Gut Reactions: Packers beat Jerry Jones' sad excuse for a football team

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Cowboys

  • The Packers took on the Cowboys today and it was something
  • Aaron freaking Jones baby.
  • That Bob Tonyan catch was insane.
  • Za'Darius Smith doing the Ray Lewis dance after Leiws called out the Packers defense was everything
  • Jaire had a tough start to this game, despite the pick. Just needs to settle down early. Brutal play on the TD he gave up late though,
  • Hell of a bounceback from Will Redmon. Great game.
  • Speaking of young DBs....Chandon Sullivan!
  • The Packers coaching staff did a GREAT job taking advantage of what the Cowboys put on film this year
  • Marcedes Lewis tight end screen for the win
  • Can we stop letting Mason Crosby make tackles please?
  • That was an incredible effort from Kevin King all game long. Capped off by his INT.
  • Kumerow came so close to being Touchdown Jesus
  • That's a hell of a game fron Lucas Patrick at center in place of Linsley
  • Preston Smith bullied the Cowboys all day
  • The crazy thing on the TD over Tramon is that if the QB doesn't get hit, it's probably not a TD
  • Being live during the game reminds me how fataslistic some Packers are
  • Not feeling the play fakes out of the shotgun.
  • I need a smoke after that game and I don't even smoke.
  • That rouging call on Gary followed by Kenny Clark geting hit by a blindside block and not getting flagged is peak NFL
  • Lots of work to do, but I absolutely love this team.
  • Go Pack GO.

Big props to the o-line too. A couple of plays that they'd like back - but they turned up when they needed too. Better play from the TE group too (coming off a low base).

(1) It's hard to win in the NFL, especially on the road -- and the Packers just won on the road!!!
(2) Aaron Jones is wondrously wriggly.
(3) Coach LaFleur has a good presence on the sidelines. Z-Smith, while great as a player, may want to talk less.
(4) For the first three quarters or so, Aaron Rodgers showed some creative craftsmanship leading the offense with short passes for big results. Good sign!

Starts to right the ship after that Philly loss last week.

Getting healthy for a Detroit team coming off its bye will be a challenge...

Agree on Z smith talking less. Also didn’t like the Aaron Jones wave TD run. He’s better than that. Jaire had his hands full today-woulda liked him to play a bit softer at the end. Lots of heart shown by King- obviously playing hurt-Love when 12 doesn’t need to be Superman

Seems like it's our fate at times. Shit happens but ever since the Cotton and Ice Bowls. Dallas has been able to get sympathy from the refs. Or so it seems. America's team and all. But Rodgers thankfully changed all that.

We’re the refs or the Packers trying to get that game within the 3.5 point spread?

Happy that the Packers won but I don’t like giving up nearly 600
yards on defense. Some poor tackling and bad coverage. Fortunately the 3 picks and Cowboy ineptitude saved the day. Is Jason Garrett a jadrool or what?

Big win on the road against a conference rival. Aaron Jones was huge today. Hopefully our injured guys can recover in time for Lions. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Onto the Lions, who I believe have 2 Ws in Lambeau the past 3 years after going like 25 years without a W.

Time to get another streak going.... they only have 1 loss. They are thinking 1st place with a Win. And they had a bye this week for an extra week to prepare. Boo NFL that's not right.

How many times now has AR underthrown MVS? Not even sure what Packers did so wrong to let them get that close but why do they keep doing that! 4-1 has nice ring to it but I don't think we are really that good yet. One thing very noticeable is that other qb's throw it up and let their players make a play. AR doesn't seem to do that. Maybe we don't have the receivers that he trusts for that.

Man was that sweet.

Positives
1. Aaron Jones is a monster
2. Tra Carson looks capable
3. This defense gets turnovers. Which is huge going forward.
4. The smith brothers shine again
5. Rodgers made use of everyone in the offense. Perfect execution from a rod.

Negatives
1. The special teams coverage is awful. I thought we fired zook?
2. These refs had one of the worst games I’ve seen. And that’s saying something.

4-1 feels so good! Go pack go!

Win is a win. Tale of two halves. Two or three really stupid bad plays in the second half made the game much closer than it should have been. NBA style officiating.

When they showed Aikman at the very beginning of the broadcast, red eyed and red faced, he either has allergies or is on some sort of drugs. I thought Buck-Aikman dropped their already low standard, even lower. I couldn't listen, but there were so many stoppages and outright weird calls that I had to listen some. It almost clocked in at 4 hours.

