Gut Reactions: Packers breeze past Falcons

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers victory over the Falcons.

  • This team.
  • Incredible what you can do without drafting a wide receiver.
  • Big Bob Tonyan season.
  • Tough moment for Shepherd.
  • Keke had a nice game.
  • Hated the 4th down call on the goal line.
  • Speaking of the goal line, how do the Falcons allow Aaron Jones to be THAT wide open on the first TD
  • Why does everyone freak out when Aaron Jones isn't in the game? They're saving him. Chill.
  • Loved the throwback on 4th down, What a call.
  • Za'Darius was active as hell tonight. Loved the Breonna Taylor shout out and the Kenny Clark dance.
  • Jamaal Williams doesn't produce big numbers but he's a hell of a football player.
  • Did the Packers get Dan Quinn fired tonight?
  • Why is Aaron Rodgers rolling out on a keeper when he's injured?
  • I fucking love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Those anouncers where like the WAC C team.

MLF was in some rare territory in that record after twenty games stat they showed. Did anyone else catch it? I think it was tied with George Siefert at 17 - 3 and 1 game behind Tom Landry. DAMN!

MM's Scheme has the Cowboys #1 in total offense in 2020. The scheme is fine.

What LeFleur inherited was a talented QB who didn't want to take coaching or play the scheme anymore.

To LeFleur's credit, he's found a way to get Rodgers back into playing professional football instead of sandlot ball. He looks fully bought in at this point, and it's a great thing for the Packers.

It is more than scheme. The Cowboys are 1-3. It is sloppy management. In time, Dallas and Jerry will see it.

The Cowboys are -7 in turnover differential which is last. They are also 1-3 so I am wary of cherry picking total yards stats.

Passing stats:
7th in scoring, 1st in passing yards, 8th in Yards per Attempt, 11th in passer rating, 3 INT, tied for 4th (13 teams have fewer, still top half of league), 15th in completion percentage, 10th in first down percentage, 1st in passes of 20+ yards, 17th in sacks allowed and sack yardage.

Rushing Stats:
23rd in Rush yards, 18th in YPC, 6th in Rushing TDs, 13th in rushing 1st downs, 7th in rushing first down percentage, 27th in the league in rush ball security (26 teams have fewer fumbles while running the ball).

Now you can't accuse me of "cherry picking" stats. It's a very good offense with a shitty defense that's forcing them to play unbalanced football.

It's a lot easier to pass effectively when the defense doesn't bother covering all the pass catchers. I've seen secondary play that bad but not often. And not that I can recall when the Packers were taking advantage.

And have a night, Robert Tonyan. He's everything I hoped Jace Sternberg would be.

He's not going to catch 98 yards and 3 TDs every week but I think Tonyan is the real deal. I also continue to have hope that Sternberger can be a productive player as well. It could be one heck of a 2 TE look in 2021.

The 90s were a different time but I'm thinking about Mark Chmura and Keith Jackson combo.

Long way for both Tonyan and Sternberger to get to the level of those two. But I think the arrow is pointing the right direction for them.

Just think back to the SF game to remeber how it feels to be on the other side of that. If the players become better at communicating, recognition and discipline along with the Packers scoring like they do, they can now compete with SF at SF full strength.

Those were some of the most lifeless deflating announcers I’ve ever seen/heard would have been better off using Ben Stein. Anyway nice clean game from the Packers defense didn’t make an inferior opponent look good, the offense was sharp and still left points on the field which is crazy.

Re: Why is Aaron Rodgers rolling out on a keeper when he's injured?

Well, I'm guessing because he wasn't.

Replay shows Rodgers jam his right toe into the turf, seems to potentially have twisted his right knee just afterwards.

Cut to sideline; Rodgers is seen slightly wincing while grabbing his LEFT toe, then grabbing his LEFT knee.

Can't explain it, but I believe it's something akin to playing possum, maybe.

This game felt like the Packers were treating this one like a major college football power playing a school with a direction in their name. That really says something for the level of talent on this beat up squad.

Packers get stuffed at the one once and ONLY get 30 points because the Falcons possessed the ball for some long drives.

There really seems to be buy in from QB12 and the whole offense that they just know these plays are designed well and are going to work. That 4th down play was amazing. Rodgers had to choose which wide open receiver to throw it toward.

