It’s Time to Forgive Packers HOF Inductee Greg Jennings.

At the time, in January of 2011 after Super Bowl XLV, it would have been an absurdity to think that many fans would have disowned Greg Jennings. Aside from the two TD catches and what Aaron Rodgers referred to as the “throw of his life” on the 3rd and 10 late in the game, Greg’s emotion after the final pass was broken up and his legitimate sparkle after the game in his post game interview stick with us. Jennings was one of the very best to Carry the G. That is, until he decided to put it down.

After the 2012 season, he was a free agent. He wanted a second non-rookie-deal and financial security, obviously, as so many players do. But as we’ve learned time and time again, the Ted Thompson Packers were the ones to let a player walk a year too early than too late. And Greg was no exception. He took the payday to go to Minnesota to gain that security to the tune of $18m guaranteed and $47.5m overall. It’s hard to blame a player for taking the bag, but that often comes with a sacrifice in the legacy. And Greg absolutely suffered that.

But it wasn’t just going to Minnesota. It was the talking-head-Jennings that soured so many fans. In case you were under a rock for much of the mid-2010s, Aaron Rodgers came under scrutiny again and again and again for his “lack of leadership” or “being a bad teammate.” And there were frequent voices making those claims, namely Jermichael Finley. But unlike Finley, Jennings was trying to make it on TV, and of course what makes it on TV all too often is hot takery. And even if what Jennings said about Rodgers was true in his opinion, he knew what he was doing. There ain’t no hot take like an Aaron Rodgers hot take. And Greg made them aplenty.

It wore on us. We follow the team so closely, it’s impossible to avoid the headlines, as regurgitated and unoriginal as they are. There’s no way around it. So with the volume of Jennings’ name coming up every few months with more hot takes, a lot of fans saw it as him being bitter about not getting the contract he wanted from the Packers.  It’s an understandable emotion. If he wanted to go to Minnesota solely to stick it to his former team, I think that’s even a reasonable reaction as well. Greg made his bed and was forced to lie in it.

But as time passed, the sizzle of the Rodgers hot takery began to grow cold. You didn’t hear about it as much, and you didn’t see Jennings around it as often. And then came the announcement to the Packers Hall of Fame. For many, it didn’t conjure up the memories of his Super Bowl touchdowns or emotional post game presser. It dusted up the headlines that frustrated fans. It reminded us that he ended up in Minnesota. The negative was forcing the recency bias.

And that settled, too. And as the ceremony neared and the preseason made the shift to regular season, you began to see more Jennings highlights – and there are plenty. So many of us, myself included at times, forgot about how awesome he was. You don’t score 43 touchdowns for the Green Bay Packers and not be legendary. He was an integral piece in bridging the Favre-to-Rodgers gap, and became one of the reasons Aaron Rodgers was so successful so quickly after taking over. On a lengthy list of the greatest receivers in the history of the Green Bay Packers, Greg’s up there.

And then came his induction speech. We saw the raw, emotional Jennings - you know, the one we saw after the Super Bowl - immediately. A teary-eyed and honest Jennings opened up about his early struggles in Green Bay, his family’s hilarious thoughts on his going to Minnesota, and ultimately touched on his legacy with the team. It was in all honesty, a beautiful speech. It was personal and transparent. It was everything we remembered about Greg prior to 2013.

Jennings finished with some strong words about “appreciation.” And in that spirit, it’s time to fully appreciate Greg Jennings and everything he did to bring the Lombardi back home. It’s time to appreciate the game-winner in Denver. It’s time to appreciate the big catches in the Big Game. It’s time to appreciate the guy who put the team on his back, doe. It’s time to forgive Greg Jennings and focus on one of the best to ever play for the Green Bay Packers.

It seems to me Jennings used his animosity towards Rodgers to further his own brand. Maybe he has come to grips with his giant ego, I don’t know him, I don’t know Rodgers, but I think Jennings owes the team an apology. Then again, maybe this is all just business and useful for generating clicks.

Was really disappointed in him felt like he was scorned. The Packers did offer him a deal at one point. Hard to forget he deserved the HOF but did not carry the G and certainly with it the affection of the fan base.

So true, and as long as we're discussing colonoscopy prep, most of Jennings' HOF speech reminded me of ingesting magnesium citrate. It's good to see Greg still on-brand with the Greg Jennings Show starring Greg Jennings and Greg Jennings' message from the Sky Daddy who has a plan for us all if we will only unlock it like Greg Jennings did. Be. Like. Greg!

