Jordan Love Stats: the Good and the Bad Through Two Weeks

Love is 1st in EPA/play and passer rating, but last in completion percentage over expected

Jordan Love has been a polarizing quarterback since he was a draft prospect in 2020. His low-floor/high-ceiling profile caused a split among evaluators — and that's ultimately the reason why the Green Bay Packers were able to select such a talented player in the end of the first round. Now, Love is a much more polished player in his fourth year in the NFL, but it's still hard to properly and fully evaluate him.

Over the first two games of his first season as a full-time starter, there's a lot of good and bad from Jordan Love according to stats, basic or advanced. Mostly, Packers fans should be excited with his potential, but there are areas of attention as well.

The good

Jordan Love has been extremely efficient, in general, even in areas where most people didn't expect (like turnovers). He leads the league in expected points added (EPA) per play, passer rating, adjusted yards gained per pass attempt, and touchdown passes. His 6:0 TD:INT ratio is also the best in the NFL.

This has a lot to do with how the offense in its totality has been efficient, creating a lot of yards after the catch. But there are also important individual positives for Love: how he's put his receivers in position to generate those yards, his efficiency in the red zone, and ability to avoid bad mistakes (Love has had just one turnover-worthy throw this season).

His average depth of target is also good, even though the Packers haven't been able to connect many deep passes. This is nothing new, and Aaron Rodgers was bad last year in passes beyond 20 yards too — it's a combination of schematic choices and the lack of a deep threat when Christian Watson doesn't play.

Surprisingly, Love is eighth in rush EPA, which shows he's also a valuable runner and scrambler, even though that's not his calling card.

1st in EPA/play (expected points added)
1st in passer rating
1st in AY/A (adjusted yards gained per pass attempt, gives extra value for TDs and INTs)
1st in touchdown passes
2nd in ANY/A (adjusted net yards per pass attempt, also includes sacks)
4th in depth of target relative to the line of gain
4th in QBR
4h in ADoT (average depth of target)
5th in air yards per play
8th in EPA+CPOE composite
8th in rush EPA
8th in sack%
9th in yards per attempt

The average

It's crazy that there is just one relevant stat in which Love is between 10th and 20th: success rate. This is promising, considering (and we will talk more about this later) there haven't been many easy buttons for Love so far.

15th in success rate

The bad

It's really unique for a player to be so good in EPA/play and so bad in completion percentage over expected. But Love has been the best in the former, and the worst in the latter. The number is concerning to a point, and Love's accuracy issues are not new. But at the same time, Love is 30th in expected completion percentage. That means the Packers haven't dialed up many easy throws for their quarterback. In comparison, Aaron Rodgers was 12th in expected completion percentage last year, and this has nothing to do with the quarterback individually. But, to be fair, Love hasn't been accurate. He is 32nd in drop-adjusted accuracy.

Love's PFF grade is also below average (26th), mostly because he's last among qualified passers in big-time throw rate and 20th in turnover-worthy play rate — they counted the fumbled snap against the Chicago Bears as a turnover-worthy play, even though Love himself recovered it and turned it into a big play to Luke Musgrave.

20th/33 in turnover-worthy play rate
23rd in passing yards
26th in PFF grade
29th in 20+ deep accuracy rate
31st in completion percentage
32nd in CPOE (30th in expected completion %)
32nd in drop-adjusted accuracy (62.0%)
23rd/23 in big-time throw rate

It's still very early to take definitive conclusions about Jordan Love. Next Sunday, the New Orleans Saints will present the biggest challenge so far — and it's Love's first start at Lambeau Field. But, especially without Christian Watson for both games and without Aaron Jones and David Bakhtiari for one, his performance and ability to execute despite circumstances around him are promising.

What is very interesting to me is Jordan Love efficiency, were he should be at the top far away from second on the list. How I came to that conclusion?

Lets see the stats:
23rd in passing yards
26th in PFF grade
29th in 20+ deep accuracy rate
31st in completion percentage
32nd in CPOE (30th in expected completion %)
32nd in drop-adjusted accuracy (62.0%)

And still he leads league in the most important stat!
1st in EPA/play (expected points added)
1st in passer rating
1st in AY/A (adjusted yards gained per pass attempt, gives extra value for TDs and INTs)
1st in touchdown passes

That means that other QB in the league, while much better than Jordan Love in all of mention "bad rating" categorties are not enough efficient in scoring the points - you will not win the games if you do not score more points than your opponent, no matter if you are in the top 5 in these categories:
- turnover-worthy play rate
- passing yards
- PFF grade (very importnt LOL - maybe for moral victories)
-20+ deep accuracy rate
- completion percentage
- CPOE (30th in expected completion %)
- drop-adjusted accuracy (62.0%)
- big-time throw rate

So, so far so excellent. The only problem is that many of those incompletions (at least 60%) were on his receivers...

