Packers 24 Panthers 16: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers bounced back after last week's bad loss on the road and won what turned out to be one of those classic "snow globe" games at Lambeau Field, taking down the Carolina Panthers, 24-16.

All three phases turned in a nice effort and hopefully gave the team some positives to dwell on heading into the bye week.

On to the day's good and bad.

Game Balls

Aaron Jones

Jones just keeps showing up in this column week after week, it seems.  13 carries for 93 yards and three touchdowns on the day.  Jones now has 14 on the season and has to be deemed a professional Lambeau Leaper, at this point.

When 33 gets the ball, good things happen.  It's often said "get the ball to your playmakers" and, along with receiver Davante Adams, Jones is one of those guys.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, during his postgame comments, said that maybe it's time to start talking about Jones in the race for league MVP.  If he keeps running and scoring like he has, it's going to be tough to ignore.

Kenny Clark

Clark made his presence felt all game long and it's a sight for sore eyes to see him on this list.  On the stat sheet, Clark had four tackles, one for a loss.  He was in the backfield all day long.

The bye week should help an ailing Clark heal up between his calf, shin and back issues.  The Packers defense needs a healthy 97 down the stretch.

Preston Smith

Smith had two sacks on the day and four hits on Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen.  That pressure led to some incompletions and forced Allen to throw some very sub-optimal balls.

Smith was the first Packers defender to reach 10 sacks this season and said that he plans on buying Rolex watches for the entire defense.  It would seem, however, that everybody already knows what time it is: time for another sack by Preston Smith!

Davante Adams

118 yards on seven catches and 10 targets.  Adams cannot be covered all game long.  He logged a 38-yard catch on the day and was a huge reason the Packers offense kept moving as well as they did.

With some big games coming up against the San Francisco 49ers and their divisional match up's, Adams is going to be needed on a weekly basis.  No reason to think he can't come through.

Kevin King

King led the defense with nine tackles, one for a loss and two passes knocked down on the day.  His continued availability has us seeing what he can do with a full season of health and availability.

Lame Calls

Penalties

Way too many by the Packers and a few that kept Carolina's last drive alive and with a chance for the Panthers to score and tie the game at the buzzer.  In all, 10 penalties on the day.

Last week against the Chargers, the Packers backed themselves up way too often and got away from running their offense trying to make up yards.  Fortunately, this week didn't completely kill the game plan, but it did keep Green Bay from more favorable down-and-distance and led to several punts instead.

I was going to give David Bakhtiari the only lame call but with this many flags on the day, the entire team gets one.

Others to mention:

  • Za'Darius Smith was around the quarterback a lot but didn't notch a sack.  Carolina had a plan to negate his rush and kept him just far enough away that Allen was able to escape a few near sacks.  If only "almost" counted in football
  • That said, sure would be nice if Rashan Gary would join the party and get to the passer once in awhile
  • Jaire Alexander nearly had a game-sealing pick that could have gone to the house.  If he wants to be elite, he has to make those types of plays
  • Aaron Rodgers still throws the nicest ball in the game.  Many have deemed Patrick Mahomes the heir apparent, but until it happens more consistently, Rodgers is still NFL's top passer
  • Hard to see Marquez Valdes-Scantling falling on the receiver depth chart.  One target all day and a ball that Rodgers gave him a chance to catch.  MVS didn't get up and high-point it, which could still be some lingering effect of his leg injury from earlier this season
  • Go rest up and enjoy some down time, fellas, and be ready to roll in two weeks!

Game Balls...Jones AND Wiliams...What an excellent one/two punch the Packers have. As much as I've bashed Ted Thompson on this site, he absolutely got those 2 picks right. Thank you Ted!

Red-Zone Defense...Once again the Packers D showed up in the Red-Zone. Yes, the Panthers scored while down there twice. But the Packers also had an INT down there to end a drive and they STUFFED the Panthers twice in the last second's thanks to the offsides by Preston Smith which BTW was pretty friggen borderline IMO. I see opposing teams further off than that and not get called for OS.

