Gut Reactions: Packers hang on to beat Panthers

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Panthers.

  • I love having a 1-2 punch at running back.
  • One of the best parts about being at the game is being able to watch Davante Adams run his routes. It's truly art.
  • We're not going to talk about the sequence at the end of the first half.
  • Jimmy Graham saw your Tweets.
  • I'd like whatever demon has periodically possessed David Bakhtiari and made him look like the second coming of Tony Moll to please exit the young man's body. Thank you.
  • Nice to see a classic coffin corner punt from JK Scott
  • Kenny Clark played a hell of a game.
  • No, I told you, we are not going to talk about the sequence at the end of the first half.
  • Saw some nice work from Jace Sternberger in the running game.
  • How about that YAC from Jimmy Graham? Old man can still find some wheels.
  • One of the more impressive catches of the day was Rodgers catching the penalty flag while lying flat on his back in the endzone.
  • Jaire Alexander leads the league in being in position to make game changing plays.
  • That delay of game out of a time out in the 4th quarter made me want to end it all.
  • Where was the screen game today?
  • Elgton Jenkins is all man.
  • Kevin King can be a frustrating watch. Plays really well for stretches and then gives up some easy completions. Just needs some consistency.
  • I SAID we are NOT going to talk about the sequence at the end of the first half.
  • I'm pretty sure the Smiths and those offside penalties took a few years off my life.
  • That said, I love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

this team is going to get crushed by the Vikings at the end of the season. Our offense of line is so inconsistent and Rogers just has not seen the field like he used to. The defense of secondary is probably one of the worst secondaries in the league. Petine Is not the answer for defensive coordinator.

Shut the hell up. Watch the Vikings Cowboys game. Vikings secondary played just as poorly as the Packers. Kurt Cousins is a shell of Aaron Rodgers. Cook is having a better year than Aaron Jones but Jamal Williams is a better #2. Just be happy we're 8-2 amd already beat the Vikqueens. Whiner.

This game took a year off my life. Nerve-wracking in the extreme. But a great game from the Smiths (we won't talk about Preston Smith taking an offside penalty on 4th down at the end, either). But 8 - 2 is great under any circumstances. Go Pack Go!

Great running game which was neglected at the worst possible time in the game. I too will not speak of the 1st half sequence.

Looks like I got the Rams game wrong. Par for the course today. If I get all the rest of the games correct, I'll have a terrible week in pick em. Hmm, I said I'd eliminate a week or two if the participant has a zero. Might have to change that to 3. Or I am taking my ball and going home. :)

The delay of game and the punt seemed, at first blush, really stupid. However, look at the field conditions, the length of the kick, and the strong possibility that missing would put the Panthers somewhere near the 40 yard line. Instead, the Packers decided to take a chance on getting the Panthers to jump. They didn't, but Scott did his job and pinned them at the 10 yard line. So, instead of having less than 60 yards to go for a TD, they had 90 yards. And in the end, that made a lot of difference. Sometimes an apparently stupid decision looks better when given some thought.

I would have gone for it on that fourth down late in the game to virtually ice the win.
Even if we're stopped, they still have to go 60 yards for a touchdown.
Tough decision, though, and I'm glad it worked out in the very end.
I'm shocked the Panthers went for that 2-point conversion.

Nail biter at the end, but we get a win (on my birthday) to go 8-2 before our bye. Rest up, heal up, regroup, review, and game plan for the final stretch.

Hope the Viqueens lose tonight ( damn, it's hard to root for Dallas) . Glad that NO looked ordinary today and lost. Hope SF drops a game tomorrow night.

Our next game at SF is going to be interesting. Go Pack

MLF nearly cost his team the game by not kicking the FG at the end of the first half.

Beyond that there were 3 penalties not called against the Panthers on their final drive. Intentional grounding, offensve PI on the incomplete pass in the end zone and a push off on Kevin King on their 4th down completion.

The Packers OL redeemed themselves during this game. The defense tackling was bad again. It would be nice if our DBs could actually hold on to their picks. Aaron Jones had a great game again. Rodgers played very smartly. Good win. Enjoy the bye week.

There was another one not on your list. The offensive lineman trying to pull McCaffery into the end zone on the final play. You can push a runner but not pull them. 10 yard penalty. The refs were so bad on that final drive. If they had managed to get the ball across, I wonder if replay would void it due to the illegal assistance.

For every person who hated not kicking the field goal at the end of the half there will be one who would have hated if they HAD kicked it. For the record in a game you expect to be close I agree they should go more than one score ahead.

If you expect a close, low scoring game, take the field goal. If you expect a shootout in which the team that scores TDs instead of field goals wins, go for it.

