Hot Topics and Burning Questions from Lambeau

This week's bye got me thinking about a variety of hot topics.

The First 10 Games:

The Packers had the opportunity to rest and recharge this week after a hard fought 24-16 win over the Carolina Panthers which saw their record improve to 8-2.  Despite all of the pessimism in Packer Nation (maybe it's just my followers) the Packers are a legitimate playoff contender that could really surprise some teams and make some noise.  The bye week comes at a great time (after week 10) and will allow some key players to get some much-needed rest, and others like Kenny Clark, to finally get healthy for the final 6 games of the season.  Overall, this team has played great and has been a pleasant surprise, I cannot wait to watch the next 7+ plus games of the season.  Yes, that means I believe the Packers are a lock for the playoffs.

  • The MVP Cases of Aaron Jones and Aaron Rodgers:

Through the first ten games of the season, Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones have emerged into the conversation for 2019 NFL MVP.  In my opinion, both are still a long shot to win the award, as there have been some incredible individual performances throughout the season, but here is how they both stack up through ten games against their contemporaries:

1. Aaron Jones: 135 rushing attempts, 589 yards, 4.4 yards per attempt, 11 touchdowns, 35 receptions, 354 yards, 10.1 yards per reception, 3 touchdowns; (943 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns)

The Competition:

A. Christian McCaffrey 1,385 scrimmage yards, 14 touchdowns

B. Dalvin Cook 1,415 scrimmage yards, 10 touchdowns

C. Nick Chubb 1,177 scrimmage yards, 6 touchdowns

2. Aaron Rodgers: 64.8% completion percentage, 2,718 yards, 17 touchdowns (18 total touchdowns) and 2 Interceptions

The competition:

A. Russell Wilson 68.5% completion percentage, 2,737 yards, 23 Touchdowns (26 Total Touchdowns) and 2 Interceptions

B. Deshaun Watson 70.2% completion percentage, 2,432 yards, 18 Touchdowns (23 Total Touchdowns) and 5 Interceptions

C. Lamar Jackson 65.9% completion percentage, 2,036 yards, 15 Touchdowns (21 Total Touchdowns) and 5 Interceptions

D. Patrick Mahomes 66.3% completion percentage, 2,626 yards, 18 Touchdowns and 1 Interception (8 games)

This is Russell Wilson's award to lose, I believe he is the best overall player this year, but I think Mahomes has the best betting odds.

  • Kenny Clark's Contract:

With Kenny Clark starting to return to form and getting healthier by the day, the Packers should really think about making a power play and extending him during the bye week.  I know this would be an unlikely scenario but it could potentially save the team some valuable cap space heading into the offseason.  The Packers with this 8-2 start have established themselves as one of the NFL's win now teams, but there are still a few key holes to fill to put them over the top.  These positions could cost them premier draft capital and cause them to sign one more high-end free agent.  Capitalizing on Kenny Clark's ordinary start to the season would be a business decision in a sport driven by the salary cap.

  • Signing Colin Kaepernick:

I know a lot of you "get off my lawn" guys are going to "click out" of this article now.  However, if you follow my logic here you may jump on board with the Packers giving Kaep a look.  For full disclosure, I believe that any player that can potentially help upgrade the roster, who complies with the law and the NFL league guidelines should be considered for a roster spot.  In this case, I believe that Colin Kaepernick could provide the Packers with a highly explosive option in the offense as well as the special teams game.  Remember a few years ago when the Taysom Hill cult formed in Green Bay? If I remember correctly, all of you were left in despair when Hill didn't make the 53 man roster and were further pissed off when Sean Payton turned him into a tremendous asset for the Saints.  Now, I want you to imagine Colin Kaepernick in a Taysom Hill like role in Matt LaFleur's innovative offense.  That could be a very interesting proposition.  Kaep can still pose a threat in the RPO and wildcat in specific packages while providing an extra wrinkle in the wide receiver screen game and jet sweep game.  On special teams, he could provide an option in the return game, pose as a threat or decoy for a trick play, and give the Packers another gunner with speed.  Above all, Colin Kaepernick, as unpopular as this will sound, is an upgrade over Tim Boyle.  If the market is right, the Packers should explore offering the hometown boy a team friendly contract.

  • Projected Results for the Rest of the Season:

@ San Francisco: 28-27 Loss

@ New York Giants: 35-17 Win

VS. Washington: 42-7 Win

VS. Chicago: 24-14 Win

@ Minnesota: 27-17 Loss

@ Detroit 28-20 Win

Final Record: 12-4, NFC North Division Champs, #2 or #3 Seed in the NFC.