Lame Calls... The D-Train celebration...Maybe I'm a party pooper but the Packers REALLY have to start to hold opposing offenses UNDER 400 yards before they start celebrating too much.

ONE attempt passing to the RB... COMMON MATT LAFLEUR, You are one of the bright young minds in the NFL. You were able to score 30 plus points multiple games despite missing your #1 WR. WHY?? Because you involved the running backs in the passing game. I think I speak for many when I say it was AWESOME to see the running backs involved in the passing game so much, ESPECIALLY after McCarthy (No offense Mike).

The last 2 weeks the Packers have COMPLETELY got away with what worked and worked WELL for 4 weeks without Adams. Take the bye week and get BOTH Adams and the RB's involved in the passing game at the SAME time. Once you do that this offense will be lethal.

BTW... I REALLY wanted to mention the end of the first half but I'm respecting Nagler.

8-2 Folks...Go Pack Go!!

"ONE attempt passing to the RB..."

How many screens did ARod dump because they were covered? 3? 4? Carolina clearly had a plan to take the RB passing game away from the Packers yesterday, but that meant the ball got to the WRs a little more.

"COMMON MATT LAFLEUR,"

I think he's a relatively rare Matt LaFleur.

Carolina had a CB covering both Williams and Jones when they split out all game long. Teams see video and make adjustments. Part of the reason Rodgers targeted D. Adams who had only a CB and no bracket coverage for most of the game when both running backs were in the pattern. Pick your poison. Panthers choose Jones and Williams, and Rodgers made them pay..

Just like last week I agree on this D train thing. It looks pretty dumb to me. If we were a dominating D it might be different. You get a lucky bad snap fumble and you act like you just won the super bowl. It was nice to see Tramon after his pick act like he had been there before and just sprinted to the sidelines.

Game Balls:
Jones/WIlliams Duo - They compliment each other so well. Jones had 13 carries for 93 yards and 3 TD's. Williams had 13 carries for 63 yards. combined they had 26 carries for 156 yards and 3 TD's.

Smith Brothers - Preston had 2 sacks, but it felt like Za'Darius could have had 5. He was in the backfield all game long.

Clark - He had his best game of the season. I'm hoping its a sign of things to come. Hopefully he is getting healthier especially with the bye week. He looked more explosive and was in the back field all game long.

Lame Calls:
Special Teams - They are just terrible. It would just be nice to have one game where something really good happens from special teams.

Penalties - They were bad. Especially the 2 offsides penalties on the Smiths on the last drive were enough to make me want to pull out my hair.
But the 2 OPI penalties were just horrible calls.

Alexander dropping the game clinching interception - If he wants to be considered the best of the best he has to make that play.

Notes:
I thought Campbell played well in his first game back.

Graham had a really good game overall. His blocking has really improved of late as well.

I also complained about MVS not high pointing the ball. I'd like to see him go up and get it. He must not have felt the safety closing in.

Bye week! This team goes into the bye week pretty healthy. But they could definitely use it.

"Special Teams - They are just terrible. It would just be nice to have one game where something really good happens from special teams."

When the Carolina returner fumbled the ball at the goal line on a KO return, we witnessed the only way these Packers ST coverage units can keep an opponent inside the 30 yard line.

"Za'Darius Smith was around the quarterback a lot but didn't notch a sack. Carolina had a plan to negate his rush and kept him just far enough away that Allen was able to escape a few near sacks. "

Pettine has been saying all along that pass defense is more about pressure than sacks, and this defense got pressure yesterday. It turned into several 'throw the ball up for grabs' ducks from Allen that his WRs repeatedly bailed him out on. Packers could have easily had 2-3 more picks yesterday.

...and what's with the grounding no-call on that late drive? Allen clearly in the pocket, no receiver within 10 yards of the ball, and no flag? ARod seems to get called for that every time.

Will be interested to see how many snaps Campbell and Sternberger played yesterday. They were both on the field a lot--especially Campbell, in his first game action in a year--and Sternberger threw some nice blocks in the run game for a guy who supposedly has a long way to go as a blocker.

