Gut Reactions: Listless Green Bay meanders past Washington

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win Sunday afternoon in Lambeau.

  • The opening plan of getting the ball to the tight ends and running backs was fun
  • Until it wasn't.
  • The offense is so disjointed after the initial script. Just hard to watch.
  • That said, always love seeing Big Bob Tonyan in the end zone.
  • Why LaFleur refuses to run the offense through Aaron Jones from the opening snap to the last is baffling
  • Has anyone else noticed that Za'Darius gets those injuries when opposing offenses are putting together a length drive? Some truly sly vet stuff there to disrupt the flow...
  • Rodgers often has opportunities underneath but holds the ball or double clutches and its maddening.
  • The Packers have a...punt returner???
  • I love watching Elgton Jenkins play the game of football. Watching him finish a block is just the best.
  • Preston Smith definitely looked like he had a little extra pep in his step against his former team.
  • Remember this summer when Rodgers was talking about looking at cut ups of this offense and all the big plays they saw in the passing game? I wonder when they're going to get to some of them...
  • The Lambeau crowd was awesome today, even though the Packers were listless throughout much of the game.
  • I still love this team, but right now its like a relative who is frustrating to no end and who needs to get their act together but they're blood and if anyone else talks shit about them, I will throw hands.
  • Go Pack.

If someone told me Jones would get 200 yards from scrimmage, Special Teams would have positive yards and no penalties, and Haskins would be sacked -and harassed all day, I’d have said blowout. If GB doesn’t put it together it will be a long day against da Bears.

I think they’re one of the six best teams in the NFC. If we’re at home and healthy....I could see us advancing. We’re very good In the red zone on both sides and we don’t turn it over very much.

We’re running the ball well and keeping teams to 24 or less most of the time. If Rodgers plays well, we could surprise some people.

Today the Packers got another bad win and proved again, that they are no better than the any bottom ranked team, and certainly no match for any of the top 5 and perhaps more so, the lesser of the playoff teams and why a Division Title will mean nothing...again.

Taryn, you are not wrong in ranking the Packers below the best 7 or 8 teams in the NFL right now. But... they sit with the #2 seed currently. That's a first round bye followed by a home game in January.

If that scenario holds up, anything can happen. We can still dream/hope/pray. And still watch meaningful games well into January.

There's something called the "eye test" and this team is a listing ship at sea waiting for a rouge wave to kill off it's crew. I watched a rookie QB in Denver dismember the Texans on the road, with a handful of beautifully designed plays. We have a HOF QB with con't convert 3rd and 4 with a pass, without apparently holding the ball for 6 seconds.

One of 2 things is happening here, either this offense is complete crap by design, or Aaron Rodgers needs to be exited, because he's never going to run the offense as it's designed. I will say this in Rodgers defense, all day on replays, there was NOTHING there! I know for a fact Washington's defense isn't that good, which just begs the question, "what in the hell are they doing" in the passing game. They look like a High School team on offense

You're right on, this team is pretender, might be one of the worse 10 & 3 teams I've ever seen. Crappy football team, they're 1 & done if they even make the playoffs, which unfortunately seems likely.

I understand the ' anything can happen in the playoffs ' song, I'm talking about the fact that even ifGB win's the Division, makes the playoffs, this team in the bottom of those gaining entrance, even perhaps whichever team comes from the NFCE between Dal/Phi.
At the level the offense is playing and the underwhelming play of the defense at times, we will be a one and done. This team is NOWHERE the talent it takes in win it all and though the record may say different,it's still a step farther than the last two seasons.

Huh...and here I thought when you beat a “bottom ranked team” you “proved” you were the better team.

How many “bottom ranked” teams have victories over the Bears, Vikings, Broncos, Cowboys, Lions, Raiders, Chiefs, Panthers, Giants and Redskins?

There is too much parity in the NFL to get to 10-3 by “luck”.