Kaep's ship has sailed. He is not as explosive of an athlete as Hill at this point.

The issue with Kaep isn't that he isn't one of the best 40 or so QBs in the world (he is), it's that he's not good enough to justify the baggage and circus that comes with him.

Allow me to add...Rodgers is not handing the ball to another QB and this is more likely or strongest reason that Taysom Hill isn't on the Packers. Could Rodgers have a different mindset now, maybe but I doubt it especially when he's trying to prove he can run any offense...as in MLF's for now.

I'm very tired of the romanticizing of Taysom Hill. Dude's built like a RB. He's not a QB. He's not used as a QB. He's a gimmick player. At this point OBJ (a WR) and Andy Lee (a P) have thrown as many passes in 2019 as Taysom HIll...and that's with Drew Brees sitting for 6 games. That being said, completely different body types (Kaep being long and lanky) and a lack of training camp to get Kaepernick into positions he's never played in he NFL make him a non-starter for a Hill kind of role.

At this point, Kaepernick IS likely the best QB available on the market. His baggage is a problem. But if ARod were to get injured and miss 4-6 games on a team that is positioned to compete for a first round bye, I don't think Tim Boyle is any better prepared to lead this team.

Kaep played on an absolutely horrible team and threw 16 td's to 4 ints when he played last. He also got a huge pay out for collusion which he's not able to disclose as part of the settlement with the NFL. It's too bad the whole kneeling thing became political when it wasn't. It's not as if he was rioting in the streets or burning flags. He did get people talking and that was the intent, but the NFL and owners coluted and paid him a ton of cash.

Bringing Kaepernick into this article has proved you right about 'clicking out' but I was able to hold back the vomit long enough to say....Kaepernick will not be a Packer,he won't help and it would take about 2 weeks before he starts spouting crap of political injustice and why he isn't getting any snaps in place of Rodgers....Got to go,,,my hands are full.

Per Adam Schefter, an NFL executive at the workout said Colin’s arm talent was “elite” and he threw well. From the footage I saw and have seen over the last year, he can definitely play, and start in this league. I wouldn’t get disjointed over suggesting a very specialized and limited role with the Packers.

I am one of the people who turned the TV off during the non stop anthem crap (it was easy because I just bought a house with a thousand projects and the Packers were awful after Rodgers was hurt), there will never be another Packer game on in my house if that piece shit is on this team.

Taking emotion out of this, you don't take the ball out of Rodgers hands for gimmick plays, the oppressed person who is the face of a company using Chinese child labor himself proved yesterday his heart isn't in the game, but in promotion, the last thing a rookie head coach needs to deal with is this train wreck of a media shitshow, oh and Mr Victim was actually a terrible QB when he last played.

Actually, his numbers the last year he played for SF (2016) were as good as his second year as a full-time starter in SF when they won 12 games.

Keep in mind, I'm not advocating for Kaepernick in GB. 2016 was a long time ago in terms of athletes and athletics. I'd rather have facts than hyperbole, though.

I think we win either in SF or MIN. I'd be ecstatic with both. I don't think we lose both. I think this team finishes 13-3 and gets the 2 seed. Although 1, 2, and 5 seeds are all in play for sure.

Go upset city tomorrow.

Based on Garoppolo playing mediocre ball. Based on SF having injury issues.

Based on Cousins and the Vikes playing much better now than they were earlier in the year. Based on the fact that MN is a much better team on their own field and on turf. Based on the fact that the Packers have gone backwards defensively since they last played.

Pretty good basis.

I'm expecting SF to still be a tough game based off their defense. I can see the Packers winning if their offense clicks and their defense can expose Garoppolo.

For MN they are tougher at home but I'm hoking they do what they always have done and choke. The Packers offense is playing better than they did last time they met. MN is dealing with it's own inuries and are thin at CB. It'll be a good test for the Packers.

The MVP discussion similar to the Coach of the Year discussion are irrelevant post season feel good awards for not succeeding in the post-season. Who cares? Win the SB and those other awards fade rapidly into oblivion. We know that Rodgers is a HOFer and that Jones is an excellent RB. Next topic.

Kenny Clark, yes it may be wise to sign him now but it's not a must have issue at this point. It's more of a nice to get done now issue. Maybe Clark and/or his agent want to wait until the season is complete or try FA to see what the market will offer?

Kaepernick, I would not waste my time or salary cap on him. He wasn't very good when he left the league 3 seasons ago. He was a very poor pocket passer and I doubt his legs are the same as they were when he was running all over the place. He's not worth the distraction to a team that is moving in a very positive direction and has made it to 8-2 without him. I would rather have signed a DL or ILB than a mediocre player like Kaeperdunk.

