Gut Reactions: Packers 34 Falcons 20

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers win over the Falcons.

  • 1-0 in the Philbin era baby!
  • Impressive how Philbin set an NFL record (fastest use of both challenges) on his first drive as head coach of the Packers.
  • Loved the quick passing game to open.
  • Didn't love opening with Jamaal Williams.
  • I get they paid Jimmy Graham all this money, but he's clearly not the best option at the moment.
  • Jaire Alexander had a good game. He took some lumps against Julio Jones, but that's to be expected.
  • Good to see Cobb get involved again.
  • Kenny Clark is the truth.
  • Justin McCary battled today. He's not a great player, but he works his ass off.
  • I thought Patrick and Light acquitted themselves well overall today.
  • Fantastic break on the ball from Breeland.
  • The Packers are still alive for a playoff berth. I love that this fact will piss off all the right people.
  • Nice to see Rodgers smiling a bit and cutting up with the guys. Feels like it's been forever.
  • Clay Matthews can still play, just not in the way he used to. I hope he's still playing in Green Bay next year.
  • Still an unfortunate amount of "Just punt on 3rd down" drives in this game.
  • That said, nice to see a win in the cold in Lambeau. The way things were meant to be.
  • Go Pack.

As much as I want us to have higher draft choices, I always want us to win once the game starts and I see the Green and Gold out on the field. Wins feel good. Our team had fight in them today and the crowd was great. Go, Pack!

Jimmy Graham is ranked 5th, 6th, or 7th among TEs in most objective measures like catches, yards, and average.

Williams and Jones are a good combo. I could care less who starts. Use them both and keep them healthy....we'll need them next year.

I guess that Philbin must have made our horses better. Either that, or his new scheme or playbook.(yeah, that's sarcasm).

Looked to me more of a case that the Falcons have corrected even less. A win is nice but the manner of it seemed to me to differ only in the addition of a defensive score and of a much poorer opponent D.

Clearly Kenny is one of Teds hits in his last few drafts. His ability to come back from injury is amazing. When he gets injured it truly means "return questionable" unlike nearly every one else.

Please don't wear this guy down though. Save him for the renaissance starting next year.

I’m 2,000 miles from home in Wisconsin, but my hosts were able to figure out how to live stream the game for me. So happy for a Packers win, though I admit it was strange not having MM on the sidelines. Murphy and Gutekunst looked somber in their box. They have to know there’s a lot riding on their future decisions re the head coach and personnel. If Murphy hires a head-hunting firm I hope the board will veto him. I keep thinking of how Harley Davidson, in planning its 100th anniversary celebration, farmed out the decision on the headlining performer to a search firm—their brilliant selection was Elton John, which backfired. Five years later, they made the choice they should have in the first place; Bruce Springsteen.

Breeland at age 26 could be a fixture in the Packers defensive backfield for years, and perhaps a star -- same with the rookie, Alexander.

These are the tough calls for management.
After letting go of Heyward and Hyde and seeing them excel elsewhere (plus maybe Tramon Williams), we need some good decisions to be made for our defensive backfield.
More reason why these last three games are so important.
In general, we can try different guys on defense and offense down the stretch, while at the same time going for wins -- and maybe even the playoffs.
For example, let's see more of Tonyan at tight end, while not giving up on Graham. We can give more rest to Kenny Clarke, while still playing him most of the snaps. We can use young guys who may make some mistakes, but also may make some plays.
It's so important to realize that taking chances as a team in making some changes doesn't mean giving up on the season, or any particular game!

Absolutely, if Breeland is healthy he is the number 3 behind Alexander and King and if one gets hurt he moves to number two. Josh Jackson is going to be good but needs more seasoning. Imho if Jackson could put on 5-10lbs of muscle he would make an ideal FS, free to face and read the QB then make plays with his instincts and athleticism.