I expected a close game. I didn't expect a real shootout but expected something closer to a shootout than to a low-scoring game. Since only one criterion was met, I can see why there is a lot of disagreement among fans.

Only 3 teams have less payroll into their defense. GB has the highest paid offense in the league. It's on them to win games, the defense is doing as well as could be expected.

By cap. Next year Gute has fixed that imbalance: Z. Smith goes up $10M, Preston by $7.5M, Amos by $3.5M, Clark by $5M if not more, Lowry by almost $2M. I suppose Martinez, Tramon and Fackrell come off the books, but only Tramon makes anything significant by cap number. They will have to be re-signed, or replaced by either an internal replacement, the draft, or FA.

Voila! Next year the defense will have to pull it weight. [Okay, to be fair GB's defense only moves to 16th highest by cap in 2020. Still, offense might go down if Graham ($11.67M), Taylor ($5.9M) and Allison ($2.4M) all get dumped. Maybe Lewis as well. GB might re-sign Bulaga though to offset that significantly, or a WR/TE.]

Carolina put up 30+ against the titans, jags and cardinals. GB forced two turnovers today and Scott had them starting near midfield on two drives. 16 points is a solid showing.

This game should have been won by a larger margin. The fact is this is the highest paid offense in the league, and they're 22nd in 3rd down conversions. Rodgers underthrowing Lazard and Adams on long TD passes, a trend we've seen all year, is more concerning.

Your points are well made. Still, it feels like mistakes are what is holding back offense. I feel like we could score 30 in every game if we’re clean. That’s just what it feels like. The defense, on the other hand, feels like giving up big plays are imminent. I get the payroll issue but we have what we have and need to figure out some tweaks to the scheme. That last drive with the game on the line was what, 17 plays? Geez

Agreed, Id like the defense's production to match the enthusiasm of their trash talk and group celebrations.

Still, I think most fans are oblivious to the massive payroll gap and which side of the ball should be dominating week in and week out. Being league average on defense, with this group, is a big accomplishment for Pettine.

I've been complaining about that all year. Seems like age has indeed caught up to AR. He can still throw it far but he seems to have lost some distance in his judgement. The throw that Adams caught was also short. Though that might have helped in this particular case.

He makes it so much harder on himself too, throwing deep on obvious downs. Use Jones and Williams, let them get their 6+ yards per carry or whatever obscene number it was today, and throw deep after the defense starts to cheat in.

Goes missing in games, has many minor injuries, easily handled by strong o linemen. Makes a big play once in a while to make people think he is great.

- Defense is not confidence inspiring and requires a lot of unforced mistakes at times.
- Defense did hold up.
- Packers D isn't shy about celebrating at any time and after any performance.
- Have to think the defense from last couple of years would have folded.
- Graham is just a mistake waiting to happen. Coin flip on if he will help or hurt team.
- Surprised that they did not run more.
- Horrible blocking on failed run to end half.
- Really didn't think the game should have been as close as it was. Packers kept them in it.

The season has been in part a rehab of Aaron Rodgers to wean him off the adrenaline rush of throwing too many long balls. Some good progress has been made thus far in easing the addiction -- but there was somewhat of a setback tonight.
I like the long ball, and it is indeed a thrill; but it's easy to slip back into the habit of overdoing it. Please, more short and medium throws; and spread the ball around.
Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

Interesting note by Aikman on this play...mentioned that didn’t understand why Rodgers was using a hard count on this play. Likely caused his linemen to be on their heels while d linemen launched at the snap. Could’ve made a difference in the result.

My gut Reactions FWIW
- Defense still Bending and not breaking
-Mccafrey was going to get his but think pack did good job limiting big plays
- need to bring some pressure on 3rd and Longs Vs rush 3
- Rodgers misses some big plays (under-threw receivers)
Deep) & sometime choose deep ball vs 1st Down completion.
-Love AJ & JW beasts!
-Jimmy was giving 110% out there! And I love it!! (Little mishap in end one really wanted him to get that one!)
- good Goal line stand considering the penalties
-8-2 Baby on to SF!!

GB needs to snap the ball earlier, at least some of the time. Bakh whiffed but McCoy beat him off the snap. Bakh normally is the first to move on the OL. Just getting tired of this.

Even though he didn't win the game, I was pretty impressed by K. Allen--some nice throws and nifty escapes from Packer defenders. He's a keeper for the Panthers.

At the start of the season, who would have thought we’d be 8-2 and lead the division?!! Congrats to our GM, Coach, team, and fans. Glad to see fewer injuries after all these years. Now if we can rest those tired bodies after 10 weeks of tough football and improve, we are ready for a great stretch run to finish off the season.

