Jermichael Finley's Mystery Visit Unveiled as the Patriots

The free agent tight end took a visit to New England this past Friday.

The mystery team tight end Jermichael Finley visited this past Friday has been unveiled as the New England Patriots, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.

It made sense all along that it was the Patriots, a team that has requested anonymity in the past.

Finley's visit came just days after a trip to Green Bay, during which he visited with the medical staff of the Packers to check on his surgically-repaired neck after bruising his spinal cord this past season.

The Patriots allowed Finley to leave town without a contract, so it remains to be seen how much interest they have in him. Perhaps they were waiting until after the June 1 deadline, so he would no longer count in the compensatory draft pick equation.

As a free agent, Finley is allowed to take as many visits as he pleases. With any team, being signed hinges upon a team clearing him.

UPDATE: Ed Werder of ESPN added to the Finley narrative during an appearance on SportsCenter Tuesday:

If two quality teams pass on him, it should be a good indicator that Findley is not what the Packers need either.
The idea of him signing a one year show us deal is stupid. Move on Packers. I think the coaches prefer people who know the system versus training new people. Sounds like a lazy approach or the people we have are not quality fill in's?

"I think the coaches prefer people who know the system versus training new people."

Sorry, that's silly. The Packers are always one of the youngest teams in the league due to their reliance on their draft and develop philosophy. This means they have a bunch of new, young players to teach every summer.

"The Patriots didn't allow Finley to leave town without a contract…”

Wait, what? This implies that he signed with the Patriots, i.e. “you can only leave if you sign with us". Surely that’s not what you meant to say?

I'm working on negotiating an insurance policy that will pay me $10 million if I never play a down in the NFL.

Premium is $1 million per year for the next 20 years.

Sounds like a good deal to me.
