Official: Packers fire HC Mike McCarthy

Mark Murphy has clearly seen enough.

The Green Bay Packers will start their search for a new head coach a little earlier than expected.

After nearly 13 seasons with the team, the Packers have parted ways with Mike McCarthy.

According to a release made by the team Sunday evening, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has been named the interim head coach for the final four games of the season.

Team president and CEO Mark Murphy expressed his parting words for McCarthy.

“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately. ... Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”

The Packers lost to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and fell to 4-7-1 on the season, virtually -- but not mathematically -- eliminating them from playoff contention. They'd still be able to sneak in with a 8-7-1 record, but they'd need a lot of things to go their way, making it far from realistic.

McCarthy was hired in 2006, replacing Mike Sherman. During his time with the Packers, he coached them to a 125-77-2 record, including winning a Super Bowl in 2010. They won the NFC North six times during his tenure and earned playoff spots every year except 2006, 2017 and presumably 2018.

ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that the Packers brought McCarthy in after Sunday's loss and relieved him of his duties. According to Schefter, McCarthy wasn't expecting it -- and neither were most.

The belief was that the Packers would at least let McCarthy finish the season with plans to fire him at its culmination. After Sunday, that won't be the case anymore.

The Packers sport one of the most desirable coaching destinations entering the offseason, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers -- now 35 years old -- and a young roster with handfuls of talent.

Love ya, Mike, but it was over due. We Need to get new. I know Ted didn't help you much lately with his terrible drafting and personal moves the last 3 years or so, but, your offense was stale and needed to be reworked/replaced. Good luck to you and to our Packers moving forward.

But Mike contributed to the failures and he deserved his fate.

MM did not manage his coaches and is too slow thinking for play calling. He was over-his-head and lots of good players have suffered.

He is a prime example of the old “peter principle”. He reached his level of incompetence and we missed a couple of Super Bowls because of him.

Ted provided a lot of great players, but poor coaching messed up our results on the field. Ted’s biggest mistake was not managing MM effectively.

I am shocked that Cleveland would be interested in MM. If he can’t win with a hall of fame QB, what well he do without one?

Good stuff, GBPDAN1.
This was a good move, but still a sad day.
McCarthy led us to a Super Bowl, three NFC championship games, and eight straight playoff appearances. How many Packers coaches have done better?
During the McCarthy years, the Packers became a standard of excellence. It's hard to believe he wasn't a big part of that.
I'm not so sure even Lombardi would've lasted thirteen seasons.
This is a good decision for McCarthy and the Packers and the fans. Thanks for a lot of good times, Mike McCarthy, and God bless you going forward!

I've heard a number of names pop up as possible replacements for McCarthy, one I have not heard surprisingly is Urban Meyer as he will be a FA in 2019. I'm curious how fans here would feel about Meyer as GB's next head coach considering he has had success and championships everywhere he goes in pressure situations. Please vote up for yes and down for no if you also would like to see the collective thoughts of our fellow Cheesehead brothers and sisters on this. Thanks.

Now, can GB interview assistant coaches from other NFL teams, or do they have to wait until the season ends?

Which means playoff teams’ coaches are off limits till after their seasons end?

I'm surprised at the timing but the move was easy to see coming.

MM was a very good HC for a very long time but it just was not working anymore. I think he'll land on his feet somewhere and do well, like Andy Reid. Either way, I'm happy that it is done.

Philbin was my preferred choice for interim, if it came to this. The bottom line for me is that Rodgers needs to get himself wired properly. I think Philbin is the best chance for that to happen in the coming 4 games.

The problem with benching Rodgers is that fans have already paid a lot of money for tickets to see him play. I'm glad that I have made it to GB to see him lead the Packers twice. If I had paid good money for tickets to a Packer home game and Rodgers was healthy but benched I'd be pissed.

While I would like to see the Packers get the highest draft pick possible, I think not only the fans but also the league would have a large problem with benching a healthy Rodgers and tanking the last four games. Intentionally losing those games could impact another team's playoff status (Bears). The Packers could face a very stiff fine for not competing fairly in the last four games.

Its about the integrity of the game. I don't know that anyone has been fined before in the NFL, but there have been discussions about fines in the NBA for tanking games to secure a high draft choice. Can't see the league allowing a team to compromise the integrity of the game without some repercussions.

I think based on Rodgers recent play that we could make a case that sitting Rodgers the last 4 games actually increases our chances of winning. Think about it. Who the hell has this guy beat this season other than Mike McCarthy? I almost bet a healthy Boyle is better than the Rodgers we are seeing out there today against Rosen.

Dash: I agree that it makes perfect sense to bench ARod and install DeShone Kizer as the Starting QB for the last 4 games. ARod cannot sustain any more injuries while being benched this season, which will make him perfectly healthy and at his physical best for the 2019 Season. You can read frustration, anger, and dismay in his eyes... Arod is pissed at losing, pissed at MM lousy play calling, disappointed that his practice time has been lessened by injury, thus causing his new rookie receivers to lose continuity in fielding his catches. His last 4 games reflect many poor passes, quite uncommon for him, and to show MM how unbalanced his play calling, he has set a record for throwing the ball away on many plays. DeShone Kizer is a good athlete, throws the ball well, runs effectively for 1st downs. All he lacks is game time experience with our decimated starters to settle in and perform well. The Pack need to know whether to keep him or cut him at season end, only discernible by letting him play and analyze his game talents. I do not know who the Rocket Scientist is that advocated MM go to the Browns, but their fans have seen enuf failure during the past 3 plus seasons. Their 8-51-1 record from 2015-2018 YTD confirms that a top notch head coach is drastically needed there. Baker M. said about H.Jackson that the players can now believe in the offensive plays that the OC sends in, and both Jackson and MM never use any gadget plays ,new formations etc. Both of these guys should watch College and NFL game films to learn what modern, new, highly successful OC play calling produces in final determinations of their games...outstanding results. MM should shred his 150 plays play calling sheet, an replace it with a U.S. Postage stamp. Run left is 1, Run Right is 2, Pass Anywhere is 3, Punt or try F.G. is 4. The new broom in GB will sweep clean for the 2019 season!!!