Ugh, damn injuries. Really piling up now.

I will say it again. NBA style officiating. Surprised it wasn't a technical foul call against Garret. PI seems random, but I do like how Buck-Aikman and Garret were all whining on the legitimate PI call. Defender ran into the player before the ball got there. End of story.

3 looks at Jerry Jones mouthing F*** or BULLSH** is PRICELESS...

A friend of mine insists the NFL is rigged because of the betting and money involved...After THIS game and some of these calls I'm losing ground in the argument the NFL is pure...

Please, Mr. Savage, get HEALTHY quickly. We saw first hand how important he is to this secondary.

Aaron Jones running at the goal line and between the tackles makes me wonder what the hell happened even more against Philly...

Rodgers HAS to stop that snapping the ball at ZERO seconds. They could have got him for more than one delay of game.

Irony is that he snapped it earlier than he ever does late in the game when he should have been winding it down to 1 second. How many times this season, not in a hurry up offense, have you seen Rodgers snap the ball with over 10 seconds left?

Jackson isn't a good tackler or a big hitter and has just average speed for a safety. That isn't good if you want to be a safety. Unless he dramatically improves, I don't see a spot for him beyond the #5 corner. Hope I'm wrong, I often am.

If I recall, Nagler posted there's a pretty even mix between yea-sayers and nay-sayers here, per their focus group research. Great win. Rodgers and LaFleur turned Jones into McCaffrey. Perfect strategy especially when Allison and MVS are our receiving corps. I've been railing against these two since preseason. Allison and MVS had 3 catches combined for 46 yards. Pathetic. Cobb had 3 for 53, Gallup 7 for 113 and Cooper had a thousand yards. But let's keep playing those two worthless guys. As great as 4-1 is, I'm sure Rodgers isn't happy never seeing open receivers. Something has to be done.

Thing is, Trevor Davis had 4 catches for 42 yards for the Raiders -- so maybe it's not our receivers as much as it other things.
Still wondering: Are the receivers not open or is Aaron not throwing to them?
Also, is our offense scheming the receivers open?
I'm not ready to give up on our receiving corps -- especially MVS and Shepherd.
Unless we get the next Cole Beasley or Cooper Kupp, I'll stick with the guys we have.

That's great but what about the other 70 or so plays in the game? MVS and Allison are #3 or #4 receivers at best. MVS is the better of the two and can play wide, but so far in five games Allison has been pretty much nothing. He's too slow to play outside and hasn't got the quickness for the slot. Kumerow or Shepherd should be starting in his place and will be soon. Still wish Gute had gone Hollywood Brown instead of Gary. This team would be so much stronger right now.

So have you looked at the other 70 plays, and confirmed without a doubt that he wasn't open on those? Can you also confirm that his routes are not affecting the defense, and forcing adjustments that makes other people open? As for GMo, I distinctly remember him being very effective last year before he was injured - he was open, he made big 3rd down catches, and he was able to *gasp* beat the whole defense downfield twice on long TD catches. Your absolute statements do not measure up against past performance. If we seen continued lack of production, I would be more concerned, but I'm willing to give it time.

Whew! Random thoughts. MLF inverting his usual offense flow fooled the Cowboys completely 1st half. Jimmy Graham blocks, Jimmy Graham BLOCKS!! (gotta watch the all-22 to make sure) Mike Pettine is one gutsy son of a gun. Run blitzes, attacking into the gap, playing one high with a combo matchup zone daring the Cowboys to throw into the voided areas. Insanely playing zero cover and manning up all over the field down with one your best out, and the other playing on guts alone. Alexander must be smarter and more game aware. Bears still suck. (Raiders. The Raiders....) BEARS STILL SUCK. Ha ha ha ha ha ha...... Life is good. Go Pack Go.

The win is great but the defense is not as good as we had hoped. Sorry they just aren't. We can not count on being plus 3 or plus 4 turnovers every game. They are getting gashed repeatedly and that will cost us games if it continues.

All Jones needs is a little daylight to break off some major gains. Loved some of the holes made by Jenkins--this is just what we need!

Great efforts by Redmond, the Smiths, Scott, Sullivan and the rest of our secondary for snagging those INTs. Major mistake by Pettine, though, for allowing that quick strike opportunity to Cooper that went for a touchdown.

Elliott only 12 carries? Cowboys coaching staff, what were you thinking?

