Gut Reactions: Vikings 24 Packers 17

  • The time has come. Fire McCarthy
  • That call on 4th and inches had all the imagination of a wet noodle.
  • You know, the play where the whole game turned.
  • Nice to see EQ make some plays.
  • Don't get me wrong, the personnel group hasn't exactly supplied McCarthy with an abundance of talent. But he has more than enough to win.
  • And he keeps pissing it away.
  • Wish the game plan would have been traveling Alexander with Diggs and doubling Thielen instead of matching Alexander with Thielen.
  • Kenny Clark was held all night.
  • Game on the line and Rodgers delievers two garbage throws.
  • Is he trying to get Mike fired?
  • Tramon Williams should never have been returning punts in the first place.
  • Loved how the Vikinsg went to a fullnback on 3rd and 1. What a concept.
  • The Packers were trying to kill me one 3rd down at a time, on both sides of the ball.
  • Rodgers showed great trust in EQ early by releasing a throw deep downfield before the rookie even turned back out of his break.
  • A drive or two later, he dropped his eyes and reverted to the 2018 version of Rodgers by trying to escape the rush rather than just hitting the shallow crosser whow as wide. open.
  • Seriously, that miss from Rodgers on the sluggo where Adams burned his man like toast is unforgivable.
  • Hey, they still have a 3% chance of making the playoffs.
  • I need a drink.

. One of the most frustrating things that I've had to witness within my life this year is watching the Packers Offensive.... wow

. I'm already looking forward to the draft

. Rodgers is still off, this is concerning

. We are still one of the most injured teams in the league

. I hope there is a way to keep Pettine when MM is released. Give Pettine a few more good players and we will have a great D (need to stay healthy though, sigh)

. Having a new coaching staff next year will mean learning a new system (which isn't ideal) , unless they promote from within. I don't think promoting from within is a good idea, so, Let's get new and take our lumps with regard to a learning curve.

. Reggie Gilbert filled in nicely for Perry as he was just as invisible (basically, so was Fackrell tonight)

. Love Kenny Clark and Alexander

. Unfortunately, it would be best for the Packers to lose the rest of their games so to pick in the top 10 of every round next draft. This team needs more retooling.

. I don't like the Vikings

. What a crappy way to end a great Thanksgiving weekend. Good night Packers compadres

The game is too fast for our slow thinking coach. He could have requested a measurement and stopped the clock at one critical juncture. Instead MM wastes a timeout and goes ballistic. He has his QB hurrying to get plays off to avoid delay of game penalties AND this is when we are down two scores and need all time we can save.

MM still has not told his STs coach to tell the punt receivers to either catch the punt or get the hell out of the area so the football doesn’t bounce irradically and hit you in the chest and becomes a live ball. Every year it happens to the poorly coached Packers STs. This is at least the 2nd time this year. It does not happen to well coached teams. They might have a fumble but they do NOT have poorly coached players in the area of an uncaught punt.

MM is too slow thinking to make wise game decisions. For a $6,000,000 salary I expect more. The good old boys management structure is NOT working. MM fired most of his old coaches and they still pull losses from the jaws of victory? Please get rid of the problem instead of giving him more power. MM is incompetent!

Rodgers looks old. Bags under eyes and doing his best to not toss a pick.
He has been outplayed all year. He has some talented receivers lets give them credit you cant blame it on youth. Many teams would love these young guys on their teams. It a lack in inventiveness, no screen passes, not quick slants, no passes over the middle, its always the 30 yard shit.

Both MM and AR were found wanting. AR needs to play better. Otherwise trade him for a few firsts and seconds.

That contract will be a millstone around the Packers neck for years to come.

Not at all as to the contract. GB would have to eat all those $11.5M signing bonus prorations. AR would be dirt cheap to an acquiring team: just $16.5M cap hit for 2019, and 22M or so in 2020. Which is why we should try to fix the OC and HC before concluding that AR should be traded.

Nobody knows these are talented receivers , they are ROOKIES !!. There is no separation what so ever . Packers have one quality receiver No.17 . One over the hill receiver and the rest are question marks at best .

Once again McCarthy gets it going with Aaron Jones and then pulls him for Williams for an entire series killing all momentum. Meanwhile after taking what the defense gave him and moving the ball downfield for consecutive TD's Rodgers reverts back to holding the ball waay too long while looking waay downfield to make a play his arm just won't seem to agree to do anymore consistently. This team especially offense and special teams are a complete band of dysfunctional garbage posing as an NFL team. After they lose next week to Arizona they may as well play all the rookies and see what they have for next year, as well as playing Kizer and Boyle.

