ones. The failings aren’t all at the coaching level, but many appear to be. There’s no sign of evolution as a head coach, more a repeating pattern of coaching questions, personnel choices, indiscipline, questions of preparation, conservative game plans and instincts on O as well as not winning the tactical battles too often. In the NFL even half of that list is likely terminal for a HC after a few years.

This team is not getting it done and we are past time for performing below expectations. It either turns around dramatically or we are heading for change. How pervasive depends on whether this was a blip for the D or a team figuring it out. Same old, same old is not urgency manifesting.

The easiest part of our season on paper approaches after the bye. If we do not grab it by the scruff of the neck I suspect that by the time we play the rest of our divisional games it will be praying for a wild card and probably the end of an era.

You can’t lose to two teams as bad as Dallas and the Browns (D notwithstanding) have been. You particularly can’t go around revitalizing teams regularly and expect to survive as a Head Coach in a win now year without a pretty stellar string of other games to counter them. The crunch is coming fast.

Great post CW. I totally agree. I've been out of the MLF fanclub for a while, but I understand you do not want to be continually changing head coaches a la the Bears. If they come to the conclusion that MLF cannot/will not take the club to the next level, the question becomes "who will?" I hope they are already doing diligence on potential replacements.

MLF wasn't conservative right before halftime, when it got to third and long on what your own 20 with nineteen second or so left (at that point just run Jacobs once) and let Whelan punt the damn ball. PS, R Walker is in a total regression... Coldworld ... you were so right on E Wilson he really looked good in Limited action. Hats Off

I got off the MLF train some time ago after the fiasco of bad ST coaches (unfortunately it's happening again), continually throwing long on 3rd and short (we did it again last night on the last drive and wasted valuable time), terrible clock management (the beginning of the last drive had no urgency until we lost so much time they had to hurry), getting conservative and not putting away games, not being creative in play calling, blah, blah, blah. I believe in the players, but not MLF. A great coach strategizes and makes productive ingame decisions, improves the team, doesn't allow stupid penalties to be repeated, shows steady, strong leadership in difficult battles, and does what it takes to win close battles.

Year after year.. I use the analogy of parent friend instead of parent. He wants to be one of the guys as well as the coach.. im not certain that's definitely the issue but it's close.. how else can you explain perpetual undisciplined teams?

Romeo Doubs
6 58 9.667 18 and 3 (THREE) TDs

Even better, that last clutch CLUTCH 3rd down receptions basically won the whole game. Without it, a drop or an INT or an incompletion and that game is OVER on the spot.

You’re right about Doubs clutch play off 4th and 6. Unfortunately, it got to that point, it never should’ve. On 3rd and 6 they threw the ball 20+ yards downfield. WTF, play call was that? You have two plays to get a first down, run plays that have the best chance of getting the first down.

Easy to cry 'Bad Call ! when no call looks good when it doesn't work. Plays that work always look like good calls. Hindsight. AGreed though that great teams get a 1st down on 4th-&-1 EVERY TIME. Dominant teams move the chains at 2nd & 6 or 3rd & 4 AT WILL -- case-in-point is 'Holmgren's' 1998 roster, which rode the Edgar Bennett & Dorsey Levens horses all the way to the Super Bowl, reliably racking up first downs & moving the chains AT WILL. Until Holmgren abandoned the run in the 2nd half, literally giving it up to Denver.

THUS was born The Holmgren Rule: Never Abandon the Run in the Second Half.

After being a Packer fan since 1959, I've seen it all...from superior to inferior. Now days, it's starting to look a tad bit inferior. I don't see team consistency...what I do see is a cork floating on a rough sea. Too much junky stuff that just does not connect well. How many times will LaFloor keep calling running plays that aren't paying off. Today's football is all about the pass and the Cowgals followed suit perfectly by killing the GB defense with a sharp looking passing game...look at the stats. Mistakes? The Packers have learned how to make mistakes so how did that happen? It's due to poor coaching techniques. My memories of 1959 was a coach who practiced the power sweep until the players were totally sick of it...but they got more of the same practice after practice. I don't think coaching does that anymore...now it's milk toast...and it shows!

I love Lombardi as much as the next guy, but teams aren't allowed to practice anywhere near as much now per the CBA. Remember two-a-days? They've gone the way of Corvairs and drive-in movies. You can't practice guys "until they were totally sick of it" anymore. And it shows.

The practices nowadays are much less physical contact than the Lombardi days as well. What astounds me is how players still manage to get injured in practice. Why did the backup OL men for the Cowboys play so well, while the backups for the Packers were less than average? If the Packers dumped Bisaccia, would it be a good idea to go to the college ranks to replace him? This is a young team, and someone more used to younger players might be able to teach them the skills they need.
Also, Pickens for the Cowboys had an unreal night. He had at least four catches that were simply jaw dropping. Time to regroup, refresh and reset. Also, expect some pundits to jump off the Packers bandwagon, and start claiming they are overrated. Not really. Both offense and defense both played at high levels the first two games. Then the defense was excellent in Cleveland, while the offense choked. This game, it was the defense that laid an egg. If the Packers can get back to what they did the first two games, no problem. If those were flukes, then we'll find out the next time the Packers play the Lions.
What does it take to win it all? Get hot at the right time. And that time is still a lot of games ahead.

Matt La Fleur is stretched too thin as a HC and in order to cope he hands off too much responsibility to sub-par positional coaches, refuses to make hard personnel decisions such as firing, and insists on doing all of the play-calling, in-game management without the assist of an real Offensive mind. No one stops him from his weekly failed forays. We have to witness repeated lack of growth over a 7 year period. Who is this guy reporting to? Ed Policy needs to have a serious discussion with him over the bye. Why can't a billion dollar team not have ST coaching replacements in the pipeline? Don't they know any top notch Offensive minds who could stand next to MLF and collaborate, weigh-in, over-ride?