Nice job, refs, for that "roughing" call on the Gary love tap to Prescott's helmet. Almost makes the NFL not worth watching. If pass interference is now reviewable, they might as well make some of these phantom roughing calls reviewable as well.

A more deserving "nice job" to the Raiders for pulling off the upset in London. Gruden must be smarter than everyone thinks he is; great game plan and no sacks for the Bears.

ZSmith is entertaining.

ZAlexander had a few nice plays but was schooled by Cooper.

Bulaga had yet another nice game.

Kudo's to Crosby to shake off a hard hit and kick well both on KO's & FG's.

Tonight was the A Jones coming out party. Believe it or not the direct snap that he made a nice run on wasn't planned.

Bears lost. They nearly got another win on a PF on the QB but lost anyway. Ha Ha.

Team was sloppy in the fourth - but I'll take the win.

You need to hold a Watch Party for every single road game! That was so much fun to listen to you guys the whole game. I turned down Buck and Aikman, though unfortunately I left them on loud enough to hear Aikman's stupidity. I get very nervous during Packers games, so the calmness of you two helped get me through the fourth quarter. Excellent win, and now it's time to think BIG for this season!

The thing is that they are a work in progress. Came to Dallas and set the tone right away. They worked on the run fits and challenged receivers and made the best of it. The thing is to have a detailed game plan to stop 21 and force Prescott to win it is a pettine masterpiece. This is a big road win and they should be happy with the players fighting and getting to 4-1. One big negative is the play calling from the 1 yard line. The packers are a physical team now sometimes you have to bully your way in.

What’s with 1st and goal at the 1 and imploding? What with ARod no in the clock down between plays? Lastly aRod throwing in rhythm is as goos as it gets however ARod holding the ball is death.

Lost in all of this is how well Rodgers is playing as they figure things out.

He played well. But he needs to start hitting MVS in stride to take it to the next level.

Huge win! Last week I said it was time to hit the panic button if Zeke ran all over us...but he did not! Kudos to the coaching staff for having the team prepared and then executing it. Zeke only had 12 carries for 62 yds and a TD. I was expecting a lot more than that. I'll have to read up on how Montravius Adams and Oren Burks played, because I hope they were the difference.

Other thoughts:
1. Kevin King - like Nagler said, really happy for him. He gutted this one out. Glad he made the catch on the INT since he dropped one earlier in the game (and also dropped one vs. Chicago). Hope he's ok. He's proving that when healthy, he's a legit NFL CB.

2. Rodgers' body language towards LaFleur -- I don't like it. This is NOT a one game sample size either -- this happens on a weekly basis -- it is a trend of behavior that is plain as day. Each time the camera pans over to the sideline, Rodgers is waving his arm around with a look of disgust on his face while LaFleur calmly listens and then follows him. As much as we all love Rodgers, I wish he was a little more respectful of uh, his head coach. It's as if all his pent up anger he had with McCarthy is now being taken out on his new head coach when before, he was merely passive aggressive.

3. MVS and Allison -- thumbs down. MVS had one catch for 18 yds and Allison 2 catches for 28 yds. Are you serious? Without Adams playing, there were 10-15 targets to go around easily, and still, neither one can show up on a weekly basis to be counted on.

4. Aaron Jones -- has arrived. Feed him the damn ball! I can only wonder: if Jamaal Williams was healthy, would he have vultured some of the TDs today? Maybe....but at least LaFleur got a glimpse of how great Jones can truly be. This guy's special.

5. The Smiths -- damn, I love these guys. They just wreak havoc each week!! Plus, they've given us something this defense has sorely lacked for a long time -- leadership. Clay Matthews was a quieter, lead by example type of guy, and while Mike Daniels barked a lot, I read that he also rubbed a lot of guys the wrong way. The players seem to look up to both Smiths, and that's what we need.

6. Injuries -- ugh. Linsely, King, Savage, ZaDarius Smith seemed like he tweaked his knee 2-3 times, so I hope he's ok.

Next week....Detroit will be a tough, tough game. Coming fresh off a bye week, it'll be a slugfest. Feels great to be 4-1!!! GO PACK GO!!

Games like this one, where a loss to a hated opponent will bring added sting, I go in mentally prepared for the Packers to lose so the fall won't be so steep. It was a mostly ugly second half to watch; sloppy and poorly officiated, but a Packers win, and that is all that counts.

Thanks to Jerry Jones for keeping Jason Garrett, a man who looked like he was late for his shift at Jiffy Lube, at the helm. Even 57 year-old Jason Witten pushing off to get open one...more... time... couldn't save :::cough:: America's :::cough::: Team.

