Gut Reactions: Packers pummel Lions

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers victory over the Detroit Lions.

Gut rections

  • This defense needs a lead.
  • Dear Father in Heaven, I'm not a praying man, but if you're up there and you can hear me, please let Davante's hamstring be ok.
  • I saw a Lions defensive back's soul leave his body on one move from Davante
  • Way too many drops.
  • Chandon Sullivan got picked on today and answered the bell, for the most part.
  • Jaire Alexander was SO close to a pick six on the opening drive.
  • You don't pay Aaron Jones because he's a running back. You pay Aaron Jones because he's a running back and a wide receiver.
  • Kenny Clark. I miss you.
  • Rick Wagner is a savy vet.
  • Mike Pettine is getting way too predictable. When I can tell his guys are going to drop out of a pressure look into a 3 man drop sitting on the sofa, you can bet opposing NFL players and coaches can.
  • Rodgers yelling at LaFleur for taking a time out was so pure.
  • Safety play is suspect no matter which safety you're talking about.
  • Gary splitting the double team and getting the sack at the goal line was just *chefs kiss*
  • Good game from JK Scott.
  • Two weeks in, this team is absolutely me playing Madden online, Get a lead, and coast.
  • Go Pack Go.

I listened to the TV for maybe five minutes and turned on the radio. The radio was about 6 seconds ahead of the play, but I found that kind of nice after a while, except on a few plays like Jones' long run. I knew the result before I saw it on the screen.

(Aaron Jones)..."Spent the off season working to gain power in the lower half of his body, which is his legs, so he could have more strength and power in his legs"

Greg Jennings is certainly complimentary to the Pack, and knowledgeable- he just too verbose

I tend to agree with you, mostly because of the drama he caused.

But he was 100% correct about the Lions being aggressive on the last possessions of the 1st half.

How many injuries did we have again? Would hate to play the Saints without Davante, Clark, Linsley. Lancaster (?), anyone else we lost?

After the 1qtr. the Packers dominated this game. I think Rashan Gary had his best game as a pro, 2 sacks and 2 QB hits. He helped force Stafford to throw the pick 6 to Sullivan.
Aaron Jones unbelievable. Rodgers would have had another monster game without all the drops. Needs to stop. OL played well.
Loved Dillon’s run to close out the game. Aside from injuries the Packers are looking good. Go Pack Go. Thanks, Since ‘61

Z'Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Rashan Gary are one hell of a top 3 OLB group. I don't watch the other 31 teams enough to rank them as the best group or top 5 or whatever. All I know is that I'm not worried about the Packers edge rush as long as those 3 are healthy.

AR wasn't sharp early. Underthrew the TE, overthrew Jones down the sideline, completely off on the swing pass to Jones, and then later threw behind Davante who made the catch anyway for 17 yards.

I disagree. I thought they were all very catchable balls. The swing pass to Jones was leading. I think they even mentioned that in the broadcast. Of his first four incompletions, I would put at least 3 on the receiver. The jones overthrow down the sidelines was in a good spot (which is the one I held against him). They were just hand checking all the way down the sideline. That slows you down and the ball was half a step too far. They easily lost that hand checking. He was 11 for 15 at that point. The tonyan throw got ripped out. Jace just dropped it. The worst ball of the night that I can recall was the short one to MVS near the line of scrimmage.

Drops were widespread. Lazard had a bad one, Tonyan too, the MVS one in the end zone was a tough one but he had another, but the worst ones were Sternberger. He had a really poor game. I like Dillon. Nice to have a back who can run when the opponent knows it is coming (and not named Jones). Williams played well today too. Nice backfield.

Sullivan not only made an impact, but it seemed to ignite his play on D. Hopefully he now goes forward from there. Jackson made a really nice sideline play. Scott too. Good to see young players getting snaps late.

Didn’t notice Greene. Thought Redmond showed his value. Not quite sure how much credit the D deserves for tightening up. While the Offense was perhaps our best D lineman, the D did improve. Look forward to some analysis of what changed. Very glad to see that we stayed aggressive on D throughout. Gary had a really good second half.

Still, I think the need for another big man is clear. This need will increase as the weather impacts the playing surfaces.

Injuries worry me. Ervin, Linsley and of course Adams. Let’s hope we get all of them back fast!

And yes, Gary has really come on. Hopefully it continues. Glad Gute is a better talent evaluator than me.

What an offense! First back to back 40 pts since 2014. Most run yards in a game since 2003.