It was so hard to watch on offense.
Defense held up - I liked the Cover 1 Robber stuff and Jaire following #1 Receiver.
-Josh Jackson had some mistakes but we should give the kid more chances
-Ervin doing wonders
-we had great field position all game did not capitalize (see first comment )

Okay...After 13 games the Packers are 10-3 (GOOD)…. After the initial couple of drives in just about EVERY game, the Packers offense sputters and stalls the remaining 2.5 to 3 quarters for the most part (Bad)… In at least 10 of the 13 games MLF is unable to make an adjustment or so it seems. It's as if he empties his bullets on the first 2 drives or so and then he's got almost nothing (UGLY).

Rodger let one ball go today - 3rd and 15 at the 6 to Aaron Jones. That was a pass!! He can do that on a regular basis, but he is so afraid to throw an INT, that he won't throw over the middle or into coverage. It is killing this offense. Let the ball go Aaron!!! See it and RIP it!!

When are his best numbers? best throws? most Rodgers like? When the defense is off-sides and it is a free play. That is when the magic happens. He needs to treat all plays like the defense is off-sides - especially on 3rd down. The offense would roll!! We may throw a couple INTs, but the 4 TDs would more than make up for it. Nobody is scared of an offense that needs 100 yards of separation from the receiver before the ball is thrown.

GO PACK!!

Random thoughts. Rodgers ego on full display today, came close to hurting this team. O line beat a very good Washington D line in run game. Too bad Rodgers kept checking out of winning runs. 3 and 1. 3 and 2. Hey instead of playing hero ball, how about moving the chains jerk. (Yup, I'm angry) Jones was awesome. Williams was a monster today. When they are that good, you get them the damn ball. Defense not pretty but effective, good enough today. Mason Crosby sure didn't look old.... Week 14 grind it out victory. (Sigh) I need a (root) beer.....

No Guice, no Kerrigan, a rookie quarterback 5 games into his career on one good leg, and the Packers squeak past the Redskins. The Packers are playing down to the level of their competition again, typical Mike McCarthy football.

What was it Tom Brady said a few weeks ago after a ugly win by the Patriots, "It doesn't feel like a win".

My psychological evaluation is that the Packers knew subconsciously they would never be threatened by the Redskins after the first quarter and therefore muddled their way through the rest of the game. I really don't think the offense is that bad, although clearly it's not that good, either.

MLF isn't much good at making halftime adjustments. Not much creativity. And typical slow tempo and holding on to the ball too long by Rodgers.

Game balls for A. Jones and Ervin. Nice to have a punt returner who isn't afraid to field the ball and has some vision once he does so.

I am cautiously optimistic that we're going to see a better offensive effort for the remaining three games--the Packers know they won't be able to dally around like they did today.

Who is this Hackett guy?

Isnt the OC suppoised to be an actual asset to the team?

He should be working with MLF and AR to correct some of this "listlessness" that seems to come from the offense failing to adjust and falling back into the same old wagon ruts.

The run game today was rockin, why not run a bit more in pass situations? It was working for 6 yds + regularly.

Gmo needs to G-g-o right N-n-o-w, his snaps are a complete waste, same with Pre-season Jesus, if you cannot produce in the real NFL, just fade off the roster. Churn the bottom until someone like Lazard steps up and surprises in a good way, then keep them and use them.

I keep hoping for a solid display from this team. I get wins and Im thankful, but Im still waiting for some semblance of consistency in effort commensurate to the talent level of the players.

I am beginning to doubt this coaching staff already. Hackett-OC? Getsy-QB? Outten-TE? Whitted-WR? Serious critical review may be needed.

As for the rookies, there are NO MORE ROOKIES! It is past week 13. This staff has seen these guys play and learn and develop over the first 13 games, time to set a role and place firm expectations on the 1st and 2nd year guys and hold them accountable just like veterans now. This team needs this to take the steps needed to truly improve as a team and just not a better record.

I will be looking for signs. How about you? Are you a status quo fan or a continuous improvement fan?