That Atlanta team is a heartless joke. The offense was able to get a balanced attack going. I think the offense has to be able to screen and play action to get Rodgers his vertical shots. Those running backs are a good 1-2 punch. Give those guys a big nasty physical line to run behind watch out. Rodgers could do major damage in play action. Philbin shouldn’t be the next coach, complete offensive over haul is needed. Lots of talent in key spots so next coach will be fine next year.

It feels good it was not a loss, but very little in the way of anything concrete suggesting real improvement for the future. What is there to say?

We are in a holding pattern until off season surgery. Nothing to suggest the prognosis has changed. As has been said, other than the result, the game performance took an eerily similar shape to that of preceding games, other than the pick 6 and Crosby and the special teams unit.

Philbin continues to play Graham with a bad hand, to limit Jones’ carries and we got away from an uptempo O after the first quarter.

" As has been said, other than the result, the game performance took an eerily similar shape to that of preceding games, other than the pick 6 and Crosby and the special teams unit."

I don't agree with that at all. The Packers methodically took apart the Falcons like many have expected them to do many times before this year. it was a 34-20 final but the game was not that close.

Highest point total of the year in less than ideal conditions and sans 60% of their OL starters.

Also, they were above 50% on 3rd down. I'm too lazy to look it up but I dare say that is a rare thing for them this year. Certainly of late, they have been failing badly on 3rd down.

So if Breeland doesn't get the pick six, and Alexander doesn't recover both fumbled punts, and Crosby misses a kick....what's the score then?

Do we have any Officials on the Board? Anyone want to speak to Lare's take here and subsequent support from the Board?

Here's what I know. The NFL grades Officials on every play. Every damn play. Those who are determined to be successful in their interpretation of the rules are rewarded with playoff assignments. They have replays to assist in getting calls made correctly. For whatever reasons, all of these systems result in the kinds of weekly snafus we saw today.

Some say employing full-time officials is the answer. In this age of electronic surveillance, why even have Officials on the field? Couldn't the eye in the sky make the right call every time without human error? The same is true for spotting the ball, and measuring for first downs. Both could be accomplished with them new-fangled lasers, but the NFL loves the drama and game show moments created by measuring for a first down.

I can't get on the "hold them accountable" train on this one, Lare. Sometimes when you're dealing with humans human error occurs.

Getting an accurate spot....every single time....can be accomplished with the Hawkeye technology we use in tennis. With video, we can get an accurate picture beyond our own eyes from multiple angles.

It is very easy to automate line calls in tennis - it is simple contact with the ball in relation to the line. Football far more complex - you would need hyper accurate GPS, and sensors in the ball and players, so that any contact point could be measured.

Here's a topic nobody cares about, but I noticed the field held up very well. They went from the GrassMaster polypropylene fibers which sucked to polyethylene-based SIS Grass.

The field had looked great even in a cold December contest and after a full game of play. I saw very few slipping throughout the game and A Jones was able to make some sharp cuts.

The Pack may have a number of questions for the future, but they've found their turf.

Good first game for Philbin. That being said, it was nice to see Rodgers animated again on the sideline. There has to be some deep secret in the locker room that keeps Aaron Jones from getting twenty touches a game. Clay can still play, but as Ive been saying, it needs to be on the inside along side of Martinez. Another great game by Clark, not too shabby by Alexander covering one of the toughest guys in the league. As a fan, I always keep hoping for the playoffs...having been a fan through the post Lombardi era, I remember being eliminated in week 8 of a fourteen game season. GO PACK GO!

Wilment, I've been around that long, too.

Your observation about CM3 is accurate. Matthews is very effective inside. His durability (which improves availability!) is also better when he's playing inside.

How many touchdown killing flags did the falcons have. Goodness their O line is worst than ours. Felt like this Packers team is what we should have saw last week. Most problems are personal at this point, that showed up last week and to a lesser extant this week. What might have been. I need a (root)beer. Sigh......

Some thoughts on the win.

