Gut Reactions: 2014 Week 15 vs The Bills

Post-game anaysis for the Green Bay Packers 21-13 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday.

Corey Graham breaks up a pass intended for Jordy Nelson by Timothy T. Ludwig—USA TODAY Sports.

  • Well, this week should be fun.
  • Seattle, Detroit, and now Buffalo. Packers are going to have to deal with this good-defenses-on-the-road stigma.
  • As crazy as it sounds, this was the game you wanted the Packers to lose if they had to lose one. Get it out of the way, regroup, and go on a run.
  • That said, it's tough to swallow a loss on a day where Green Bay hurt themselves as much as the Bills beat them.
  • I mean, Jordy. That drop. Just brutal.
  • Pretty clear that the Bills wanted to get physical with the Packers wide outs. Yes, there were a bunch of calls that got missed, but if it keeps working, teams are going to keep playing them that way. Green Bay simply has to fight through those things and adjust.
  • Speaking of receivers, just a brutal day all around from nearly all of them.
  • I did like how McCarthy went to the Cobb-in-the-backfield package later in the game. Buffalo had no real answer for it.
  • I know a lot of people will give JC Tretter grief for that play at the end against Mario Williams, but that's an awfully tough spot for a guy to come in for his first extensive work of the year. Williams is one of the best pass rushers in the game. He made a play.
  • As I've been saying for weeks, power running games are going to be this team's kryptonite. They have tons of trouble against power if Capers can't commit numbers against it. He just doesn't have the guys up front.
  • Interesting to see some more extensive time for AJ Hawk this week. Have to think that's due to the amount of base defense they played.
  • Brutal penalties against the Packers today, though I would have liked to have seen the holding call against Sitton that had McCarthy swearing like a sailor. Thanks for nothing FOX.
  • Have to get the back shoulder signals sorted out. It's one thing to go to the back shoulder throws in Lambeau. But it looked like Rodgers and the receivers had no clue what the other was doing on those attempts early on.
  • After a strong start to the season, the special teams have fallen apart.
  • The Packers have now had 6 kicks blocked in their last 11 games.
  • I know it feels like the sky is falling. It isn't. Don't let the hysterical hyenas get you down.
  • You can bet McCarthy and Rodgers will get some heat this week for calling 45 pass plays on a day where they were averaging over 5 yards per carry. In a game where they were never far behind, that is not ideal.
  • I look forward to reading the comments for your calm and rational views.
  • Go Pack.

I know we all overreact and (mostly) tongue-in-cheek call for Capers, Slocum, etc. to be fired, here and on the live blog. But our special teams have not only given us nothing, but have been a negative most of the past few years. I know Slocum and McCarthy are close but I sure hope Shawn "leaves to pursue other career opportunities" after this season. Imagine this team if special teams was even half as good as the 1996 team.

Sloucum can spoon McCarthy all he wants on his private time.
He IS responsible for special teams.
When they do not perform someone has to be held accountable.
If McCarthy allows performances on special teams to continue as they are then we will know there is no accountability and there never will be.

Defense had a good game, they only allowed 12 points, some of which came on very short fields after turnovers. Offense and special teams fell apart today. People have bad days, teams have bad days- it happens. I don't expect the offense to look anywhere close to that bad again the rest of the season.

It's been a problem for a long time, but this year they're just spiraling downward.

How many consecutive games have we had a kick blocked? What an embarrassment. And it's on film, for everyone to see.

This loss is squarely on the shoulders of AR and the Wide outs. Just an all around terrible performance; the likes of which I can't remember out of this team.

The running game looked pretty good. i would've liked to see more, but like MM I just knew our offense would get rolling eventually. Right?

The defense actually looked pretty good... going against a QB who missed many big plays. On that vital third down play we had an ILB on the outside WR. The WR went inside and was wide effing open. Orton didn't even see him.

If this is how we look against good defenses than our playoff seeding means nothing... less than nothing even.

On to Tampa, another place we play like crap, against an opponent with nothing to lose, and whom runs a two high safety defense.

good news - If we keep playing like this the last game against detroit will be meaningless.

Mack is pissed, but he needs to point the finger at himself. Why he gave up on running the ball is a question only he has the answer to. Too bad the Packers beat writers are to chicken shit to make him answer a question.

