Gut Reactions: Packers don't show up against Chargers

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers loss to the Chargers.

  • Packers offense didn't get off the bus.
  • Way, way, way too many penalties.
  • Hard to live in 2nd and 3rd and long all game
  • The offensive line. Woof.
  • Hated punting on the plus side of the 50. Hated it.
  • Way too many 3rd and longs.
  • Rough game for Tony Brown.
  • The offense was way to lethargic for much of the game. Where was the tempo LaFleur has preached?
  • My Twitter feed was a cesspool of negativity, which I get. But man some people need to get a grip.
  • The Packers defense had no answer for Henry all game long.
  • Pettine's crew ran out of gas down the stretch but they did a nice job keeping the Packers in the game early on
  • LaFleur didn't seem to have an answer once it was clear his line couldn't hold up.
  • Good to see this team face a little adversity. Going to be interesting to see how they respond.
  • Burn the tape of this one. Packers didn't show up.
  • Still love this team
  • Go Pack.

Wow!! … The Pack stunk in all phases of the game.. In fact, the stench is pretty much over whelming. --- Time to exit CHTV for a few weeks & let the naysayers & doom and glooming trolls take over …. You know they will.

Samson, please get over yourself. Take it like a man. Make your posts. Good or bad and be happy about them. Kicking people off so we all can think alike means somebody here ain't thinking. Just because I think the Packers would be a better team in my eyes and Lord knows I get more thumbs down than anybody doesn't mean I'm wrong, but it at least makes me take a double look at my comments to see if I truly believe I am right or wrong, but that doesn't make me troll or anyone else that has a different opinion, so just get back on CHTV and make your post!! Heck, I will even let you give me a thumbs down. Go Pack Go!!

I do think the one thing this game tells me is Bulaga is not getting another contract. Not sure if it was his injury as he was solid earlier in the year, but my goodness. He was utterly annihilated by Bosa. Just abused. I have never seen him beat so consistently and thoroughly. Bad technique, bad feet, bad everything. Bulaga has Bosa tire marks on his face. O-line was on roller skates all game. Bahktiari's play has not been elite this year either.

This was all about a broken finger for Bulaga. You could see he was attempted to avoid any punching until the last possible second.

You can't play RT and not use your hands. He should have been pulled after the first Q in my opinion.

That said... Bulaga has been playing lights out in 2019 putting on a clinic in how to play RT at the pro level. I don't know if he'll be extended, but through 9 games, he's played stellar football in 2019.

just not ready to play today. Teamlooked like they are overdue for their bye week.
offense beat themselves especially in the first half. Defense poor tackling again.
Special teams added a blocked punt for good measure.

Rest of division also lost fortunately and this is a loss to an AFC team which is better than losing to the NFC.

Burn the tape, start over next week. Thanks, Since '61

This game was unwatchable almost from the get-go. You have to give a lot of credit to the Chargers for having a good game plan and executing on it, but boy oh boy did we not show up to play on offense.

There aren't really any bright spots from this week except that the Vikings dropped a close game to the Chiefs. 7-2 is still a great place to be. Carolina next week. Go Pack Go.

How about a Good, Bad, and the Ugly:
GOOD: Everybody else in the NFC North lost.
BAD: Jaire Alexander - It's time Alexander earn the credit he has been given. When is the last time he had a good game? He has been abused multiple weeks in a row now. Kevin King is currently our best CB.
UGLY: Packer penalties, especially pre-snap.

Tramon might be the best CB. That was pretty good coverage by Jaire on the 60 yard crosser. That's a tight window. Gambled but it took a perfect pass. Probably a 4 inch window.

King [edit: I mean Tony Brown] finally got a chance to play, his first since week one. Might take another six weeks before he gets another chance.

The Blame Game (a lot to go around)

#1 - poor gameplans by coaches
#2 - the offensive line, so soft, so unprepared
#3 - the WRs & Gutekunst. He used 3 picks on WRs in 2018, & none are good. MVS can run fast in a straight line. That's better than EQ & Jamon Moore. I've had people tell me for awhile that our whole WR crew besides Adams are "not NFL-caliber". I tried to argue but they're bad. For all Teddy did bad, he drafted good WRs.

It's been a long, long time since I turned off a Packer Game.

The Offensive Line should not recieve game checks for that. Whatever that was. How can at least 4 different lineman not know what the snap count is?

Jaire Alexander is no longer a probable elite player to me. He was awful. He looked like TBuck out there taking risks and leaving guys wide open.

I'd be curious to see the conversion rate when AR throws deep on 3rd and medium. I bet it's horrible. He insists on doing that, but it almost never works.