JJ, the reason to play Rodgers in 2018 is to see if MM was the problem or if Rodgers is the problem. Firing MM doesn't instantly fix Rodgers have a garbage fire 2018. Can Philbin get Rodgers back on track or do we need to replace Rodgers moving forward? The reason to play Kizer or Boyle in 2018 is to see what our backup depth looks like. If they struggle it could also lead to a higher draft pick. I don't really care what Philbin decides to do because regardless of his decision it'll at least be interesting which is more than I can say for 2018 up to this point.

I really wish I could be more surprised that MM only ran A. Jones 11 times against the NFL's 30th ranked rushing defense. Or that the game came down to Rodgers missing an open WR in the end zone to throw to one who was double covered. Or that Croby missed yet another game winning field goal. The Packers did what they needed to releasing MM and I'm now more excited for 2019 than I was when I woke up this morning.

Philbin is not going to change the scheme enough to know anyway.

I do not prioritize what's best for the NFL or the Bears or people who took a risk and bought tickets for something six months out. I prioritize what helps the Packers in 2018 and beyond. How do you think the new coach will fair if AR gets hurt and misses all of training camp and can't participate in the install. What will ticket values be then?

"I prioritize what helps the Packers in 2018 and beyond. "

Heavy emphasis on the "beyond" part, apparently. It is a very tough sell to make the case that shelving the best players out of fear of injury is best for the 2018 Packers. Such timid action can actually have very negative long-term ramifications.

Aside from the damage to the notion that everyone on the team is in it together, the "beyond" Packers are married to Aaron Rodgers. His contract status dictates he's not going anywhere anytime soon. Taking away opportunities for him to work in live action with the cast of young skill position players does not help gain the chemistry they are lacking now. It sets that back.

I prefer the Packers get a high draft pick. Gutekunst has them in position to restock the talent with an extra late first round pick and an extra 4th rounder. OTC has them at about $38M under the cap (with 40-some players under contract) in '19. The earlier their pick in the first round the better). The Packers management and team can't/shouldn't think this way but as a lifelong Packers fanatic I'd much prefer losses the rest of this lost season than wins which put the first rounder closer to the middle of that round. Remember the last time the Packers won a meaningless end of season game to lose out on a great draft pick?

Best of luck to McCarthy (except if he coaches against the Packers of course). He didn't fail for lack of effort or laziness IMO. Unless your name is Belichick I think teams tune you out after a certain number of years. And Ted did not do McCarthy any favors the last several years of his tenure.

Do you mean the time that 4 of the top 5 picks were HoFers and the Packers picked a huge bust at #2? If they drafted Barry Sanders instead of Mandarich, would you use getting him instead of Aikman as a talking point in support of losing?

Of course there is no guarantee that the #7 pick will turn out better than the #17 pick. But there is a higher probability. Why risk further injury to Rodgers, Bakh, Bulaga, Kenny Clark, King, Alexander ? There is nothing for them to gain by playing in these last few meaningless games.

There is a word for what you're talking about NF. It's called "quitting" and it is not a smart thing for a football team to demonstrate that quitting is OK based on a "probable" better pick, IMO

No matter what, there will be 53 guys on the roster and 46 up on game day for the next 4 weeks. I don't think they will be happy with the team's commitment to them if the best players are sent away. If any will be around in 2019, that might be something that lingers.

Do you think a guy like Bakh is going to be happy that he is forced to abandon his team when things get tough? Do you think he's going to be happy if he loses out on All-Pro or Pro Bowl because he missed 4 games?

Not to mention that there is something to be said for showing some pride and finishing strong after such an train wreck of a season.

No Rak47, I meant the last game of the '88 season when the Packers won the game and lost the "Aikman bowl".

"Do you mean the time that 4 of the top 5 picks were HoFers and the Packers picked a huge bust at #2?" Yes, because hindsight is 20/20. At the time the Packers were desperate for a QB: Majkowski before his "majic" season and Randy Wright were the starting QBs in 1988. If the Packers hadn't won a meaningless game, they'd have picked Aikman and some other team would have had the 'pleasure' of picking Mandarich.

As I posted the Packers can't think this way but I'd be happy if they lose the rest of the games to get a pick in the top 5. The stench of that finish and the season up until now will be washed away by the fresh start of a new HC.

Lmao, that's the dumbest shit ever dude. No one forced them to take Mandarich, they could've had either Sanders, Barry or Deion. Or they could've picked Derrick Thomas. And if they got Aikman they never would've gotten Favre and I'd rather have Favre any day. Real professionals play for pride as well, I can promise you no one on the Packers wants to lose the rest of their games for draft position.