- It sure feels better than a loss!
- The backups on the Oline did a very respectable job in pass pro. Several of the sacks were the result of Rodgers holding the ball/no one open. Run blocking was pretty hit or miss though. Most of Jones' negative carries were the result of somebody getting rolled at the LOS.
- Holding Julio to 106 yards is a win in my book. He's a darn good player, and expecting to shut him out is unrealistic. They had to limit the damage, and did just that.
- Outside pass rush is still easily the biggest weakness on this team
- Loved the quick hitting stuff to start the game. Let's see more of it.
- We really need a seam busting TE like Kittle (who I wanted to draft). Graham just doesn't have the speed, or the hands anymore apparently.
- Let's beat da bares!

Good commentary.
Do you think Tonyan could possibly be the guy at tight end, and is worth more of a look?
Another thing about using Jamal Williams at tight end, as I mentioned above, is that he may have similar routes as a running back as he would as a tight end.

I'd like to see him get more opportunities for sure, but don't want to rely on him to be the future at the position. This will be a great draft for TE's, so hopefully Gute tries to find a long-term solution.

Cutting Graham would result in $7 million in dead money. He'll be our starter next year, and we still have Tonyan. I'd be surprised if we spent a Top 100 pick in a TE.

There isn't even a speck of a doubt in my mind Tonyan is faster, quicker, more athletic, more agile, and has better hands than any of the other TE's. Period! He should be playing and playing a lot these next three games. Graham lumbers down the field and besides his broken thumb he wasn't able to go up athletically and catch balls prior to the broken thumb.

Why do NFL coaches have such a hard time identifying talent and plugging them in. Where is the mix and matching of personnel to the benefit of the Pack? Over the years watching this same thing play out over and over with various players and it is hard to comprehend. I understand experience has value but after a full preseason and 13 NFL games Tonyan is not inexperienced anymore. You see the two rookie WR's playing extensively why not Tonyan? While I do not watch Graham a whole lot I do not think defense's are double teaming him anymore (or not much). I do not even think Graham has much value anymore in the red zone. He cannot jump athletically and catch a ball when healthy let alone with a broken thumb.

There's another TE in the upcoming draft from Iowa (like George Kittle). His name is Noah Fant.

He's 6'5" and worth a look with our late 1st rd pick or 2nd rd pick, depending on how his stock rises or falls over the next several months.

I thought Graham had 10 plus targets. The box score reads 5, 2 receptions, 13 yards. Most of the passes to Graham seem forced. Gonna be easy to justify that $12.66M cap hit next year. Dump him and admit the mistake. BTW, I wanted to see Tonyan get 20 snaps.

If I never see another designed rollout right by AR.... I wonder if his passer rating on that play is in double digits. Probably, QBs don't throw many INTs when the pass lands behind the bench area.

Lare, Sorry but 20-25 touches is about the max Jones should get in any game. I'm more than just ok with Jones touching the ball 20x a game. He really doesn't need 25 touches unless it's a must win game like a playoff game because he's not that big and he takes a pounding on many of those runs. It worked out well today as the Packers scored a season high 34 points.

Btw, there is only 1 RB averaging 20carries per game and that's Zeke Elliotte. Todd Gurley is second at 18.8, but Zeke is 225lbs, Gurley is 231lbs and Aaron Jones is 200lbs fresh out the pool soaking wet and fully clothed.

Jones is not Elliot or Gurley. The long runs are great but the majority of his runs are less than 3 yards. He had 4 runs for negative yardage yestetday.

He's a good back, but he's not a star or even a feature back. He's a good piece in an offense that revolves around a QB.that throws a lot.

He does however still posses enough straight line speed and veteran savvy to help the offense overall, just not 10million a years worth.

His cap hit this year is under $7 million. If we cut him after this season, it'll cost us about $7 million in dead money. His deal has an out after the 2019 season. He'll be our starter next year, and he'll make 12million.

He's still one of the better TEs in the league. And he's out there with a broken hand on a cold day in a game that doesn't matter much instead of taking the day off. You want guys like that.

