Packers 2022 Practice Squad Signings Tracker

With the passing of the NFL's 53-man cutdown deadline, the NFL futures of roughly 800 players are anyone's guess. In the next week for roughly 500 of them, the future will still seem bright. At 3pm CST today, teams around the league will begin to sign players to their Practice Squad. The Practice Squad rules will continue on with similar rules since 2020, allowing clubs to add up to 16 players total. Of the 16, only 10 have to be rookie or 2nd-year players; the other 6 can have as little or as many seasons possible. NFL teams can also protect 4 players on their practice squad from being poached by another team for their active roster.

Will the Packers sign another future Allen Lazard or Marco Rivera? Only time will tell....

Practice Squad Signings

1. Danny Etling - QB (Matt Schneidman)

2. Jack Heflin - DL (Tom Silverstein)

3. Rico Gafford - CB (Tom Silverstein)

4. Chris Slayton - DL (Jordan Schultz)

5. Travis Fulgham - WR (Tom Pelissero)

Here is who else I want the Packers to add:
OLB Kobe Jones
RB Tyler Goodson
OT Caleb Jones
WR Juwann Winfree/RB Patrick Taylor Jr.
S Micah Abernathy

additions from outside:
TE Austin Allen
EDGE Janarius Robinson

Edit: Robinson has been signed to the Vikings’ PS. They can sign Winfree now. They could also cut Tipa and sign Robinson onto their 53. Tipa is too light to be a real edge rushing threat in the nfl, and Robinson is 6’6, 260 lbs, and has super long arms. I think they should cut Tipa and either sign Robinson or a veteran EDGE, like Jason Pierre Paul or Devon Kennard. They could also cut Carpenter and sign a veteran safety like Jaquiski Tartt or Anthony Harris (I’d prefer Harris or Pierre Paul).

Update: With 4 spots left, here is who I want to be on the PS;
WR Juwann Winfree
OLB Kobe Jones
S Micah Abernathy
TE Austin Allen

Edit: Wilborn has been signed to the PS. Probably moving on from Winfree. I hope they are able to sign Allen. The dude is 6-8 and averaged 15 yards per catch at NU (I’m also a Huskers fan, so I might be a bit biased). I also hope they leave a spot open for Abernathy once he (hopefully) clears waivers.

Maybe the Packers could cut Tipa and sign Robinson onto their 53. Tipa is too light to be a real edge rushing threat in the nfl, and Robinson has some exciting upside

Love the Austin Allen idea. He definitely has some things to work on, but with some time he would fit really, really well into this offense.
EDIT - Allen is back on the Giants practice squad so that one's not happening.

I’m a big Red Cheesehead too! Happy about Toure. Maybe if the Packers cut T. Davis, they could sign Allen directly onto their 53. Loss to NW was tough on Sat. Casey looked good though.

Just looked at Austin Allen tape. Can he block? Good hands, typically goes down after the catch. But at age 23, 6' 8", a 34" vertical, 81" wingspan, very intriguing. Wonder how the very accurate AR could utilize him in the Red Zone? Worth an offer to the practice squad. We need insurance at TE.

I honestly don't expect Winfree back, simply because he probably wants a better opportunity to crack the 53. Not only would he have to beat out Fulgham to get priority to getting promoted, but he has to wait for possible 2 of the 7 WRs on the roster to go down first. If I were him and I got an offer from another team with less WRs to cut through, I'd probably take it.

I agree. I am thinking that he is somewhat disenchanted with the Packers by the way things have gone for him the last couple of years.

If he is picked up by another team, it is my understanding that he has to go on their 53.

I checked the Chicago Bears website as part of ESPN and the have picked up 6 players already but not Winfree.

I can see the point of Winfree wanting to go to another team with more opportunities, but I'd be sad to lose him.
I'm not sure why Winfree would be behind Fulgham; I'm not sure if Watson is ready to play all that much; I'm not sure how healthy Cobb is to start the season.
What we know about Winfree is he knows the Packers offense thoroughly and is ready to go, perhaps more so than even Doubs and Toure.
So, maybe Winfree isn't that far back in the line of wide receivers, after all.

The guy I was really concerned about getting swiped from the Packers was Tyler Goodson, so it's so good to have him back in the fold.
It seems to me the way injuries can hit a team from September to December, and into the playoffs, at least some of these players from the practice squad are likely to be on the field this season in real games -- which would mean that what happens today is no small matter, but actually a pretty big deal after all.
It's also worth remembering that Rasul Douglas was signed by the Packers off the Cardinals practice squad.
Therefore, thanks to CHTV and Joseph for providing this list of signings to the practice squad.

