The Daylight Savings Curse Strikes Again in Green Bay

Yesterday was a brutal day at 1262 Lombardi Avenue. After back-to-back road wins, the Green Bay Packers finally returned home to face a banged-up Carolina Panthers team that was already void of much talent. The Packers were -13.5 point favorites, but didn’t take care of business and found themselves on the losing end of a game they should have absolutely won.

The Packers decided to wear their 1923 throwback uniforms against Carolina, but the 1923 team probably would have played better than the 2025 team did. The Panthers took control of the game from the opening kickoff and never allowed Green Bay to get into a rhythm. They ran the ball effectively and used play action to keep the Packers' defense off balance. Rico Dowdle rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns. He was frequently picking up more than five yards on each carry. Quarterback Bryce Young was playing with a banged-up ankle, but the Packers' defense was still only able to generate nine total pressures on him.

On the other side of the ball, Green Bay's offense was out of sync all day. They moved the ball, but failed to finish drives with touchdowns. Jordan Love threw for 273 yards, but no touchdowns, and an ugly interception. Josh Jacobs ran for 87 yards and a touchdown, but they were an ineffective 87 yards. Ultimately, the Packers couldn't convert in the red zone. They finished the day going 1-5 in the red zone and missed what should have been an automatic field goal. The Packers didn't show up at the stadium ready to play, and they got what they deserved.

As Packer fans set their clocks back an hour over the weekend, it seems the Packers turned their clocks back way too far… again. The Packers were practically sleepwalking through Sunday's game. It might just be a coincidence, but the Packers have now lost 11 of their last 12 games on the weekend that daylight-saving time ends. Yesterday’s game against the Panthers marks another loss in what is a strange trend. It might be something; it might be nothing. It’s likely just a coincidence, but it does seem odd that the Packers continue to perform poorly on the same weekend year after year.

A 13 Year Long Not-So-Good Trend

Loss vs. Chicago in 2013

The Green Bay Packers lost to the Chicago Bears 27-20 on November 4. The Packers were heavily favored heading into this divisional matchup on Monday Night Football. They were facing a backup quarterback and riding a four-game winning streak. Instead of taking care of business, the Packers suffered a tough home loss. In addition to losing the game, quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone during the first series and ended up missing the next seven games. It was a brutal night for the Packers all around.

Bye Week in 2014

Loss @ Denver in 2015

The Packers lost to the Denver Broncos 29-10 on November 1. It was a trip to Denver for a matchup between two 6-0 teams on Sunday Night Football, but the night was all Broncos. Denver’s offense was very efficient, and its defense stymied Green Bay's offense. The Packers were out-gained 500-140. It ended up being one of the worst games of Aaron Rodgers' career, only threw for 77 yards on the night. The Packers also lost their starting cornerback, Sam Shields, to a shoulder injury. This Denver team went on to win the Super Bowl that season, so it wasn't a bad loss, but it was a pitiful performance by a Green Bay team that was supposed to be among the best in the league.

Loss vs. Indianapolis in 2016

The Packers lost to the Indianapolis Colts 31-26 on November 6. The 4-3 Packers hosted the 3-5 Colts, but were unable to get the job done at home. The Packers didn’t play terribly. The Packers out-gained the Colts in yards, both passing and rushing, turned the ball over one less time, and avoided many penalties. Unfortunately, Green Bay’s special teams ended up costing them on multiple occasions (hocking, right?), and contributed to another loss on daylight-savings weekend.

Loss vs. Detroit in 2017

Green Bay lost to the Detroit Lions 30-17 on November 6. This was not the Matthew Stafford-Aaron Rodgers showdown that many were hoping for. The Packers were without Aaron Rodgers for this divisional matchup due to a broken collarbone. Instead, it was Brett Hundley quarterbacking the Packers’ offense. The Packers didn’t play terribly, but they were outplayed in just about every facet. In addition to a loss in the win-loss column, the Packers also lost their stalwart Bryan Bulaga for the season due to a torn ACL. It was just a long and grueling day for the Packers.

Loss @ New England in 2018

The Packers lost to the New England Patriots 31-17 on November 4. Aaron Rodgers was facing Tom Brady for the second time ever. This Sunday Night Football matchup was a good game throughout, but the Patriots pulled away late to win convincingly. The Patriots were able to generate several explosive plays to help fuel their offense, including two flea-flickers and a wide-receiver pass. The Packers didn’t play a disciplined football game. They were called for a bunch of penalties, and Jermaine Whitehead was ejected for slapping a New England player. The Packers also lost three starters that game due to injuries. It was a rough trip out east.

Loss @ Los Angeles in 2019

The Packers dropped what should’ve been an easy win to the Los Angeles Chargers 26-11 on November 3. This marked Matt LaFleur’s first game on daylight-saving weekend as a head coach, and it didn’t go well. The Packers traveled to Los Angeles with a 7-1 record, looking like one of the best teams in the league. The Chargers were sitting at 3-5, and their season was looking lost. The Chargers ended up out-gaining the Packers 442-184 in yards and dominating the time of possession. The Packers didn’t do much right. They couldn’t run the ball or move the ball through the air. The Packers only had 50 yards total in the first half. Once again, the Packers weren’t ready to play, and they ended up losing a game they definitely should have won.

