Gut Reactions: Packers beat Seahawks

Aaron's gut reactions from the Divisional matchup between the Packers and the Seahawks.

  • Could tell guys were not in sync at the start, esp with Veldheer in for Bulaga.
  • That said, Veldheer played hell of a game.
  • Seattle's first offensive play should have been a turnover. Pure incompetence
  • Aaron Jones has such great vision. His knack for seeing the cutback is so impressive.
  • Hell of a job by the left side of the line on that Jones TD before the half.
  • That 3rd down throw throw to Graham was one of the best Rodgers has made all year.
  • Jaire Alexander is tough as nails.
  • Congrats to Davante on setting a franchise post season record for receiveing yards!
  • Kenny Clark ran down Russel Wilson for a sack while playing with a bad back.
  • Davante in the open field has to give defenders nightmares.
  • Jace Sternberger can block man.
  • Rough night for Jake Kumerow.
  • I'm going to see Wilson scrammbling in my nightmares.
  • This team never makes it easy but god I love it.

It was scary having Oren Burkes out there. He's not very good.

For a while in the 2nd half I thought that we brought Dom capers back to coach the defense.
Rodgers to Adams was basically the whole game plus some tough running by Aaron Jones.
Defense made the big stop when they had to but this game belongs to the Packers offense and Aaron Rodgers on 3rd down.

On to SF. Go pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Big effort from the defense in the 1st half. They'll need to play the full 60 next week.

Yup, Wilson was a magician. The 3 straight long TDs was bad but they did right the ship in the end. Jaire got a huge sack on the 2 pter and Preston took him down once and for all. I was moderately surprised they punted after that. But then, I've seen the Packers 4 offense deliver before.

Why does the offense look like a Granny two foot driving for half the game. I know they won with a couple of big throws but damn can we eliminate the need once in awhile at least. 21-3 and Granny starts driving.

What I saw when the season started was a first year HC with a new offensive staff teaching a new offense to a team that has suspect pass catchers, an o-line with a suspect interior, RBs that had more promise than production and a QB that is not Superman anymore. I never expected top 5 offense. They surely have not been that. But I've seen enough to believe they are on the right track. If Gute can shore up the pass catchers and make the o-line a little bit better, I think they can be top 5 in year 2.

As for today, given all that above, I'm pretty happy with 28, especially considering they also delivered the 2 firsts downs that prevented Wilson from getting one more shot.

Who cares right now if they are top 5 offense in a year or two. What matters is wins and getting hot at the right time. They are now one of 4 teams standing, which is a better result than having a top 5 offense. Though I won't be unhappy if your predictions come true. It's gonna cost money to keep Jones and Bulaga may be gone. Will be a different team next year.

For this year, just keeping winning is all that matters. 6 in a row now means they still have a shot to run it to 8. Rodgers picked one heck of time to play his best game since at least October. If he has two more of that kind of game in him for this season, things might end very happy in Titletown.

I call them like I see them. I seen a team come out of the gate and though having a couple of possessions that were slow-ish, they looked like the Sea defense had no answer, which was iterated by Aikmen also, and obtaining a21-3 lead. I then saw Granny take over and the offense look like it was riding the brake with welcome. I then saw Rodgers make some earlier version throws to save the game because Wilson was creating his magical illusions again with a tired Packer defense. I will say I thought Jones snapped a knee cap on the first series in the 2nd half and it likely could have hindered him but he played so I guess not. And no, I'm not forgiving Graham for all he hasn't done. Maybe a little more if he continues next week and possibly 2 weeks later also.
Did I miss something.

Hey you forgot that there's another team on the field. They started to push at the LOS and close the gaps. Just because the Packers players get outmanned some times it's not because they forgot how to play the game or didn't try. Some plays you just get beat on. Overall though, how did you like it? Anything other than a resounding Go Pack Go will sound like you're trolling us.

It was too pretty at the start, they had to turn it into a win ugly game.

They overcame two penalties to score their second td. This was the sort of thing that would have stopped them earlier in the year.