Hopefully the Packers learn there lesson. It doesn't matter what you did in the weeks before the game. The other team is going to kick your ass if you bring weak shit to the field.

This obviously isn’t why they lost the game, but it bothered me to see the photos at Packers.com of many of the guys mugging/posing for the camera as they walked the tarmac at Austin Straubel to the plane to LA. Good natured fun, sure, and they were heading to California which probably made a lot of them happy. But it looked like they were heading to Camp Disney or something. And the night before they left, a lot of them went to Terror on the Fox together for Halloween. Again, I don’t begrudge them enjoying their down time. It just appeared they were feeling their oats a little too much, maybe.

Rodgers was not in top form today by any means but he's not to blame for the outcome when the WRs aren't getting separation and drop passes that should be catches (looking at you, Kumerow), the game plan doesn't utilize enough running against a run-soft defense, and the offensive line can't hold Ingram and Bosa.

It was a team loss today.

Re: Hating Rodgers::
I think Rodgers is a very, very talented QB who lets his ego get in his own way too often.

I also think Rodgers could use a dose of reality when he doesn't play up to snuff, as opposed to the entire universe blaming everything and everybody under the sun in an attempt to avoid laying any blame on his shoulders.

SteelyPhil,

This idea that the Packers WRs don't get enough separation has been perpetuated for years to protect Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers used to throw to WRs with little separation with great result. Today, look at many of the throws Philip Rivers completed to WRs- they have no more separation than the Packers WRs are getting.

In the NFL, if you have a step or two on the defender.. you should be considered open enough to throw to. Rodgers simply doesn't pull the trigger when most NFL QB's would.

November 03, 2019 at 07:18 pm

For me, it's more about not getting the ball out quickly. There was a number of times today where yes, he's under duress, but there was a shallow option coming across the field that he either didn't see or bypassed that would have got the ball out of his hand quickly and at least moved the ball forward.

He has been playing very well the last many weeks; my fear was that when Adams came back he'd revert back to tunnel vision as opposed to continuing to hand off the ball and spread the targets around.

I don't know from the first viewing if thats what happened- looking for Adams at the expense of taking what was available in progression, or choosing to pass out of Run-Pass options more than he should of- but I do know this wasn't the kind of ball the Packers have been playing the last many weeks, and I do know the RBs looked good when handed the rock today, but were under utilized.

There was a lot of presssure, but also the ball was being held too long and there were a number of bad passes behind WRs as well. I also was not fond of the 3 or so deep shots on 3rd downs instead of looking to simply move the chains on a day when the passing offense was not clicking.

Yeah, out of rhythm and forcing deep 30+ yard throws. As Nagler had on his twitter feed, Chargers were playing a classic cover 3 with quarters and rush 4. The counter is a straight run inbetween the tackles. Very little of that, even when they down only by 9. And Rodgers could have taken the soft 10+. I don't know if the hit to Ge Mo effected him to the point where he was refusing to take the short throw in the middle, but he stunk today, and he knew it.

All the press clippings.
Forget that.

The defense is still soft.
Everyone rips Blake Martinez. But we have no other ILBs period.

Russell Wilson is the MVP, not Rodgers.

Guty so far: good FA getter. Average drafter.

3 WRs in 2018, all worthless.
2nd rd pick on Josh Jackson, can't play.
3rd rd reach on a 220 lb ILB Oren Burks. Hasn't made a play in 2 seasons.

Elgton Jenkins & Darnell Savage & Jaire are good picks, although Alexander is not nearly as good as he thinks he is.
The highest pick yet, Rashan Gary, no impact unlike plenty of other rookies out there.
The Defense needs a lot of work.

The 49ers D is way better than the Chargers & their Bosa is better than the Chargers Bosa.

Lotta work to be done.

Wasn’t able to watch the game, and it sounds like a darn good thing. What a bummer to hear about the offense laying an egg like this. Anyone got an explanation, aside from the O-line not showing up?

It’s interesting to me that through the first four weeks, the offense sputtered while Davante was playing. He gets injured, and the offense comes alive for four games he’s out. He comes back, and this happens. Is it possible Rodgers relies too heavily on him and he’s good but not good enough to be that guy who carries a team? Just spitballing, here.

DL was whipped. Still, only gave up 9 pts in the 1st half.
OL was whipped, run blocking and pass pro.
10 rushes. That isn't enough regardless of results.
If there was an offensive gameplan, I've no idea what it was.

GB is short a player on D.

The Packers got the crap beat out of them by an inferior team...how they respond will tell us more about the team did this last game.

Bad game the Packers were out of sorts from the start. It happens during every NFL season. That is why there has been only one unbeaten season by those venerable 72 Dolphins. No big deal, still in first and I’m great position for the playoffs.
Go get the Panthers at home next week and take it out on them! Go Pack!