Kick the mutha -UCKING FG MATT! And throw a challenge flag, whole dam stadium was booing the Lazard OPI , WTF WTF! I think I broke a record for saying WTF during the game.

Coaches don't want to throw the challenge flag on PI because they rarely succeed, but in this case it was such an obvious FLOP that LaFleur definitely should have done so.

An old comedian, maybe Mel Brooks or Buddy Hackett, used to tell a joke about a Jewish Mother walking hand-in-hand with her young son on a beach (apologies up front to all Jewish moms out there; their joke not mine). Suddenly a giant wave crashes shore and sweeps the young boy out to sea. Hysterical, the mom screams to the heavens, pleading with the Almighty to return her son. As quickly as the wave took her son, it returns and gently sets the boy on shore at her feet. The mother hugs the boy close, kisses him, looks him over from head to toe, then looks to the heavens and says "he was wearing a hat!"

The Packers are 8-2. I know. I know. If this, that and the next thing then we'll never make the NFC Championship and Blake is a liability and Kevin King isn't TJ Watt and TT had a hole in his marble bag and McMumbles was fat and Murphy let it all happen. If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. He was wearing a hat! This team was fun to watch again today. I'm going to enjoy the damn ride. 8-2, baby!

One commenter has suggested just enjoying the ride, but that's because he thinks GB is short two players and that the team is a year away. I am thinking pretty much the same but I thought a fat guy for the DL or a WR might be available before the trade deadline and so had gotten a little more invested in this team. I guess I wanted the hat as well. Who knows? Perhaps GB can get there and then mumble fake it. No one looks unbeatable.

And I guess your first cousins would be motherless.

It seems good to offer constructive criticism in a win, and to offer some sincere encouragement after a loss.
Your point is well-taken, Leotis, but I don't sense Packers fans here overdoing it with the expressions of concern. It seems we're all enjoying the ride, but it's better to point out the bumps along the way before the car breaks down.
For some of us, maybe it's that 2011 season in the back of our minds -- a sensational 15-1 in the regular season and then a thumping in the first round of the playoffs.

What happened to passes to RB's?
What is causing the plays to be called late?
Lots of small miscues happening. False start, poor return coverage, short punts and then offside penalties. Then they play well for periods of time. Better consistency needed.
The DB's need pass catching practice.

Overall a win and two weeks to heal

My Gut Reactions:

(1) I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE SERIES AT THE END OF THE HALF:

Earlier in the day I watched the Cleveland Browns attempt 11 straight failed plays to get into the endzone from inside the 10 yard line during the same offensive possession. At Home against the Bills. We're talking various versions of failed plays - runs, pitches, passes etc. This Included a false start on their offense to knock them back from the 1 yard line to the 6 yard line during one of the THREE consecutive 4 down series. They went for it on the final 4th down and failed when Nick Chubb was stuffed behind the LOS.

Though the Packers had less plays than this Browns series, I again saw a coach fail to see the forest for the trees. Look at that sequence and tell me differently. There were mistakes. There was an overthrow. There was a stuffed run. There was a failure to get two feet down. There was an inexplicable false start (more on Packers pre-snap penalties to come). Sometimes, the message is right in front of your face: this isn't the drive. Take the points and move on. Instead, the Packers decided to run a single back with no lead blocker into the mouth of the Panthers defense. More on Bhaktiari later. He absolutely whiffed his block. None the less, boy was that a piss-poor series and a terrible decision to close out the half.

(2) Pre-Snap penalties. These continue to be a major major problem for this improbable 8-2 Packers team. Aaron, if you refuse to talk about the sequence to end the half, I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to discuss the Delay of Game penalty during the potential game-sealing drive after the Packers called a timeout to, you guessed it, avoid a Delay of Game penalty. This has been an issue during the McCarthy tenure. It is an issue during 'Petals' brief tenure as HC. To quote Vince Lombardi: "What the hell is going on out there?!?"

(3) David Bakhtiari is not having his best season. Too many penalties of the 10 yard kind. This is not what we're used to. And, frankly, we've been spoiled by his otherwise brilliant play for years. I'll leave it at that.

(4) How do the Packers and 'Petals' not have an option in their offensive playbook to isolate Davante Adams inside the 20 yard line? Has he even received a target in the actual endzone this entire season from inside the 20? I'm serious. I can't think of a single one. How does the leading TD grabber of the past 2 years have ZERO TD's - injury notwithstanding?

(5) That misdirection play to get Geronimo the ball in the far flat one v one with Kuechly (you know the play I'm mentioning here) absolutely has to go. No way. No how.