Lots of kudos to go around. The plan has been good. The O-line is performing through some injuries. The QB is getting it done. Last week, the WRs led the way and this week it was the RBs. The TE group is the one area that has not come out firing on all cylnders.

Fair enough. To me, it reeked of arrogance, and is not indicative of a vet qb and leader of the team on the field. They were moving the ball well, with no reason to be that upset. ML deserves the benefit of the doubt. I also didn’t like Nagler making it a moment worth praising.

totally agree. I'm an AR lover but that is unprofessional. If I'm a top rate defensive player, does that give me the green light to rip into Pettine during the game? NO, NEVER. Air your dirty laundry during the week. I didn't see anybody publicly throw AR under the bus during the last two years when he was totally out of sync. Big win, plenty to fix and pray for good health going in to next week. GPG

I think it’s arrogant to act in that manner as a response to what the head coach is calling on the field- like he knows better than the coach. Lots of replies on my take-most don’t see it my way- that’s cool. I ain’t always seeing it the right way. I’ve got kids that play , they love AR, and watch the game sitting next to me. I’m trying to raise em resilient, and to value how things are done. If my kid did that, I’d be disappointed. What if he aimed his F bombs at Devante, or AJones when they do something wrong? Probably wouldn’t be viewed with as much forgiveness. Maybe ML should F bomb him next time he misses a wide open RB in the flat with no pressure?

Don't know if you played competitive football, or any sport for that reason, in the heat of the game, adrenaline flowing, guys competitive nature comes out and they react, sometimes, Dear Betsy, with a swear word. Not a thing wrong with what Rodgers did. He wasn't calling out his coach he was pissed because he thought he could score. Nothing to see here.

Settle down Francis-Call me a fan of acting like ya been there before. I thought it made him look small, and lack class and composure. I’ve played the game, it ain’t bridge- but it is a game.

Ever seen a fireman freak out cuz he’s about to go to work? Probably not. Or a surgeon just as he’s done scrubbing up? Those ain’t games, but they require poise. It’s cool when you don’t fall to pieces when ya got a little adversity.

If you are upset about Aaron being upset about the TO call by the coach just remember 2 things, 1) he is a master at managing the game clock 2) Our dumb coach needs to not make the call so long so that Aaron doesn't have to waste all of his TO because of the coach.

Not just 2-0, but a dominant 2-0, especially on offense where every analyst thought they needed a WR weapon for Rodgers. It appears that is not the case.

The Packers coaches and personnel dept draft for their view of the team to play the way the HC wants the offense.

The Packers offense is by far the highest scoring and productive (by yards) in the NFL. They know what they hsve and need, you don't. Every team has weaknesses.

Patrick was up and down. He usually is better in pass pro but he gave up a couple of pressures and a sack. His run blocking was not so good though he did pancake a guy. Jenkins looked good. Linsley is a guy that would be hard to replace if Gute can't find the money to re-sign him. The OL might work out if Runyan comes through and the jury is out on the other two OL draft picks.

I like the way you’re contemplating next year's offensive line two weeks into this season. I’m going to suggest a template.

You release Bakhtiari and Linsley. You move Jenkins to center. You put Runyon at guard. You sign a younger, cheaper replacement for Bakhtiari AND use a Day Two draft pick.

I think if we’re running all these misdirections that maybe we don’t need to spend a fortune on a traditional dancing bear at Left Tackle.

Run defense is terrible????

Reality. Lions held to 89 yards on 21 rushes. Between the time it was 3-14 and it became 34-14 , the Lions didn’t do jack squat, on the ground or in the air. I would call it “clamping down.”

We had a narrow three point lead at the half but the Lions never once snapped the ball with a chance to take the lead. Time of knockout? About 30 seconds into the second half.

They didn’t even have to abandon the run when they were down 24-14. They still had an entire half to work with.
Peterson had a 25 yard run.....take that away and he was 6 carries for 16 yards, His backup was about the same.

Detroit did not run the ball on us ver well. That’s a fact. Adjust your narrative. We stopped the run without Clark. If you’re a Packer fan, you should be happy about that.

I cheered for Josh Jackson's big break up.

I've been talking about his broken confidence for the last year, it was great to see him get a real confidence building moment in a scenario where he has historically struggled- locating the deep ball while in trailing coverage and making a play on it without grabbing the WR.

Couldn't be happier for JJ. Hopefully a turning point in his career.