I am not calling for Slocum's firing because that is never going to happen, but serious question, what would it possibly take for the guy to get fired?

6 kick blocks, kick returns barely get to 20 (if we are lucky), other teams returning punts and KOs for TDs.

Remember, there have been very few injuries this season, what is the excuse for the terrible STs play?

Slocum should walk into MM office tomorrow and resign. The Packers could do no worse with just Zook coaching them. ST have been a issue for a while now. But 6 blocks? Common man!!!

Ugh. Really have to hand it to the O-line today that last play notwithstanding. I don't think the Bills had one sack all game. Hate to say it, but fault lies with AR and receivers. Just kept waiting for them to get in sync. Never did. Wouldn't doubt it if this cost Rodgers his MVP. Don't see us losing in TB or finale vs Detroit. Pick up the pieces and move on.

Chug, i think you nailed it. AR had all day back there, or nearly, to make things happen. AR missed a number of throws, WRs didn't make a number of catches (or worse, popped them up in the air), and that drop by Jordy was just the icing on the cake.

I do disagree with you about the detroit game. I think we are losing that game.

This game will have no effect on his MVP status. Who could even touch it? JJ? Nope, he plays defense on a team that will miss the play offs. Manning? Nope, looking like crap down the stretch who also had a terrible game at home against the Bills. Brady? Not over Rodgers, Rodgers has better stats in every aspect and won the head to head match up.

-The "spot of the fumble" wasn't in the end zone. if the ball rolled 20 yards forward, would we get it there? No.

-Schwartz always has his guys ready to come out and kick us in the shins and take shots. We should be ready for that.

-This was textbook Mike McCarthy, not having his team ready. Dude is an X's and O's genius, but doesn't know how to have his team mentally prepared to play football, ever.

-I don't mind losing games. I just can't stand doing so this way. We are clearly the better team, but we go out there and do not play to our potential.

-Wtf was Aaron's problem today?

-Still no accountability for Slocum. How many consecutive games are we going to have blocked kicks? Defense held this team to 12 points. ST cost us 10.

-Davante is a rookie. He doesn't have that "back shoulder" thing down. It's gonna take him a year to become a pro. I think they're forcing him in there before he's ready. Richard Rodgers too. Takes a year for a TE. Remember what Finley did as a rookie? Run his mouth and drop two deep passes.

-D was the strongest phase of our team today by far. But wow, those missed tackles were UNREAL.

Periera specifically said "spot of the fumble." He also specified that if the ball rolled forward, they would bring it back to the "spot of the fumble."

Agreed that it's a bullshit rule, but I don't even think the rule was adhered to.

Yeah. It was a short week after MNF, and then the Packers had to go on the road against a tough opponent. The Packers seemed less prepared because they *were* less prepared.

I think its a case of good ol overconfidence. They've been scoring at will and playing great. They thought they could just show up and the Bills would crumble. It happens all the time in sports. This could and should be a "good" loss in terms of get your shit together Packers.

I'm not even that pissed. If you play like that against a sound team, you will lose.

When Jordy drops a 94 yd walk-in, that couldn't have been handed to him any better, you know its not your day.

Tackling sucked. So many times we should've had stops in the backfield, guys just refuse to wrap up, just throw shoulders. Mike Daniels comes to mind.

Kind of difficult to dominate an O-Line when you're the only threat. It's kind of unfair, but I totally understand where you're coming from with calling out Daniels. I'm with you on that. He has to put or shut up. Or the least - better the play of his surrounding DL.

I'm speaking of a particular play which Daniels had a clean shot on the RB for a big loss after others had slowed him down. Instead of wrapping him up, he threw a shoulder. The back promptly turned a loss into a sizeable gain... all because Daniels refused to wrap up.

I've given up on wondering why their tackling is the way it is at times. It's either someone's teaching that way of tackling or we just have bad tacklers. One or the other. That simple.