How quickly things change in the NFL. The Packers and Falcons, only 2 years removed from the NFCCG, put on that middling display of tackle football. Still, a win felt good to me, and I'm grateful I'm not a Falcon's fan. Ugly.

Kizer's effort today should put to rest any of the crazy talk 'round these parts of Boyle being our future QB. The kid was flawless, with 0 Ints. Case closed.

Say what you want about Jason Spriggs, but he excels at helping his teammates up from the ground. You can't teach that.

Overall I thought our pad level looked a tad on the high side, especially from Light and Lancaster. Should be able to get that cleaned up next week prior to the contest against the football club in Chicago.

I’m thinking GB ought to prioritize shorter players if they really want to get serious about this pad level situation. No linemen over 5-11, says I. Huge disadvantage for Spriggs at 6-6, although he never stands taller than when he stoops to help a teammate up. So at those moments, his literal pad level is awesome while his character soars.

Today was a good result for us. Atlanta is a team with a lot of problems, but we overcame our own ghosts and sent them packing.

This was nice to see as a little payback for the 2016 NFC championship loss.

I'd like clay Matthews back for the right price. He's a future HOFer who'll be productive later in his career. Maybe not as much as Woodson and Peppers, but he will be.

Who knows? If we win out and the head coaching candidates don't materialize as we think, Philbin just may be our future HC. The more i read online, the less likely I think any of these big names comes to Green Bay.

Packers win out to finish 8-7-1. Not crazy
Eagles lose to Rams and Texans to finish 7-9
Carolina loses to Saints twice to finish 7-9
Washington is done.
Tampa loses to Dallas to finish 7-9
Vikes lose to Seattle and Chicago and either Miami or Detroit to finish 7-8-1

Lots of stuff has to happen, but nothing is crazy.

Just sayin....

The craziest part of that scenario is the Packers winning out. They have yet to win on the road and play 2 of their remaining 3 on the road.

Pro teams often react to a coaches in-season firing by playing better. it' remains to be seen if that lasts another 3 weeks

It's actually easier than that. Eagles only have to lose once more, as do Carolina and Washington. Tampa is already out. The only really tough part I see (besides us beating CHI) is the vikes dropping 3 games. But hey, until we're mathematically out, I'll keep hoping.

It's brave of you to speak out, Bo. I wasn't sure anyone would have the courage to do so, but you like a select few of us must have gotten the message. Indeed, "the fox is in the valley." So, here goes:

1) Many people are saying AR and Mason *did* work together to get MM fired, but did not have knowledge of each other's predetermined actions. Plausible deniability was paramount. Sources tell me instructions were passed via waitstaff at Chives, and dead drops in Kwik Trip restrooms. The real question is who orchestrated their actions. Find the unseen hand behind the plan, and all will become clear. Who had the means? And who would benefit the most from MM being lovingly set free back into the wild?

2) Many people in the banking industry report large sums of money transferred from ARs accounts at Associated Bank (he has refused direct deposit, uses the drive-up) to accounts in shell companies in the Caymans in the hours before and immediately after games. Sources are afraid to speak on record, but the trail is there. Follow the money. You'll find answers to questions you didn't ask, and then some.

3) Rumors around 1265 tell tales of silos so thick ICBMs could have been housed in them. Apparently, Philbin had (has?) a Cone of Silence installed in his office. The aforementioned Cone was used for all communication between Philbin and his staff. Unnamed sources (aka a lot of people) say OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator James Campen was only allowed to leave the Cone on game days. Thus. McCarthy and Philbin haven't been in the same room together, or spoken to each other since 2012. There are reports of them passing each other in the halls of Lambeau without either man recognizing the other.

Any ill-will toward 33 comes from McMarthy's time cleaning toilets as a boy. It's a deeply disturbing story, but one worth telling if a journalist is willing to ask the tough questions and live with the fallout.

Stay strong, Bo. Reach out if you need me. I slit a sheet. A sheet I slit. Upon a slitted sheet I sit.