Williams' three successive runs for first downs should have sealed the game. Both Williams and Jones look great this year. Which makes me think, as much as anything else, the run blocking has clearly improved this year. Mentality, Jenkins, emphasis, Jenkins, whatever it is, Jenkins, this OL group has made strides.

MVS and Allison are bench players now, thankfully. Lazar and Kumerow have Rodger's trust.
Baffling that MLF didn't throw to the backs.
Rodgers is smiling and unconcerned he didn't throw a TD. Shows he's bought into the system and he's playing for the team and not stats.
We lucked out with this late bye;
Cambell can be integrated better during practices.
So can Lazar and Kumerow
Adams will heal some more
Glaring issues are readily apparent and we have two weeks to make adjustments.
An already healthy team will get healthier
8-2, leading the division, in line for a bye... all good.

You need to look at snap counts
It may seem like MVS and allision are bench players but it's only because they don't make plays on the field

far and way GMO was 2nd in WR snaps, not remotely close 45 to 30 I believe

MLF didn't throw to the backs, b/c Carolina was playing a defense to take that part of the offense away and so they threw more to the WRs.

We're spoiled sitting at 8-2.

Game balls to Graham, Clark and King. Graham finally played a complete game, contributing with good blocking and timely receptions. This is the Graham we all had hoped to see when he was acquired. Jason said all that was needed to be said about Clark and I concur. King played one of his better games as a Packer. He wasn't sensational, but he was solid in coverage and tackling. If he can maintain that level of consistency he will be a huge asset down the stretch.

Lame calls to MVS and Allison. If these two are WRs #2 and #3, they need to start playing like it. Both are currently being outplayed by Kumerow and Lazard and need to step up their games. I believe we particularly need MVS's speed to take the top off defenses, but he needs to get more than one target per game and he needs to start catching the ball.

Lame call to MLF for not taking the points (FG) at the end of the first half. All that game ending drama would never have happened if we had kicked the FG.

Disagree with Graham - so what that he caught a long pass - any tight end in that scheme would have caught that pass. Like his extra YAC. But - pre- snap penalty on the first series - could have had a major impact - ending up going 3 and out and put the defense back on the field. And a vet like him needs to know to get both feet down - that was just lazy - he had a lot of room and was not pressured. So no game ball to him - revenue neutral.

I'm not so sure about giving Kevin King a game ball. Way too much cushion. The reason he made 9 tackles is because they kept throwing at him. I was almost hoping they would put in Tony Brown for him.

It was great to see Kenny Clark being so disruptive. Did Gary even play? I don't remember seeing him.

I wonder what the snap counts were for the receivers. It seemed like Lazard and Kumerow were in there twice as much as MVS and Allison. That PI on Lazard was a joke. Sure killed that drive.

One more thing. I've been watching the Pack for over 50 years and I've never a more anemic punt return unit. They're really bad. I guess if you just let the ball drop and clear out you can't muff it.

8-2. There are a lot of strengths on this team. A few opportunities that they can improve on though...

He did play well. I followed 35 on a lot of snaps. I still think Raven Greene is better. He plays with more snap in run support and appears to know the scheme better. But, it was Campbell first game back. And he was a clear upgrade from the rotation they had there the last 6 or so weeks.

Apparently, Burks and Jackson are still Pettine's "Secret Weapons".

I think Raven is better than Campbell and it always helps to have depth. I think this is our weakest position on D right now and if we can get Raven back, I like our chances to make a run. It would be totally bizarre to get the team almost totally healthy this late in the season and the more time under the new coach, the better things should click. San Fran will be a real nice test for us.

MVS and Allison are a 5th round pick and an UDFA.

I have said this before but no one listens. We need to draft a WR in the top 2 rounds next year, if available. MVS is not good enough in the intermediate routes and does not get separation. He is a speed guy. That's it. Allison is ok but he is not #2. More of a #4 guy.

I am going to temper my enthusiasm on Kumerow and Lazard. I like both of them and what they have done but they still have to be consistent the rest of the year and next year before I will get excited about them.

