Gut Reactions: Packers get run over by Eagles

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers loss to the Eagles

  • Jalen Hurts just ran it for another first down.
  • Quay Walker also just missed another tackle.
  • Kenny Clark has completely disappeared. I have no idea why.
  • I get Rodgers has a busted thumb but that is no excuse for either of his interceptions tonight.
  • I also get that Jordan Love looked decent but it's hard to take too much away from that performance other than he was able to run the offense.
  • Oh hey, they handed the ball to AJ Dillon with the quarterback under center and he scored a 20 yard touchdown. I'm shocked.
  • The play where Rodgers broke outside the pocket and then threw a touchdown to Aaron Jones was vintage Rodgers. Just an absurd play.
  • The Packers offense was driving toward the end of the first half by running the ball and throwing short...and then tried to take a shot and it all fell apart.
  • That is one hundred percent a toxic mix of LaFleur and Rodgers. They just can't help themselves.
  • I love Rudy Ford.
  • I get that Rasul Douglas gets beat but I thought he played a decent game overall.
  • Who does Dean Lowry have pictures of?
  • Seriously, watching Joe Barry steadfastly refusing to adjust to the fact that his base nickel is being repeatedly gashed is going to be my villian origin story.
  • Jarran Reed flashed at times tonight.
  • Christian Watson is a cheat code.
  • I appreciate Aaron Rodgers gutting it out this season.
  • Going to be a fascinating week.
  • Go Pack.

Awful defense! But as long as Love starts the rest of the year, tonight was a BIG win for GB's future. Put 12 on I.R. NOW! The season is over. As many of you know, I've been done with 12 for years. Trade Rodgers and somewhat atone for the mistake this past offseason or let him retire. Or, hell, just straight-up cut him if you have to.

#FeelTheLove 🧀

PS: Please also fire Joe Barry and the entire defensive staff. KTHXBYE

Financially, if you really thought Love would be an improvement and you can't find a trade partner, does it not work better just to bench Rodgers and force his retirement? Massive cap hit to cut him

I mostly agree with you however it seems packer nation is split on this. What better time than now. Rodgers is banged up again and can't throw a consistent ball. He probably will need surgery at some point on the thumb. They sit at 4-8. This is not a playoff team. They aren't going anywhere. I say rip off the band aid now. No need to keep going while getting dimishing returns. Let Rodgers heal and play Love the rest of the year. Then make a decision on the both of them after the season. Both the eagles and niners tore down teams multiple times this last decade. Were bad for a few years and in the niners case were back in the playoffs in year 3 bouncing our ass from the playoffs AGAIN. Barry needs to go now. Too many young players on defense need further development and I don't want his defense screwing up their careers.

Why just Barry? Hasn’t it become painfully obvious Gutekunst is below average and MLF was just a mirage?? Rodgers carried these imposters for three years. Aaron is done in Green Bay.. so is this staff. Special teams coach RB is a proven commodity that will land on his feet ( if not retained)

They collectively count for a HUGE portion of the salary cap. Rodgers is old and a constant headache (also obviously regressing as a player), Cobb cant stay healthy for more than 8 games, Bakh's knee will likely never be right, Crosby is obviously washed, Tonyan clearly isnt the player he was pre-injury and is already 29, and Lewis is an old one way player that gives them absolutely nothing in the receiving game. "Running it back" has failed miserably. A mistake only becomes a mistake when you refuse to correct it. If you want this team to get back to their winning ways, they need to reinvent themselves with an infusion of young and affordable players and that cant happen till the old guys move on. The era effectively died in january but nobody wanted to accept it. Many of us here screamed it from the rooftops all offseason but nobody wanted to listen. How many more seasons of bad football from old and expensive players are you willing to stomach before youre willing to venture into the unknown?

I've been wondering about Clark's health for a few weeks now. Tonight, his left arm jumped out at me. He's clearly trying to protect it.