I’m usually in agreement with you Bearmeat, but not here. OL, DL, TE, S, LB, and Edge need upgrades or complete overhaul. Could make a case CB needs a little more help since King can’t stay healthy. This roster needs a lot of help.

RG, TE (depending on Tonyan?), FS (maybe Josh Jackson here?), OLB I'll agree with you. On the whole, that's pretty damn good.

This was a playoff roster mismanaged.

I would say both Guard spots need help, the line has ceded a lot of pressure up the middle. RT is going to be an issue if Bulaga can’t be retained.

TE has Tonyan and Graham under contract beyond this year. Probably need a 3rd guy there.

Both safety spots need addressing. Are you willing to roll with Williams and no future plan there? Josh Jones is athletic but has 0 instincts. Greene, Campbell, Brice?

Edge: nuff said haha.

Martinez has been solid, but the spot next to him has been a turnstile.

Not sure we want to retain Bulaga. I give him marks for digging in with injuries this year but that will only get worse. Have to draft a RT and at least 1 OG. The draf is deep in TEs, so if we can find one that blocks to compliment Tonyan & Graham, that would be beneficial. Then all other picks should be D, certainly 2 x 1st round should be OLB (edge) and then I would get a ILB to release Burke for SS. Recognising you cannot draft in every position of need, I would go FA for FS.

As I have been saying the OL is the root of this team's problems! Yes, MM and AR have been having issues and MM may need to be replaced. But nothing is going to change unless you significantly upgrade the OL. Both guards and a right tackle. When you can't get less than a yard on 2 shots...you got troubles.
The Pack needs an edge, inside backer and both safeties!
After having watched this team and nfl football for 50+ years I know that you never get much out of a rookie WR, DL and DBs. Unless you get a real Blue chipper help is pretty rare, So the Pack needs to go into the FA market big time.

The frustrating this is that this team actually had the most talent of any Packers team since 2014. It should have been more than enough to win the division and make it at least halfway through the NFC playoffs. But because of hideous coaching and Aaron Rodgers clearly playing below the level he can for an extended time, we are where we are.

I am now officially calling the season over. I hope they lose the remainder of their games. I'd like a top 7 pick, please, and insurance that McCarthy will get fired. I am deathly afraid that 7-8-1 will get MM another year.

I'd like a new, innovative offensive head coach who will keep Pettine. And a tradition GM-HC structure please. If not, then fire Mike Murphy too.

He's not serious. Rodgers isn't "trying" to get MM canned. The problem is Aaron Rodgers just got paid for his past performances and now we are going to pay dearly for that ridiculous contract because he's on a swift downward trend. He's trying to be the Rodgers of old but he can't do it anymore. He needs help and fast. Honestly, if we could trade him to Oakland for two no. 1's and Derek Carr I would take it in a second. We get an offensive lineman or two but we load up on defense until we are a dominating one. It's time we think defense not offense. Aaron Rodgers is not going to take us to the promised land. Those days are over.

With the exception of Brees, Rodgers isn't built the same as the others. His beard is now starting to gray. His throwing accuracy is getting worse. He's getting hurt more and more. He's getting harder to coach. He's a decade older than most of his teammates. All major signs of age and decline which is normal. If I am the Packers I would be looking to move on from this guy sooner vs. later considering they are no where near the Bears and even the Vikings at this time. Rodgers got outplayed by Cousins. Cousins!!

Had the Packers moved on quicker from Favre in his later years and Rodgers was playing in that NFC Championship game in 2007 against the Giants we would have won and easily won the super bowl with Rodgers not Favre. The same thing is now happening with Rodgers. We need another Rodgers at the qb postion but a younger version. I'd rather get a king's ransom for Rodgers now than a measley 2nd round pick like we did with Favre in another two years. This older version of Rodgers just like McCarthy has seen better days. The Cowboys did the same damn thing with Herschel Walker and turned those picks into 4 super bowls. The time to strike is now!!

I felt like I just watched a rerun with a bad ending. Same mistakes are replayed game after game: lack of creativity after the first 2 TDs (especially when we ran it on 4th down right into the teeth of the defense), clock mismanagement (misuse of TOs & running the play clock to zero again and again on offense), throwing long on 3rd and short, missing open receivers (i.e. not throwing to them), bad throws by our quarterback, missed tackles, more injuries, a defense that is on the field way too loooooong, and another special teams gaff that seals the defeat. This is happening with a Coach and staff that have been in GB for quite a long time. I like the Coach and all on a personal level, but it is time for a change NOW!