I thought rhe 3rd down where Rodgers predetermined he was going to Adams and had a probable td on the outside was going to haunt my dreams but he made up for it with those two third down throws.

The packers should have had 15 sacks today but Wilson was one dang slippery fish. Other than him the Packers really physically dominated the game.

Woohoo. Enjoy it!

Moved the new offense? 18 weeks into the year and it's a new offense? Honestly look little different to the past 10 years. Run the play clock down to 0 with little upbeat play, which was what was suppose to happen. Rodgers still doing what he wants. Great game but not much has changed since Rodgers ran McCarthy out of town.

Little different? Check out the Passing Chronicles here to see how one part of the offense works and how it works differently from past years. Yeah, it is new compared to previous years.
Rodgers ran McCarthy out of town? Don't think Rodgers kept Capers and Zook on far longer than the team could stand. Don't think Rodgers did not understand what a talent Aaron Jones is. The McCarthy mistakes will stand on their own, he did not need, and did not get a push, from anyone else. He did it on his own.

I have been critical of #12 this season but he really stepped up in this game. He was decisive and so accurate, just dropping in those clutch passes as sweet as can be. - Rodgers got his accuracy back for this game
- To state the obvious, Russell is tough to tackle
- As always, packers made it interesting
- Very good game by the offense
- Defense came through when they had to in the second half
- Lazard better be ok
- and I love that they got the game sealing 1st down on a questionable mark just to upset Carroll more

Uhhh yeah that's what happens when you don't score on your offensive possessions …. you make it seem like the Packers never got the ball. What happened was they abandoned the run which lead to two fairly quick 3 and outs and kept putting the gassed def back on the field for 10 play scoring drives. Packers had 3 play drive that got 6 yards.

What game were you watching? Packers scored a TD on their first possession of the second half. Right after the D let Seattle drive for a TD on their first possession. After the Packer's TD, what did the D do; let Seattle drive for another TD.

You're whistling in the wind if you think this Packer offense has the talent to score on every single possession. Have you watched the WR group this season? Rodgers isn't Superman anymore to paper over that talent gap. Maybe he never was. He always had good pass catchers and he knew how to use them. And they did not even come close to abandoning the run. If anything, they stuck with it too much.

The offense answered the first Seattle TD with one of their own but only took 2.5 minutes of clock.. The next Seattle TD was followed by a bad drive that led to another Seattle TD. After that, the offense drained 4.5 minutes of clock to allow the defense a breather, which allowed them enough energy to make the decisive sack by Preston. Then the offense took off the last 2:35 and 3 Seattle TOs. All while Seattle was doing a good job vs the run and the Packers collection of ordinary pass catches was demonstrating why they get that adjective.

Throw in the 28 points and I think they maximized what they have on offense pretty well. I'm not sure what more can reasonably be expected of the offense.

I called him a possession receiver this week Adorabelle. But when I called him that I also said he was GREAT and meant the Packers need a WR with SPEED. There haven't been a lot of plays in Adams career when he catches a pass, has green in front of him, and scores a TD running away from defenders.

There are very few WR's in this league who can get off the LOS like Adams can. There are also very few who run the precise routes Adams does. It wasn't a knock on Adams, not in the least, it was an opinion of a Packers fan just like yourself.

Congrats packers. That was a pretty win, despite the Wilson problem. Seems packers have a hard time with elusive QBs that have an arm. But they shut down Lynch and contained deep strikes for the most part and GB's defense allowed the move the chain type 10 yard passes. What else could they do when Wilson avoids so many would-be sacks. Its amazing the CBs/Safeties could hold up for those 5-7 second scrambles. I kept thinking Wilson would make a mistake and GB would get a turnover. Wilson got a beathing, but he has plenty of time to soak his bruises.
Game Ball, Davante or Z'darius? So sweet to see the 3rd down conversions. Great for some Jimmy G revenge night, the dagger.