If there is an injury, they should IR Clark for his own good at this point and let him get healthy.

Their highest recent draft pick on the oline is Andre Dillard, who isnt even a starter. Their oline looks great because they run the piss out of the ball and wear down defenses. Even the Bears do this and their oline is laughable. Its not that the eagles oline is great. Their playcalling plays to their strengths. Something the Packers have been adament about not doing for years.

I don’t agree a lot with you but your spot on with everything you said. Rodgers needs to be done to evaluate love for the season. And Jaire is getting paid too cb money to be average. And Dean Lowry has no right on this roster. Play the rookie over this jag. Tired of watching him looking lost and pushed around every play starting to get old. Also on prime time the replay of 94 every play just makes you sick of what he doesn’t do and looking baffled why he just got tossed around.

It's amazing, how do they not see Lowry being handled so easily? He's pushed one way then the other, and then usually ends up on his back. I think that's a big part of Clark's problem, there's just no help next to him. What are the coaches watching?

Kenny Clark is clearly playing injured.

He's off the field more than he's ever been and his left arm looks useless. You can watch and see that he's often rushing and only using his right arm when he's got a one-on-one. He's almost not even trying to reach out and tackle with his left arm. When he's trying to hold a double he looks like he's trying to hold it together with tape.

Why no one has asked the Packers about Kenny's health is beyond me. It's been like this for 3, 4 weeks now.
Tonight it was especially obvious. That left arm is a problem. Torn pectoral or bicep? Separated shoulder? Nerve damage? something's not right.

Don't hold your breath.

Until they announce Rodgers to IR, I don't trust this organization to have the intestinal fortitude to actually do the unpopular-but-best thing for this organization, which is to bench Rodgers and play Love the rest of the 2022 season so they can make the most important decision for the next 10-15 years of Green Bay Packers football.

Deciding to either hold on to Love or start looking for another potential QB of the future should be THE biggest question to answer for the remainder of 2022.

Oppy and Bearmeat....spot on!

I agree that the two series by Love during a 2-minute drill while behind on a Sunday night game against the best team in the NFL is not enough data to truly evaluate a recently turned 24-year old QB, but DAMN he looked GOOD....DAMN GOOD!

Any Packer fan who watched Love perform tonight and who did not think the same you obviously hate the idea of change. Love looked so good in the two series that if he continues to play like that then we all know LF needs to be fired immediately as Love should have been playing ever since the Chicago game. Maybe the Packers would have had a chance at post-season if LF had played Love instead of an injured Rodgers. Love looked exponentially better in the (I believe) 7 passes he threw than Rodgers has all year IMO. Should Love continue to play well not only would the drafting of Love define the legacy of Gutey just like Rodgers did for TT, and Favre thru a trade defined Wolf. Personally, the way Love played was what I have expected from him all year. I have believed since before the Packers drafted Love he was a real talent that just needed experience. I have never lost my faith in Love and tonight he justified my belief in him. Just maybe the Packers have their next QB for the next 15-years.....yes....in 15-years he would be turning 39-years old during the 2037 season....just like Rodgers is turning 39-years old this season. Think about Love continuing to develop and learn for many years yet at the helm of the Packers offense. I'm jazzed!!!

That one arm pass rush is actually a common move called a "stab." Is it possible Clark just isnt that good anymore? I know hes "only" 27 years old but he was drafted when he was 20. Hes got a lot of miles on his tires too. And hes set to count for $20 mil against next year's cap. I dont see him coming back next year which is likely why they drafted Wyatt and arent in a rush to put him on the field yet. Been saying all this since the moment they drafted Wyatt.

Not on the Leonhard bandwagon, just making a wise-ass observation on the state of his career choices. He rolled the dice on becoming Badgers HC and crapped out. I wouldn't necessarily hold that against considering him. But they should fire Barry in time to do a more expansive search.