Loss vs. Minnesota in 2020

Green Bay lost to the Minnesota Vikings 28-22 on November 1. The Packers came into this game at 5-1, while the Vikings were only 1-5. The Packers were expected to win this game at home handily, but instead, they got steamrolled by Dalvin Cook and the Vikings. Cook totaled 226 total yards and four touchdowns. The Packers knew Cook was getting the ball, and they still couldn’t stop it. The Packers couldn’t tackle or put any pressure on Kirk Cousins. The cold and windy conditions should have favored the Packers, but they came out flat and were manhandled in every aspect.

Loss @ Kansas City in 2021

The 7-1 Packers headed to Kansas City on November 7 for what ended up being Jordan Love’s first career start. The Packers ended up losing 13-7. Aaron Rodgers had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week. The game ended up being closer than many expected, but Jordan Love had no answers for the constant pressure coming from the Kansas City defense. In addition to a lack of offensive production, the Packers’ special teams units continued to shoot the team in the foot. The Packers left Kansas City beat up and defeated.

Loss @ Detroit in 2022

The Packers lost to the Detroit Lions 15-9 on November 6. Neither the Lions nor the Packers went into this matchup having the season they were hoping for. The Packers (3-5) and the Lions (1-6) were both hoping to get back on track, but it was the Lions who came away on top. Rodgers threw three interceptions, and the Packers couldn’t run the ball at all. The Packers were also penalized eight times for 81 yards. It was an ugly game, but one that never felt like Green Bay could win.

Win vs. Los Angeles in 2023

The Packers beat the Los Angeles Rams 20-3 on November 5. It was their first win on daylight-saving weekend since 2012. It certainly helped that they were facing a Brett Rypien-led Rams team. Matthew Stafford missed the game due to a sprained ligament in his thumb. The weather also worked in Green Bay’s favor. The rainy, overcast weather allowed Green Bay’s defense to keep the Rams' passing offense in check. Ironically, it was also the first game that Lucas Havrisik kicked at Lambeau Field. The only real downside for Green Bay was that multiple players were knocked out of the game due to injuries.

Loss vs. Detroit in 2024

The Lions traveled to Green Bay and beat the Packers 24-14 on November 3. It was Detroit’s first outdoor game of the season, but that didn’t matter. Detroit out-gained Green Bay in yards, 411-261. The Lions played a clean game, while Green Bay couldn’t get out of its own way. The Packers were called for ten penalties, and Jordan Love threw a pick-six to end the first half. The final score looked closer than the game actually was. Detroit was up 24-3 at one point. The Lions controlled the game throughout, and Green Bay didn’t play like they belonged on the same field.

Loss vs. Carolina in 2025

The Packers lost to the Carolina Panthers 16-13 on November 2 on a walk-off field goal by rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald. The Packers came into the game at 5-1-1 and were favored by double digits, but were unable to put points on the board. Carolina only allowed Green Bay to have three possessions in the first half, and Green Bay was only able to put six points on the board. The Packers couldn’t stop Rico Dowdle on the ground or put much pressure on Bryce Young. In addition to an ugly performance, the Packers also lost Tucker Kraft, Matthew Golden, Colby Wooden, and Aaron Banks to injuries.

A Coincidence or a Curse?

It seems almost impossible that the Packers could perform poorly on the same weekend year after year, yet the Packers find themselves struggling on the first weekend of every November. Micah Parsons was asked about the strange trend after the game, and he was puzzled by it as well. "I felt rested. I felt prepared this morning. I just think they executed their game plan better than we did. I think an extra hour of sleep is supposed to help people."

For whatever reason, the Packers continue to have a terrible trend going. It's not just losing football games; it's how they have lost them. As soon as the clocks are turned back an hour, the Packers show up underprepared to play a football game. They have come out flat, lacked execution, and been humbled by lesser teams. And it's happening the same time every single year.

In the grand scheme of things, losing one football game is minuscule compared to losing a key player for the season. It seems unfathomable that, in addition to playing poorly, the Packers also have had terrible injury luck the same week every season. Back in 2013, the Packers lost Aaron Rodgers for an extended period of time. Then they lost Bryan Bulaga to a season-ending injury in 2017. And now it's Tucker Kraft who will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.

The Packers won't have long to dwell on their most recent loss because the Philadelphia Eagles will be coming to Lambeau Field next Monday night. The Packers have shown they will play to their opponents' level, so hopefully they'll be ready to play against the defending Super Bowl champions. That wasn't the case yesterday - the day that daylight savings ended. Is this all a series of coincidences or a curse? This negative trend has been happening for quite some time now. The injuries are unpredictable and all bad luck. The lack of readiness to play football falls on the players and the coaching staff. It just is so bizarre that it happens every single year at the same time.

I have set my TV according to P.S.T. - Packers Standard Time - which only turns on once the second half of any Packers game begins. Because it seems that the Packers have become a 30 minute (or less) team.