Jackson got a punt return rep too. He didn't do much with it. But he did it in a real game, not in a practice. I'm not sure if that was because Ervin was hurt or the coaches were trying to get some reps for guys down the depth chart.

Those last 6 minutes, I did see plenty of the latter. Which was a good move. Those reps might pay dividends when the wear and tear of the NFL season forces those guys into more meaningful situations.

Jon Runyan, who was probably OL8 in the pecking order, has been called on in both games so far. It happens and the next man up needs to be ready.

Jace is a very athletic TE who has great tape from college showing good route running and solid ability to pluck the ball out of the air.

Don't know why he hasn't been able to shake the drops as a pro.. but if he can figure it out, he could be a real threat that stretches a defense and opens up the middle of the field.

I don't know what to tell you... Packers D at the end of the day wasn't bad.

Worst drops were at TE. Lazard has a couple, which is highly unusual. My concern at WR is depth not quality after 2 games. Ervin got hurt but perhaps the best catch of the day came from another RB, Jones along the sideline on 3rd down.

Tonyan has a bad drop but came back after and looked to be getting in the groove in addition to a very nice play on his TD. I hope so because Lovett wasn’t Deguara and Sternberger doesn’t look ready this season. If Tonyan continues to improve, perhaps we will be good, but at the moment It’s TE play I think is our weak spot on O.

I was wondering why ESB didn't get a few snaps with all the drops early. I didn't realize he has been placed on the IR.

Gary played well. I personally still compare Watt to King. I need to move on, but it’s tough to not feel that one sting still. TJ is a stud. That might be why others tread lightly with the Gary pick.
AR had a few bad throws, and seems to go into a mild panic when GB is scoring with runs. Might be wrong, but I think he’s still in love with his own stats. This ain’t gonna be a 45+ TD season for him- not that kind of O anymore.
Alexander is a beast. Love watching him play.
Run defense is a concern, but lots to like no doubt.

Anyone who actually paid attention to Gary's play on the field in 2019 is not surprised that he had a day like today.

He showed many good things last season in his limited snaps. People saying he was a bust are the type of people who don't watch football players play football.. They don't know good play unless it's quantifiable on a stat sheet.

I will. You saw his one so so game. Aka Perry I bet he goes missing in action most of the season. The guy is a bust considering where he was picked and what he has done so far. I expect nada from him and he hasn't disappointed so far.

Let's keep it real.

Gary's first sack came at 7:45 left in the fourth quarter when GB was up by 20 points. His half sack came at 3:08 left in the fourth quarter when GB was up by 20 points.

Gary had a nice game. He still had to beat an NFL offensive lineman to get those QB hits/sacks. But they didn't occur when they were most needed, they came when good players take advantage of the game situation.

sacks as a stat are over rated. his plays on the goal line probably don't register on stat sheet but led to a safety last week and a pick six this week. If you start to nit pick the "quality" of his sacks, you better do that for everyone. Nick Perry got rich with meaningless sacks. He's had an excellent start to the season no matter how you quantify it. With his youth and energy, I'm excited to see the season progress. GPG

"Anybody gonna come on and complain that Rashaan Gary is a bust or a wasted pick?"

I've always been cautiously optimistic about Gary, even though I wouldn't have drafted him in that spot. But c'mon... he had 1.5 sacks against a Lions O-line that was missing 2 out of 5 preferred starters... plus the Lions were in a big hole and everyone knew they had to pass. If this is the best that we have seen from Gary after 19 games in the NFL I would think that the jury is probably still out.

Yeah, he had a nice game. People act like it was some sort of coronation.

Two weeks in a row he has had a direct impact with pressure on QB's that have led to interceptions leading to scores. This is after there was constant chatter all training camp about his improved play and intensity/focus on and off the field. To me he is answering the bell and justifying his first round selection so far.

Really liked how the Packers responded down 14-3, BOTH offensively and defensively. The offense seemed to be sleep walking and the defense just flat, but both sides of the ball really played well after the first quarter.

HEY... I'm sorry but Arron Jones CAN have more than 12 to 15 touches a game. Whoever still thinks that isn't paying attention to the Packers last 20 games dating back to last season. Not only can he, he SHOULD get more. 20 last week, 22 this week, all seems good to me.

If this is a sign of things to come for Mr. R Gary, a lot of people are going to be eating crow sandwiches round here. Nice game kid!

Feel bad for Sternberger. I really thought, well hoped he'd breakout this year. Right now I'd settle for a few catches. SHAKE IT OFF YOUNG MAN!

I LOVE this team!