Jones and Williams are dynamic together. We need to ride them and continue to use play action. That is when our O is best.

Rest up and see what happens the rest of the season!

I generally agree with your point that we need more talent at WR, but I disagree with the notion that MVS and Allison aren't good because of where they were drafted. I suspect we would love to have Minnesota's wide receivers and Diggs was a 5th round choice and Thielen was a UDFA (and I believe both have received pro bowl recognition). Need I remind you of our own Donald Driver who was a late round pick?

You find good football players where you find them. We just need some better ones at WR.

MVS has a high ankle injury. That's a really nasty injury to play with. Both muscle and nerve damage. Look what happened to D. Adams when he came back too soon. That he is able to be on the field says a lot about the young man. Allison is two weeks from a concussion, he probably should have sat this week and last week too. And don't get me started about the secondary injuries... Football is a brutal game. We may love it, but lets not forget that basic fact.

I listened and am preaching the same point. NO ONE felt the Packers need to draft a WR this past drafty and I disagreed. Rodgers has always been at his best with MULTIPLE WR options, not just bodies at the position.

BUT Gute faced a dilemma which was he had a LOT to fix with just a few picks. Savage was the absolute right pick and so was Jenkins. I think Sternberger was too but time will tell. I'm still thinking the REAL Rashan Gary will start to step out next year.

Agree 100% on Jones and Williams,

Why are so many so hard on KIng?
In this Packers "Give them at least a 10yd cushion" defensive system at least King showed he can tackle.
With the talent they have available they are painful to watch, is it the system, is it lack of effort, or is it the 'Wrong' coaching?
Maybe they need to bring Woodson back to teach these guys how to cover, how to step in front of a receiver and get a pick rather than just wait for him to catch the ball and then TRY to tackle him.
The D-line chased Allen all over the field yesterday and he still found open receivers consistently.
Unless this changes guys like Brees and Brady (and others) will pick them apart and all the work to get to the playoffs will result in a 'One and Done'.

With all that said. forcing opponents to punt isn't exactly a good thing considering our great Special Teams!

Lame Calls: Not kicking the FG at the end of the first half. Too many penalties, MVS and Allison

Honorable mention, the OL and the DL. They won the LOS for most of the game. For most of the game the Packers did a solid job of containing McCaffey.

Maybe you were watching a different game. What you're missing is that King led the team with 9 tackles including 1 TFL plus he had 2 passes defended.

King had 7 passes completed against him the longest went for 15 yards. The 7 passes totaled 64 yards.

So I gave him a game ball for his tackling, specifically not allowing YAC and his 2 passes defended plus the fact that he led the team in tackling. Considering that the passes thrown his way were mostly quick passes King did a nice job of preventing the big play on his side of the field. If only the guys covering the TEs were as effective we may have shut out the Panthers. Anyway, I think that's at least some of what you are missing. Rewatch the game maybe there is more. In the red zone the packers went into a formation with multiple tight ends a fullback and one receiver out wide - Lazard. Really? I know he's tall but really? You think the other team is going look out we got Lazard out here or going thank goodness we don't have Adams out here?

In the preseason Mr. Nagler commented on a loose atmosphere created by the new coach. This may have helped with the awesome locker room vibe but perhaps plays a role in all the pre snap penalties for this team.

The backs are the best weapons on this team after Adams. Keep them in the passing game

Game ball: You forgot to mention that Preston Smith was the guy who held on and made the tackle at the goal line to preserve the win. Where would we be without the Smiths? Also, Crosby for making good on his second shot at the field goal--that final Panther drive would have been a tad more difficult to watch without it. Anyone who looks out for the fans' nerves gets at least an honorable mention.

Lame call: Both head coaches for getting cute and not using their kickers when the situation called for it (Packers at end of first half and Panthers not kicking the point after).

You are exactly right.
Blake was a disaster on the final play and it would have been a td if he had been run at.

All game, pass or run he is not remotely getting the job done.