Don't know if you have trouble reading DUDE, but I posted the Packers organization and players can't think that way but losing games improves their draft capital and winning them means absolutely nothing, except perhaps elevating Philbin to real candidate status. (I think Philbin can be a good OC, but not HC.) The point that obviously went sailing over your head DUDE was winning that last game did them absolutely no good.

Also, of course they could've picked a different player, but they didn't DUDE, did they? Favre over Aikman? OK, but you can't say Aikman was incapable of winning titles, can you? For all of Favre's greatness, they won one title with him. Aikman with a great D would have had a chance to at least match that.

Gute appears to be part of the solution not the problem. Can't wait to see what Philbin does. I want to see this "reworked" playbook. Why get rid of Ball? The Perry contract sucks but a lot of that was on TT for not drafting more OLBers. Davante Adams, Bahk, Linsley, Taylor, all look like great contracts for the Packers. If you look at TGR's value article Ball's done a fairly good job for the Packers.

Ball is also a big part of the reason guys like peppers and Hayward are gone. He is very stingy with money and yes it may help talent wise to keep younger players around but sometimes players are worth the money to keep them here... Imagine if we had Hayward to play in place of the always hurt King?

I imagine Capers would still have been using Hayward in the slot and he wouldn't be the player he has been with the Chargers who gave him the opportunity to prove himself. Having Hayward on the team might mean that the Packers didn't draft Alexander. I'll take Alexander over Hayward. Hayward was always injured as well prior to leaving GB so by your logic maybe King will get healthy and step up the way Hayward did here's hoping.

I don’t understand this comment at all. Russ Ball is a salary cap genius but he does not make the decisions as to who gets extended, what their salary is, etc. That is determined by the GM. He structures it to make it as team friendly as possible, not having “dead” money lurking for years.

An ignominious end to one of the franchise's most successful coaches. I thought McCarthy should have been fired but fully expected him to see out the season. Maybe he should have, maybe he shouldn't given the debacle that has unfolded.

We should thank him for everything he did to revitalise this franchise and make the Packers and Green Bay better. It was time for change but that does not diminish what he did for the Packers.

The problems run deeper than McCarthy though and I'd hope people remain realistic about things turning around.

Thanks Mike, genuinely gave me some amazing moments that I will never forget.

As much as this team was his responsibility, he had a ton to overcome. Bare cupboard talent-wise, injuries to key positions, early season robbery of key sacks...and on and on... Aaron is right when he said the offense misses a little here, a little there. But, ultimately, it was his to overcome, his to straighten out. He didn’t.
He got us a Super Bowl victory when there are A LOT of coaches that cannot say the same.

It’s sad to see him go because that means we have to start with a new coach and all because of wasting another Rodger’s season.

Hopefully the grass is greener on the other side.

"Bare cupboard talent-wise,"

Rodgers, Bakh and Clark are among the very best at their positions. Adams, Jones, Daniels and Alexander are just a tick below the very best at their positions. That's a very solid core group of 7 at very important positions. About the only position that has been an absolute liability is RG.

The total is less than the sum of the parts, IMO. For whatever reason, this team has under-achieved. When that happens, the HC is usually the guy to take the fall.

Safety, OLB, ILB, ....

Can’t agree with you. We have glaring holes and areas of true mediocrity. We do have some potential, but this year this roster is just not there as a whole on either side. Next year may see some real progress but this season our roster is simply not strong enough despite the players you named.

That MM couldn’t beat that fact is clear. The real question is could a different coach have led us to the Super Bowl. I doubt it very much. TT’s late career legacy has come back to bite with a vengeance.

There is no team that has a perfect 53 man roster. Every team is looking for talent upgrades in multiple positions. The history of the NFL is littered with mediocre players on great teams cashing in via free agency. It's not until they go to teams that are not clicking on all 8 cylinders that people begin to appreciate their mediocrity. Success in the NFL is largely about coaching staffs that get the most out of the talent given to them and cover up the areas of weakness they are dealt the most effectively.

OTOH, the Packers of late have been a little bit opposite of leading mediocre players to great FA contracts. Guys like Micah Hyde and Casey Hayward have had move elsewhere to really blossom--move to coaching staffs that recognized how to maximize their talent and cover up their weaknesses. Damarious Randall may be turning into another guy like that. Lawrence Guy has carved out a long career and is currently a starter on one of the NFL's better teams. Breno Giacomini started 86 games after the Packers deemed him not worthy of a roster spot.

Casey Hayward had a great season with the Packers and was injury ridden after that. It's not like he didn't play well with the Packers he had a ton of interceptions his rookie year. Hyde had multiple interceptions and returned a punt for a TD it's not like he wasn't good with the Packers.

Jordy Nelson was cut and how did he fare in Oakland? We kept Linsley over Tretter and that's looking like it was a good decision based off of their performances vs. their contracts. Lang and Sitton have been as healthy as Brulaga and are paid a lot more.

There are players who have revitalized their careers with the Packers as well that people tend to ignore/forget and just focus on Hyde and Hayward. Letroy Guion was an idiot but after doing nothing in MN broke out in GB and was a solid but not spectacular player. After disappearing in Chicago Julius Peppers revived his career in GB. Woodson is my favorite Packer of alltime and he revived his career in GB and went on to win DPOY.