The Falcons moved the ball consistently but in the end 16 points. Everyone expecting Atlanta to score 30 in this one so hmm, maybe there's some hope that once cold weather hits we might see some D played. Up the middle was pretty stout all night and in total running backs only totaled 70 yards for the Falcons.

I was ridiculed for taking Big Bob as my last round TE in several fantasy leagues. Well I am the one laughing now. I was behind by 30 tonight and had Tonyan and the Packer D, so I won that one.

Rodgers is rejuvenated. Take out the top 2 WRs, put Jones on a limited pitch count and he'll go 27-33, 327 & 4 for a 147 QB rating using TEs & RBs. That can only happen when the coaching staff and QB are in perfect sync and both are at the top of their game.

It's really fun to see this kind of offense again after a few lackluster offensive years.

Want to rewatch but our depth did plenty and our D managed to keep a high scoring (despite injuries) offense to less than 20. Looking forward to looking more closely at who did what on the D, but despite a ton of injuries, I though that this was probably their best outing. Pleased to see decent tackling and more swarming to the ball. Nice play by Amos to break up the 4th down pass in the end zone.

Just listened to you (Nagler) say that as long as the Packers have AR and this OL, it doesn't make a difference about not having (good?) receivers. ??? Maybe it's because AR is playing the in MLF's system now that is scheming players open and not holding on to the ball too long - which is what almost everyone was asking from him last year. Ty summers made some plays. Hes undersized. Id roll with him. Barnes played more than he did it seemed like. They missed alot of tackles 5 yards in the backfield but still made the play at the los. Josh jackson missed a few tackles. Savage missed a tackle 5 yrds in the backfield then got up n made the tackle 2 yrds in the backfield. Wasnt perfect but the fire was there for 4 quarters. 16 points. Against a good offense.

The one thing Lafleur is getting wrong consistently is his play calling on downs within 5 yards of the opponent’s goal line. Dillon should be part of some of those, both as run and decoy, which would help with the sudden predictability that takes hold.

Ignoring arguments on something that’s a lot more murky than claimed and nothing to do with football.

Rodgers has been a maestro through the first four games. Without his top two receivers he sliced and diced the Falcons using his TE's and RB's as receivers. J Williams has eight receptions for 95 yards and A Jones had 5 for 40 and 71 yards rushing. Tonyan had 6 catches for 98 yards.

Whether it was D Adams first game, MVS, Lazard third game, the RB's or Tonyan this game, Rodgers is using everyone and the results have been impressive. He's not taking very many hits or leaving the pocket unless the play was designed for him to roll. Very few throwaways and has he come close to throwing a pick?

Best I've seen him since he thought they might run the table in 2016.

Don't know why it's so painful for people to see that the biggest change in the Packers is in the way #12 has been playing.

Not taking many hits or leaving the pocket-
he's getting rid of the ball on time, going through progression and delivering the ball to the open receiver in rhythm instead of ignoring options if his preferred target isn't open yet.

Rodgers is using everyone-
he's going through progression and delivering the ball to the open receiver in rhythm instead of ignoring options if his preferred target isn't open yet.

Seeing Julio Jones go out for aggravating his hamstring injury made the Packers’ decision to rest Davante look pretty smart.

Some poor tackling, like on the Gurley touchdown run. They need to work on that.

And we saw for the 2nd time this year a scenario where we can’t punch the ball into the end zone from the 1 yard line. They need to fix that.

But all in all a fantastic game. 4-0! MLF and Rodgers have got it going on!

Packer defense is a lot better than most of the league. Being together for a full year makes a huge difference. Making Matt Ryan look like Nick Foles, that's impressive. Execution in all phases of the game at all levels, outstanding coaching. Take a bow MLF. More depth on this team than understood. Very surprising. All hale Gute. You are simply being honest Marp! Most people on here simply didn't see what Big Bob brought to the team.

Have from the get go seen Bob's upside and potential. MM never could recognize it and get him on the field. Biggest weakness of MM was inability to (1) recognize talent (2) game plan to his players strengths.

While fan of Gute when he resigned Graham it blew my mind knowing what we had in Tonyan. Last year's hip injury was extremely disappointing and limiting him from blossoming.

Tonyan went undrafted in 2017 and got signed by the Lions to their PS..didn't get signed to the Packers practice squad until week 12 of the 2017 season.

In 2018, Tonyan got 191 special teams snaps and 67 offensive snaps. He was playing behind Jimmy Graham, Marcedes Lewis, and Lance Kendricks.