Being realistic, I'm not seeing much that would indicate we are nothing but a one an done playoff team, regardless of seeding. D continues to be awful against the run and still can't defend the middle of the field. Rashan Gary continues to be the biggest disappointment of any high draft choice in this years draft, he must be horrible to get so little playing time. Maybe they will get light in a bottle when the playoffs begin - I wouldn't count on it.

An underachieving college player with a possible shoulder injury with the #12 pick. So many good players on the board; Hollywood Brown, Sweat, Burns, McLauren, on and on... and Gute picks this bum. Huge fail.

Yeah what a terrible offseason he’s had! Only 4 of his free agent signings have been any good. And don’t even get me started on our new rookie offensive lineman.

In all seriousness he was chosen because if you haven’t noticed The NFL is a sport where injuries happen and backups are needed. “But he’s the 12th pick in the draft he should be better than this”. He’s played 13 NFL games. Can the kid have a little bit before us fans decide to cut him?

95% of people on this website are status quo fans. I have tried, but they dont get it. I am thankful the Packers are 10-3 and may end up 13-3 or 12-4. Unfortunately, that means absolutely nothing. This team could be easily 4-12 next year. Look at previous Super Bowl contenders Philadelphia and Atlanta. You get one chance, just one chance and you have to make the most of it. Philadelphia and Atlanta are not even going to make the playoffs this year. Have the Packers done good? Yes. Are we happy with the improvements? Yes. Are we overall happy? In some ways, other ways we are still skeptical . Now was this the year we should have gone a little deeper and gotten Emmanuel Sanders who put up 157 yards yesterday and TD? Dunno - too risky? Do we wait until next year to get seasoned offensive talent? Because rookie's unfortunately again for the most part start the season off good but end just eh. And, the 2nd year might be worse. It's not until maybe the 3rd year you start seeing things and that just might be the average tenure in the NFL. Also, we can have the greatest team, but if Rodger's goes down, then the Packers are done. Did I think we would be 10-3. Yes, but only for the fact we had all those home games early. Bottomline: is we HAVE to make some SERIOUS Free agency splashes on the offensive side of the ball as to the receiving corps and we still need another RB like Aaron Jones and my lordy we need a huge NT to clog up the middle rub game. We have to be ALL in next year. Now, I'm not knocking the Packers out this year as everyday and every game changes, especially with injuries can turn even the best team Baltimore to an average team without Lamar Jackson. The days of building a team are done. You hff have 1-3 years to get your team in the Super Bowl and win it.

I've been very harsh towards Mennenga. Ervin's performance throws that into some doubt: perhaps Shepherd and Tremon Smith were just that bad. GB only had 9 punt returns in the first 12 games. Today is a small sample size, so it bears watching.

I wouldn't give up on your criticism of Mennenga just yet. The blocking still doesn't look very sharp, but an aggressive and confident returner certainly helps.

I with Guam on this one. But a good part of this is who the Packers have playing on special teams. They're not that good. That's a GM issue for next season. With the playoffs will the Packers insert more of their core players into the units. I don't know...

This may be as close to a heavy package we'll see for the rest of the year under Pettine. Washington is limited in the WR, so Green Bay went cover 2 with quarters and Alexander on Mclaurin. Keep the ball in front, and double on what ever side Mclaurin line up on. Not pretty, but kept them out of the end zone right up till the end. More importantly, reduced Washington run game. Good enough...

Pettine also used a base 3-4 (three D-linemen) some of the time which was a change for GB. It was certainly more effective in containing Washington's run game.

First was 4 yards, then 5 yards, and then WOW, 18 yards, all were 2019 team records!
Pretty much sums up the type of play we're seeing from the Packers this year.

WRs who struggle to get open and a QB that absolutely will not throw a contested ball - a prescription for an ineffective offense. Juxtapose that to the final minutes of the SF - NO game where both Brees and Garappolo were throwing contested balls on almost every play. And both NO and SF offenses scored on their final possessions.

