Gut Reactions: Ravens beat Packers 26-13

Aaron gives his Gut Reactions to the Packers preseason loss in Baltimore.

  • The Packers got pushed around tonight
  • Kizer. Boyle. Wilkins. None of them are it.
  • Darrius Shepherd is on his way to making this team.
  • John Harbaugh should be brought up on charges for challenging offensive pass interference on a three yard gain during a preseason game.
  • Not getting to see Rodgers and the starting offense was a real let down.
  • Guess those tackling donuts in practice didn't do the trick, huh?
  • Robert Tonyan and Rashan Gary played a ton of snaps tonight and sure didn't seem to do much with them.
  • Ty Summers missed way too many tackles tonight.
  • Elgton Jenkins didn't look out of place with the first team o-line
  • Did the Packers get off the plane?
  • Going to be interesting to see how LaFleur and company respond to a very sub-standard showing.
  • Time for a bunch of beverages.
  • Go Pack.

Lazard and Shepherd continue to impress. Kumerow and GMO did well. Bolton and Summers continue to impress. Keke and Tonyan also impress.

Dexter trying to catch one handed when he didnt have to really dissapointed me. Talent but he needs to focus.

THE BAD;

. First string run Defense (mostly on first downs)

. First String rushing Offense

. (116: The difference in rushing yards between the Ravens (171) and Packers (55). Like Aaron Nagler mentioned, Packers got manhandled

. Tackling

. Not much from Gary (again)

. Packers enthusiasm

.Rodgers tight back (would have been a different first quarter with him, Obviously)

. My excitement level after this game

THE GOOD;

. Didn't seem to have injuries of note

. It was only preseason

. Sheppard , Allen Lazard and Jake Kumerow. Curtis Bulton

Couple of other things, but I'm to underwhelmed to think of them right now

PS; If the Packers played the Bears tonight in Chicago, we would have lost (I would have to think ?). Really hope things pick up before the season opener

First string run defense was underwhelming, but I will take it anyday, given how the secondary performed well against Jackson
The only injury seems to be a potential concussion to Hollman. Packers CB depth seems to be getting thinner
Sheppard made some plays and had some decent returns, but the one drop sticks with me

Dexter, Boyle, Carson and Madison had very bad nights. Summers has a ton of potential but until he cleans up his tackling and angles, he will not start.
Shepherd was excellent on both O and returns and Bolton shone on D.
Kumerow, Lazard and Tonyan looked good and Brown should be treated as a Lock.
Hall looked like our best healthy RB. Needs to get more snaps. Carson looked pedestrian. That is a good run D though.

All this against a team that played its starters for quite a long time and treats pre season more seriously than any other. Hard to judge D because they need to scheme for that QB. And weird O.

Yeah Coldworld, I agree. BAL has won 18 straight preseason games. Might be 19 now.

I'm just grateful the only injury was Hollman, and I hope whatever he had is not serious. I really have liked seeing him play.

Kumerow, Lazard and Shepherd played great. The landscape at WR could change drastically if Gutekunst decides to make a trade or two, and I could see all 3 of these guys on the 53. There are WR needy teams out there.

Bolton looked good, while Summers had a night that was so bad, I'm sure he will make good on. That had to be impactful and embarrassing to him. I couldn't believe how many times he missed tackles.

Elgton Jenkins had a night I'm sure he would like to forget too, but hopefully these players learn from their mistakes.

Kingsley Keke looks like he's a pretty special player for a rookie DT. The game doesn't look too big for him. Tony Brown is a lock. Reggie Gilbert seemed to play well, again. Cannot overlook Kenny Clark. WOW. He is a very special player. Savage made some plays last night too.

I wish Manny Wilkins would get a fair shot with 2 quarters of play with the 1s & 2s to really show what he can do. Some of the guys he's been forced to play with do not allow for a solid evaluation.

Considering its game two of the PRESEASON, NO Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, Danny Vitale, or even Jamal Williams for that matter, Davante Adams playing in just one series IIRC...

Your prediction looks about the same as it did the first time...Like BS!

Knowing it IS game two of the PRESEASON, I'm not sure what's worse...The prediction in the first place or actually bringing it up again though I am leaning towards the latter of the two.

It's preseason... take it for what it's worth an evaluation tool for the bottom half of the roster and a tune up for starters. If anyone thinks they can draw any conclusions from preseason on the outcome of the season they're an idiot. the 0-16 Lions were 4-0 in preseason.

I think 9-7 is realistic. Holmgren and Sherman were both 9-7 their first seasons and MM was 8-8. MM started 4-8, then closed out his first season with four straight wins.