They might have won the game had he played. They were short of receivers. Unbelievable and a huge mistake that might cost him his job.

Rodgers is what he is, can't blame McCarthy for QB1 lack of execution at key moments of game this year. We all knew this team was thin at certain personal groups with the rebuild, that's on IAMGUTE. It will get fixed. Rookies and free agents are always at the bottom, if you have to play them...well expect bad things. Packers ran out of bodies. This defense really missed King and Perry tonight. You fire MM. Take Pettine with him. Are three man front Sucks. The Opposing tackles handle the ends. The double team pushes the NT. Brown is No CB. The SS has been a failure all year. Get the message! This defense couldn't hold the lead. So much more than the 4th and short. Bad tackle angles all night. The packers keep coming up short. And the holding on Morrison gave the Vikings the winning TD.

Pettine is easily one of the best things thats happened in GB this year. I couldn't disagree more. Defense certainly isn't playing its best, but thats what happens when there's a high number of injuries and the GM trades away a starter mid year. If Dix, Breeland, Daniels, Perry, King and Wilkerson were able to play today, its a different outcome.

Blame the highest paid guy in the NFL for only having one TD.

It's where you finish that counts. You do have a point about the injuries. But thats not the story this year. It's just poor play. Penalties. Shooting themselves. { Until the injuries mounted. } I liked Pettine. But the problem is they won't change the defensive line until they get rid of him. And this Defense needs a. SS ! So no matter how much you pay Wilkerson, Perry Daniels. The 3 front is a failure. And as good as the Out- side LBs are. You really better pay a SS first.

" Sometimes I hate being right."
We've been a C-/C+ team for like 6 years now. Over rated players, over paid resigns, wrong resigns, wrong FA's,brought in, unable to get good FA's, blind optimism, denial, feeling like you're watching game replays from yesteryear, needing help for playoff spot with the once best QB, now missing the playoffs as the QB melts to average...reality sucks but at least you're not played the fool via blind homer-ism/optimism. I've taken a lot of heat here because of my realist thinking but I have the last laugh and the comments on the live blog...guarantee it.
It hurts to see this team play like this but hopefully it finally wakes up and starts doing things better.

The latter, the injuries are due to Ted totally ignoring injuries stats on players. Oh wow look Ted the genius drafted this King guy in the second round.
In college King missed most of one season and half another, why serious shoulder injuries. All the other teams passed on him, yes he had potential but he had serious health injuries to take at a two pick.
Our un-drafteds are smallish, slow and injury prone.

Complete bullshit, King missed a total of 7 games over 4 years at Washington. You must actually be thinking of T.J. Watt who missed an entire year at Wisconsin [2014] with an injury and 5-6 more games in 2015. King missed 4 games as a freshman with soft tissue injuries, and 3 more during his sophomore and junior years combined, and none his senior year. He played in and started 39 of 42 games his last 3 years at Washington. Check your facts before posting b.s. so far off base.

Just pathetic. The Packers are not that good right now. I say fire McCarthy now. This is 1999 all over again with Ray Rhodes. Third downs for the Packers are now throw the ball away or get sacked. Play calling is terrible. And Rogers never looks for the check down backs. The players, especially Rodgers need a fresh start. Hope Murphy can pull the trigger and go back to where the general manager has hire and fire responsibility. The trial should be over.

Agreed. I see the same look in AR’s face that Favre had in his face when the Packers lost to Denver in SB32.

Some incredibly stupid play calling and player substitutions last night. I like the aggressive decision on 4th-and-inches but the same call into the middle of the Minny defense? I realize who made the play but also surprised how easily it was stopped.

AR is getting old faster than anyone expected this season. Fabre started retooling his personal off-season workouts and AR needs to do the same if he really plans on playing another 4-5 years.

The Packers would have probably won this game if DeFiliipo (or numerous others) had been coordinating our offense instead of MM. The Vikings didn't seem to have a problem converting third downs. But high percentage third down plays are a foreign concept to MM, who, by the way, has an affinity for punting when he should go for it and going for it when he should punt (why run the same up- the-middle play twice when it was pretty obvious it didn't work the first time, anyway ??) And what's up with those two final throws by AR? I hate to say it, but it almost looks like he's purposely tanking.

The defense did a good job of bending but not breaking with a depleted secondary. Nice effort from the D-line. Special teams clueless again but it didn't cost us. Once again, this was a winnable game if only for a short yardage passing game. Doesn't this team have four tight ends, one of whom could maybe get open to catch a short pass?