I really like and respect Mike McCarthy. He was/is a good coach. But it is time. I don't think the message wasn't getting through any more.
Now, let's not kid ourselves either, some people still here (and some soon to be gone) should be looking in the mirror beginning with the QB who has not played up to lofty standards. The talent level is down and we need an infusion. Gute has plenty of ammo in the form of picks and money for Free Agents. Time to aggressively fill the holes in the offseason as time is wasting.
Lastly, it will be curious to see who the next coach is. It will be very telling. Happy to see they acted quickly and decisively. Go Pack!

Mike McCarthy's time in Green Bay has ended. But not like this. Hasty, cheap, and shoddy. All the hall marks of someone trying to dump their bad decisions on some one else. My guess is this all started when Murphy tried to ram Russ Ball through as GM and failed. Murphy is a lame duck in the final months of his contract. Either way he's done. But Mike McCarthy deserved to go out with his head held high. Not surprised Murphy did it like this. Revenge is a cheap dish easily serve. It's all going to come out now. This is going to get ugly, real ugly....

Minniman - we're not inside 1265 so we'll never know 100% for sure what was going in there. However, over the years we never really heard much from Murphy unless he was updating the fans on the progress of Titletown or Packer World or whatever his development project is called. That's fine it is part of his role to find additional revenue streams for the Packers. But it seems like football is becoming a hobby in Green Bay while Packerville is getting much of the focus from management.

Then at the end of 2017 he swoops into the football operation and moves TT to an advisor role. OK TT was overdue to be replaced as GM but why keep him around and then create a structure with Gute, the new GM, MM and Ball reporting to him. Any structure can work if managed correctly but how does Gute feel about his job security if TT is still hanging around doing and saying who knows what to who and with the HC having a direct line to Murphy.

Fast forward to today. Is the new HC also going to have a direct line to Murphy? Is Murphy going to hire the new HC or will Gute get to make his own choice for HC? Will some of the better candidates want to enter into a structure where they don't report to the GM?

Much has happened since Murphy stepped into the football side of the Packers organization. I'm not sure that it has all been for the best. Has it already impacted the results the on the field? It would be nice if Green Bay had a media that would get some answers for us but I'm not expecting it to happen.

We'll see if much changes over the next 4 games. But if you're a player are you going 100% over the next 4 games and risk a serious injury when you don't know where this team is going? We're looking at 4 glorified preseason games. Fortunately the Baseball season is only 4 months away. Thanks, Since '61

Those developments do have a professional team, but yes he has helped the future revenue stream. That, however, depends upon a vibrant organization on the field. The Packers drive revenue as they draw people in year round based on two decades of being good. Murphy also admitted not seeing the problems within Lambeau. In an owner free organization that is not acceptable. Like the other MM, he should be thanked for his past efforts and askex to seek new opportunities. It should be Gute’s vision now.

Check his bio, he's been the OC for 10 years now, calls their plays, and has several NFL record setting offensive distinctions to his name including most yds in a season with 7497 or 474 yds a game. He's been calling plays for them since 2012. But Lombardi could also be a good choice, glad I don't have to make that decision. Who knows they could hire Carmichael and he could bring Lombardi as OC.

Hmm, I thought riding the “ hot hand” in Jamal Williams in the second half would save his job. Oops, front office was sick of the best player on the bench also. I’ve defended him at times but there has been no excuse for Aaron jones riding the pine as much as he does. He deserved to be fired just for that.

Maybe this will be Rodgers galvanizing moment. Not for this year, but his career. He's achieved greatness through his talent, now he needs to recognize that his game has to change and he needs to play as a teammate. Will he listen to a new coach? Will he allow a scheme that doesn't center on his ability to play on a MVP level?

I'd love to get the next McVay, shannahan or nagy... I'm just not sure whether 12 would allow them to teach him. Hopefully he's less egotistic than I believe he is, and is willing to try a new approach.

Mike you did a nice job in Green Bay for the better part of 13 seasons, but it just wasn't working any longer.

We've had more good days than bad during MMs tenure and I appreciate his efforts on the Packers behalf. It just hasn't been working for the last 2 seasons.

During many seasons MM overcame thin rosters and plagues of injuries. More recently with the roster decimated by years of poor drafts and injuries again Aaron Rodgers was no longer able to bail out MM and the team. Time for a change. The house cleaning has begun.

Farewell MM. I wish you and your family health, happiness and success in all your future endeavors.
For the Packers I wish for another Head Coach who can bring us 8 more consecutive playoff seasons and hopefully another SB or 2 or more.
Thanks, Since '61

MM was proud to be a part of the Packers history and tradition. He brought integrity, resilience and concern for his players to his role as HC.

Like all good things his time in GB had to end at some point. I hope that Gute does just as well or better with his choice for our next HC. Time will tell. Thanks, Since '61

Surprised at the timing but not the at the actual dismissal. I can't help but wonder if the timing is an attempt by Murphy to save his job. Now it's up to Rodgers to prove that the demise of the team isn't all his doing. He keeps saying , we need to play better. Now this group can see the outcome of their actions.

MM is NOT a good HC never has been. He has been surviving because of AR and a weak front office that should have fired him after the Seattle NFC championship debacle. Now that AR is not carrying the team he has been exposed to the point that everyone sees it now. And frankly it’s disgusting that so many are calling for AR to be traded... did you see the offense when they got creative on one of the last drives late in the game?? I think the talent is there to have a much better offense than what we have been seeing mostly due to MM play calling/offensive scheme.