For the few of you who always love to rip Martinez, tell me a better ILB the Packers have had the past 4 seasons. The fact is, he's all they got. Without him, it would be 200-yard rushers every game.

He’s awful but they have no one and he gets tackles that are beyond 5 yards of line of scrimmage every time. But your right they have no one he’s the aj hawk of the new packers good stats but doesn’t do anything to affect game. Replay the game and I counted at least five times he’s out of position on a play. He’s all we have but I do not want to see him in Green Bay next year time to finally fix the middle of the field!

The holes LAC ripped in the front three made it awfully hard for anyone further downfield to do anything other than get run over for a few more yards. But when men (LAC) come and play boys (GB) on both sides of the LOS this is what happens. That said the GB defensive front has been gashed almost all season. At this point it is pretty obvious the talent is too thin up front.

You all did a fine job describing what went wrong. Bravo.
To me if that wasn't the Mccarthy offensive play scheme being called I would not beleive it.
Last week they rolled out, went to short passes out of the backfield, qb ran the ball all to allev8ate pass rush. This week, drop back look for Adam's, repeat.

The 7-1 record was very deceiving. We were fools-gold. Think hardly about it.

Week 1, offense was putrid, Mitch Trubiski bails us out floating one to Adrian Amos in the end zone. Lucky ugly W.

Week 2, we blew the early lead versus Minnesota, Vikings were steamrolling us and in the 4th quarter were running right thru us play after play, Dalvin Cook and Mattison. Then they went play-action on 1st down and Cuzins forced the pass in the end zone for the Int. Gift. Saved our arses.

Week 6, Lions, totally bailed out by the penalties for the hands to the face against their DE against Bulaga. Saved our arses there too.

Those are 3 games that were very very lucky to be W's and not L's.
And don't forget that this defense has been torched on the ground and by WRs.
Philly beat us up.
Oakland ran thru us.
Dak Prescott threw for 400 yards, but he made 3 mistakes that were picked off. But we didn't really "stop" then other than that. We are too dependent on getting turnovers, like the 2011 defense, and the 2009 defense.

There is MUCH work to be done. And I don't think we have the firepower to match the 49ers defense, and I think the Saints in New Orleans would annihilate us, as they have to us before when we had better teams.
We're lucky the Vikings lost too today, but they'll beat us in Minnesota badly if we don't improve big time.

Oh, and our offense is as healthy as any team in the NFL with our whole 1-5 OL still playing, our QB, top 2 RBs, all our top WRs, and top 2 TEs.
Our best 10+ players on defense are all still healthy too. No excuses.

The Packers' weaknesses were all exposed today. They were outclassed and outplayed in every facet of the game. And while the Chargers played a solid game, they really didn't show anything much beyond the play that got them to 3-5. A cold dose of NFL reality.

I bailed on this game early in the fourth quarter--it looked like the end of last season.

Offensive line: Abysmal! Pre-snap penalties right out of the gate. Poor pass protection and run blocking.

Receivers: Even more abysmal. Zero out of Butterfingers Kumerow, and nothing of significance from the rest of them.

Offensive coaching: Like the author said, up-tempo was needed to shake off the lethargy. And too much running on first down.

Defensive coaching: Yes, the defense limited the Chargers to field goals early on, but they allowed them to move easily down the field ALL GAME LONG. That means they control time of possession and limit the number of offensive opportunities we have (duh). This "bend but don't break" is getting old. It's pretty clear that those early season defensive performances were a mirage--too much reliance on turnovers.

Interior defense: Not much. Never mind getting a push--how about just holding your own? No, that's wrong; we definitely need some push up front to flush the QB or RB out. Will either need free agent or high draft pick help here (and pick someone that's ready to play, not a developmental project!)

Special teams: KRs usually can't make it to the 25. Nice blocked punt allowed. How many decades is it going to take before this is a respectable unit?

"Good to see this team face a little adversity. Going to be interesting to see how they respond." They should have responded at the start of the second half.

The most disappointing thing about this game is that the Packers didn't appear to take this opponent seriously enough. Here was an opportunity to open up a nice lead against the rest of the division....

Those pre-snap penalties were hard to take given the fact this was essentially a 9th home game due to all the Packers fans in attendance.

Green bay defense is 12th in the league in scoring defense.

Not elite, but top 1/3 of the league.

By definition, that means an average offense should win you more games than not.

But hey, I'm just an idiot.

Only one reaction is when is the packer organization gonna get an inside linebacker and someone that can cover middle of the field. Rodgers didn’t try to run ball today but defense can’t and hasn’t ever been able to stop run in middle of the field for years!