(6) Is anyone talking about JK Scott punting in cold or inclement weather - ie Lambeau Field in November and December? Those first two punts were utter shanks. 37 yards. Followed by 31 yards? Um, yowza.

(7) Statistically, the Packers are in the bottom 1/3rd offensively and defensively. I wonder where their Return Units and coverage units rank? Go look it up.

(8) Our running game is lethally good. This needs to be the feature.

(9) The Packers Defense continues to give up 20 yards and 20 yard plus plays.

(10) 8-2 feels utterly improbable BUT utterly fantastic. I love the 'will to win' from this team despite their glaring shortcomings.

Geronimo probably isn't the player to make that play go.

Crosby can't reach the endzone. The opposing kicker kicked it deep into the endzone regardless of direction. Crosby also was wide and short on the 51 yard FG that was nullified by a penalty. Agree that Scott tailed off last year as well. If the individuals on STs start to regress, that would complete the journey of special teams toward the dark side.

That was a game! Big plays, terrible plays, big calls, terrible calls! Both ways! And a great end.

I so wanted Rivera's ridiculous decision to go for 2 when down by 8 to be the reason the Panthers lost but I guess this was enough workout for our nerves and my voice.

Great call on Kenny Clark. He was a beast up the middle today. I hope this is just showing he is recovering from his injuries and we will see a lot more of this now.

Amos a couple big deflections today.

So all the doomsayers can relax some now. The Charger game was just an outlier. This may not be a great team yet but hey - they are contenders now. (Random Major League reference - I watched the Bob Uecker doc on the baseball channel rather than pre game shows this morning).

2 other things...although Jimmy G. had a few nice receptions, the opening drive offsides after a 9-yard first down run gave me flashbacks to last week. Destroyed the first drive and led to a 3 and out. Thought it might be another week of playing behind the chains.

I also think Ibraheim Campbell was a nice addition for this game. Seemed to improve our overall play while he was in. Glad he’s back.

Shored up the weakside and Panthers had to split out Olsen from his inline slot at TE to be effective. Let the Packers play Burks on run situations. Missing piece in Pettine system. And yes, he was good today...

Random thoughts. Whew! Tough day with a surprisingly good young Panther QB for the defense. But they kept the ball in front and out of the end zone for the most part. Bend not break, Pettine does it again. Fine a FB, please.. Turf started to freeze up last 6:00 minutes, both teams did well to keep their balance. End of half score (not going there, nope nope..) Rodgers has been short on throws over 30 yards for the most part, whats going on? This O line can pound even when hurt. (When giving a chance) Tuner took a step back today. Jenkins took a step forward. Remarkable growth for the rookie to date. Smith Bros are really something. Roster pretty intact at midseason (rare for this organization.) 8-2 WOW! enjoying the ride. I need a (root) beer.......

So we were better than last week. But, taking that out, we seem to be heading downhill. Very clear D playing dangerously with bend but don't break. Hard to see that working out long term. I'm wondering if Pettine looks at the 16 points and is happy with his game plan. On paper that seems correct. It seems like everyone knows that it won't get us to the SB.

Offense seems to have totally forgotten about using RB's to catch passes. RB's did a lot today but against a defense that is terrible against the run. AR underthrowing receivers is now an undeniable problem.

-This team is damn lucky to be 8-2, but hey we will take it. They are nowhere near as good as that record implies. Just look at where they rank on offense and defense.
-Terrible decision to go for it at end of half and not take the easy 3 points! Effing Stupid! Could have cost the game.
-Rodgers is still holding the ball way too long waiting for big plays to develop and throwing deep when he should be throwing to guys that are open to get the first down. Its infuriating.
-Defense is still a liability. I don't think Kyle Allen is as good as they made him look. It seems we have decent talent so it must be the schemes are just not working. Petine needs to figure it out soon or Gut needs to move on from him.
-Love Aron Jones and Jamall Williams!

Agree! You hit the nail on the head. This defense gives up way too many yards, and Rodgers holds the ball too long and mismanages the snap count (delay of games and unnecessary time outs. Away games with crowd noise is one thing but home games this should not happen. Especially after a timeout. That is unacceptable.

Not taking the 3 points at the end of the half almost came back to haunt the Packers. And Rodgers going deep to many times instead of just moving the sticks just doesn't make sense. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are a better chance of moving the sticks on 3rd down and keeping the drive alive than throwing deep so many times. And giving the opponent extra chances with penalties is not smart football. The game should never have gone to the last second to decide the winner. There were points left on the field that could have sealed the victory long before the last second of the game. It's good to be 8-2 for sure but a better game plan will be needed against the 49er's.