Many pawsatives today. Time to get some things corrected, focus on our pad level, and prepare to meet the football club from Dee-troit.

In one series Lewis, Tonyan , and Graham each had a catch. It's nice to see the offense actually use the TE position for more than just lost cap space (Graham). Dallas would have done well to stick with running Elliot but had to rely on Prescott when they feel behind. Auume you can take away the 250 yds to Cooper if Packer's actually covered him and Green Bay still gives up almost 400 yds. Turn overs are exciting, but you just aren't going to get 3 every week - that is a house of cards defense. 77 filling in well on online was good to see.

Some questions for those who aren't entertaining a houseful and watched the details more closely.

Is this the defense we have now? They give up tons of yards but can pressure and make a big play.

Are the packers figuring the running game out or is Dallas that porous in the middle?

Why did Elgton Jenkins not start the season? It seemed a noticeable difference In the interior or again that Dallas porosity again.

Slowly but surely, the Packers' offense is showing signs of improvement in play calling. Rodgers is finding ways of working in LaFleur's system and some of his sidearm and escape valve throws paid off against Dallas. The ability to gain significant yardage on first down runs helped as well and Aaron Jones was spectacular and delivered one of his best games ever. The Pack also used the TE position to full advantage against Dallas as Graham/Tonyan/Lewis all had significant catches including a spectacular grab by Tonyan that Mr Nagler so adeptly pointed out. And I also agree with our intrepid Cheesehead TV founder/analysts's observation that Sullivan played a brilliant game - he could well emerge as a potential starter.

Some areas of concern: Rodgers and MVS have yet to develop a good rhythm and the Packers cannot or will not execute quick slants that that they once mastered especially during the Favre era - it seems to be a lost art under Rodgers/LaFleur; Jaire Alexander was badly outclassed by Amari Cooper and needs to learn from this experience; the Packers' defense looked very vulnerable in the second half as the Cowboys stepped up their passing attack in the second half.

But the bottom line is that this Packers' team is showing great chemistry and Za'Darius Smith has provided an infectious brand of enthusiasm and self-belief for the team. Gutekunst deserves tremendous credit for bringing both Smiths on board this year in addition to picking up Amos Oz. Now all we need is a dominant ILB - are there any out there prior to the trade deadline? That would fill one obvious weakness in the defense. Go Pack Go. Who would have predicted 4 - 1 given a new coach, new offense, and the need to integrate so many new players on defense? This team has great spirit and Packers fans worldwide should feel encouraged.

Great win. I would have taken any kind of win to be honest; especially with Adams out and our run defence notoriously weak of late, coming up against one of the best backs.

We ran this game for 75% of it. The O had rhythm, the running game was stellar and Jones is a superstar. Love his swagger.
I'd like us to get the TE's more involved.
We hit a lull again in the second half but that's OK. Still kinks to iron out. You can't complain at 30+ points on the road in my opinion. Still some really frustrating things happening (penalties, busted plays, lack of communication etc) but the good news is we're 4-1 after a really tough fixture list and the best is yet to come.

Jaire was brilliant first half, second half he showed he has still a way to go but, of course he does. He'll be the outstanding CB in the NFL within 2 years. King had a good game. The Smiths were back at it. Nice to see some guys coming back or making cameos without looking out of place.

I'm not going to lie, letting them come back to the degree we did was disappointing but they were always going to have a go at some point, and the though the wheels came off to a degree, the damage was already done. Sustaining the pressure and quality throughout 4 Qs is something that will hopefully be perfected by the time the playoffs come around.

Overall, absolutely delighted. I'm usually optimistic and I had this down as one to probably write off.

This years Packer team is the most fun to watch that I've seen in years! They've got all the things I love: a running game that's exciting, a defense that's dominating, and Aaron is Aaron again. Not to mention a punter that kicks the sh!t out of the ball and a coverage team that doesn't get flagged on every single kickoff. On the bad side they do remind me of past teams with players dropping like flies. If we can stem the injuries nothing can stop this team.

As a Packer fan in TX, it's ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS a great day when we beat the Cowboys!

The team is starting to find itself on Offense... seeing Rodgers dump off to Running backs and little things like the screen to Marcedes Lewis is a thing of beauty!

I have to think that Jaire's bad day has to be an aberration.

The Smiths are such a delight to watch. Such a 180 from the play we had at OLB in previous years.

GO PACK GO!