To proclaim Jordan Love a future superstar after this game would be as rash as presuming him a bust before this game; but it seems fair to be excited about his promise after what we saw tonight.
With Watson, Dillon, Lazard, Doubs, and Toure to go along with Love, the rebuild on offense may be faster than expected. Perhaps keep Jones around for another season or two, as well.
Of course, there's the matter of the defense . . .

I'd try to keep Crosby because he is still very good, highly professional, experienced in the cold, and proven in the clutch.
A kicker is like a closer in baseball in that a reliable one is needed for a young team to eke out the close games for victory.
Keep Crosby for at least one more year for the rebuild, as well as Aaron Jones. We need some key vets with character to go with the young guys.

Watson just proved how much this team needs a deep threat with crazy speed. Or any real one since Jordy. I guess not drafting any since was a smart idea. Too late to salvage anything now to make a difference. Maybe if this group of coaches had any brains and didn't insist on putting Amari Rodgers out there the season wouldn't have been such a disaster but there's more to build on for next year. Toure has to be up next. The future is here sooner than expected so why wait. Give us something to watch that is exciting.

Who gets fired first? This season was so disappointing on so many levels. Maybe MLF is blaming it on AR and/or visa-versa. And we had some significant injuries. But Barry has to go and IMO, so does MLF. Which will mean a total rebuild. It's just hard to see almost anything positive in this season. It all fell apart early and MLF couldn't fix it - yet again. Why should we keep him?

Packers are not that good compared to good teams.
Rodgers looked old.
They needed to score before the half and then score first in the second half. Didn't happen and I thought that was the game because they were not going to stop Philly.
I don't know if it was play calling or what, but the offense just dies some series.
Where was the decision not to play Nixon about 8 to 10 weeks ago. Just UNBELIEVABLE!!
Play Love for the balance of the year. Need to see what he can do. He needs to use his legs to be effective.
This is a poorly coached team. Just so many issues and slow to react.
Watson will be a factor. Especially if teams crowd the line of scrimmage.
Why doe Tonyan stop and not just keep on running with the ball? Does anyone else see that?

I guess the DC who helped lead the Lions to their ignominious 0-16 season wasn't the guy to turn Green Bay's defense into a contending unit, who knew?

The 2022 Packers are a special kind of awful in all phases and no one escapes blame here, but the one person who needs the boot most is Joe Barry. How do you allow 363 rushing yards in a single game? How?

It was fun watching Christian Watson gallop past defenders and I liked what I saw from Love in limited snaps, at least. A little treat for all of us suffering through this cursed season.

I just cannot continue to watch this defense give up 3rd and longs (or stop them and promptly give up a 4th and short).

The fact that the Eagles set rushing numbers not seen in their franchise since 1948 should be reason enough to question the competency of the defensive leadership. Couple that with allowing the worst-ranked air offense of the Titans to have a season-high passing attack last week, and you have unquestionable negligence should they allow Joe Barry to continue the season…

363 rushing yards allowed by the Packers defense. Can't win games when you can't stop the run. Another embarrassing performance by the defense. They just can't tackle. It's pathetic.

Christian Watson has unbelievable speed. His TD was amazing!!!

Love made some excellent throws in his short time in the game. No reason not to see him start for the rest of the season.

Dillon ran hard and played great in this game. Aaron Jones was Aaron Jones.

Joe Barry never gets hired if Leonard had just accepted the job in the first place. But then theres another thing to consider. He played the bulk of his career for Mike Pettine. Is that really what we want? Another Pettine guy? I know hes a Badger alum but come on. Hes not the only guy who can coordinate a defense.

Nixon ran with attitude also. It was a rare bright spot this year. Kudos to Bisaccia.. this unit was historically bad last year and he made them respectable.. something they hadn’t been in YEARS.. even if MLF is let go ( doubtful after an extension) I hope Bisaccia is retained.