I always keep a mental album of players who wore the green and gold as a family album. Little Jennings is not, and will never be, in that album. Family always stick together and anyone with even an ounce of class do not take parting shots. He deserves to be known as the Viqueen he is

I remember Greg Jennings's critical catch on a 3rd and 10 late in 4thQ in the Super Bowl that enabled the Packers to retain possession in a tight game (3 point lead). I remember earlier in the game how Jennings emphatically told Rodgers, while on the sideline, that the Steelers were dropping him on End Zone corner routes. On the next series in the fourth quarter he ran that route for an easy touchdown.

Yeah Greg can be a crybaby at times who can play the victim card, but that does not mean we should overlook all his outstanding contributions to the team during his years in Green Bay. Don't care about his whining. He was a great player and teammate while playing for the Packers and that is why he earned the right to enter the GBP HOF.

I also understand why many people on this site do not like and will never forgive Greg for his words and actions after leaving the Packers. I see that same dislike and disrespect by some members of this site against Aaron Rodgers because he called out local members of the media who turned on him when he said he was "immunized". All of the media automatically assumed that meant he was "vaccinated" because they did not understand that there was any other accepted means of being immunized other than by being vaccinated. In their eyes, it is his fault for misleading them, preying on their ignorance of the term "immunized" and did not voluntarily offering details of how he achieved some degree of immunity by means other than vaccination.

Bad Aaron. Bad, bad Aaron. How dare he. What a terrible person he is by choosing not to be vaccinated when the whole world knows that vaccination is the only means of getting immunized and avoid spreading the disease. (Just ask Jill how that narrative worked out).

Greg Jennings earned the right to enter GBP HOF based on his performance on the field. Everything else is noise of no consequence.

A lie is a lie.

However, when you try to be sneaky and manipulative in your deception so you can play the "I technically never lied" game?

Yeah, that's actually a shadier method of deceit that is indicative of less moral character than your run-of-the-mill liar.

I'm still shocked most Packers fans haven't figured out Rodgers has been playing the manipulative/double-speak lying game during his pressers going back YEARS. He's a total shit-bag.

Jennings was a great player for the Packers, but like Favre will be remembered just as much for being a selfish jerk. I appreciate what he did as a player, but in no way do I look up to him as a human being. He will always be a complete POS in my book. I made a mistake purchasing a Favre jersey, made another purchasing a Jennings jersey. Two jerseys in the trash and I finally learned my lesson and bought a Woodson!

The way i remember it, much of Jennings angst towards Rodgers was rooted in the fact that Jennings was angry that Rodgers didn't fight enough with the Packers, to keep Jennings around.

It's true that Jennings went "on tour" to various sports talk shows to speak about his angst with Rodgers/Packers and like a lot of you, i believed he used that to parlay into a career in broadcasting.

I don't think Jennings addressed the issues he had, dragging the Packers through the mud. Without that, i'm like most Packer fans, he can kick rocks.

What f'ing bs. The first 98% of his self-congratulating speech was about himself and his family, the same family he couldn't wait to get out of Green Bay and move to Minnesota. Good for you and your family. Go join the Vikings HOF, if they even have one.

This a-hole did squat after he left GB and two HOF QBs throwing him the ball, other than trash the organization and city that welcomed him. "This is the one place I didn't want to be drafted". Even after the organization honors him, he has to get in one of his passive aggressive digs. What a douche. Good riddance.

I think you missed the message if your takeaway was Jennings' statement that "This is the one place I didn't want to be drafted" was a final dig at Green Bay. Jennings talks quite a bit about how Green Bay and the Packers- the organization, the people, the players, and the community- made him and his young family feel welcome and at home.

I didn't care for a lot of the things Jennings has said over the years, but there's bigger douchebags that have said and done worse in regards to the Packers that still strap it up and trot out onto the field every sunday.

A douchebag is a douchebag I guess. Then again, they let Chumra in after he tried to force himself on his friend's high school daughter, so I guess Jennings is lower on the douchebag ladder.

I wouldn't have had a problem with his "This is the one place I didn't want to be drafted" comment if he would have followed it up with..."but it turned out to be a great experience and my family loved it here", but instead went on to talk about what a great player he was. Based on other things he said about the city after he left, I still think it was a passive aggressive dig. We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

I will say that he appears to be a very good and devoted family man and has never been involved in even a hint of scandal off the field, as far as I know. So, he certainly deserves a ton of credit for that.