We need help at WR, but I am beginning to think that is not the whole solution. MLF has got to get QB1 to trust his receivers or we may never have a Super Bowl grade offense during Rodgers' remaining years. I can't believe I am actually saying that, but that is what my eyes were telling me from this game. IDK, maybe I need to get my eyes checked......

The other part is Rodgers not trusting this offensive scheme. He is too often reverting to the pass first under McCarthy. That's understandable, he grew up in the system. But MLF is running a classic run to daylight which sets up the play action. Rodgers is not giving the run enough time to push the secondary in, and it effects both play calls and the pass pro and makes Rodgers more of a target in the pocket. Rodgers shows no patience, and that is hurting this offense..

It is beyond disheartening to read comments from fans bitching and moaning about a WIN. Ask the Texans if they would have taken a 5 point win today. It’s the NFL, a win is a win. Back to back playoff-less seasons and instead of being excited about (probably) returning to the playoffs the majority opinion is “what’s even the point of a playoff game? We’re going to lose anyway”. Get in the playoffs and anything can happen. Especially with a first round bye.

Saw a couple crazy things today. Jimmy Graham dropped Montez Sweat with a shoulder, and Rashan Gary hurried the QB.

Well, the last two seasons the Packers were one of the bad teams; so it's progress that we can now beat the bad teams and yet be disappointed.
The hard thing is that so many of these games leave fans with high levels of exasperated frustration. It's darn right unhealthy.
While we should be ecstatic at our current record of 10-3, why is it that we're so often feeling a kind of confounded and conflicted angst?

It’s because winning ugly against poor teams doesn’t provide the euphoria of victory over quality teams. Had we defeated or even contended against the 9ers, this entire thread would have a different theme, feel, tone, whatever you want to call it.
Beating shit teams and getting crushed by good teams leaves most, including me, unhappy.

Nice to finally get some punt return yardage, although the offense usually didn't do anything with the great field position. Practically the first time all year I recall the returner actually having space when catching a punt. Anyone know if we did something different in blocking the gunners and setting up a return, or did the Redskins punter just not get good hang time? Running north/south after catching the punt--what a great idea that not only gains yards but reduces the likelihood of illegal blocks in the back.

A win is a win and never easy in the NFL. With that said, I am concerned with the way we are winning. It won't work going forward and in the playoffs. I expect a difficult game against the Bears as always, but if we play this way it could be a loss. Going to face the Queens will be extra tough if our offense can't play more than a few scoring series. I love the Pack and always support them, but I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't concerned. So,- I praised Arron Rodgers for playing like an MVP all year. Now I'm going to say he looked like last year's QB. He's being paid big bucks. It's on him to give the defense time to rest. The person getting the rest this game was Arron Rodgers. He needs to put the nail in the coffin. Put it away! He let the Redskins hang around. The risk of mayhem became increasly possible. The OL gave him enough time. The future of this team is on his shoulders again.

Agree with your analysis. To me, Rodgrs has chances to hit guys unnderneath but holds the ball looking down field for the big, spectacular play. Rodgers could be doing what Brees does and get the ball out to play makers but he has a bad habit from the past, waiting for the big play to develop instead of just moving the chains. It's up to him if he wants another Super Bowl, he has the talent to do it, but the question if he will.

- "Kenny Clark and the JAGs" was all I could think while watching the run defense.
- Disjointed and underwhelming offense due to the numerous self-inflicted errors.
- Here's hoping MLF learns from year 1.
- I agree with Aaron, go back to that offense when Adams was out and the backs were featured.

- Off topic, but my first time watching badgers last night, Taylor was impressive.

GB can run the offense through the RBs. Sometimes GB can run the offense through the WRs. If that fails, the team can usually revert to the RBs.

What GB has not been able to do is get the RB threat to complement the threat from the receivers. It always seems to be a zero-sum issue.