Does that translate to MM being unable to recognize talent and game plan to his players strengths, or could it be that Tonyan was an inexperienced, young player that was #4 on the depth chart due to talented and veteran players in the TE room?

The only reason Wisconsinites freak out about Jones not being in the game is because they’re used to watching starting Badger RBs owning 30+ carries a game without blinking an eye. To see a back-up taking in double digit touches on a score that’s less than a 20 point margin is downright questionable “up in these parts, ya know?”

How about Lancaster? He has really stepped up his game. Like the 23rd ranked IDL on PFF grading system. Lowery is the weakest link - - Goodbye ...

Lancaster played well. M adams made another nice play against the run too shedding his block. Raven greene and kevin king also played well against the run. The d was playing with a real fire. All the d tackles had at least one run stuff. And the lbs and dbs were in the backfield alot. I love watching the defense when they play up to their ability. Its up to pettine to keep them up there

There was no prevent D displayed. Kept the pressure on and let the secondary play to the ball.

Terrific play by Rodgers and his utility box of WRs. Of course the Packers don't need elite WRs to defeat teams like Atlanta with terrible pass defenses, but the lingering question remains whether we can defeat the best teams with top secondaries with the current group. Good teams are constantly looking for ways to improve and the Packers would do well to consider adding a top WR to the roster if only for added depth. I realise this runs against the Nagler party line who mysteriously refuses to admit that the Packers lack depth at the position and would improve significantly with the addition of a standout wideout. Now let the haters weigh in...

The Packers have enough WR talent and we still havent seen ESB on the field yet. Finally the Packers are utilizing their TE's to go with their RB's.

Pretty easy to defend one very talented WR. The beauty of the Packers passing game is the diversification making it damn near impossible to stop as long as the fat boys upfront give #12 time.

1. Hank is right. I have hardly ever seen a back 7 play as poorly as Atlanta did tonight. Yes, we won with the backs and TEs, but our WRs are JAGs and worse - especially without Davante, Lazard and Funchess. This is what happens when you don't reinforce a position through the draft for 3 years and in the first 2 days of the draft in 6 years.

2. Nagler with the snark after a win over the shell of an NFL team. I get it. But big yawn. Quinn should be fired very soon. The Falcons are already counting down the days to week 18.

3. Last comment on social justice: I have absolutely no interest, zero, zilch, nada... in discussing Ms. Taylor or Mr. Floyd or Kaepernick or any other social justice figure on CHTV. I respect Z's opinion as a human being, and I enjoy watching him play well on my favorite team. But I didn't give his message a 2nd thought after it happened. Until now. I come here for sports, and my opinions on any other matters are my own to keep and to share as I choose. This platform is Nagler and Behnke's, and they can do with it whatever they choose. Going forward, I will choose to ignore whatever they say about it, and no that doesn't make me a rube, or a racist, or whatever. It makes me indifferent to their ongoing thoughts about social issues. Moving on.

4. This is a good team. The TEs and RBs are outstanding, which is making up for our lack of depth post-Lazard injury, post-Funchess opt out, and post-Davante injury. Gute seemed to gamble correctly. Good on him. Let's hope a better opponent doesn't exploit the weakness, because it is very real.

5. Now about DT...

6. GPG. Ho-hum win over a reeling team. Last year this would have been a nail-biter. We've got a shot in January.

Oddly, I thought DT play last night was encouraging and somewhat of a bright point on the night.

Agreed. But a broken Todd Gurley on a team down 2 scores most of the night who is 0-3 and counting down the days until the season is over is hardly the marker of improvement...

Except for the 10 minute Falcon drive in the 1 st half the Packers pretty much dominated this game. Their OL is doing a great job with the run and passing game. Rodgers is just a maestro in this offense.

Defense still needs to work on tackling but we’re 4-0 so it’s all good.

I don’t like the early bye but we need it to heal up our guys. I’m not crazy about 12 straight games without a brake but that’s the schedule so here we go. Thanks, Since ‘61

Its only his second season with this team and he is looking like a football genius Matt LaFleur congratulations. There are four teams with an 0-4 win/loss record with the trading deadline approaching any chance Gute is looking around for additional help at ILB or D-line...? The fire sale will begin very soon. Thank You Nags - GO PACK GO

Aaron Rodgers should get with the gang when they pose flexing their muscles and bravado to the camera after a TD rather than arriving late to the party to flex in the camera alone. Gotta work on that Aaron!