That was the point of the trade discussions last week. Gutedkunst needed to try to move onLeonard Williams or deal for an ILB. LAncaster, Montravious and Lowry just don't bring it and Kenny Clark is getting doubled into oblivion. Watching the Middle of the defense being exploited for 9 weeks going on nine years is ridiculous.

This is still a rebuilding team, thin across the board. Injuries were going to catch up at some point, and not to put a fine point on it. This is the NFL, that talent level is pretty equal across the board. As usual, it all comes down to what collection of talent, when you play, and how mentally ready your team is that day. Bottom line today: Coaches fail. Players Failed. Team loss across the board. And in case you forgot, this Chargers team was one game from the Superbowl last year. This year they are having same kind of issues that Green Bay dealt with over the past two years. But their core is intact. MLF went too sleep, and the Packers got their backside handed to them. It happens. It is the NFL.

Total team effort, they all stunk. We were due for a game like this, a good team needing a win more than an over confident team (IMO) the Packers. There's more to playing than just showing up, the Chargers weren't afraid of our 7-1 record. Well, shit happens get ready for the Panthers. o-line was ugly.

Looks like the Packers were out schemed on offense. Danger of playing out of conference foe. Not enough on video. Still, strange they didn't make O line adjustments in the second half, more likely, they did and still stunk up the field. (Sigh) Burn the tape...

Very lethargic performance in all 3 phases. No adjustments by MLF. AR taking deep shots not smart QB play Should be getting out of the pocket and extending the play. STs are a joke way too many penalties especially on OL. Inexcusable at week 9. We have serious concerns. Maybe a bit too much hype. Hope we never see another packers game of this caliber. We had the opportunity to take control of the North and work towards a bye but laid an egg. Hope we bounce back next week.

Is it possible Davante interrupted whatever flow Rodgers was getting into within the new offensive scheme?

Despite the team not wanting to play today, they still need to be held accountable. The defense definitely kept us in the game, so they deserve some credit. What the hell happened to the offensive line though? And we get Adams back and put up a dud like that? They better get back at it and fast.

Best thing about this game is that it checked all the boxes for the right time and game to lose. Lost to an AFC team and every north team lost.

- OL Sucked
- Defense gave up too many big plays and runs
- Special teams looked like the 2018 version
- Crap performance all around
- Really surprised to see Alexander not catch what looked like a TE
- Packers didn't seem that interested

2011, Cobbs first ever game.
Was that the answer? that's pathetic if so...
And we've had like 3 Special teams coaches...
I wish we'd hire one PROVEN good one. Teach these guys how to block.
One thing I notice, and I confirmed this in person, is on kick returns, our guys run back too far & wait too long to begin their blocking ATTEMPTS.
Always.
And the punt return blockers on the edges against the gunners do a horrrrrrrrrrrrrrible job. Those gunners usually get down there as soon as the ball does.

Jaire Alexander has been getting beat all over the field the last few weeks. I love his confidence, but he might've been a little soon with it.

Bosa and Engram are studs. Two of the best. But man oh man were they making fools of Bahktiari and Bulaga. I love our tackles, they're great. But today was ugly x2.

Did not love Jamaal Williams dancing in the end zone when it's 26-9 with 6 minutes to go. Have fun, sure. But please, at least be more mad you're getting embarrassed than me, a guy watching on a TV, 4 time zones away.

Play calling seemed McCarthy-esque. Constant, sure-to-fail dump offs and underneath stuff on 2nd/3rd and long. But I guess if you have no run game and your QB has no time, what plays do you have?

None of the d-line were getting home today. And where was Kenny Clark?

Frustrating to see the team deliver this kind of lazy effort. Thought we were past this. Oh well. Hope they learn from it.

Keep in mind:

Week 1 win over Bears had some luck in the Trubisky int to Amos in the end zone.

Week 2 win over Vikings had a lot of luck in the play where on 1st down in the 4th quarter after they'd had both Cook & Mattison just gashing us play after play, their genius playcaller got cute & had Cuzins throw one into the end zone, which King intercepted, saving the day.

Week 6 win over Detroit, we all know the flags on the Lions guy against Bakhtiari were extreeeeeeemely fortunate & they saved our asses.

Also the Dallas game, Prescott threw for 400 on our D, but the mistakes he made were picked off.

What I'm trying to say is our record was a bit deceiving.
Vegas knew. That's why they only had us favored by 3.5 yesterday vs a 3-5 team, knowing we'd have as many fans as they did.

We are very healthy compared to most teams, by the way. Some teams are starting Marshall Newhouse due to injury. Some are missing their top 4 ILBs.
Some teams have had to play their #2 & #3 QBs.
2 QB backups last name Allen won games yesterday.
