Green Bay Packers Pre-Draft Ramblings

The NFL Draft is right around the corner, so here are some ramblings of just about anything and everything on my mind.

With the NFL Draft less than a week away, it is time for some of my pre-draft ramblings--which is basically a brain dump of everything Green Bay Packers related that has been on my mind.

- Of course, we want the Packers to find impact players right away, but the draft is about planning ahead as well. Two positions that appear to be in decent shape for 2022 but become very thin in 2023 are safety and tight end. Currently, under contract next season at each position are Vernon Scott and Josiah Deguara--that's it. So don't be surprised to see any early-round picks spent on tight end or safety.

- Edge rusher is a position that I'm pretty much expecting Green Bay to address early on. While Smith and Gary both ranked in the top-10 in terms of total pressures generated in 2021, there were issues against the run, and a lack of impact plays when they weren't on the field. Edge rusher is one of the most important positions in the game and a heavily rotated one as well, which means depth is important--OLB coach Jason Rebrovich mentioned that he wants a weekly rotation of four players. Everyone wants Green Bay to find that first-round receiver, but a first-round edge rusher selection would be a very Packers-esque move.

- Whether it's the draft, free agency, or preferably both, the Packers need to bring in some competition for Yosh Nijman at right tackle. Nijman held his own last season; however, he hasn't played right tackle since his final year of college, and in general, he still needs to continue developing. Right now, the only healthy tackles on the roster are him, David Bakhtiari, and maybe Cole Van Lanen--although he may be better suited at guard. The tackle depth is thin, but a draft pick plus a Dennis Kelly or Rick Wagner-like addition will quickly turn that around.

- Equipped with 11 draft picks and Brian Gutekunst's history in the draft, it sure feels like Green Bay is going to trade up once again. In Gutey's four drafts, he has moved up within the first three rounds five different times and done so in the first round three separate times. If there is a run on receivers early, we could see him be aggressive in order to get his guy.

- We know that the Packers have to add to the receiver position, but in terms of their specific needs, the Packers need a go-to option on the boundary, a vertical threat, and some added YAC would be nice as well. Players who fit each of those molds include George Pickens, Tyquan Thornton, and Treylon Burks, among others.

- Many mock drafts that we've seen have Green Bay taking two receivers with their first four picks--and understandably so. However, my prediction is that they only select one receiver within the first two rounds and then perhaps another third or fourth-rounder. For one, there are other needs to address as well, but I could see the Packers feeling good about a receiver room made up of Watkins, Cobb, Rodgers, Lazard, and for example, Pickens and Thornton.

- I do believe that Watkins is going to be on the Week 1 roster just given the current state of the receiver room, but from a salary cap perspective, that isn't a guarantee. Of Watkins' total earning potential in 2022, which is up to $4 million with incentives, only $350,000 is guaranteed by Green Bay.

- In a recent article, I created a shortlist of first-round targets for the Packers. I began with the top-50 or so on The Draft Network's big board and from there crossed off positions that the Packers haven't typically addressed in the first round--this includes TE, LB, IOL, RB, as well as QB, given that Rodgers just re-signed and Love is still on the team. I then crossed off any players above 21-years-old because, since 2009, the Packers haven't drafted a player in the first round who was over 22, and since 2015, they've selected just one player who was 22. Lastly, of Gutey's 33 RAS eligible picks, 26 have scored above 8.0--so anyone below that mark was crossed off as well. This left me with eight players, which include Daxton Hill, Logan Hall, George Pickens, David Ojabo, Trent McDuffie,  Kaiir Elam, Chris Olave, and George Karlaftis.

- IDL coach Jerry Montgomery told reporters that the team would like to add a pass-rush presence along the interior defensive line. Two names to know who fit that mold are Logan Hall and Perrion Winfrey.

- Typically, the Green Bay Packers covet big-bodied wide receivers--meaning they stand at least 6'0" -- and often taller -- and weigh at a minimum of 195-200 pounds. However, many of the top receivers in this class don't hit those thresholds. It will be interesting to see how or if the Packers adjust. A few players who do hit those marks are George Pickens, Treylon Burks, and Alec Pierce.

- Two popular names that have often been mocked to the Packers over the last month have been WR Jahan Dotson and OT Bernhard Raimann--however, neither meet the typical thresholds that the Packers have for first-round picks. Dotson is on the smaller side, and he also didn't test all that well. Meanwhile, Raimann is going to turn 25-years-old during his rookie season.

