Joe Barry likely to miss Cardinals game due to positive Covid test

The Packers could turn to Jerry Gray to call defensive plays on Thursday night in Arizona.

From NFL Network:

Barry will need two negative tests before he is able to re-join the team. In the meantime, expect Matt LaFleur to lean on Jerry Gray, who has been a defensive coordinator and indeed interviewed for the job that eventually went to Barry, to be a primary defensive play caller on Thursday night.

He was on the sidelines interacting with a bunch of players.

Yikes!

But he and the other coaches are vaccinated. Maybe it’s just a false positive.

The overwhelming majority of the team is vaccinated, but break through cases do happen.

Yes breakthrough case do happen - but you need to be close to somebody who has it in order to catch it. So the questions that needs to be asked - where were you? - and that is sometimes done by what is called contact tracing. Now I wonder if that is being done. And if most of the team is vaccinated than the likelihood of them catching it from a vaccinated person while still there is less likely than if those players ( and staff ) were not vaccinated.

But now timing is such that this could ripple as a result of protocols

If I'm not mistaken, the Packers are taking DAILY covid tests. I am assuming they are vigorously pursuing all avenues of preventative measures as well as going above and beyond in terms of standard contact tracing.

They've got over 100 men and women working in a physical environment, and they know their success depends on remaining healthy with the NFL's covid protocols. They're a multimillion dollar business that exists solely for playing winning football (no owner taking profits). They're already known for being hyper-cautious in terms of player health. They're doing what should be done.

Not a great thing on a short week. As if things weren't stacked against GB already, traveling to Arizona on a short week, losing the DC for the game won't help.

I would assume Gray will be the guy calling plays? It would make the most sense, since he has experience doing it.

They were saving their mojo for this game. Open up the WCO playbook and let it rip. Take no prisoners.

Jerry Gray should have gotten the job in the first place .

Well, I believe after the first game, Gray became the defacto DC until Barry got a handle on personnel on the defensive side. To Barry's credit, the improvement in ILB play is not an accident. Overall, this defense has been a team effort from all sides, from players to coaches. Still, I wish Matt Lafleur had been able to coexist with Mike Pettine for one more year. That would have made things much easier for all concerned in this 'all in' season. (But that's just me :-)

I'm very pleased with how Barry's defense has been performing and growing week to week.

I agree that improvement in ILB play is not an accident as well... but with that being said, I don't have any reason to believe Barry is the difference. The most obvious difference is personnel. ILB has been completely retooled this season, including acquisitions during the season thus far.

If it's talent, that's Gutenkunst and the front office, and I do believe it is a matter of talent. Could be Barry as well, but it's really hard to say without seeing last year's players on the field.

That's all very true Oppy. I not as hard on Barry as he came into a situation very late. I also believe that his coaching a veteran group in the ILB is the difference in performance level of said group. The Packers are still running for the most part the Pettine scheme. The main difference is the extra DL lineman freeing up Clarke to play more DT, and having a veteran ILB like Campbell to play cover. He has been excellent this year.

Giving up over 400 yards to Washington is unacceptable, if those rare stops in the red zone weren’t made this game could have been a win for Washington, a lot of rushing yards given up the last 2 games.

This isn’t a great D, but it’s not a bad one either, playing without 3 or 4 of their best players. I don’t like Barry’s disinclination to blitz, But overall, Barry has surpassed my admittedly low expectations without the personnel I expected to be our best sources of hope.

How many Kirk Cousins are on the Packers? Apparently we were only at 85% back in July - hopefully we are well over the league target of 90% - Are all the coaches vaccinated and that includes Barry??. I know that players in the NHL are testing positive even though they are fully vaccinated. There are only one or 2 players in the whole league that are not vaccinated ie Bertuzzi of the Wings. I like what Davidson of the Columbus team did - you dont get fully vaccinated you dont play for the Blue Jackets and you cant get into our rink and nobody else gets into the rink - fans or staff unless they are fully vaccinated. This is not political nor about personal freedom - it is about protecting yourself, your family, your teammates, the team's staff and the general public including your fans. It doesnt hurt and its free.

I’m wondering what happened to all the college stadium super spreaders that Fauci warned us about? It’s a choice not a mandate although I’m vaccinated it was my choice actually got my second shot today .

Certain businesses make it a mandate. And apparently legally they have that right - to protect their employees etc etc. I too have both my shots and just received my flu shot for this upcoming flu season since mask wearing has declined. My issue has always been that I not only dont want to give it to a family member, I dont want to have to hide in my basement until this blows over and I think that my medical condition makes me vulnerable to ending up hospitalized and I hat hospitals. I am really happy we defeated the WFT because of the lack of respect that those players have shown Rivera as he fought off cancer and is susceptible and they lead the league in not being vaccinated.

Adams out as well. That’s not good playing the Cardinals on a short week. At least we will have more excuses if we lose.

Well, if it ripples through the team, I suppose this week is the one where playing backups makes the least net difference (Rodgers needs a week of though if so).

Damn already we are one of worst hit team injury wise and now this. With out All pro receiver, we already dont have our no.1 cb adn no.1 edge rusher and no defensive coordinator.