It is a new day in GB. Get gid of TT russ ball and the other MM. go Gutekunst!!

Looking Back: Mike McCarthy should never have signed the contract in 2014. He should have said No. Letting Free Agents go was not his idea. He hated it. People left, and nobody would have blamed him. MM did his job with class. Dealing with such negative press could have gotten to anyone. Signing a 1 year contract was his biggest mistake.

The offense won't change much, too much new terminology and stale play designs to start adding a bunch of new stuff. It will be up to AR to change his approach and take what the defense gives him. It all starts with OTAs and training camp. The draft will be real interesting for sure. The o line on the right side needs a overhaul, CM, Perry gone. The game passed them by too.Perry never materialised. OLB, o line, safety.

I am glad to see this move and agree over due by couple years. My bigger frustration was with TT. It was obvious when TT kept losing guys like McKenzie, Dorsey, Schneider leave there was a loud sucking noise with all the talent leaving. I have been concerned for quite a few years and the poor drafts and lack of talented FA's confirmed my fears.

The firing was great and it creates real optimism for the future. Wondering if Roger's QB coach last year in Van Pelt will be considered for OC? Even a possibility? With Gutey and all the young players and a few extra picks in the draft it will be exciting to see what happens next year. I really enjoyed seeing how the Bears head coach and the Rams head coach were creative and risk takers. Both seriously out coached MM really opening my eyes! Like to see some offensive minded coach with moxie be hired.

In terms of MM I too appreciate what he has done but at the same time find him uninspiring and a poor presenter. He has this appearance of a tough guy, which is kind of foolish. Personally, I think at just 55 years of age he looks like hell. I hope he takes a year off and takes care of himself hitting the gym and seeing a dietician, particularly after what happened to his brother. Good luck Mike!

Past time for this to happen. Though we better get the new choice right, with Rodgers being 35, we do not have time to make a mistake.

Now, we need a coach who has the stones to deal with Mr. Hollywood who has become too much like Favre was before McCarthy arrived. The Favre under Sherman.

My pick would be Chris Petersen who's the head-coach of the University of Washington. Hire Kliff Kingsbury as Offensive Coordinator, keep Mike Pettine as DC, and move forward from there.

If that's not the direction Murphy wants to go, then Matt LaFleur, offensive coordinator, Tennessee Titans would be my next choice, still keep Pettine and I would try to hire Kingsbury as OC.

Either choice would work, and I think they offer the best chance for the Packers to move forward and maximize Rodgers last few years.

Back to McCarthy, I hate he has to be fired during the month of December, but he should've done a better job.

Take care fellow Packer Backers... and GO PACK GO!

I truly hope not. We just fired a coach in season don't need to hire one who's already been fired mid season for dismal performance. He then accepted a job to become the HC of the Colts before going in flake mode and backing out. Thankfully for the Colts they were able to hire Frank Reich who has that team looking really good right now. I personally highly doubt McDaniel's could do anywhere near as good a job in Indy that Reich has done. let McDaniel's stay right where he is in N.E. on Belechik's lap where he's nice and cozy. Last thing Packers need is a wishy washy coach.

Although I must admit I would be quite curious as to what type of relationship McDaniel's and Rodgers might have. If they clicked and hit it off, whoa! look out NFL. McDaniel's may be one of the few young coaches who could say to Rodgers "your way is good and got you a SB" but my way is also good and got me a multiple SB'S" At which point Rodgers just may tune in. Also coaching Tom Brady into his 40's may peak Rodgers interest as well.

This decision had to be made but I would have preferred it happen at seasons end, this organization (except for the Forrest Gregg Era where cheap shots were rewarded) has been a First Class Operation. McCarthy to his credit was never really questioned as a coach until the Seattle snafu where he played not to lose instead of to win (see Bud Gran’t s history). That wasn’t the same Packers head coach who years before went into the Patriot’s game starting Matt Flynn as a big under dog and said, “The Green Bay Packers are no ones Underdog” and even though they lost a close game the players lived up to his comments. Don’t forget that the night before the Super Bowl he had the team ring sizes taken, another example of playing to win. Best wishes to Mike and his family where ever he ends up coaching, and by the way lets not forget that he was a surprise choice by Ted Thompson to be the head coach of the Green Bay Packers and together when historians look back both will get the acclaim they deserve for an excellent run of outstanding football.

This is a CYA maneuver by Mark Murphy. He failed to relieve Ted Thompson of the GM job until irreparable damage had been done to the Packers roster. Instead, he focused his time and energy building Titletown.

I hope to god Murphy doesn’t choose the next head coach. He’s not the right person to do that. Brian Gutekunst should make the call.

Fire Murphy.

In many ways I agree but I must admit, Murphy is riding a hot streak of 3:

1 - he finally canned the whacked out GM;

2 - he hired a possibly great replacement at GM (based on his 1st draft); and,

3 - he finally canned the whacked out GM's mule headed HC.

You could easily argue he waited years too long on (1) and (2) but he finally did do it. Now he must get the next HC choice right. If he does, years from now when GB is hoisting another SB trophy, he will be revered. I am not a Murphy fan and I fear him screwing up the next decision but until he does, the job is his.