Go Pack Go!

I'll leave the stats to those who live and die by them, and stick to what matters most, what I see being achieved and failed on the field, with the result being more the justification for either. I never give credit for a TD pass on a ball flipped behind the LOS in lieu of handing it off. It does skewer the stats for manipulation.

There are garbage time stats acquired by losing teams late, and there are garbage stats achieved to get you the lead that is lost to garbage play that produces a loss.

Loves' first half stats are meaningless if the second half wipes them out with a loss.

Talk stats when the ones that matter are applicable to winning against teams with good QBs and Coaches.

You're starting to sound like the Revised Standard Version of Stockholder. Just kidding.

You promised to take this approach to the season and are sticking to it. More power to you.

I'm just trying to have fun with this season and will give this team great latitude. The coaches, not so much.

Everyone can enjoy the season (or not) in their own way.

Sorry, not buying that. It does not matter when a QB succeeds if he does. Not even Rodgers was metronomic throughout games. A lot depends on what others are calling and doing in both sides. QBs aren’t solely responsible for outcomes. Last week should remind you of that. As should the impact of the D in Rodgers first year. If you expect Love to be going out and winning games single handedly at this point, you are deluded in terms of history and probably haven’t watched the offense being called either.

Love is off to a great start, but this week will be tougher and it will take a season to judge his play as he settles, teams adjust to him and our catchers gain experience or return. In the end, the win loss record means very little, as Rodgers’ didn’t in 2008. If Love continues at his current level, we should all be delighted. We will have a decent starter. We’ve yet to see if he’s a guy that can win games on his own and carry a team, but we were were very unlikely to this year, let alone over 2 games, particularly with the inexperience around him.

If you want garbage stats, you will find them at the back end of games long lost. Look at Fields in week one versus our back ups, Cousins last week versus a prevent D and backups. Oddly, Love hasn’t had those opportunities, which emphasizes why you are wrong. First halves, quarters performances in football are never garbage stats.

As much as you imply that I put the loss on Love, I didn't, but his lack of good play late, whether a bi-product of other variables, cannot be dismissed through the manipulation of stats.

His lack of good play late is as much in the calling, run blocking and Dillon. But let’s be clear, to expect him to overcome that adversity in the last drive is to expect a miracle. Rodgers too 2 years before he found a way to pull such rabbits out of a hat, and he had very experienced and competent catchers. He also was by then an acknowledged franchise QB. If Love gets there then eureka! He’s not yet and so such expectations or evaluations based in them are rooted in unrealistic assumptions and expectations. The success rate across the league for 2 minute drills is currently at an all time high, but under 20%

What play did he make to help keep the ball away from Atlanta in the 4th quarter? How many games will be acceptable for not producing plays when needed to secure a win or prevent a loss? Yes, it's early in the season, but hope based on flawed deducing is unacceptable. Stats are a flawed deduction, especially when used for defense of obvious failure.

A flawed deduction used for defense of obvious failure can often occlude transitory near- success, albeit intermittently. To wit, the prolate spheroid cabal with inherently the most accomplished thrower, and hander-offer (signal caller?), will likely out-pace an equal (all things being equal) opponent, even if veteran catchers do not produce plays to prevent a loss (loss prevention) or secure a win. One really never knows, per se.

"First halves, quarters performances in football are never garbage stats."

Especially when the O delivers the Team a 12 point lead during the first 3 quarters to start the 4th. And the D plays uncomplimentary football giving up 3 straight scores to take the lead.

Yes, and ignoring the failed Offensive output to secure possession, control the clock, and eliminate the opponents' opportunity. In other words, the Offense, once a lead is obtained, has no responsibility to aid the Defense. Something that so many have screamed about Rodgers (multiple 3 and outs) in a row, and now ignores for the sake of LOVE.

But the difference is that the former is an experienced franchise Qb for 16 odd yrs so he'll be treated or questioned as such where as Love is just the Starting Qb his first yr with very minimal exp right?

I didn’t realize we were discussing Love as a Hall of Famer. Yes, Taryn, by those standards he’s not measured up. Arguably he’s a little less far off than Rodgers was this time last season, but he’s got a long way to go. If that’s your insight. Go pat yourself on the back for the brilliantly pointless obviousness of it.

Surprising that he has such a high passer rating in spite of a relatively low completion percentage. I think that the low percentage has more to do with not being on the same page as his receivers than it does with inaccuracy. So I'm hoping that will get worked out to some degree as the season goes on. Accuracy needs to improve too, but I don't think it is a huge shortcoming. The bottom line is that Jordan Love's NFL career is off to a great start!