Where do you start? This team has to get rid of a lot of deadwood including these smallish guys who get there heads bashed in every game. This team seriously needs speed on defense. Seriously needs pass rushers.
Has Brice ever played an entire game without being hurt, ditto King, Perry, Bulaga..........
Your best pass rusher will be wanting big bucks and be 33 next year.
This to me is beyond a dumpster fire now, its a major fucking blaze that will take many good drafts and free agents who can still play to turn this around.

The Pack doesn't have a 3rd down play for a first down. Why? Coaching or Aaron Rodgers, poor play calling?

I really can’t get too down on #12. I think he’s had a tough hand to play here. Of course if he makes a handful of throws over the past few games they may have been more interesting, but at this point I think they as likely as not just delay the inevitable.

Hard to overcome:
- Adams plus a gaggle of rookies
- Graham who either wasn’t reading defenses the same as Rodgers or was just too slow/injured.
- Dealing with sub-optimal personnel/formations.
- Playcalling
- Offensive philosophy (moreso than play calling)

While I appreciate the “Rodgers and McCarthy share blame” argument, and while it certainly has some merit, I think a lot of comes down on McCarthy.

I keep coming back to the same thing: Rodgers can’t audible out of his personnel, nor can he audible out of McCarthy’s route concepts. Both of these are well documented lately by league insiders as “stale AF.” McCarthy has never given the reins over to 12 like Peyton Manning had. The last I’ve ever seen reported, McCarthy still limits what 12 can audible into.

I actually find myself not wanting to replace McCarthy though. I really wish he could let go of his ego and play-calling duties and hire a very talented hungry/fresh OC—and then stand back and let them do their thing. I just think there is near zero chance that ever happens. If it didn’t happen after last year, it’s just not going to happen ever. Unfortunately McCarthy forces the team to let him go.

If I never see a play with 3 long developing WR routes with no outlet it will be too soon. And you then want to know how to tell it’s not Rodgers checking out of run plays all the time: personnel. Why no two back sets occasionally that force the defense to slow down, or make play action or RPO’s much more threatening?

No counters, or misdirection at all. A playcaller serious about running the ball would mix that in. Thankfully Aaron Jones is brilliant enough to make the zone runs look so good, and has a good running blocking line.

But that lack of run creativity betrays McCarthy’s lack of seriousness about rushing. No, #12 isn’t the run games problem. If anything, I’d wager that at most he’s probably just checked out of a few pointless TFL’s, even if only in exchange for incompletions.

Has 12 missed some throws? Yep. And any careful fan of the Packers during the Rodgers era knows that’s been the case since 2008. I still remember being at the Arizona playoff game in 2009 and watching him overthrow Finley for a sure-fire game winning TD. It happens. He’s been too interception averse, and doesn’t throw guys open like he used to, but that started back in 2015 if not earlier.

No, this season isn’t on Rodgers.

You had me until "no, this season isn't on Rodgers". As much as MM has failed to evolve this offense, Rodgers has failed to play well. Whether it is missed throws or refusal to accept chain-moving short passes, he isn't playing well. Both the head coach (and OC) and center of the offense are not performing well enough to win in this league.

This team, in a must win situation vs a division rival, looked flat and uninspired. We were slower and weaker, and we didn’t want it as much as the guys in purple.

It's on both Rodgers and McCarthy, but Rodgers is watching the rush and not keeping his eyes downfield which is causing him to miss a lot of open receivers.

Average play calling + average QB1 play = average to below average results.

I don't want to rebuild either a new coaching staff as that means another below par year (at least!), But I think we are at that point.

The draft and develop philosophy is biting us big-time. Too many of the young guys aren’t getting better, and even seem like they have hit a wall. We play like an inexperienced team in so many ways. Part of the reason for the delays and running the clock down is the less than smooth operations getting plays and personnel in. When a guy is running in from the sideline with 12 seconds left on the play clock, you know it’s not going to end well. And on the punt that Tramon botched, we had nine guys out there. There were several other examples like this. It’s definitely time for a change.

I like it when the QB throws a ball 2 behind a WR and into the dirt at the line of scrimmage.

I also like it when they show the replay and the QB didn't have a single foot on the ground when he released the ball.. for no reason, just decided to hop up in the air as he's in his backpedal, and throws the ball.

Rodgers needs to get his head back into playing football, and start running footwork drills and PRACTICING fundamental football. He's been making sloppy throws largely due to 'just wingin' it' all season long.

2 of 10 on 3rd down.