That was definitely a great catch by Robert Tonyan and the ball did not get stripped until after he was on the ground. Great booth review as they didn't even look at it. What a joke. Guys ate out there killing themselves to make the team and all the booth has to do is watch the replay.

The running game execution was simply dire. They have a good run D but still that was poor. Hill needs more looks, Dexter had a mare and, after dropping 3 little screen passes in practice, dropped one here. I’m not sold that he is ready to be on the active roster.

The play in the 4 the qtr usually gives a hint at the job the coaches are doing - NOT a good sign. I saw one series of BK to go to go penalties followed by a line going up a sack. That was brutal to watch even if lesser talent. Rodgers is more and more a prina Donna. 55 yds rushing? What was up with that stupid challenge? Really poor tackling... Just a forgettable performance. Good to put on take to show how NOT to play and hopefully learn from and improve.

Rodgers is a prima donna because the conservative conditioning staff kept him out of a preseason game, AFTER playing a whole season on a BROKEN LEG?

I really wonder how much a difference the starting line and RBs make, but to be fair, they have starting caliber interior linemen on the second team and the run game has still had few big plays and short average runs. There were a few times though the RB got caught taking the wrong hole or didnt have the speed to hit the edge, I think Jones would have made a play out of. Lets hope the backs get healthy

Our offense is going to look bad until we have a QB on the field who can win games. We're all hoping Rodgers starts 50 in a row; I don't think that's likely.

The special teams......why do we keep beating our heads against the wall? Fair catch, avoid the penalties so we don't start inside our 10.

Defensively.....last night was disappointing. We had our defensive guys out there and they didn't do a real good job against the run. Run defense is largely about discipline and teamwork.....everybody has to control their gap, even if it's just dive down and make a pile in the hole. And you've got to have people who can tackle. I'm not sure if you can teach a person to tackle if he doesn't like tackling in the first place. Guys who like to tackle usually do pretty well without a lot of coaching on technique. JMO.

Nonetheless, any offensive possession that doesn't result in a TD is a win for the defense, and by that standard, the defense had some wins.

I’m just glad that was a preseason game and it doesn’t appear that anyone was injured with the possible exception of Holman.

Overall the team looks like they need a lot of work. Either that or they were just going through the motions to prevent injuries. Graham still doesn’t contribute much if anything at all.

Tackling still poor.

I would not be surprised if Gute made the call to hold Rodgers out of the game. Back tightness has been used to keep players out of games in every sport for decades. Many teams have been keeping their key players out of preseason games so far this year. The Giants announced they are not playing their RB Saquon Barkley in any preseason game and he is perfectly healthy. I think Matt Ryan has been held out by the Falcons as well.

Two more games to get through without injuries. Go Pack. Thanks, Since ‘61

Hopefully Rogers can get some good quality time next week. It’s gonna take some time for the season to start. Which is cool. Hopefully that dude makes good on his word and goes to Vegas so the Packers can have a nice start to the season with a victory.

Damn, that was discouraging. Looked like the typical old defense out there: no pass rush, horrible tackling, and getting repeatedly burned by underneath receivers with room to run. We've seen this movie too many times. I honestly don't understand why tackling isn't more of an emphasis here--they give up way, way too many extra yards with their inability to either corral the ball carrier or make solo tackles. Grab a leg or a shoe or something until a teammate can get there to finish the job.

I think it took three quarters for the offense to reach double digits in rushing yards. The one big gain was wiped out by a holding call. Once again, not very encouraging.

Yeah, I know it's only preseason, but I still expected to see a lot more pep out of this team. Maybe it was the humidity.

This game shows why there needs to be 4 preseason games. Maybe even more are needed. These might be the only real practice these guys are getting these days.
So again, why does everyone whine about preseason games? They want to see poor execution in the real season, or get things corrected in preseason?
Make the starters play a full half or the entire game until they do better job. They can come out once they execute their assignments properly. That is how I feel about all the whining about preseason.

Lack of run stopping, penalties on special teams, back up qb's not going to take us anywhere if 12 goes down, run blocking was dismal, tackling putrid, time to get to work with a little more serious effort! Otherwise long season ahead! And I'm a glass half full kind of fan!

- Let down not seeing Rodgers play.
- Packers don't have a backup QB.

Ok try to be positive:

The running game is still a work in progress. Until we see Rodgers and Jones play we don't really now what this offense looks like.

The tackling is.... uh a work in progress. Unfortunately there was just no work done on it since the first game.

The backup quarterbacks are... uhhhhhh a work in progress. Maybe the actual backup QB is not on the roster right now.