His completion percentage is low, but he's top 10 in yards per attempt and tied for first in TD passes. That does a lot to buoy his rating.

0-4 on yds passes over 20 yds. 2 were wide open probably for TDs. So badly under thrown he got bailed out with PI calls. Throws almost all short passes and still has a low pct. Yeah he has accuracy issues

One was well thrown and the receiver tackled, one was as you describe.

The previous week one long throw was a catcher who has yet to master running into an over shoulder catch (Musgrave) and one was a true overthrow of Toure. I count that at 50%, which is about League average in those.

Love went into this with the most inexperienced group of catchers in decades. We all knew that that would mean incompletions were compounded by both sides. He then barely had Doubs in the first game and hasn’t had Watson yet. If you are surprised by his completion percentages or advanced metrics that aren’t advanced enough to be accounting for that (they don’t) then you shouldn’t be.

No drama here, just a good start to establishing himself.

Well we were playing a better D. We also were missing our best offensive player. It’s a little hard to draw a clear line. We saw love going through progressions and getting yards. So no backwards steps. I think we saw progress from Wicks and Reed. We managed without a run game or much of a catching contribution from RB. I’d say fairly consistent from Love over 2 given the altered circumstances.

Next gen stats are good for keeping people who don't have much to do busy. They can vary significantly based on opponent, game plan, personnel usage and availability, matchups, weather, venue. They work much better for MLB which is a 1 on 1 game played with a bunch of other guys shagging balls.

The stat I care most about is team Ws.
It could be better.
It could be worse.

Ditto. I think it's wins and losses, as counted by points.

Last week, for example.....were the two long PI calls against the Saints added to Love's yardage? Why not? It's about 100 yards.

I'll take 6 TDs and 0 picks and an offense averaging 27.5 ppg after two games. If anybody had told me in May, or July, that Love would start the season like that, I probably wouldn't have believed them.

Where did you come up with 27.5? Am I doing something wrong or is there new math?

It is a team sport, and 31 ppg sounds cooler. It does blow last season away.

I mathed it out as the offense scoring 31 and 7 for the defense. Personally, think the defense should get a 7 point credit for that.

I think an offense that can average 27.5 on the road without the full use of some of their best offensive players is doing pretty well. Now we'll get a home team against the Saints, who haven't scored more than 20 or given up more than 20 in their two games.

After rewatching the game, I think we did really good. We've never started the season with two straight road victories in our history. We didn't turn it over, we managed to finish the game without Jenkins. Many times this summer I pointed out that we were only about 1 injury from starting Newman.....well, that day is here, Week3.

I think that being able to practice and play together is a big plus, and we haven't really had all of our horses saddled up. This is still about winning the division, and if you want to win the division, you have to defend your homefield, and this game against New Orleans is bigger than the game against Atlanta.

Win Sunday, beat the Lions on Thursday. In a week we can be in first place with a 3-1 record.

Mike Wahl notices what many here have: Barry does not match his guys strengths to attack opponent weaknesses. Wahl said our DL guys were better than the Falcons OL but Barry's scheme lost leverage to them. And just a little added space for a guy like Robinson can "shred" you. Right, MLF?

Also, regarding points...Wahl said in the NFL, if you give up 25 points you are probably going to lose. You have "earned" the loss on D. Interesting take.

I believe that there was some extreme positive and some very bad plays. Some extreme positive did not produce points and after some bad plays team still manage to score (of course, if HC decide to let them score ... khm, khm ... FG).

There was few misscalls, or better to say - no calls from referees that cost Packers at least 7 points. Packers lead 7:3, 3:26 in the first Q there was ball in Falcons red zone. Packers were on Falcons 15 yards line, it was 3rd & 6 and Jordan Love throw beautifull pass to Wicks, right to the right end pilon in the corner of the TD zone. Wicks beat his man and defender panicked, grabed Wicks for his left hand and Wicks were not able to catch that ball with one hand. Referee, instead to threw flag showed sign for incomplete pass.

Very good explanation on you tube podcast "QB School" where you can find analyses of all starting QBs during the week. Just type Jordan Love QB School and you will be able to see explanations and all good and bad about QB plays.

Then there are other people on here in-the-know who think Leatherhead is an idiot. Just what I heard.

Not sure what any of that has to do with comparing the Bear's incompetent organization with GB's, which was the point of the original post. Just sayin'...

I was talking about football until you butted in. You're right...you are obsessed.

The offer still stands to call me Princess to my face, but we all know how that'll play out. Is that pretend warrant still active in New Mexico...lol.

Go try and play tough guy with other folks on here. I'm not interested in false bravado and hot air.

You are the master at this. The one you threw yesterday was a masterpiece. I think of a thousand comebacks and reject them all because they aren't good enough. Ultimately, it always comes down to what we choose to believe.