Actually, if the Seahawks and Lions win today, then the Packers will be just 6th in the playoff standings. It's not over yet with a spot in the playoffs. 10-6 is not going to cut it. Hope they can get it together against Tampa. Today was a disgrace, as far as any WR not named Cobb is concerned. When the running game was humming, McC resorted to throwing the ball. Brutal.
If anybody would've told me that the D would only give up 12 points today and the Packers lost then I'd have thought that person needs to have the head examined. But overall an off-day of the QB and the perimeter players. OL and RBs played very well for the most part. Adams has hit the rookie wall, and Boykin is not an NFL WR.

- This game looked just like that lions game did.
- Defense gave up only 12.
- Offense was straight up awful.
- Right tackle replacement made crucial mistake at the worst possible moment.
- Other notes:
- Curse of the Neard?
- KEEP RUNNING!!!!!!
- Starks had a good game minus a crucial drop. Good homecoming if they would have fed him the rock a little more.
- Good job Tramon. Keep the naysayers at bay.
- Peppers......we need you for playoffs Dawg
- Clay...... Outside of that replay of him getting creamed....he looked awesome.
- I think our special team woes on block are because Sutton and lang aren't in there for kicks anymore with their injuries.
- Let's get all three phases working again.
- Home field that everyone was hoping for......yeah...that hurt. But let's just get on a roll heading into the tourney.....and play anyone anywhere to win this thing to make it maybe even more gratifying? Yeah....let's do that!!!!!
- As Aaron said: way rather have a loss now

Can someone please clarify something for me: I thought that if players on IR then they cannot be on sidelines or even be around the team. But I've seen BJ Raji now several times during the last weeks around McC on the sidelines. Or did I get that wrong and the rule is only if they are suspended, or if they were on short term IR then they can practice after 8 games, but if they are on long-term IR it doesn't matter since they won't be able to play in any way?

I really don't think they know what holding or pass interference is.

I went back and looked at the Bakhtiari holding penalty that negated a 1st down early in the 2nd half... Bad call. really, really bad call. No holding on him.

I still don't know how there wasn't pass interference on the one Quarless pass down the sideline, and the one which went through Boykin's hands, it looked like he was being held on it...

Also, i thought shots to guys' heads weren't allowed anymore? Both Bulaga and Mathews took bad shots to their heads. No flags...

Bad day for the refs.

I hope they never see those refs again and the announcers... I think they are still trying to figure out how to say Micah Hyde's name...

Ugly in so many ways, yet I feel strangely encouraged by the fact that our Oline seriously handled probably the best front 7 in the league in both run blocking and pass protection. Rodgers won't be off like that often; the receivers won't suck like that often; Jordy drops that pass one time out of 100; STs, though they aren't good, won't give up that TD often. It sucks to lose the inside track to the #1 seed, but I'm not that concerned about the team.

Let's hope it's not super windy in the playoffs though.

I can live with everything that happened today - the off day for #12, bad performances by the WRs, missed tackles, bad ST play. But the one thing that really concerned me was the apparent lack of communication between AR and his WRs. I had not seen that for a long time. I've seen bad Packer games, bad individual performances, but rarely in the last few years have I seen AR and his WRs not being on the same page. This late in the season with this winning streak and the way the O played recently, that is extremely concerning to me actually.

Do we blame Rodgers or the WRs???

Even though Boykin was interfered with on Rodgers' last INT - I think he's pretty much done. It's always something with him. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a just a taaaaaaad bit of Janis these last two games.

We need Mike Daniels to slap the sh*t out of Peppers and get his head right and then we need someone to slap the sh*t out of Mike Daniels. Just watch the game over and watch how little effort Peppers give. He was even pancaked by the Bills' WR Woods. WTF!? Peppers BETTER be holding back for HELLUVA playoff push! I seen a handful of run plays where Daniels could have made a diving tackle but he just kept on running trying to catch the RB. SMH. He even tried to shoulder tackle the RB when Micah Hyde had him wrapped up by an ankle -- that led to a whiffed tackle and a first down I believe.

So,the refs missed 2 OBVIOUS DPI's which should have led to first downs -- which could have led to and easy 3 or 7.

Special Teams...Special Teams...What's special about ours!? Our last score before the KO I said to myself,"watch Mason kick the ball out of bounds or make it a certain touchback!" and that's exactly what he did. WHYYYYYYY do we wait 'til crunch time to feel like our ST Unit can't get sh*t done and play it safe!? Quit giving teams these extra few yards because we're damn sure not getting any.