Yup, it wasn’t a thing of beauty. I don’t care. Packers are 10-3 well on there way to making the playoffs. Only 12 teams will make the playoffs. I have no idea what will happen. Face it neither do you. I am guessing that some of you weren’t around for the mid to late 70’s Packers through damn near the entire 80’s. My God even the Bears won a SB in 1985. Talk about depressing. Suck it up, get some perspective and enjoy the trip to the playoffs no matter how long it lasts. Remember, only one team of all this teams is walking off completely satisfied. Just the nature of the beast.

The first option needs to change from Adams to Jones. He's the best playmaker and when they do that and just let Adams flow back into the game later, they're a better offense. Especially those short passes to Adams on 3rd down. While I'm ranting, Lewis should be starting, ,not Graham. And Lazard over Geronimo. Just my thoughts...

For all of the conflicted feelings of us fans, the good news is the Packers have three weeks to show us some grace and efficiency on offense.
My sense of things is that the talent is there for catching passes and running the ball and blocking.
The question is Aaron Rodgers. I think he's still got the game, but is he willing to adjust his ways to orchestrate a new offense of creative craftsmanship that moves the chains and gets a variety of skill players involved?
With this new offense as a work in progress, some patience is in order. What I'm wondering is if Rodgers is at least making a determined effort to change his ways, or is he stubbornly resistant?
As always, I'm rooting for our stellar QB big time, and am trying to cut him some slack -- but if he doesn't have his heart in it by the end of this season, it seems time for him to move on.

The d did well and there were punt returns!

Every week in the NFL is a new thing and you can look like crap one week and like a star the next.

The packers played poor and won. That must mean they were better than this team and that's progress from the last few seasons.

Some thoughts...first let me say that in week 14 of this season, Im a whole lot happier than week fourteen of last season. Team is competitive, locker room is good , the young guys we drafted are for the most part making contributions. That being said, the offensive continues to sputter.....Aaron Jones is the real deal. Use him....Geronimo Allison might be playing somewhere else last year. He caught a break today on that fumble that wasn't. Aside from the drops this year, he has also developed fumblegitis. The receivers as a group need to do more work on the routes.....we are thirteen games in and nobody has stepped up and grabbed the number two receiver spot by the cajones. Matter of fact, Aaron Jones has done a better job running routes better than everyone except Adams. The defense did a nice job today, but there are still a lot of busted coverages taking place in the secondary. It was nice to see Adrian Peterson NOT rush for a hundred yards today.....also nice to see some actual kick returns. AR is hanging on to the ball too long trying to make things happen....sacked three times today. All things considered, even with the uneven performances, we are first in the central, and are currently positioned for a first round bye. GOPACKGO!

Not this year with this offense. Just look at the NO and SF game. Has AR EVER put up numbers like that? He should have been able to against the Redskins. I don't like those kind of games, but this should have been something like 40 - 10 today.

I'll be rooting for Packers all the way. But let's face it. This offense under MLF is not clicking. I know it's his first year and this is a big step over the last couple years. But it being his first year also shows negatively. AR missed a bunch of throws today. It's painful to watch JG plodding around. O line has regressed. Who would have thought that they STILL wouldn't be able to scheme receivers open.

There are lot's of positives but other than Jones and the Smiths, none very big. This team is going nowhere without AR playing big and he just isn't. If he wants to win ugly, then take the quick short passes and move the chains. I don't think any of the other top teams are scared of AR the way they used to be. Would you be?

I just never expected an ugly offense with AR at QB after MM. Winning ugly is better than losing ugly. I just does not feel very good. All those telling us to be happy being 10-3 are the same ones that told us to ignore the loses to LA and SF. My son in law would get frustrated when I would complain about not making the playoffs. He's a Miami fan. So if you're Miami, 10-3 is just a dream and of course you would celebrate. But for the Packers and AR, 10-3 and getting embarrassed in California (or anywhere) raises many questions.