Your wordsmithery is exceptional. Kudos.

The Bears have categorically denied any raid on their premises and it looks like that may indeed be merely rumor. The FBI is just saying it doesn’t comment on any activity or lack of it.

Rapoport is stating that no reputable source has been able to confirm any raid of Williams house at this point. It apparently appeared as a rumor after Williams resigned yesterday having been absent for unknown reasons for a week.

Williams has said only this “I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family. I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again.”

Of course it could be illegally impersonating a football team across state lines is finally being addressed.

I wonder if a good part of the problem in Chicagoland is drafting players like this (per ESPN):

"My goal this week is just to say F it and go out there and play football how I know to play football," Fields said. "That includes thinking less and just going out there and playing off of instincts rather than so much, say, info in my head, data in my head."

His instincts are bad. Just a terrible excuse for a QB.

If you have a few minutes, see what JT O'Sullivan has to say about what is being asked of Fields. Start at the 4:05 mark. I didn't watch the entire 90+ minutes, but it sure sounds as if the artist formerly known as Packers QB Coach Luke Getsy isn't helping in his current OC role:

The second play is what happens to Desmond Ridder if Gary maintains containment on the Ridder roll-out/TD run.

Im glad you mentioned this. I have no loyalty to Getsy so theres no bias here but id be willing to bet the current direction of their offense has been directed by the front office. Ryan Poles came from KC where he watched Mahomes carry them for years with a high flying pass game. It only took Getsy a few games last year before he scrapped the installed offense and replaced it with a Greg Roman-like run heavy rpo type offense. And it worked pretty damn well. Then the Bears traded for Claypool and Moore and it became apparent Poles is trying to duplicate what he had with the Chiefs. I might be wrong, but I highly doubt Getsy up and scrapped something that actually worked. Pretty sure that decision was made by Poles. I'll forever be grateful for the Bears immaculate ability to continually find incompetent general managers.

Favre recounts a story, which Ty Detmer confirms was a serious request for an explanation, of the following serious exchange during a team
meeting:

“"Finally, I said, 'I just gotta know.' So I said, 'Ty, I gotta ask you a question.' And Ty was about as goofy as I was.

"He says, 'What's that?'

"I said, 'What's a nickel defense?'

"He gets real quiet. He says, 'Are you serious?'

"'Yeah, I'm serious.'

"He says, 'Well, they basically take out a linebacker and bring in a DB.'

"I said, 'That's it?'

"He said, 'That's it.'

"I said, 'Who gives a s--t?' He admitted to not knowing coverages for years. It doesn’t matter if you are really good I guess.””

I guess if you are good it doesn’t matter, but Favre was and Fields isn’t. There’s more similar anecdotes on this theme here. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ty-detmer-confirms-brett-favre-had-no...

Got to admit, I loved watching Favre as a QB, and somehow that the world was crazy enough that it worked.

Probably borderline blasphemous around here but Favre might look a lot closer to Fields these days if he wasn't any more studious than he was back then. Players are faster and coverages much more complex than 30 years ago. If you look at the usage of nickel and dime it's been on an uptick for decades but took a big jump around 2013.

That's not to say he still wouldn't be fun to watch, just more frustrating.

The difference between Favre and Fields is that despite Favre having no real mental mastery over the game, he still took his drop and fired the ball on time and with confidence regardless if he was throwing to the right guy or not. Fields looks like his head is spinning which is slowing him down in his dropback and his ability to get rid of the ball on time. It just wasnt a problem Favre ever had whether he knew what he was doing or not.

Favre had the gift of reading a field and a great arm. Favre instinctively read players not book formations. If he’d been studious, goodness knows what he could have been, but he just knew where to go instinctively (usually). That’s a very very rare talent, that I don’t see in Fields.

I just like the story and the mention of the Fields comment triggered it.

He was fun to watch for a while. But when he was throwing our seasons away it wasn't fun. And that started in about 2001, and ended in 2007.

It is funny. So there's been a big jump in the use of nickel and dime. I wonder why? Maybe they decided that defending the pass was more important.? But everybody knows the key to success is stuffing the run, so why would all these highly paid and experienced professionals do this?

If I were to attempt to ascertain the importance of said stats in the course of human events (the 2023 NFL season therein) , a modicum of information wherein the offending offense missed blocks, the droppage of catchable balls, s’mores, nacho cheese dorito stained fingertips would reveal the munchies not seen before by many (unless the vintage Pac-Man tourney on an Atari 2600, not to be confused with a rather “flash in the pan” strong safety) imbued with essential oils (which begs the question, what’s the deal with UNessential oils? Are they the bastard stepchildren in the oil community?) for the ultimate, deep dish prize for all, so help me god.