I was a huge Greg Jennings fan when he was a Packer, with his great play and beaming personality.
He was deserving of co-MVP with Aaron Rodgers for the big win against the Steelers in the Super Bowl.
***
I really didn't follow all that closely his move to the Vikings, or his post-career remarks about Rodgers and the Packers.
None of the comments by fans above have educated me as to what he said that was so bad.
***
What I know about Rodgers is that he was ready to throw away the 2021 season for the Packers, holding out on the team and holding the fans hostage while he hosted Jeopardy and vacationed in Hawaii.
When Rodgers did finally come back right before training camp, he trashed the front office as cold-hearted toward players over the years -- with seemingly flimsy evidence.
Then, he announced publicly that he didn't like to play in preseason games in a way which seemed to challenge the head coach.
Rodgers proclaimed that he could get the offense in top form just from practices, but then seemed to forget all about those words when the Packers had a meaningless game at the end of the regular season against the Lions -- with the top seed in the playoffs clinched and an opportunity to rest the starters.
This time, Rodgers announced publicly his eagerness to play against the Lions -- again appearing to preempt his head coach in making such a decision -- despite having had 16 prior games in the regular season to hone the offense, and while telling us for weeks prior that his injured pinky toe threatened to keep him out of action. (Even if the toe was supposedly healed, it remained as a lesson as to how easily a quarterback in the NFL can be hurt and sidelined.)
In the ensuing playoff game against the 49ers -- as often noted by me, but seemingly never addressed by Rodgers to this day as a matter of accountability -- he made one of the worst gaffes in the history of the NFL playoffs by failing to pass to a wide-open Allen Lazard for what would have likely been the winning score.
Following this inexplicable blunder for the ages, Rodgers again seemed to hold out on the Packers in the offseason until he was given a massive new contract.
***
So, in conclusion, I don't know what Jennings said and did to anger Packers fans such as those who have commented above. Maybe it was serious, maybe not.
However, it seems what Rodgers has put the Packers and us fans through is far more blameworthy for having been done during his career in a way that severely threatens the proper functioning of the team. (He also seems to undermine his head coach in the running of the offense.)
Rodgers has basically turned his back on Packers management, his teammates, and us fans unless he gets his arrogant way.
How is that carrying the "G" -- unless it stands for greed and grasping and grandiosity -- and how does that bode well for the Packers winning another title under his pathetic leadership?

Well, the contrast between the two is striking, in terms of character and winning.
When we've had the stellar professionalism of Bart Starr as a precedent, why do we settle for the shallow shenanigans of Aaron Rodgers persistently?
To fix a problem, one has to first acknowledge it. Otherwise, the past couple of seasons of playoff misery for Packers fans is likely to continue.
Rodgers may be a superstar for individual awards and fantasy football, but for the Packers to win another title we need him to be more of a true Starr.

Jennings, a great intermediate to deep threat, signed with a team starting Christian Ponder at quarterback. That's what one calls a bad career move. With a better QB, perhaps he gets a third year on that big deal he signed when he left GB. Maybe it didn't matter as he was 32 in his last year in Miami and couldn't produce with Ryan Tannehill at QB.

It’s like this I think, we’re all just imperfect human beings. When you are a “star” at something you go under the microscope. Suddenly everything that is nothing matters. No one cares or would make a big deal about what I think about BG or drafting Jordan Love or Aaron Rodgers’ leadership or Greg Jennings or any number of subjects. Why should we care about what they think? Jennings was a great player while he was in GB. But two guys with big egos and easily hurt feelings really shouldn’t captivate us so much. If it was your cousin and some guy he worked with you wouldn’t really care.

I never followed the post-Packers-career drama that closely, so I'm happy that a great player during his green-and-gold days was honored.

To me, it's very close between Jennings and Adams as to who was the most talented Packers receiver over the last 20-ish years. I know that Jordy also had a terrific career, but I think Jennings had better all-around tools.

What I really find interesting here is that very few of the posters are ready to forgive. And many of those porters are claiming that they are truly Christians, the faith based on forgiveness for people mistakes.

Also, it is very interesting how many posters do not want to forgive Jermichael Finley and Greg Jennings their estimation how big DIva is Aaron Rodgers. I will not repeat Swisch comment, but he summarized how good leader is Aaron Rodgers, aka Diva.