- Even if the Green Bay Packers land one of the top receivers in this draft, the receiver room overall is going to take a step back in 2022 without Davante Adams. However, Green Bay has the opportunity to better round out the rest of the roster, something they've already begun doing. With the freed-up cap space from trading Adams, the Packers signed De'Vondre Campbell, Rasul Douglas, Robert Tonyan, and Jarran Reed. They now have four picks within the first two rounds and five in the top-100 to continue elevating other positions, which hopefully mitigates Adams' absence.

- If the Packers hold on to their third-round pick, it just feels like it is going to be a tight end. We know there is a need, as mentioned above, and I believe that Green Bay will have a few options on the board at that time, potentially including Greg Dulcich, Jeremy Ruckert, and Cade Otton.

- While we all look to the draft to provide those big boosts to the roster, more often than not, those upgrades are going to come from players already on the team who assume larger roles and take those Year 2 and 3 leaps that so many successful NFL players make. A few names to watch are TJ Slaton, Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, Josiah Deguara, and Eric Stokes, among others.

- Every draft under Gutekunst, he has selected at least one offensive lineman--including six over the past two drafts alone. With the depth of that unit not nearly as strong as it was a season ago, I'd sharpie in at least two offensive line selections for the Packers in this year's draft.

- In the past, we've seen Gutey pair up veteran free agent signings with early-round draft picks. A couple of examples include signing Tramon Williams and then drafting Jaire Alexander. Or Signing the Smiths to then draft Rashan Gary--and there are several other examples out there. Well, if we are trying to read the tea leaves, two potential early-round picks could be receiver and interior defensive lineman.

- The Packers may have lost Davante Adams, but this roster is still really good.

As long as so many want a wr later in the draft. Just trade Love for a pick. It erases the mistake of not taking one years ago.

Gutey has all the leverage. He doesn't have to trade Love at all. Hell, Love is better than Trey Lance, maybe we should ask for 3 first round picks?

If the Pack came away from rounds 1 & 2 with a haul of Daxton Hill, Logan Hall, George Pickens, and George Karlaftis, not necessarily in that order, I might literally wet myself. Probably not very realistic, but with a couple of moves up, it could.

Hey Paul, great thoughts...yet in big bodied WR prospects you don't list Watson?

I agree with what you wrote about IDL, smartly including Jerry Montgomery's comment to add another IDL with pass rush abilities. Maybe Jerry gave us a glimpse of Gutey's emerging board? And I agree Winfrey and Hall fit the bill.

Winfrey is more like Kenny who can pressure up the middle with strength and his play to the whistle attitude. Hall is more like Z Smith who could rush all across the front. While Z stood up more than rushing down, Hall would likely be the reverse...yet he has talent to play Edge in a rotation with his elite quickness.

IMO, a lot have an illogical aversion to Watson. Some have said a "severe" drop problem. Depending on which site you are on he had either 2 or 5 drops last year on 43 catches. So somewhere between 4-11% drop rate depending. Drops are more of a subjective stat, so some disagreement. The prior year he had more, but what college player wasn't off during the covid shortened year with less time together. So he's shown the improvement you want to see on college players. But not severe by a long shot.

Ja'Marr Chase lead the NFL with either 9 (tied for 1st) or leading with 11 on 81 catches, again depending on site you go to. That's 11-13%. Anyone please tell me you wouldn't want Chase.

Also, NDSU is a run first offense. The most they passed in any game was 25 times. Averaged 17. They don't pass much. Yet with fewer opportunities he lead all receivers with the WRAP stat. Production + RAS. I would pretty much guarantee that given more targets in the NFL, which he should get, he is going to produce.

I'm seeing more mock drafts with him going to KC at #30. Or other teams taking him by mid 30's. But, oh no no no, the Packers can't take him at #28.

I don't get it LP.

NDSU ran the ball for twice as many yards as via passing. Watson had drop issues early and but two last year, most productive. His YAC is a huge offset to any drops regardless, which seem to have been greatly corrected.

I just view Watson as one of the best big bodied WR prospects in this draft ... and I would guess the Pack does as well.

He can catch, take the top off the D, has eye popping YAC.