With Practice happening and 4 spots still unclaimed (or reported) my gut is telling me one of two things:

1. Abernathy, Jones, and Winfree could be entertaining offers from other teams (or even signed).

2. The last 4 spots will come from players who weren't with the Packers during the Preseason.

EDIT - I stand corrected, Jones was seen at practice.

Some losers on this practice squad your paying money for. So what if they sort "know the system'. Its can they play the position they were picked for and for most of these guys that answer is no.
I like Taylor and Caleb Jones. Our linebacking is weak again this year. Gary and Smith cant play all the downs. Safety may still be a problem and who knows about the middle. Didnt see a pass rush in pre season and yet we put those guys on the practice squad? Too bad Gutt didnt look outside for better talent instead of just picking some of these losers again.

All teams have weaknesses in depth. Some also have weaknesses in starters. GB is solid in starters and better than most in depth. Considering we always draft late, and are paying $50 Trillion to the QB, it's a remarkable job by Gute and the staff.

I understand resigning Abernathy. We all need to see more about this guy as he killed it during pre-season. Is he for real or just fortunate?

However, unlike many I just don't see an upside with Winfree being he is buried on the depth chart. I also do not believe he will want to return if he has another option. What I expect/hope the Packers to do is keep an eye out for a good move TE to help their passing game. They have Tonyan (back from knee injury), and they have Tyler Davis. Is there anyone else that might be an upgrade from Davis?

I was only worried about 3 guys being claimed from our cuts and that was Caleb Jones, Tyler Goodson and Jack Heflin but that worry was short lived as all 3 are back.

Once I saw that Washington waived RB Jarret Patterson I thought he would be a good consolation prize if Goodson got claimed or decided to join another PS. He was a guy I really liked the year they drafted Kylin Hill. He played great in the preseason last year and played in some games for them when Gibson or McKissic were injured. I guess small shifty RBs who can catch the football aren't that sought after in the league.

Really like the Rudy Ford signing though, he's a heck of a punt and kickoff gunner who will make an instant impact for this team. I think Packerswire or Acme packing co. has a good write up on him with some video proof of his exploits. Has the 2nd and 3rd fastest top speed as a punt gunner at over 22 MPH which is fantastic. He also comes in under control and actually makes tackles as the first guy down there. That is awesome, nice find Gute and Rich.

SH,
Is he loyal or did he wait until this evening to see if ANYONE was interested in signing him? I certainly would not blame him for checking out all options before re-signing.

Who knows which WR's will be on the Packers in 2023 but I would not be surprised at all if Cobb & Watkins are gone. Neither would I be terribly surprised with all the resigning of guys like Jenkins and others if Lazard is gone if he doesn't ball out this year.

Not granted it is still too early to know for certain but right now the thought of Amari, Doubs, Toure, and Watson is sounding pretty good as 2nd & 3rd year WR's. Now throw in Winfree and the Packers have the makings of a pretty good WR corps. I wouldn't have been terribly upset if Winfree went elsewhere, but I do see him next year playing a larger role once some of the veterans are gone.

I like Taylor and Jones. The rest, could care less. Couldn't tackle, pass rush, pass defend, or do anything on special teams so who cares if we keep them? You can't trust them if we need em. Goodson is a dime a dozen guy. Most of the time stoppedfor loss.

Seems crazy, but I develop player crushes much like I do with the annual player draft, and wait with bated breath to be sure they make it through waivers (knowing full well that it is highly unlikely any will be taken). But it makes for a fun day.

Ya has anybody at any time ever wanted one of our losers on the practice squad. One thing we do know, put these guys on the active roster and teams will know who they are and exploit them.
I did see the LIons, Vikes and Bears actively go out and add guys from other teams and a trade too to update their final talent.
We stood pat. Good luck dont want to hear any bitching when the a team goes down in injuriy flames.

Glad Micah Abernathy is back on PS. Safety is a position that needs more depth and he deserves a shot. Only problem I have is kicker Ramiz Ahmed is not. They need a kicker if Crosby falters. Ahmed should be on PS before WR Travis Fulgham. I see no reason to keep Fulgham over Ahmed. They kept 7 receivers and Winfree on PS. Fulgham won't see any playing time.