If you can forgive Brett Favre his Minnesota time, why you can not forgive the same situation to Jennings? Or it hurts more because he reminded you on your "God" (BF) first actions in the past when he wanted to play for Minnesota so badly that he played for Jets just one season and pushed himself to Minnesota, much more committed to that move than Greg Jennings?

What Greg Jennings gave to the team on football field is more important than what he said after he left Green Pack. Same is worth for Brett Favre.

And, I'm aware of that, it will be applicable when AR will be accepted in GB Hole of Fame.

So, my fellow Christians, forgive and leave the hate out of yourself...

One can forgive and still vow to never let the same thing happen to them again and shield that event by not placing the same amount of trust in the original offender.

He must be glad he got a ring in GB, because he surely was not going to get one, in minnesota. BTW, I feel the same way about Brent. Now look at him. Good luck Greg. Great WR skills and production.

He is deserving of the Packer HOF. To leave a Packer out with his outstanding production would seem petty and small.

However...this "forgiveness demand"? Forgive him for what? To be forgiven, you must be contrite, apologetic and ASK for it.

When has Jennings asked Packer Nation to forgive him for anything? Certainly not in his HOF speech when he could have apologized to great applause: "Look Packer Fans, I said some things in Minnesota I said in the heat of the moment. I shouldn't have said them. I apologize if I came off as an ungrateful Packer. I am not. Please forgive me because this team and the fans are the best!"

But no, too proud.

Instead he has let his premeditated, self centered attack on Rodgers and the Packers stand.

Just how do you forgive someone who doesn't want it? It does not work that way.

The reality that everybody seems to forget, is that much earlier during his contract year, the Packers offered him a higher contract. He was feeling disrespected by the Packers because he thought their offer was low. So he waited for free agency and didn’t get an offer anywhere near what the Packers I had offered. So he went to the Vikings for less and proceeded to hate on the Packers. Nothing about the speech made me think that it was anything except another place for Greg Jennings to talk about Greg Jennings. I’m sad because I do love to listen to former Packers, but I just cannot stand this bloviated ego.

Yes he was offered more and declined as he was seeking a larger contract, but there is more to that story. He had multiple injuries that year and the Packers new offer was less than the Vikings after the year. Bob Mcgin from the Milwaukee Journal stated his sources said that the Vikings offered 1million more per year. I suspect his 18 M guarantee was also bigger, which was quite large at the time.

I've had literally zero interest in what Jennings said after he left Green Bay. Why would I waste time listening to his Packer HOF speech?

Nothing he's said, or will say, affects my life in the least.

I could NOT care less what players do or say off the field for the most part, especially when it's negative. I care what's going to happen in the next game when it comes to football and that's about it. Oh, and the delicious memories like Rasul Douglas's wave to the Cardinal's fans after snagging the game winning interception after being signed off of their practice squad. That shit'll get me to buy a jersey (and one for my Dad too).

I remember when Greg said that the Packers “brainwashed” him. Now that he's in front of a large crowd at Lambeau Field that has conveniently changed into the Packers having “legacy, culture, and championship pedigree.” Hmmm....

His speech was almost believable. Jennings literally just said the other week he thinks the Vikings are going to win the NFC North over the Packers and you're telling us we need to sing his praises? “This team in purple does not fear Aaron Rodgers and his supporting cast.” Get outta tahn with this crap, Gregory. VikingsWire even has an article titled “Greg Jennings believes in the Minnesota Vikings” LOL.

Sure, there are some great moments in Packer history involving Greg Jennings. I can appreciate those. But when your entire post NFL career is based on publicly talking crap about your former teammate and team, I can't get on board with that. Mr.Hot-Take can take a hike.

It's funny how GB was the only place Jennings didn't want to end up, when it turns out GB is the only place he was ever successful. That must be a hard pill for Greg's sister to swallow.

I can understand the ego's of NFL players and the need to be in the spot light but not only did Jennings bash Packer players and the team in general many forget he ripped the community and even the local education system in reference to his children, that crossed the line for any support I would give him in regards to the Packers HOF.

I have given this a lot of thought, and waited this long to really reflect on it.

F him!

My initial reaction remains the same. No player, let alone a former Packer who received all the accolades, and at times adulation and of course the crazy $$$, should have any need to badmouth the team and organization the way he has. It's just shameless and classless. The same with Z. Both phonies.