What else? Elite returner and would be a demon gunner for Bisaccia. That's fills a few big needs. Also produces with the ball in his hands as a RB, Jets, and screens. This fits the MLF O quite well.

And he is a good blocker who would get to the second level in a flash for AJ and AJD.

Oh, also an Honor Student and a Walter Payton watchlist player.

Yeah, I don't think people have read much or read enough on him. Probably other prospects for that matter. I think many just see he's rated by some draftniks around 40 and think, well he must not be good enough.

Also, not sure if many know he is son of former drafted Packer Tim Watson. Son's of former players usually have little to no character issues and love football. They've been taught what it takes to succeed in the NFL. While many may not have the athleticism of their fathers, this kid has more. Much more.

He’s a hugely exciting player who isn’t ready to run in an NFL offense yet but has a massive upside. Would I love him? Yes. Could we use him in a role and on STs this year, probably. Is he going to be a major weapon on O? Not this year. He’s got a lot to learn. This is a pick for next year or the year after. We are in win this year mode.

I think he could do what MVS did as far as getting a safety cheating his way. Is that worth a 1st round pick? I don't see it. I'd like him a lot more in the 2nd round but it probably requires a trade up. If they grab a Watson or Pickens and then get a solid guy like Tolbert at 59 I think that could work.

No. I get it. He’s definitely not MVS, because his Catch% was over 70%, which is quite good. MVS left GB for a $10M/year contract with a 47.3% figure… go figure! Anyhow, Watson is not without some warts in having faced inferior competition - something out of his control. His usage was also not of his doing.

I can see people wanting him at 28 simply because they project he likely won’t be there at 53. I make those kind of draft slot adjustments in projecting players to GB nearly every draft, be always end of round.

Have to admit, he brings special gifts to the WR Room, and, he’ll make the catch. I trust that, and could see Gutekunst tapping him at 28.

Small sample, one year, small school opposition, non pro simplistic offense. He’s as raw as they come. Would I draft him in round 3 on his potential? Yes, like a shot in a normal year. Is he round one worthy? No.

That combine has made modern Al Davises out of a lot of you. We need a WR who can help now and get the trust of AR, not a guy needing to learn a route tree.

I find it odd that so many advocating for the rationality of this win it all with Rodgers year want to spend first round capital on a raw small school athlete. I’d love him if we had a good WR room or cap to sign vets for Rodgers to throw to, but purely on future upside not current value.

Coldworld, I’ve been firmly against it, but, he does have gifts that MVS does not have, he catches the ball. Yes, small sample, subpar competition, all that. Hell I’ve listed their schedule… all of that on his 42 receptions, the whole bit arguing against.

Look, I’m not saying he’s an R1. I’m saying, those who want him, believe he won’t be there to take #53. I agree. Gutekunst may want him. It fits his mold.

Pretty much why I pumped taking Velus Jones #28. I don’t think he’ll be there #53.

I believe Velus to be that special to what we do to pop him there. Players with his abilities don’t come along very often. I think he’s the next Tyreke Hill, but bigger, better. That’s what my eyes tell me. They also tell me he is likely to be one of less than a handful of WRs from this draft to be legit WR1 players in the future.

It’s a mostly role player WR draft this year, more than many going back years. But, there’s some good ones to be had, if you can wrap your brain around some of the events that put talented players in such positions.

***Had NDSU not run so heavily, Watson would likely have had double his receptions, putting him near 90, and this wouldn’t be a discussion. He could have gone for over 2000 yds. Have you considered THAT?

In the “After catch production of the 2022 NFL Draft WRs” chart I shared earlier in these discussions, YAContact was marked blank. It’s because no one could touch him post reception.

With so much of this projecting what a player will do in the Pros, his value appears to have more merit than I originally had considered.

***

Lastly, I don’t think there is a “win it all with Rodgers year,” at all. I believe it’s a fallacy. He won’t change. I have zero faith in him getting past Tom Brady next year. I don’t believe his arm will automatically become stronger to hit these faster-than-MVS young guys deep. It makes no sense to me, and GB would be best off realizing this and trading him now, before the wheels fall off.

Could be Mark Murphy won’t allow that to happen this year, on his way out the door.