Wilson gives a lot of teams problems when the Seattle coaching staff lets him loose. Their coaching staff is too dumb to realize they cannot run the ball and they should just let Wilson carry them. When the Packers jumped out to the huge lead, they had no choice but to put the game on Wilson...and it was the worst thing that could have happened to the Packers defense. Seattle stopped wasting downs by trying to run.

The Pack played to the intensity of the playoffs - lots of guys having great games on offense and defense.

Aaron pretty much took what the D gave him and man, were he and Davante on the same page!

Clark left his back pain in the locker room and was all over the Seattle backfield making plays and opening lanes for the two super Smiths!

Alexander did some hitting and loved his 4th quarter blitz on Wilson.

Was thrilled the day the Pack signed Veldheer, getting a decent veteran tackle so late in the season really paid off big time tonight!

Scott had a couple of nice deep punts and Special Teams played pretty decent all night long.

I think there were quite a few players with the flu that weren't admitting it, the defense got gassed way too early in the game.

Hope Lazard is ok, he's needed. Hope bulaga and KC get back to full health.

What happened to the run game?

I believe the game plan was for king to cover Metcalf. Did well enough. That puts Alexander on lockett? If so, terrible job.

What a clutch throw to Adams late in the game. Rodgers wants a win @SF so badly to exercise those draft demons. He was all business in the post game interview.

Well, we won another one by the skin of our teeth. Magnificent game from Adams... Rodgers coming through in the clutch...the biggest catch in Graham's Packer career... and P. Smith with a most URGENTLY needed sack. But why, oh why, was the secondary playing so soft in the second half? I know Wilson creates havoc with his scrambling ability, but most of his completions were ridiculously easy. Pettine finally brought Alexander on a blitz to nix the two-point conversion, but where was something like that when the defense was surrendering gobs of yardage on the previous drives?

Concerning the officiating, at least it was consistent: if they couldn't see the ball on the Hollister fumble, then they couldn't see it on the first A. Jones touchdown, either. Anytime you don't ultimately get screwed by the officials, you should count your blessings.

This was a great win for the players, coaches, and fans, but I think it could have been a little easier if a more aggressive defense had been used in the second half.

Field conditions mostly. Turf was in far better shape that I thought possible after the Packer-Bear game. Even at best, that is one slippery field on game day. Pettine has played yards vs scores all season long. Came up big in Seattle taking field goals instead of touchdowns. Win Ugly, but win. On to SF.

The first play for Seattle was a fumble recovered by GB. I genuinely don’t understand the call. If it might be a fumble the refs need to determine who recovered. Sullivan had it with the naked eye.No replay even needed. Embarrassing for the NFL. Truely. I’m glad the Packers won and we don’t need to talk about it. NFL just can’t miss plays that big and that important

Pereira I thought questioned that call and certainly questioned the grabbing the helmet call on Clowney. I find the detailed explanation of the rule book pretty helpful, especially as it seems the refs apply it pretty haphazardly.

Got to give it up for Jimmy Graham and Rodgers, Graham hasn't been great by any means but 3 catches today for 42 yards and 3 HUGE first downs.

The entire team played one hell of a first half. Even in the 2nd half the did a good job. Wilson is friggen great and you know at halftime Carroll said okay Russ, go do EVERYTHING and he did.

Davante!!!

No matter what happens next week or in the SB I'm very proud of this team. 14-3 with a rookie HC who was an OC for 2 years and called plays for just one before being hired.

If that was ANY other QB the Packers would have had 8 or 10 sacks.

I keep wondering why Rodgers has continued to throw to Graham all season given his performance. And the best reason I can think of is that he runs his routes cleanly so 12 knows he will be there. The other TEs i guess are really only there to block (which they seem to do increasingly well) but that may be because they aren't running their pass catching routes well in practice. Any way glad the Rodgers-Graham connection was a live one last night.

Packers played a lot of their base 3-4-4 tonight. Some 3-3-5 with two LB and one slot DB, not much of their 3-3-5 with hybrid/DB, nor did I see their 2-3-6. I wonder how much the flu impacted this defense.