On an actual positive note it will be hard to keep Davis over Shepherd since Davis can never stay on the field.

I don't see the Summers love, he is (pardon the expression) a work in progress. Bolton catches the eye more.

This one was a slog to watch.

Don’t return kicks you don’t have to. Start on the 25.

It’s not just the Packers. Every game features a guy returning from the end zone and being stopped short of the 25.

de Beer with de Whiff.*
Madison looks 3rd string.
Light looked 2nd/3rd string.
Jamall Williams had a good night.
Trevor Davis had a bad night.
GB looks cheap not paying Rizzo.

*Still plagiarizing Nagler's "de Beer with de Hold."

"GB looks cheap not paying Rizzo." Amen. All I kept thinking during the ST play with all the stupid penalties (yeah, I know it's preseason, yada, yada.) was that the special teams units appear to be still "special" in a bad way. Yikes.

I'm not so sure why everyone is so high on the three wideouts from last year. (MVS, ESB and Moore) I haven't seen much to get excited about. Kumerow and Lazard look better to me.

Also watching the Packers run that stretch play with the running back reminds me of Cobb trying to run it and losing two yards. Yeccch!

Can Kizer run very much at all? At least there would be another thing for the defense to worry about.

That said, The Ravens have won what? 15 straight preseason games. These games must be important to Harbaugh. They go all out.

correct bout Ravens. Joking comment re: 2 of the 3 drafted WR's, the former 2 plus TD Jesus and this new upstart Shepard are players and will be on the 53. Did you see MVS and EQ last year? And, who has tossed the ball this season in a game situation thus far? Last, stretch play has stunk the last several years and they should consider shelfing it-funny #18 remark!

Did anyone notice if Moore even played? I looked for him and never saw or heard of him. Interesting!

I noticed him on special teams, but not on offense. Quite the disappearing act.

My God this site is hilarious. 95% of you were just talking about how preseason is meaningless in the other thread...now that same 95% is bitching and crying and complaining GB didn't win a preseason game lol. You guys act like a bunch of females.

Oh I'm sorry - truth hurts?

There's maybe 3-4 people here who are even worth reading what they have to say...the rest of the lot is just a bunch of grown ass men whining like girls and trolls that know absolutely shit about football making multiple accounts to post the same asinine comments in every thread...on multiple sites at that.

Only a few people are worth reading, and you aren’t one of them.

How much money has your expansive knowledge of football made for you? People paid me about $5000/year for 15 years. What’s your career won/lost record?

You are an insulting blowhard.

Is it time to cut everyone and build the team around Kumerow?

have to laugh.
Ravens 15 straight wins and it is meaningless? They treat the games the same as other teams?

Have to worry. Clark was very good. Lowry was pretty bad. Adams JAG at best. Potential serious problem without someone stepping up. Keke is our remaining hope

Yuck what an ugly game. Why does it always seem like when the other teams running ,or receiving for that matter as well, we can't tackle, almost always allows additional bonus yardage, yet when we run we have to scrape for every single yard.

Well there's always next week.

There are honestly so few takeaways from this "game." The only legit things we learned:

+ Bottom of the WR chart is gonna be very interesting.
+ The coaches might have forgot to tell the D that this is "tackle" football. We should really do something about that.
+ Watching Kizer and Boyle throw makes me wanna curl up in a corner and have a good weep.
+ Preseason is gonna preseason. Fans can only hope that the mistakes made here translate to progress when the games count.

No panic from me, but a LITTLE concern about our tackling and backup QB situation.

Am I crazy to think Boyle is the better QB2? Am I crazier to think Kizer would get picked up in a nanosecond if we let him go? All I want is a back-up QB that won't F up a game or two if we really need him. I'm guessing that's what EVERY team wants, therefore I'm baffled why Colin Kaepernick doesn't have a QB job. Everything else aside, that dude can manage an offense and make plays (and he proved it against the Packers more than once). Anyhow, our squad has much to clean up. Aside from awful tackling, I'm not concerned. #GoPackGo

Corey Manske,

Neither deserve the ball from my point of view.

All I can say is they did not throw an Int.

Need AR to play in preseason to determine just how good these new receivers are. They prove nothing catching Kizer and Boyle passes. If they catch AR passes against competition, we can then say good bye to Graham, Davis, and at least one other TE and receiver. Shepherd and more importantly Lazard need to make this team if they get tight with AR. Lazard will be a young J Graham in the Red Zone.

PS.... get rid of that piece of crap tackling donut, GB has been using that damn thing for years. It aids in developing good form tackling about as well as our Strength and Conditioning program preventing our players from pulling hammys.