He should have been relieved of his command after the Seattle debacle 3 years ago. He also stayed true blue to D Capers and i have seen enough of those embarrassing playoff loses and that terrible defense. Mike is soft and was not a defensive guy and unbelievably the ownership level stayed loyal to TT MM and DC for far to long. Now they have a mess on their hands. Not to mention AR's best years squandered. Short of hiring Bill Parcels or Dick Vermeil they have some rebuilding and don't know if AR will ever play in another SB. I knew years ago it would come to this.

I think the problem in Green Bay was a lack of talent not a lack of coaching. The Packers will not be head coaches first choice because of this. I believe the Packers GM was in the building for all the recent bad drafts. The Packers executive committee will clean house after the 2020 season. I agree with previous posts that this could make Rogers uncoachable.

There are some advantages to letting MM go now. The players all know that they are now playing for their jobs. Possible candidates for the HC position should be eager to interview for the job because of the talent on the team and IR. Potential FA will be more likely to consider GB with a coach that will use their talents better. Finally AR may show some enthusiasm for playing again. He really looks like he has checked out over the last 3 games. We'll see if this lights a fire under A R.

Thank you for you and your family's work supporting the American Children's Family Hospital and raising $325,000.

Thank you for your professionalism in the face of gut wrenching and heartbreaking playoff defeats.

This team’s poor performance isn’t all on McCarthy as he doesn’t throw the ball out of bounds, at receivers’s feet or well over their heads on deep patterns...that would be Aaron Rodgers!! He is playing with such ineptitude at QB that a rookie QB, with the worst offensive stats and a 2-9 record, comes into Lambeau Field and out performs Rodgers in a game the Packers were favored by 14 points and were desperate to win to stay in the playoff hunt!! Are you kidding me?! Arizona, who just got beat last week 42-10 by the Chargers and only had 2 wins against the 49ers?!

Why is it that so many people who watch Packer games all season cannot even admit or say...what their eyes see each game with this pathetic offense...that Rodgers has been inaccurate passing the ball, unable to sustain drives by converting 3rd downs and has been playing the QB position worse than each opponent’s QB he plays against each week?!! It’s plain and clear to see that they will not get close to the playoffs again with the way Rodgers is playing no matter who the coach is. He’s been playing like trash for quite a while now...and yes he is the elephant in the room no one wants to mention. He does need to get traded as soon as possible for whatever draft picks they can get. It is time for the Packers to seriously plan towards another QB before the next 3-5 years are as disasterous as this years’ debacle.

The dead money ($32 million) makes Rodgers untradeable. A $32 million right off against the Packer salary cap next year would wipe out any surplus gotten by releasing Cobb, CMIII, Bulaga etc. etc. Our roster next year would have more holes than swiss cheese and no free agency to help fix it. Like it or not we are stuck with Rodgers. Our only hope is finding a coach who can get through to him.

I remember being very disappointed in 2006 when McCarthy was chosen as our hesd coach.
He just came from SF as their OC, & their Offense was awful.
And he was the main one who, a year earlier with the 49ers, who chose Alex Smith over Rodgers in that 2005 Draft.

You savvy veteran fans who know Rodgers, aren't surprised to know Rodgers still holds a grudge about that.
Hell he still holds a grudge against his FAMILY for them not liking the immoral Hollywood actress Olivia Wilde, even though Aaron eventually learned they were correct.

McCarthy should have for sure been canned last year when he showed how worthless he was as a coach when he had to play his #2 QB. Just like when it happened in 2013 too. Clueless without #12.

Yes, #12 has been bad this year. So many bad throws, & decisions. And attitude.

After today's embarrassment the change was probably inevitable but the Packers best figure out if in Aaron Rodgers they still have a peak performer, damaged goods, or an overpaid diva whose best days are behind him. He is all past reputation at this point. Time to consider trading Rodgers for the future qb. He is to much of a head case to be saved by new coach.

It is amazing how many can’t see that Rodgers cannot physically throw the ball as accurately as he used to downfield. Even short passes he has been throwing into the turf or off target to in stride receivers 10 yards away. His QB play is now subpar as the norm and that’s why this team has the same record as when Huntley played QB last season. Game after game Rodgers is unable to complete over 60% of his passes. Not gonna cut it in the NFL when Brees is throwing at 76% and is 10-2. Packers and the playoffs will be a rarity with Rodgers at QB and only if their defense becomes dominant and can take over games.

"It is amazing how many can’t see that Rodgers cannot physically throw the ball as accurately as he used to downfield."

It's not lost on anyone that Rodgers has not been throwing with the same accuracy this season as he has in the past. But that does not mean he "cannot" do it anymore. That sideline throw to Davante Adams after 9 seconds in the pocket was placed near perfectly. It reminded me of that sideline pass to Jared Cook that beat the Cowboys in Dallas a few years back. And so many sideline completions to Jordy Nelson that it is impossible to count them all.

Rodgers is 35 as of yesterday. He may be on the downside but recent history is that elite QBs can play in to their 40s at a high level. Rodgers has been too good for too long for me to accept that it is over based on one bad year where everything about the team has gone to crap. Maybe it is over. But I'm waiting for 2019 to be convinced.

Recent history indicates that elite QBs can play into their late 30s and one has played into his 40s.

They have to want it. I'm not sure that #12 is showing us that he wants it...and he's 35.

I think the next coach has to have a creative mind and have multiple formations, shifts and personnel groups. When the relationship fractured and there was no interaction it was doomed. This team has a good young core of talent another productive offseason from Gutekunst and we can be right back as a contender. I think a lot of coaches will love to be in Green Bay so that won’t be the hard part. Gutekunst must hire the coach not Murphy let football people do their job. Murphy can give his two cents but let the GM pick his guy.