Rodgers accuracy much better tonight than the great majority of the season, but I would have appreciated more than 3 targets to WRs not named Adams.

We need everyone involved in this offense to make the deep run in the post season. We saw in the second half what happens to the offense when a defense takes away Adams. That's why it's important to spread the targets around and make sure everyone is in the game.

Really felt like it was going to be a classic 2-minute defeat tonight, I was very concerned with Rodgers targeting Davante in double coverage on 3rd and long while Kumerow was open on the intermediate post route on a much higher percentage pass that still would have moved the sticks, but it was a on-the-money throw and Adams did his part, and it was enough.

Really not happy with how the running game wasn't utilized for stretches in the second half when it was still a three score game.

I'll take the win. There's a lot of room for improvement during the next 3 weeks.

Not sure I agree, Rodgers did not force Adams the ball, he was simply open that much and Seattle did not have an answer. If a defense doesn't make adjustments to stop a player you continue to go to that player until they have to, keep picking at the scab until it bleeds...

Only three targets to WRs not named Adams.

Even when a wr is on fire, you still need to spread around the ball. It opens everything up; it keeps the defense honest; and if/when the defense decides to bracket your star WR, your other options are already in the flow of the game and more likely to contribute when needed.

Adams will always "be open" vs. single coverage, but if you don't take advantage of your other WRs, it won't be long before a defense puts a safety over the top of him to take him away.

There's a big picture in all of this.

What happened to the offense in the second half is was due to not seeing that that bigger picture.

There are other WRs on the field that are open besides Adams. They need to be utilized. Balance is everything.

That big picture gets pretty ugly when you start including the WRs other than Adams. On the year, Lazard was the #2 with 35 catches for 477 yards. And he got hurt in the first half.
Clamoring for more Geronimo Allison, MVS and Kumerow is not a particularly strong point on a night they scored 28 by ignoring them. 28 is generally considered a winning effort on offense and Adams was electric from start to finish.

Those other guys are not making plays because they are not that good, not because Rodger is trying to keep them down. He wants balance as much as anyone, I'm quite sure. But you can't get blood from a stone.

The most cohesive and dominant this offense looked all season were the games that Davante Adams was injured.

There's a reason for that, and it has to do with distribution of the ball (as well as better implementation of A. Jones & Co.)

The Week 15 vs. MN is an example of Rodgers spreading the ball around even while feeding Adams the ball, and the offense looked fantastic (16 targets for Adams, 13 for the rest of the WRs, and a total of 11 different players targeted on the day.)

Yes, there have been times where the other Packers WRs have had bad drops. But overall, the offense runs most efficiently when they are included. The success of this offense is so much bigger than one receiver, and when Adams is the only WR getting significant targets, the offense generally does not sustain itself.

They scored 28 and had you pissing and moaning. But you cite a game where they scored 23 as something you want to see more.

I'll take the 28. Especially from this offense. They have had lots to complain about. Yesterday was not an example.

Oppy's picture

January 13, 2020 at 05:48 pm

I don't know how I can better explain this- they scored 28 in a half when the defense didn't take away Adams.

Once the defense committed to doubling Adams, the offense scored 7 points in a half. Couldn't sustain a drive.

It would be a different story if they doubled Adams in the second half and the Packers only scored 7 points despite trying to hit other WRs.. but that wasn't the case, as evidenced by only 3 targets to other WRs the entire game. Not three other WRs... 3 total targets to other WRs.

The offense runs best when the ball is spread around.

As to the total points.. clock control is a valuable element to controlling a game.
Vs. MN in week 15: Packers TOP- 37:32, MN 22:28.
Vs. SEA yesterday: Packers TOP- 29:29, SEA 30:31

8 minutes more on the field for the offense = 8 minutes less on the field for the seahawks. That's potentially two or three fewer scoring drives for the opponent.

It's all interwoven.