A win, but the same cracks are still there. Allen was the better QB on the field. Rivera had the better aerial attack plan, and had his team better prepared all around.
This seems like a McCarthy team to me. Sloppy execution, penalties, last second snaps of the play clock, etc.

Carolina made quick and decisive throws. GB long developing routes, and seems WRs again struggled to get open. The run game however appears well schemed with deceptions for Carolina and that part is a big reason for optimism.

Regarding the McCarthy piece. One issue I always had with Capers was that he was given young players and ran a very complex scheme... didn't match the system with the players he was given. Many times that was a result of injuries forcing younger guys in.

This packers team started the year as the 5th youngest team in the NFL. My hope is that unlike with Capers, these young guys are sticking around and will develop over time. I would like to see improvement in the exectution/penalties/etc. over the second half of this season.

Thoughts on the game;....Great job by the wide receiving and tight end corps....they showed they could not only catch and run sharp routes, but they also showed they could block, including the kid Sternberger getting some reps. Jimmy Graham....looking more like the weapon we thought he is could be....theres a hex on the offensive tackles.....Bulaga continues to spend more time in the backfield than either running back, and I have to think either Baktiari is fighting through an injury{I suspect back} or he has lost that quick step. Holding calls, false starts, being beaten on the edge and inside tells me somethings up. Best running back pair since Brockington and Lane, or Bennett and Levins- and wait till the kid Williams gets up to speed....The two drives, the one that ended the half, and the last one of the game by the Packers had me wondering if another substance had been mixed with the snow. First and goal at the one with two seconds and you run it up the gut? How about a naked boot or play action? We won't speak of the last drive of the game. Good job by the D to hold up at the end. Great game by Kenny Clarke, and Kevin King continues to improve. Six games to go and we are in the drivers seat folks, its ours to win!! GO PACK GO!!

I really didn't think we would win vs. CAR, as their strengths were our great weaknesses... Have to say, the Packers pulled it out against a tough team for the W, and that in itself is huge. Heading into the bye, we are entirely healthy. I cannot recall, ever, seeing our Packers team head into the bye without one injury. Remarkable. Rookie HC LaFleur is 8-2. Lots left to fix (players, coaches, scheme, game time/situational management, etc), but things are overall very positive. Ibraheim Campbell coming in for his first game with a TON of rust and making some big contributions was worth praise. Nice work by Campbell there.

I've always liked Blake, have seen his glaring deficiencies and I expect better play from him, but Martinez sure did a great job stopping that last attempt by CAR at the goal line with Fackrell, et al. That was nice work. Montravius Adams, Lowry and Lancaster all made positive contributions, as did Kenny Clark. We are fortunate to have Clark, but glad these other guys took some reps off of him and produced. Our secondary is THIS CLOSE to turning games into routes... hopefully they do get some juggs time in. Everyone here knows how badly Jaire wanted that pick six. The Smith Bros., Amos, Savage, Tramon Williams... all making game changing plays. King kept everything in front of him, led the team in tackles, had 2 PDs and 1 TFL. Every CB gives up plays, but they must have short memories there. Despite giving up some completions, and remember, no one can stop the perfect pass and catch, King made some huge plays for us to help pick up the W.

Personally, my greatest takeaway is we have a HC who is instilling a willful rushing attack. 26 carries by our RBs. Fantastic. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are phenomenal. If Matt LaFleur keeps giving his RBs 26 carries as minimum, every game, we will win that Lombardi Trophy. I'll guarantee it.

Running the football keeps the dogs off of Aaron Rodgers' back, allows our own OL to TEE OFF in aggressive run blocking, chews up game clock, wears out the opposing defense, keeps the opposing offense stuck on the sidelines, OPENS UP EVERYTHING in the passing game, and generally produces well balanced, successful offensive onslaughts. It also keeps your own defense fresh. Please, Matt LaFleur, keep THAT pedal to the fucking metal. Aaron will get his throws, and they will be easier for him to complete with a -DEDICATED - POWER RUNNING GAME. Had we done that against the Chargers, we would be 9-1. You can't give up on it.

On STs, Mason Crosby and JK Scott made some game saving plays. Crosby with the quick snap, and Scott with the perfectly placed COFFIN CORNER!

Rodgers played a very smart game. His OL is becoming quite adept with both pass and run blocking, which shows a lot of progress made over the course of our first 10 games, miscues notwithstanding. How about the rookie, Elgton Jenkins? WOW. What a STEAL for Gutekunst at pick #44. Add to all of this, Davante Adams is back, Baby!!! Enjoy this WIN and the bye, my friends.