One aspect of all this is MM can finally tell his side of the ARod discontent tale if he so chooses. I doubt that he will anytime soon but maybe a few years down the road.

What I'd like to know is how often did ARod audible out of called plays? Did he have carte blanche to do what he wanted to on any given play? if not what were the restrictions? Did Rodgers adhere to progressions as designed in the play? Did he fail to pull the trigger when he did go through the progressions? And a much more subtle aspect would be did he not audible out of bad play calls when he could and should have?

Basically what I'd like to know is what % of plays run were MM's versus ARods. At that point I can better determine who was most responsible for the malaise in this 2018 offense. Doubt if I'll ever find out though.

Is that a rock legend as your avatar? Regarding carte blanche, judging by the SI article, MM and 12 communicated with each other through the backup QBs during the game! How effed up is that??!!!??? So that explains all the delays in sending personnel groupings and bringing the clock down to 1 all the time: Rodgers would audible, wrong personnel groupings, shuttle them in, or audible with the wrong personnel groupings in and say damn the torpedoes anyway, and bam! Naked screens to the flat and behind LOS. Or bombs on 3rd and short down the sidelines. Frankly, I think Rodgers didn't give a single shit about this season, for him it was all about getting rid of MM. I'm probably wrong, and there's no way to prove my assertion, and there never will be. But his play overall has garnered nothing but a soulless "Meh" from me all season long.

I have seriously mixed feelings about McCarthy being fired! First off,..............couldn't they have waited until the end of the season? Classless move regarding timing!!
Secondly, im not crazy about the the current power structure with Murphy firing the coach! They better change that asap! Murphy's department and expertise are the business administrative parts of the organization! the gm...Gudenkunsts specialty is supposed to be the personnel side of things!

Other than that....im conflicted in that part of me thinks that McCarthy should have been given more time considering his outstanding overall track record with the team!
The other side of me thinks...that....for whatever reason...that the team under him this season......wasn't responding to him and his system like it has in the past! Was this partly because of the subpar play of Rogers....possibly! Injuries?....inexperience?.........a dearth of overall experienced talent and depth??...also possible!

My question is...........what changes in Rogers performance moving forward? Don't know!!

Overall ,a sad day!!

I'm with ya, Shermann. Is this a move Bob Harlan would have made? Likely not given McCarthy is second in wins only to Curly Lambeau. Think what you like of Mike McCarthy, but he and his family deserved better here.

The abrupt firing smacks of Tom Landry's ugly dismissal fro the Cowboys when the Jerry and Jimmy show hit town. Or how Tom Laughlin was treated in New York.

Sad day, yes.

As obvious as it was that Mike Sherman was a poor choice for both roles (the only 2 starters he drafted were Nick Barnett and Scott Wells) Bob Harlan waited until the end of the season to fire him, everything Harlan did exuded class (hard to believe it was class less Dan Devine who brought him to Green Bay originally). Murphy has put himself with his reorg in a win or loose position based on his choice of the next coach, he either hits a home run or Russ Ball will be the next Packer president.

McCarthy and Rodgers mostly to blame but yes, Gute as well. He drafted... just OK. The first round was good. After that, not that great. Burks a bust. Three receivers two of whom have some promise but there are a couple dozen rookie WR's as good or better. He at least played in FA, but didn't exactly kill it. He did pass on two great players we could have had. NE signed Josh Gordon for a 5th. He's been a stud for them. Gute passed. He was willing to pay two 1sts and the salary for Mack, but Chicago got him -- everyone thinks because the Bear two 1sts were higher. Nonsense. The Packers two first were both for this year, the Bears' this year and next. Ours more valuable. And, the Bears had to throw in a 3rd... and got back a 2nd. We could have given up a 3rd with nothing back. Bingo you have a monster defensive player, in his prime, at your position of greatest need. Players like Mack are almost never available. When they are you go get them. Gute still has much to prove. At least he'll have high draft picks and lots of money to spend.

Gute should have been more convincing... "Gruden you don't understand, we've got MM and they've got Nagy...our picks are more valuable, trust me".

Hard to believe that turned out to be true. Oakland must be kicking themselves for multiple reasons on that trade

I think firing McCarthy now was the right move for his welfare as well as the Packers. Packers are out of the playoffs and four more weeks of him suffering on the sideline knowing he'll likely be fired would not have been kind. I'm sure he wanted to finish but deep down he might be a little relieved.

I actually think Gutekendst burned Murphy's ears off after the game with "It's either him or me". MM would've waited 'til the season was officially over on his own, let the other MM retire and save face.

Now that it's over, I feel somewhat sad. Personally, I hate to see failure, it is all too common. Mike's watery eyes did me in during the post-game presser. I wish him the very best in Cleveland.

In my heart I do believe #12 tanked the season to get rid of Mike. I expect 40+ points next weekend against the Falcons. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, fuck it, I've been wrong a billion times before. But the proof will be in the pudding next weekend. I will be there at Lambeau to see for myself. The game got a whole lot interesting for me and wifey.

And also, fuck the 90s tunes playing during pre-game! I'll laugh my fucking ass off if they'll play one of my favorite "current" songs: Imagine Dragons, Thunder.