This morning WTMJ announced Blake and P Smith saved the game with that tackle

Not remotely true. Some dope at the athletic 'broke' the play down and credits Blake. Not a mention of Lowry being on the bench (finally) or of Clark taking 2 blockers out and not being moved an inch.

Hype is an issue and it does not say much that Blake was on the field and Goodson was not

As Al commented yesterday in Nagler's Gut Reactions post. The NFL does have a rule and about pulling a running back forward, but as in the Denver game, it's seems not to be enforced.

Yes the Packers won but there were lots of holes to fix. Again, 400 yards offense for the other team! Tony Romo said that if the Packers played a team with a good WR and a good QB they would have trouble ( He did the Packer Raider game) up the middle. He's right. They have big problems in the middle of the field of covering the wide outs. They weren't just open by a couple yards, they were open by a lot of yards!

Our offensive line has to get their crap together also and A Rod too. Too many false starts at crucial times in the game. Especially when we are down inside the 15 yard line. And it is getting very old now when Rodgers keeps getting a delay of game in the 2nd half or he has to use a timeout because of bad clock management. A wasted time out because you get out of the huddle late then take too long to hike that damn ball is BS. But what really gets me is you take a time out and then get on the field and get a DELAY OF GAME. Really. Lombardi would ream him a new you know what. Same with the false starts. You can't afford to lose time outs in the second half. It has came back and bit us too many times already.

And next time you have a chance to go up by 7 points at the half DO IT. Take the sure points. Don't try an get greedy. It backfired big time and we almost lost the damn game. Even if Carolina would have scored at the end of the game they still would have been down by 3 with almost zero time left.

I’m really puzzled as to why MVS and G-mo have disappeared in this offense. I thought MVS was supposed to be our deep threat. However, very pleased with Lazard’s play. Let’s see more throws to Jones, too. 8-2 is great, but that being said, there are a LOT of things we need to improve in the stretch run!

Game Balls:
- Fackrell!!! He seems to be around the QB a lot, even though he isn't getting sacks, and he was the first one who stopped CMc at the end.
- Defensive personnel for stopping the run - much better run defense this week. When they went to a light box, CMc would inevitably get a chunk of rushing yards. I think some faster, better ILB's would really make this defense much more effective.
Lame Calls:
- Rodgers missed a couple of downfield throws - the shot to Adams, who had to slow down (and then got the ball knocked out), and the end zone throw to Lazard, who was running to the corner, and had to stop, which made it look like Rodgers threw into double-coverage - Lazard was open with space in front of him. He has underthrown MVS earlier in the season too. Those are big plays that would have turned this game into a blowout.
- Play calling at the end of the first half. (or just take the FG)
- Graham not getting both feet down, also at the end of the first half.
- King (partial) - he made some good plays, but blew a coverage, and had too many completions in front of him.
- They should have sealed the game when they were running so well (but the other team gets paid too...)

Coming into the game, McCaffrey averaged 110 yds rushing per game.
GB gave up 108 yards to CMC. CMC leads the NFL in rushing yds/gm.

Coming into the game, McCaffrey averaged 5.34 yards per game.
GB allowed him to average 5.40.

Coming into the game, McCaffrey averaged 45.37 receiving yds.
GB held him to 33.

Coming into the game, McCaffrey averaged 8.46 yds/rec.
GB held CMC to 5.5 yards per reception.

Coming into the game, CMC averaged 155.5 yds from scrimmage/gm
GB held him to 141.

McCaffrey had a roughly average to just slightly less than average day. Some context and some perspective are useful here. I checked my thesaurus for a different superlative to gash. Gouge? Cleave?

My point was that they changed their personnel to stop the run. When they didn't, and went to a "light box" - just 1 ILB - they gave up yards. They went light for the whole SD and did get gashed, but not against Carolina.

Game balls to the play makers, we have a lot of them. We never would have had close to this record without Gute and the FA signings.
Lame to the fall off of Allison, MVS not taking a leap (maybe injury). The play of BAHK (maybe injury) Heal up, rest up, time for some well deserved RR.
6 games left 3-3 gets us to 11-5, I see no worse than 12-4.