Oppy, buddy, don't look now, but I think we just made "a deep run in the postseason." There are 4 teams left in the tourney. Is your definition of a "deep run" the Super Bowl? ::shrug::

I saw a defense contain and harass Russell Wilson, and an offense close out a playoff win. You wanted a better win? Like all the pretty better wins the Ravens had this year? Or the Patriots? What time do they play next week?

Of course there's room for improvement! JHFC, this is a young team with a rookie head coach heading to the NFC Championship game. My take is you're just really not happy, and that's cool, you do you.

They way some of you people complain about fans that critique the play of players even when the team wins, it's almost like you don't realize that every team in the NFL has an entire staff of coaching assistants that dissect every play and grade every snap for every player after every game- win or lose.

I don't need "pretty better" wins, but I don't believe this team can win vs. the likes of a 49ers defense or a team playing like the TItans if they go out and simply target a single WR all game long.

This team has shown how versatile the offense can be during different spans during this season and how consistently it can march down the field when it utilizes all the available personnel. What we saw tonight is the argument for that type of play from the offense- when we focus entirely on Adams, eventually he will be taken away and the offense comes to a stop. Only 7 points in the second half from our offense.

We managed to weather that storm tonight against a suspect defense(22nd scoring defense, 22nd Rush defense, 27th pass defense). I don't think we're going to see another team in the playoffs with this weak of a defense. I believe we need to be better about utilizing all the options available to the offense. It's as simple as that.

Letherhead/Oldschool nailed it in his posts leading up to the game. This was when our veteran offensive players needed to step up and shine., and they did. I am so happy for Jimmy Graham. What a clutch performance by him, and Adams was stellar from start to finish. Rodgers was pretty sharp for a washed up narcissist who needs to play hero ball. A solidteam win against a tough opponent.

I've broached the idea of keeping Graham unless and until Sternberger and Tonyan show more. I don't want to do it (I would have cut him last March), but he seemed to be the clear #2 option with Lazard out. Yes, GB would be overpaying for the production he is likely to offer, but at this point, the offense needs production regardless of its efficiency, or lack thereof.

Not advocating, just throwing the notion out there. Maybe spend the cap savings better elsewhere.

I thought Sternberger played pretty well tonight - certainly blocked really well. I think the Packers will be just fine with Sternberger, Tonyan and a draft choice / free agent at TE next year as well as all the cap space cutting Graham will free up.

As far as the game, these Packers just don't know any other way to win than ugly, but they have been ugly 14 times this year. Not sure my heart can take much more, but on to SF....

After a big touchdown catch in week one, it seems as though for the rest of the season Jimmy Graham continually came up just a little bit short.
Then, to clinch the playoff game tonight, he first reaches out to barely nab a ball low and away, then surges forward to get the first down by an inch.
Before the game, I would have been good with Graham not playing at all. How good it is to be wrong!

P.S. Geronimo Allison is another guy who I was willing to sit for this game; congrats to him for a super catch in the clutch.

Random thoughts. Classic Packer Win. (this season) Any playoff win is a good win on a good day. Russ Wilson is special. Any other QB at least 8 sacks. Preston Smith heck of a game... Packers and flu, yuk. Rodgers was good today, for what he didn't do. He ran the scheme and let the plays come to him. Paid off in the last two minutes. (QB1 was very sharp tonight...) D. Adams is healthy at last... Those old TE really earned their pay checks tonight. Seattle. Dirty. As. Ever. Cry Pete cry..... I need a (root) beer...... PS. I'm exhausted...

A playoff win at Lambeau in January... PRICELESS. Aaron Rodgers being accurate and throwing DIMES ... PRICELESS. Didn't feel like MLF kept the pedal down though. Defense didn't play well in the second half, Pettine half time adjustments didn't match Hawks offensive adjustments. Tough win against a tough, elusive Russell Wilson. Hope Lazard is ok, we'll need him. Nice throws across the middle. Loved seeing Pete Carroll's reaction to Graham's 3rd down conversion !! Tough challenge ahead, should be plenty of motivation for payback. We're moving on. Let's play like CHAMPIONS and keep this run going. GO PACK !!!!