I'll probably get a lot of down votes, but forget the statistics. IMO, MLF has not been very good. He has been ok and good for a first year coach. And I am afraid that AR is simply not as good he used to be. Still pretty good. Just not elite.

Please someone at CHTV break down the offense in this game for us (me) based on personnel. I loved what they did when they went multiple tight ends and/or a fullback. Seems like as soon as they go back to 11 personnel they struggle. I'd like to see how the stats and efficiency break down by personnel.

Watching this game I long for Mike McCarthy offense. That offense was so potent. It was the times when it was not effective, but number of points was way over this year Packers showing...

Predictability? Either deep throw or run game on 1st down. Guess why opponents are able to stop offense. Sorry, but you can not throw long pass to Jimmy Graham as he runs like MVS and long throw to MVS as he runs like Jimmy Graham. You got over thrown and/or under thrown balls with result of lost downs....

I don't know why this should be so hard to admit. Of course the Packers' offense is sputtering. The Packers have ONE (1) wide receiver and a whole lot of dog doo. Gutey rolled the dice on the development of young receivers, lost hard on that gamble, and now we're left with this.

Kumerow is a myth that doesn't exist in reality. Geronimo Allison has an impressive name, and is not in the least bit impressive in any other way. (I'm still laughing because what-his-name from this site gave Allison a game ball for last week's game - a game in which Allison logged the second highest number of snaps among wide receivers, and finished the game with 2 catches for 20 yards.) Allison is on pace for 300 yards total this year. Scantling might be the biggest disappointment of them all. It's like he has totally forgotten how to play the game. After starting the season in pedestrian fashion, in the past six weeks he's caught 3 balls for 22 yards. Yeah, in SIX WEEKS. Lazard? He's a feel-good story for an undrafted free agent who has overachieved to become an average WR3 at best. You can love his potential if you want to, but since he "burst onto the scene" (LOL) his numbers extrapolated out for a whole season are 700 yards and 4 TD. That's an ordinary WR3 in a passing offense, not a cause from great rejoicing.

Face it... outside of Adams, these guys are nothing more than bodies on the roster.

The Rodgers doesn't tHrow to the middle often enough is such a recurring theme here. At last we got some stats on how much he does or doesn't throw there. Next step is for Dusty to weigh in on how those stats fit into the overall scheme and whether real opportunities exist there.

Let me state glass half full observations:

It is nice to have a Top Five NFL RB again and see him get the ball. It has been a long time since Ahman Green was on the field.

The Packer O line did a very nice job against a very good Redskin D line.

The Packer D finally showed the signs of what we saw in the first 4 games. Held the skins to 9 points until they broke late in the 4th playing really soft, prevent D.

Maybe the STs finally awoke? Amazing what a few good returns and solid punting can do for a group.

ML and Hackett have plenty of tape to view showing the horsepower of 2 TE sets. Let’s see more Tonyan/Sternberger. Those two can stretch the D in ways Graham/Lewis never will.

Lambeau is rocking again....winning does that. It will not be a friendly place for opposing offenses in January!

Three tight ends Lewis, Sternberger, Tonyan
Quarterback Rodgers
Tailback Jones
Fullback Veldheer
Straight hand off to Jones behind Jenkins with Veldheer leading the play from the fullback position. Pull Lewis in motion to hit the same hole.
Play should be called road grader left. It is time to run some smash mouth football and wake our line up.
Result 6 yards.

#2. Replace Jones with Williams. Replace Veldheer with Vitale.
Run the exact same play for Williams.
Road Grader left.
Result 3 yards and a pile of dust.

#3, No substitutions. Hurry up offense.
Run the exact same play over left guard. Fake play action to Williams. Quick pass to Tonyan in the seam.
Road Grader left to Tonyan.
Result 20 yards straight down the Bears' mouth.

It is time to send a message. It is time to set the tone for the game. There is no better way than to put the Bears on their heels and to get our linemen ready for the massacre at Lambeau.

Packers will win this one 34-13