The only way we would have had a shot was if we controlled TOP with Dillon and Jones, shortening the game and keeping the Eagles offense off the field. But of course we did not--only 21 rushing attempts.

A couple of our D-linemen may be athletic, but overall this unit isn't strong enough to get the job done vs. a great OL like the Eagles. They couldn't even stop them at the end of the game when they knew the run was coming. K. Clark was handled by Kelce. Lowry, LOL. Walker was the main culprit with the missed tackles, but others, including Douglas, whiffed as well. We would have fared better if Campbell been able to play.

This game reminded me very much of the 2012 playoff loss to SF, where we gave up 325 rushing yards, 181 to the quarterback. Disgusting.

A few bright spots, all new guys: Watson, Ford, Nixon (finally someone with vision and speed in the KR dept.), Enagbare, and Hollins....

And Love. He was decisive, mostly accurate, and took advantage of the opportunity that arose. That's all he can do. Looking forward to seeing much more of him for the rest of the season.

To be fair, we only had 21 rushing attempts, but also, only 16 passing attempts.

This one truly was on the defense's inability to get off the field.

2 INT's didn't help.

But the attack was actually run-heavy.

Only way to win was winning the TOs. Only way this team will ever win unless Houston somehow gets on the schedule.

A friend of mine texted me tonight after Rodgers hit the locker room, saying this:

"Coach is super happy that he can talk to his QB during the game."

It is both funny, and tragic, because it's 100% TRUE.

I don't GET the down-votes myself Oppy but I gave you a thumbs up. I suppose it's admirable they (the downvoters) continue to support MLF and Rodgers. God knows I've been blinded but sheer homerisum myself.

The facts are it IS both funny, and tragic, and IT IS 100% true.

MLF said he's keeping Barry,.I guess that means they both need to go.Sean Peyton would b awesome,..
Love looked a 100% better..But in order to win a game we have to score at least 41.
Watson reminded me of James Lofton .
A beautiful sight to see.i don't understand why Nixon wasn't returning kickoffs from the beginning of the season. How come when a defensive player makes a great play we them out ?

MLF already needed to go. Barry, and I’ve cut him more slack than most, had a game that should end his tenure tonight. That D is just broken.

Then again, LaFleur was praising Drayton till the end. These are all links in the same rusted chain and really all need to go before we have a chance at real improvement in culture, approach and outcomes.

Im finally there C-Dub. As much i believe in Lafleur's alleged offensive scheme, he just isnt a leader of men. Ive pivoted to hoping for a defensive minded head coach. Someone with an edge and some grit. Someone who will build a strong foundation and culture condusive to winning when the going gets tough. My early candidates are Dan Quinn (Head coaching experience and super bowl expierence with Seattle, Atlanta) and Demeco Ryans (rising coach, former hell raiser linebacker who gets the most out of a talented 49er defense.) Would be happy with either. Teams with defensive head coaches tend to do 3 things really well: Defense, special teams, and run game. Sign me up. After were done with that, trade Rodgers and cut his entire click of buddies (Bakh, Cobb, Tonyan, Crosby, Lewis, etc). The old guard must be put out to pasture if the new regime is to have a chance at building anything meaningful here.

Why wasn't he returning before? Maybe the coaching staff doesn't assess talent well. Just a thought.

I must have watched a different game. I saw Barry change to single deep safety pretty quickly after getting gouged on a few runs.

I can't fault his scheme when players were in position to make plays all game long and whiffed on tackles. The problem isn't scheme, it's lack of talent. No defensive coordinator would look good with this roster. 2 wasted 1st round picks this year. Between Gutey and Thompson, neither has accurately assessed and drafted good D talent. The 3-4 relies on good linebackers to make plays, which we haven't had for a very long time.

Draft a couple decent D linemen, switch to 4-3, and our below average (other than Preston Smith) linebackers will be adequate. The good news is that we should have a very good draft position.