What other eff'ery went on today during the game?

This might not be so bad, but I think MM got a bit desperate and showed a bit too much of the Cobra formation. I don't think that was part of the gameplan until we something (anything) to spark the offense.

What about that Sam Barrington flag!?

What about that cheap shot on Bulaga!?

Oh yea! Umm,I'm going to need Dom to stop blitzing both MLBs AND the slot corner when teams have more than 3 WRs (plus a TE) on the field. I forgot the name of that Bills' TE but that clutch 3rd down conversion was an easy pitch and catch.

That Sam Shields right corner blitz against a 5-Wide formation was also ill advised. That led to a 40+ yard play I believe.

Its' the NFL. Upsets happen, especially on the road.

Exactly. This was an obvious trap game. Short week after playing on MNF. On the road. Playing a good team that HAD to win. This was about as predicable an upset as you are going to get.

Especially considering it was the first time I have ever seen a Packers game live, that will be a tough one to swallow. Still, as Nagler said if they had to lose a game this was the one to do it.

The Bills are no joke, but it would be nice to see the Packers win on the road against a good defense. Just cements the fact that this team needs home field come January.

For all you anti-troll, bleeding-heart optimists:

This was good for the team - a real wake up call. So just R-E-L-A-X and the Packers will sneak into the playoffs and sneak away with another Lombardi trophy.

MVP seasonn resumes next week in Tampa - make book on it. Just an insignificant blip this week. It's a long season. Every team has an occasional let down. All their goals are still right in front of them.

Today the Packers scared the heck out of the competition (Detroit). They know that the Packers are setting a trap for them.

Defense was pretty good today. Would have been even better if Peppers wasn't out of gas, Hawk wasn't getting pushed around and Bills offense was even worse than terrible.

Hey Aaron - just tell the truth. There's nothing worse than trying to put a positive spin on horse shit.
Quarterback - terrible
Receivers - terrible
Special teams - horrendous
Defense - ok except tackling and playing against a poor offense
Peppers - out of gas
Hawk - targeted and pushed around
Coaching - see special teams, lets get away from the run

Looked like Pack was moving in the right direction - wrong!

WTF, they've averaged around 6 YPC the last 2 games. With that kind of production they should own anyone.

I'm as big a Packer fan as anyone, but we've got to be realistic. Our defense played well yesterday but hardly against a top offense. Also our offense has struggled badly against top defenses in three of the losses (SEA, DET, BUF). We needed that win yesterday in hopes of home field throughout. Going to be extremely tough if we have to go to SEA.

OK, I'll say it. The refs sucked. Our guys were getting mugged and the refs decided that this was the game that they were going to "Lett'em play." If they called this game like they called the pre-season it's VERY different.

I hate to be the fan that hates the zebras, but in this case I DO.

The reason we lost this game is because of dropped passes, very poor special teams, off game by Rodgers, and poor tacking , not the fault of the refs. BUF deserved to win, in fact they should have had another INT or two which would have increased their lead.

EXACTLY right.

I would also include not running the damn ball more, but hey, you hit 99% of 'em.

2 serious questions:

1 - Has Dajuan returned one past the 30 this year? If he has, I can't recall.

2 - Can we let DannyDS go back to calling himself Stroh? It's so obvious.

1. NFL.com says he's got a long return of 41 yards this year, so it's happened at least once.

His average return of 20.7 puts him dead last out of the players that have returned 20 or more kicks this year. Every time he takes it out I just hope he can hit the 20. A big return never even crosses my mind anymore.

2. That might lure Sampson back, which would be worse than the present charade.

Interesting, I really don't recall that.

Maybe it was the opening return against the pats that those dicks at CBS chose not to show. Probably not, likely just poor memory on my part.

Thanks.

Btw- solid point on #2.

"I did like how McCarthy went to the Cobb-in-the-backfield package later in the game. Buffalo had no real answer for it."

I liked it, too. So MM ran it for 3 plays in one series and one play the next series, and then never ran it again IIRC.

Why does he do things like that? Just to show what they can do? How about doing whatever, plan or no plan to win a salvageable, winnable, game! Aargh. Go pack go. 60 minutes at TB, all weapons on deck!!!