As for the upcoming results MLF got the Packers off to quick starts coming off of both of the mini-bye weeks the Packers had earlier in the season. First against the Viqueens in Week 2 and then against Dallas after the loss to the Eagles on TNF. I hoping/ expecting that he can do the same against SF. Except for the Chargers game the Packers have played well on the road this season against Dallas and the Chiefs, both contending teams.

If the Packers defense can get back to its early season level of tackling and the Packers OL continues its solid play I think that we have a good chance to win in SF. Not taking anything away from SF but aside from the Rams and the Panthers both with 5 wins the 49ers haven't played a very difficult schedule. The best team they have played are the Seahawks and they lost to them at home. The flip side is that the NFL is a week to week league and anything can happen and previous performance does not guarantee future results. So while there are questions whether the Packers are for real or not I think those same questions exists for the 49ers as well at this point. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Clark isn't eligible for free agency after this season. He will be on his 5th-year option in 2020 at a very reasonable price.

However, extending him now puts a signing proration in 2019 and another in 2020, which I'd greatly, tremendously, (keep putting superlatives in) prefer not to do. It would be incredibly dumb.

If Clark got a $20M signing bonus, $4M would count against the 2019 salary cap and another $4M would count March 18, 2020, against the 2020 cap. That means GB's cap space would be cut by $8M instead of by $4M if the Packers wait until after December 29 (IIRC) to extend Clark.

Since I think GB will want as much cap space as possible during free agency next March, GB should wait to extend Clark.

Kaepernick was not very good when he last played regularly. Why do so many of his fans think that after 3 years on the couch he can step in and play better? If they really thought he could be a useful player, bring him in the offseason, watch his progress through OTA's, training camp and the pre-season. That would be a logical way to evaluate your potential back up QB.

The dog-and-pony show this weekend will prove nothing about his abilities or lack thereof.

With regards to the remaining schedule, I am very excited to see it play out. But we should be realistic. The team does not rank in the top 5 offences or defenses. Depending on what metrics you use, at best our offence ranks 6th and the D is 19th. (DVOA by Football Outsiders)

By yardage,
OFFENSE is 17th in yds / game
DEE is 27th !!

I hope that made you feel more confident. And gee, don't the yards and points seem to be correlated? (I know that's too big a word for you to understand)

You didn't list "(b) by points..." you listed by yardage and posted the Packers were 27th, not 28th. That makes your over-reaction to Leatherhead look even worse. And BTW, the Packers are 12th in points surrendered going into Sunday's games.

And now they’re 14 in points per game.

That is very true and I agree. But you need to consider how likely it is the Packers are to continue to get a ton of red zone/goal line stops and turnovers. They've had a disproportionate number of both thru 10 games. It seems to me they are living on borrowed time in that regard. It simply not sustainable.

Nice athlete. No instincts? Played just 11 snaps for Cincy in 2018, but 215 ST snaps. Cincy had some LBs ahead of him, but the Bengals still waived a 3rd round pick (#78) after a single year.

Jefferson played 117 ST snaps for Cleveland, but no defensive snaps in 2019. Cleveland has Schobert in the middle, and he's very good. In fact, I just wrote that I'd rather pay Schobert $10M AAV than Martinez. But Cleveland's other LBs, Mack Wilson and Christian Kirksey, are pretty awful, and Kirksey got hurt after game two.

When will they quite bending over backwards to give that POS media coverage? That’s one of the big problems, of many, with the libtard media, they can’t accept not getting their way and will continue to push Crybaby Kap until they shame some weak willed team to sign him.

wildbill, you forgot to mention how David must hate America and the troops for even suggesting Kaep as an option.

I don't think Kaep is the answer in Green Bay. He deserves a shot to play in the league, but the fanbase here in Wiscossippi would revolt. I have to wonder, though, what Coach Starr and Coach Lombardi would have done with the Kaepernick situation. Starr was the only GM to answer Dave Kopay's letter seeking an opportunity to get into coaching after he came out as gay. And, Lombardi personally felt what ignorance and discrimination do to men.

I think history will be kind to Kaepernick. It's easy to label his work "social justice bs" when you have no skin in the game. I admire his courage.

Kaepernick had two major shortcomings that are critical for success as an NFL quarterback. He lacked accuracy and he was unable to read coverages and performed poorly when the primary receiver was not open. He thrived initially, especially against the Packers with his legs.

David, do you honestly believe Kaepernick has somehow corrected the accuracy problem and magically developed the ability to read defenses? Also, I don't think many football fans think he legs will function as they did years ago. Also, defensive coordinators bottled him up after his initial success running.