Yeah he switched to single high, but it was with nickel and dime with only 2 down linemen. He'd rather give up a million rush yards than risk having a disadvantage in the pass game. Look at the 49ers for example. They dont care how many receivers you put in there, they NEVER give up the line of scrimmage advantage with the bigs. Barry, just like Pettine before him, doesnt give a single f*** about controlling the line of scrimmage. He calls this defense like a scared little man. No guts, no glory.

Remember too the 49ers put a lot of pressure on an o line in their base. We don’t have their talent or coaching

Let’s all understand: firing Joe Barry is not the answer… firing Gutekunst, MLF and the entire staff is the answer. ( ST coach RB could be retained)
If they fired Barry now, it would make me think they are keeping MLF. He will never have another winning season here. Totally inept , all his success can be traced to the coattails of AR. Rodgers is done here, so is MLF.
Talking about Watson or Love is a waste if MLF is still the coach, and Gutekunst the GM.

you didn't go far enough... Mark Murphy is the guy that should go. He is the one 3 or 4 years ago decided that he needed to change the pecking order and took back full control of the football operations by saying EVERYTHING MUST PASS BY HIM FIRST

when Bob Harlan took over the club he separated the business side from the football side and that is when everything changed. Now you can blame Gutekunst but I feel like the only reason for Murphy to take that control back is because HE wants to make those decisions. I believe Murphy has no accountability so Gutey is just taking the fallout like a good soldier does.

Keep Gute. Fire the coaching staff. Gute's job is to procure talent. Hes done that. The coaching staff on both sides have wildly mismanaged that talent. Thats not on Gute, who didnt hire any of these coaches.

- Nixon had more kick return yds in one night than Amari Rodgers has had all season.

- Love’s throws looked pretty good

- At times it seemed like the defense lacked effort, even in the beginning of the game

- What’s with the runrunpasspunt to open second halves? MM’s teams used to do that, too. If that’s your plan, don’t defer! A team that has had trouble scoring should not be deferring anyway.

Lack of talent, poor tackling, questionable coaching and a front office that can't evaluate college players and free agents is the major problem. It's not the fault of one man this problem goes much deeper. They need to clean house in the front office. Bring in a new GM and President/CEO. Then begin making adjustments in the coaching staff. I'm afraid were headed into a long rebuild period for the Packers. Having two of best QB's in the NFL for the past 25 years and all they have to show for it is two Super Bowls. MGT has failed IMO they could have done and won a lot more. They really missed a golden opportunity, like the Patriots did with Tom Brady. They surrounded him with talented players. SAD..!

i believe that for the most part every team has the "talent" to be winners...what separates the great talent from the average is the ability to make plays consistently rather than just once in a while. we all hear about "putting players in the best position to make plays" but some coaches are better at that than others. you mention TB, but that team never missed a beat when good players were let go for cap reasons, they just picked up someone else and still seemed to be good. COACHING... look at Mahomes, right now, they have new receivers, (including MVS) that GB thought wasn't good enough, they just keep on doing what works...COACHING

Well MLF defended Barry in his presser today. Not that it wasn’t coach speak. But why would JL even want to come here? Salary cap hell and some severely overrated defensive players.. many to be cap casualties too. Martindale would have been the hire.. we missed it, now the NYG are competitive with a nothing offense.

Poor Tackling- Change of safeties is going to save cap. Lowrey and Reed are not enough. Clark must be hurt. Just stop the 2 front!
IOL - Problem is Myers! Unless the QB is under center. He just can't pick up a simple stunt. Won't block beyond 5 yds.
He Lets the DL set. Before he hikes it to Rodgers.( in the shotgun.) Just not on the same page with Rodgers!!
I suggest a Tom Experiment instead of Myers. Thought Jenkins did better, but how do you pay him?
Watson was worth the trade up.
Love did great, until Jones dropped a perfect pass. I saw improvement. But until this OL becomes a wall. There is No way he will have the confidence needed. I believe both QBs should be back next year.