Peace out, Go Pack Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those that think Christmas came early, I'd say the odds of a new coach succeeding are less than 50/50. The Packers having played poorly (which is what got us to this point) is not much of a reason to celebrate.

Murphy/Gute may have decided it was time for Mike to go a while back and this game was just the trigger. Personally, if i had decided that, I'd have called him in on Monday morning, not just after the game, to allow him a proper opportunity to say his goodbyes. That isn't unreasonable for an (almost) 13 year coach who was very proud of his time here.

Maybe Mike will take a gap year to re-invent himself, maybe he will jump straight back into the shark pool, I wish him well in whatever he chooses.

There's a lot to be said about our storied franchise good and bad. One common denominator that we take pride in as an organization and fan base, is the respect of the game. Green Bay has always set the standard for class and stands above the fray. IMO we took a step backward today. Was it necessary to fire McCarthy with four games to go? Is it necessary for Rodgers to publicly call out McCarthy after the Bills game? Or shout down his rookie receivers? Is he the cancer or just a curable hemorrhoid? If Rodgers is going to get along with the next coaching staff he needs to take a page out of the book of Favre. Play like a Pro. Serve as a leader.

I'm not sure there is much dignity is going through the motion as a dead man walking for MM over the next 4 games. It may be unlikely but is not outside the realm of possibility that it went something like this last night.

Murphy: Mike, we've made the decision to go in another direction for 2019. Since you've done so much for us in the past, we'll leave it up to you whether you finish 2018 or we turn things over to Joe for the final 4 games.

McCarthy: I'm outta here.

As for Rodgers, I think he's got to bend over backwards to demonstrate that he's not a coach-killer with whoever comes next. The rumors are hot and heavy that MM and AR did not get along. There are some in league circles that openly question him. He's at a fork in the road. He can veer to pure diva or seek to put that speculation to rest.

It was due, MM lost the shine, holding on to Capers so long was a mistake last year. As season wore on it has become apparent that Rodgers has become a diva. He got his way new coach will come in and have to deal with him. Soon he will be on the grill and all will find out whether it was MM or AR that was to blame. Injuries certainly hurt but for whatever reason they don't play like a team. Old dead wood needs to go I see down years for at least 2 more years by then AR will be scrapheap junk. Its been 25 years of pretty good ball in Green Bay hopefully won't be returning to late 70's and 80's when we celebrated 7-7 years and the Bears and Vikes kicked butt.

I see this differently rstain99.
You talk about Rodgers being a Diva, getting rid of the deadwood, and MM keeping Capers too long, but stop and look around a bit.
Who was it that held onto TT for too long while he failed to put the personnel around Rogers to win SBs just as he did with Favre? It was Murphy, the guy that did the power grab that now puts him in the driver's seat. He sat and watched while Rodgers aged and did nothing, so let's hope he gets it right with a new HC.
I'm hoping that all of what's happened in GB the past 10 months was an executive decision and that the BODs has pushed Murphy to get off his dead a$$. We'll soon see if he's capable

TT over-hauled the talent bare roster he inherited from Mike Sherman in 3 years. It was a legit SB-contender that stepped onto the field in Lambeau vs the Giants in Jan 2008. The star QB blew the opportunity. Let's not use revisionist history to turn Favre into a martyr over his own failures.

Looks like the locker room was reading all the negative comments about MM so they packed it in. MM had an organization that knew how to win consistently as he has proven but something had to change and the buck stops with the head coach. Packer fans need to temper expectations going forward. What happened after Lombardi? The grass is not as green as they expect. Personally, I lay a lot of blame on Rodgers. He has lost the fire he once had and you can see it in his lack of leadership on the field. Brady and Brees are way more engaged during a game.

Mike McCarthy is a fine man. I'm sad that this is the way he was let go, but the writing had been on the wall for a while now. I wish him and his family the best. It will be interesting to see the coming changes in GB. As a fan I always hope for the best but the odds of a new coach making a rapid change for the better are at best 50/50. I'll keep my fingers crossed. There is some nice young talent on the team and another good off season and draft could get the Packers back into a true playoff contender in 2019. Best wishes to MM, he worked his tail off for this franchise and should be remembered for all that he accomplished. Time marches on for all and his time with the organization has come to an end. I hope he will be remembered more for what he accomplished than what he did not. That is all we can all hope for. Good-bye Mike. You gave your heart and soul for this team and should be very proud of that!

We just had such a predictable offense. The Patriots game comes to mind. They beat us with flea-flickers, end-arounds, etc. while we looked like a preseason offense. I watched some of the Bears game and I believe they had two touchdown passes that weren't thrown by a QB. Almost ironic that in the last game, MM actually used an end-around with the rookie going for 20+ yards. WAY TO LITTLE TO LATE!

Every Packers fan is putting in their two cents so here's mine. McCarthy and Capers both should have been gone after the 2014 season's loss in Seattle. I had us going to the Super Bowl at halftime as I watched the game with my daughter who's birthday is today. Two days after Arod's. Coaching changes were needed years ago and so we've wasted Rodgers career as the best QB ever in the NFL. Here's my pick for the next head coach. P.J.Fleck who coached Eastern Michigan with his Row The Boat philosophy. Now he's coaching the Minnesota Gophers and I'd like to see him as the Packers new head coach. Crazy I guess but that's who I think will bring a winning way back to Green Bay. He just turned 39 and a young man who can jumpstart the Packers back to winning football. THERE I SAID IT.