This game went mostly according to script. AR made some big time throws today. FINALLY! GOOD FOR HIM! GREAT FOR THE TEAM! The only thing that didn't go to script was letting Wilson scramble THAT much. Had to be frustrating to our D. Seattle clearly adjusted at half time and it made a difference. Packers were unprepared for that much Wilson. That should not have happened.
And Wilson's throws on the run were quite impressive.

Is Lazard really ok? Amazing that Adams had that much space sometimes even in double coverage. Clearly Graham was the 2nd read. Did AR give up on Lazard today? We just can't expect Adams to carry that much load.

The main thing I did not like and was surprised about was how often Jones got stuffed quickly.

BS call on the early fumble. And KK - please practice catching a football when they are thrown right to you.

MLF saved the QB sneak for the playoffs. What else has he been saving for next week?
We are going to need a little more of everything.

I'll be watching the 49ers game in the middle of the night oversees next week.
No matter what happens now, the season has been a success.

We discussed the Seachicks D tackles getting low, especially Poona Ford. They clog the middle up. Carroll had Wright and Wagner shooting the gaps to stop Jones. LaFleur finally just put the ball in Rodgers hands where it belonged all Night. Hope Lazard is O.K. Naturally, he didn't see the ball as he was on the bench injured. Kumerow showed he is not prime time and MVS caught his one target.

When the Packers selected Rodgers in the draft after he waited for hours, they axed him if he regrets not being picked by San Francisco.
His answer was "not as much as they (49ers) will regret it.

Well.....they (49ers) eliminated him in 2012 in San Francisco, and in 2013 in Green Bay.

Here we are again.

We don't have to deal with Kaepernick's running thank goodness. But their Front-7 on defense is incredible.
We have to figure out how to keep their DLine off Rodgers.
Now they have Dee Ford back. Plus Bosa & 2 other top10 picks on the DL & they got their #1 LB back.

We lost the 2007 & 2011 playoff games as the better team. it's time to flip that script and win one as an underdog.

Aaron Rodgers was throwing the ball better than he has all year, just in time! Tight, accurate spirals and most of them were caught! The real Jimmy Graham showed up tonight, just in time. So, are we now the worst 14-3 team ever? Ha! Wooohooo, GoPackGo....on to San Fran!

I thought the same on that one camera shot in particular where spiral looked tight with uncommon crispness

Anyone wonder why only 52 on roster today? Leave opening hoping Raven Greene ready to go next week?

Rodgers and Adams were money.
Clark and Smiths-studs.
Does King have bricks for hands?
Remember- SF barely squeaked by this Seahawks team
Pack got a fighting chance

I remember Packers coming out flat and lifeless on National TV and having their asses handed to them 37 to 8 on a game not as close as the score might suggey

I have loved this entire season !!! Every pundit has dogged the Pack all year. Some real tough football games... by a real tough football team. Couldn’t have been any more enjoyable to date. Let’s go to SF and put a cap on this season! GO PACK GO !!

Winning ugly is still winning and I dont care what the negative ninnies say. If anybody would have said ( including me) that we would have said probably not - first year coach - not likely. In any case Conference final - the Bears still suck and the Vikings have another year under their belt without a Superbowl - life is good. Now all that we need is for AR to have a great game with all receivers getting their touches and a 150 yard running game from the other Aaron.

This team didn't quit like the Texas squad. Not too happy with Pettine dropping his guard in the third quarter, but Sullivan was knocked out with the shot to his ribgage, Hollman and Jackson were inactive, leaving Campbell in the dime. Martinez had to spy and he doesn't have the quicks to keep up with Russell Wilson. Fantastic QB throwing on the run. Still my MVP for the 2020 season.

If Garoppolo is any where as mobile as Wilson was..... Green bay will make it a close game. rogers is playing at a higher level.. Jones and Williams will be needed even more so. The defense will have to kick it up another level, or two..And be error free especially against these 49ers..