3rd & 8: INC short
3rd & 1: Jones run for 3 eventual TD
7 plays, no 3rd downs TD
3rd & 5: Sack
3rd & 9: INC. Penalty on MN
3rd & 4: INC
3rd & 7: INC deep pass
3rd & 2: Jones 1 yard run, 4th/1 Jones zero
3rd & 8: Delay of game
3rd & 13: Sack
3rd & 4: Sack
3rd & 10: 36 yard pass to Adams
3rd & 1: INC short pass (very short) to ESB

Really 2 of 11 on third downs if one includes the free play. AR went deep, of course. That's the most predictable play in our repertoire. Wonder if he took the check down there, whether MN would have been so stupefied that it would turn into a big gainer.

Taking one positive out out this, Mike Pettine has done great things with a really shallow talent pool.

While its cold comfort, "Better" on-paper Packers defenses in recent years have been embarrassed.

How in the world can professionals routinely lose track of the play clock?? I feel like if we went back through all of Rodgers games the past 3 or 4 years we’d find at least 40 or 50 timeouts wasted on the play clock. I feel like I’m decently knowledgeable about football, but I can’t think of a reason for running the play clock down to 1 on every snap. Am I missing something with that strategy???

I get the occasional play clock mishap but what Rodgers does with the play clock dumbfounds me.

It drives me nuts and on more than one occasion has affected McCarthy's ability to challenge a call. To me it's the highlight of McCarthy's ineptness and inability to get things fixed. I have zero confidence in McCarthy at this point.

one thing i keep hearing is getting rid of people and that will not help much with the team i think it's time to sit rodgers down and start the other qb .MCcarthy is done he will be gone and i wish him good luck in the future. good bye matthews and cobb you've done get thing but now it's time to say good bye .i think they shouldn't get rid of king (players have bad times before they have good times ) so we as packer fans just have to take it in the chin this year and hope they will be much better next year.

Having had a sleepless night to digest what I watched last night, here are my thoughts;
1} McCarthy is done. Its just time. Playcalling has gotten stale, and I dont believe he has the confidence of the players anymore.
2)We need a quarterback coach.....now. Someone that can reign in Rogers and get him back on his game. I know he is playing with a young reciever group, but he is a totally different guy back there this year. The knee is probably affecting his game, but the bad throws-he wouldnt have missed that shot to Adams two years ago.
3}Hope MP is allowed to stay on after the post season house cleaning. The defense, playing with a couple guys that were working at a 7-11 two months back, actually did a good job last night keeping the packers close for three quarters.
4) We need a legit punt returner. Tramon has fumbled at least two away this year. Special teams needs a new coach.
5} Part ways with Perry, find a way to keep Mathews with the team. Move him inside. He is still the best OLB on the roster, arguabley the best linebacker period.

Awwww we're all butt-hurt over another predictable ending. A very uninspiring performance once again. This team plays a lot like the NYFootball Giants. One or two good plays, then a lot of what-the-hell-is-going-on-around-here? plays.
Lot of season left.

I'm actually numb to it all at this point. Anyone have suggestions on good draft coverage? What little I've read so far suggests edge and de is the strength of this draft, but that the talent level is not much different from say pick 6-20ish.

a few thoughts.

OL needs some serious retooling, and has for 3 years.

this may sound crazy, but I wish Rodgers would get off his friggin vegan lifestyle diet. He doesn't look or act healthy. Looks a lot like the yoga instructor at the gym. Lean, but not strong.

MM needs to go. He had the opportunity and the need last night to get aggressive with the play calling, and completely failed.

I love Tramon Williams, but he's old and slow and somewhat of a liability these days.

GB has to get to the bottom of all the soft tissue injuries with players. More hamstring and groin pulls than I can ever remember. Funny that of all people, CMIII hasn't had the annual hammy pull.

Nick Perry. Good Riddance.

As to CM3, the season isn't over. He has lots of money at stake, enough to pay for a hair washing. He takes plays off and was really sad 'sistering' last night on several plays.

watch the killer td when KC rolls right on a play that the packers use to stop the clock repeatedly during games and hits a TD....then ask yourself if you really want CM3 back? It is not just the runs he refused to play his position to stop.

Spot on as usual, Nags! I love watching you lose your mind because THAT is exactly how I feel. In the past, I've actually chucked my remote at the fireplace and then had to pay $30 to DirecTV to get a replacement. It was at that point I realized I had an anger problems with the Packers. You do the yelling for me and it is very therapeutic!

The game plan was horrible and AR didn't do anything to help. Why not just nut up and do the same shit Favre did and ignore the coach. What...are they going to release AR for that!?!?!?! lol Bench him? Yeah right.

Keep it up Nags. And get Benke some help...he has issues! lol