God, I wish some of these coaches would resign--how about starting with Bisaccia-where is his self-awareness , integrity and team-focus.?

Lame call that's worked out fine: NFL sticking us with an early bye in a long season. Now we

The Packers have had five special teams coaches since 2010. Replacing them hasn't worked, even replacing them with supposedly one of the better ones in the business. Using more starters on the units instead of exclusively bottom of the roster players hasn't worked either. So the only reason you can conclude for this enduring travesty is that the two head coaches employed during this time (not counting Philbin) have not prioritized, or at least devoted enough quality time or effort to special teams practice--otherwise you'd have better results. And you have to continually develop guys that can thrive in these specific roles.

The offensive and defensive units deservedly get the lion's share of the attention, but you have to have the fundamentals of special teams play down game in and game out; if not, poor execution comes back to bite you in the ass and opens the door for bad things.

These last two games looked like their standard issue, week one effort. Never prepared, mistakes, clueless, same old excuses by MLF.

"The pass rush was ineffective, despite facing an offensive line down two starters." It was non-existent, same as it was last season. Parsons is busting his ass out there, you can see it, but he can't do everything. He makes them better, but the D was overrated by the "We're going to the Super Bowl choir." So how good are they? Still overrated. The secondary is a big ? still. If all it takes to be a #1 corner is stating you want to be one, then they should have shut-downs even on the bench. If Lamb would've played it would've been worse.

"Late in overtime, seemingly playing more to set up the game tying field goal than a game-winning touchdown." There was no doubt in my mind they were playing for the field goal. Even the announcers were talking that way, like the tie would be an acceptable result. Cue Herm Edwards.

Special teams...why even bother bringing it up? Obviously continuity is much more important than results.

Jordan Love did well, although he still doesn't know when to take off and move the chains. Maybe if someone could explain it to him that he gets a new set of downs and more chances to throw the ball, the light would go on.

A lot of people wanted to get rid of Doubs after what he did last year.

I agree about the bye week.

After the first two games I thought we'll see what the Packers really are come Thanksgiving. I'll bet Detroit can't wait for Thanksgiving, and not for the stuffed bird.

Ed Policy is beginning to feel the weight of his job watching ineptness. With questionable playcalling in the last 5 minutes, incompetent, DB coverage, disturbing specail teams, DL weakness, nearly clock diaster. Today PackerNation is taking a deep breath and claiming we didn't lose the game. But we didn't win either and that sucks. McFleuzy has got a barge full of mistakes, misjudgments, and missed tackles to clean up. The players may get a week off, but the coaching needs to stay in GB and figure this Packer fairytale fantasy out before the Bengal game!

This game call goes out to my wife, Heidi, who 'tolerates' watching football with me weekly and will often have me pause the game to explain something or ask 'what did you see that I didn't see there?'.

So...she made me pause the game, rewind and freeze on Dak P standing on the sideline. She then asked (confessions -- I do NOT pay attention to uniform details, players' hair and such...just the game...but HEIDI zooms in on that stuff and obviously noticed something).

She asked: what's that little Darth Vader-like character on the shoulder of his uniform?
'Whu?' I say pulling my mind out from the midst of the game...'wachu talkin' 'bout, Willis?'
'There's a little figure by his arm'
'No there isn't...there can't be'...'wait a second...'

Turns out it was to honor Dak for having won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award

In 2017, the league started a new tradition to honor the work that its players do. If you've won the Walter Peyton Man of the Year Award, you're entitled to wear a patch of the trophy on your uniform. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award is the league's most prestigious honor given annually to the player who best represents the greatness and compassion of Walter Payton on and off the field.

Award winners get to wear the special patch depicting the trophy on their uniforms for the remainder of their NFL careers. There are (I believe) only 5 current NFL players with this designation:

Calais Campbell (2019 winner)
Russell Wilson (2020 winner)
Dak Prescott (2022 winner)
Cameron Heyward (2023 winner)
Arik Armstead (2024 winner)

So, my 'Game Call' goes out to my wife Heidi. I did not catch this on his uniform...but she did...and thought enough to ask about it. And I learned about this detail by looking it up.

(The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award statue, originally called the "Gladiator Award" trophy, depicts an undistinguished caped lineman standing alone on the sidelines, outside of game action.) The statue is supposed to represent the ideal football player, a composite of every man who ever played, or will ever play, professional football.

As an aside, stats can be misleading. I know Rashan Gary has around four this year, but last night you couldn’t find him on a milk carton. Even with Parsons being doubled. These guys have no shame when it comes to the dumb” look at me “ celebrations. He’s totally not worth what we pay him.

Gary is short on character and a show-boat. Parsons will have a word.

It's pretty clear you have absolutely zero fucking idea what you're talking about.

Gary is a work horse who grinds and does what's asked of him for the sake of the team.

I've never seen a report, heard a sideways comment, or otherwise to suggest anything else.

Gary is a show-boat who beats his chest every time he sacks a player and then has no problem disappearing for numerous games. Where was he last night? Make no mistake, Parsons was the only DL player who showed up last night and I'm certain it was embarrassing to him and yes, he will have a word w/Gary.

Learn to read deeper into people's character.

Who the f are you to question a player's character? Do you know this man? Have you personally talked with other players/coaches about his character?

This is Rashan Gary's 7th year with the team. Give us ONE example of a coach or fellow player who has ever, EVER, made any accusations against Gary for any of the nonsense you're spewing. You can't.

Maybe you're the one whose character needs to be questioned. As I read deeper into "people's character", you really are coming across as a crappy human being.