TE is such a hard position for younger guys to make a contribution. We might be looking at the Tonyan and Lewis show at TE for this year while Sternberger gets another year under his belt.

Agreed. That is no different than plenty of other young players. I hope Sternberger is among the guys that grow out of it, not the larger group that becomes consumed by it. I'm cautiously optimistic he will grow out of it.

Hank,
Jace will settle in as he is too good not to be a good TE. Just like MVS he needs to focus more on seeing those passes into his hands. The positive for the GBP's is that unlike the last 3-years Graham is gone and the Packers have better all around TE's to go to until Jace gets it togehter.

I would really like Jones to be healthy in December and January, and that’s more important than touches. He’s so freaking good at getting into the end zone that you want him when you’re near it, but maybe other backs could take some of those touches until we cross midfield.

Everybody should agree that Gary looked good. He’s caused quite a few premature evaluations and hopefully he’ll continue to stay healthy and improve.

Our RBs rolled up over 300 yards in total offense on 35 touches...nearly 10 yards/touch. Dillon can’t get on the field. Rodgers only threw 30 times. This is what the offense looks like when you run more and pass less.

We'll take big gains from A. Jones anywhere we can get them, but I like the gist of what you're saying. Let's distribute the ball more evenly than we did last season (I think we will) and keep our star back more fresh for the end of the season, if possible.

The Packers look downright loaded at RB to my eyes so far. For my lifetime, there is no group of Packer RBs that has been able to top Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher. I think this year's group has a real shot at dethroning that group at the top of the heap.

Although he didn't play I wonder if Deguara has jumped Jace? Deguara seemed so much more part of the O last week. Those drops gotta hurt. Seems he didn't get the MVS love of a quick comeback to get his head back in the game. Maybe 2 drops in a row was Aaron's limit.

I’m OK with Rodgers expressing his anger; he misses absolutely nothing pre-snap. He also knows a few mistakes and the game might have a different result. I sure MLF and the team will be fine.

Jones is special as a RB and as a receiver. I’d like to think he, Bakh and AR (as a group) will need to get with Gute to see how to get them re-signed. Without those two, Rodgers isn’t going to have as much fun.

Can someone explain to this dimwit what happened in the reffing on the Stratford possible fumble. It was ruled a fumble (I think).... the Lions challenge and want it to be an incomplete pass... what I don’t understand if it was then ruled an incomplete pass...then why would the Lions not penalized for the ball hitting the lineman...isn’t that considered an ineligible receiver? Thanks for helping me out?

I know which play you are talking about. Davante was breaking ankles off the line of scrimmage like Allen Iverson.

And it was glorious.

Rashan Gary is going to be awesome as the season goes on. The Packers defense still needs Kenny Clark, as much as they need Avante Adams.. Dillion is going to awesome, along with MVS. And Lazard and Tonyan are going to work their way into the up coming games.. The Defense will be awesome. Can't wait until next week..

Gutey and MLF are young and talented with a no prisoner approach to draft, FA, and on field excellence. Us Packer fans are in a great position to enjoy the success of the team for quite sometime. Really feeling good about the strength of the team at QB with all three QB's. Boyle is under rated IMO. If we can get some talented big bodies on both sides of the line (aka the 49's) this team would be truly unstoppable with the talent they have.

Random thoughts: After the horse collar on MVS, the O line punished Lions DL the rest of the game. Lazard likes to hit people. Is Davante Adams the best route runner in the NFL. His cuts were so sharp you could see the knife edge. MVS is a tough tough player. Defense played well. Forced a top ten QB into a game changing mistake. Playing the Smith Bros and Gary inline with good secondary coverage by both boundary and slot forced Stafford off schedule all game long. SS were better than giving credit for. All about secondary coverage in the 'new NFL'. Rodgers saw something in the Lions scheme. Have to look in the all-22. Young veteran team playing at a high level early on. What's not to like. (Yeah you guys will find something... :-) No Fans in stands. Weird and Strange. I need a (root) beer....

Big play of the game: Lions get called for holding on third down at the end of the half. It stops the clock and gives the Packers a shot with the ball before half. They score, then they get the big run to start the second half and the beating is on.

HUGE PROPS to MVS for bouncing back from the wicked hit on his head/neck on the overthrow along the sideline. Just a few plays later, he made a great catch on a similar one where a lot of WR would have gotten alligator arms.
He may be maturing into a stud right before our eyes.... remember even Davante looked horrible in his 2nd year. It takes time for WRs....