Quarterbacks who live on their legs don't last long in this league. (Yes, I sure most of the folks will bring up two of the usual suspects. One current, and one retired. Both had what Kap does not have. Point accuracy. Rodgers, even with some issues with underthrows is the most accurate QB in this league. While the Chargers Rivers is less mobile than Rodgers, he destroyed the Packers secondary with his throws to WR in pattern. Something that only elite QB do like Rodgers. ) Kaepernick failed as an NFL starter in this regard. At this point, Boyle probably is a far better point to point thrower than Kap. ( And who wants sign a major head case outside of Jimmy Jones and Mike Davis, and even they won't touch this guy....:-)

All you so called packers fan, need to remember that he outplayed the packers in two playoff games. Let’s not forget that, that the last time we had a backup play, the packers do squat. This year, the team feels special and feels like it can do something amazing. If this team can improve in anyway, for all you hoping that AB gets signed instead, then why not Kaepernick? You would rather have a pre-Madonna and whiner, then someone that can play a back up role and run threat? Get outta here and realize that we haven’t done nothing since 1996, the last time we signed an out of the box free agent (Andre Rison) that might make a slight difference to help us win another super bowl. I am a packers fan no matter what, if singing a back up quarterback who hasn’t done anything wrong, helps us win that Home state Lombardi trophy, then so be it!!!! I want a super bowl this year and any help is more than welcomed #gopackgo #tillidie

I'm pretty sure we did something in 2010. You can't compare Rison, a regular contributer, to a back up QB / biggest distraction of all time. And you mention the playoff games, i mention them as well. If not for Dom Capers terrible defense, I don't think the old kneeling shitstain has the reputation he has in the NFL. If you seriously think that this turd is just going to step on the field in relief of Rodgers and make a difference, I don't know what else to say

1. MVP
Depends if MVP takes into account your receivers. At times Rodgers had a group of receivers who resembled a practice squad. He should be winning this as its been his best year but voters aren't that deep so he won't.

2. Yes we should pay Clark.

3. Don't have any problems with Kaep. I do however have significant problems with wasting money on a backup QB. Years of neglect of offence means there is not much we can do if Rodgers goes down so money spent on a backup is a waste. So sure on the vet QB fine sign him. Otherwise no.

Boyle is the heir apparent as Packers QB to Rodgers. He has shown he can stand in the pocket and throw deep accurately. If Rodgers goes down I have no problem watching Boyle leading this offense and throw the ball downfield to Adams, MVS, Lazard, Allison and Kumerow.

A back-up QB isn't a need for the Packers right now. esp. one that has a very inflated value of himself. Last time a team wanted to sign him...he wanted starter money.
Green Bay needs for their defense to play together. Pass rush aside, they have to either shut down the run or pass. Right now, they have trouble doing either on a consistent basis. Savage/Alexander have been roughed up a little and may not be 100%. It shows in their play. Maybe Campbell will make a difference meshing the run/pass defense so that they can make stop on third downs.

Signing Kneeler makes about as much sense as the article on here early in the season saying we should resign Nick Perry..... Actually I would take Perry over Kneeler.

Millions of people have arm strength as good as CK. MILLIONS. That does not make them potential NFL QBs.
A 'pretty' practice against nobody proves exactly nothing.
Scripted plays and routes proves precisely nothing since improvising on the field and reading defenses is the opposite of that. That is where CK failed, and failed big time.
Once teams (Outside GB and the idiot Capers) figured out the runs CK became less than a bad backup. BTW bobby douglas had a stronger arm. Arm strength is not particularly relevant even, or especially if you look at Super Bowl Winners. Starr? No. Montana? No. Bob Griese? No. D. L. in Oakland? No. Some one year wonders got lucky with having a "BIG" arm and a team that had all the pieces fall into place. Was D Williams a top qb? Or a lucky guy one year? Same with Flaco. In the list of big arms nobody names Brady.

He was not a top 40 when he lost his job...LOST HIS JOB....LOST HIS JOB TO Gabbert.

Naturally to the CK apologists does this proves the Coach Kelly was a 'racist' as well? That the head coach makes decisions that helps him keep his plush over paid millions per year when he can bash a social movement? that this ONE coach decided to fall on his sword to bail out the NFL? Seriously?

Was/is Kyle S proven to incompetent to evaluate players or who might fit his system. Must he also be racist and willing to break his own team to prove this social point? Did he fall on the sword for the NFL as well? Nobody in the NFL honestly wants to win games? They are all more concerned with keeping Rodger G looking good?

You owe people who read your articles better than this kind of nonsense. Leave your politics and innuendo against others at the door.

If CK gave a better chance to win in SF he would not have been demoted.