We just paid Rodgers a kings ransom that precluded us resigning WRS or bringing in premium FAs. I was an early proponent of Watson when he was projected as a late round project. He is. He’s got all the potential in the world. But we have Lazard, a redemption project in Watkins and an aging Cobb with the cap cupboard bare.

That’s the background for a supposed win it all season that we brought Rodgers back for. It may be the last season that he plays and we have borrowed against the future to do it. We need contributors now. Watson, good though I think he will be, is spending a pick for the future when we are gambling on finding help now. If they pick him In the first it simply underlined that the Rodgers decision was foolish.

The same goes for Williams who, even if he gets fully healthy in time for the season will be a rookie with no practice till September. That’s not a recipe for success even if (and it’s doubtful) he’s recovered full mobility which can take another 6 months in pro athletes.

No injured rookies and no high ceiling projects early this year. Letting Watson pass is a cost of deciding to keep Rodgers and going for the last dance encore. Right now he’s got nothing to tango with and this is our chance to fill up his card.

If you are right and this isn’t a win it all year then why the heck are we ceding all that cap to him? We aren’t going to have cap flexibility while he’s here. The only reason to keep him is because he’s the best chance to win now supposedly. As I say, drafting Watson and Williams would indicate that retaining Rodgers is totally at odds with almost everything else and suggest a FO likely knowing it’s doomed by that contradiction possibly forced on them.

The Packers have to go full on for the now in this draft now they’ve set out their stall with Rodgers, a cap desert and the absence of catchers for Rodgers to throw to. I watch many who praise the retention pushing drafting for the future. Baffling. I know you aren’t one of them.

Coldworld, you know I agree with you mostly here. You never know. This whole Rodgers thing with the hopes of winning it all is as much a Hail Mary as is Watson making significant contributions as a rookie. However, Watson is NOT Lazard. Watson has the speed to take the top off any D, and the versatility to confidently run Jet concepts effectively, when paired with that speed. That tape doesn’t lie on that.

Why did we cede all that cap to Rodgers? To trade him? It’s still a possibility, especially in a historically weak QB draft.

I wouldn’t draft Watson there, but, I could see Gutekunst doing it. Know what I mean? While I prefer other options, maybe it works. If not, he’s a development piece, a dynamic one for the future that we might have over spent on to get. Trading down to take him in the high R2 range not always possible.

One thing about Watson and it shouldnt be a knock against his hands, he had crap QB's throwing him the ball too. His speed is impressive and he is 6'4. More a straight like receiver with separation like Jordy.
MVS problem was he couldnt keep his mind in the game. Most times he never expected the ball and then boom its right there Mr Flub a dub. Jordy knew the pass was coming and mentally prepared for it.
Watson could be a super find.

Excellent article--I think you covered all the bases.

The particular order that the most important needs are going to be addressed are anybody's guess, but as long as it gets done without making expensive trade-ups in the early rounds....sometimes it's just better to let the draft come to you. "The opportunity to better round out the rest of the roster" should definitely be the goal here (many of us have been waiting for this a long time, and that specifically includes special teams potential) --and planning ahead for the possible departures after this upcoming season.

The other thing that would send ripples of joy through me was if Gute could discipline himself to select only two offensive linemen this time; if one is a higher tackle pick, fine, but you know he's going to bring in more competition/projects later, so let's make sure we have some depth/insurance beyond those biggest needs.

I know Iam in the very small minority here splitpea, but I don't think Gute drafts more than two O-linemen and I doubt he chooses any with the top four picks.

Much has been made of the departures of Turner and Patrick and that the Packers lost two quality veteran O-linemen. While that is true, the Packers made the choice to part with both of those men and the cap savings from both were fairly small. The Packers could have easily kept one or both fairly cheaply and yet chose not to.

To me that signals that the Packer front office believes they already have a pretty good O-line group in house right now and will need only developmental players from the draft to fill out the bottom of the O-line roster. If they didn't think highly of Nijman, Myers, Newman and Hanson they would have kept Turner or Patrick or both.

Do you think Gute would really gamble with Rodgers' health relying on a rookie draft choice, even a first round draft choice, if he could have kept Turner for small money? No, he likes his current tackles and IOL.

Okay, bring on the downvotes!

You won't get any from me....That being said, I do think it would be prudent to select an OT on Day 2, at least for insurance purposes. It was a long time ago, but Bulaga did start for most of his rookie season.

I do hope you're right about the front office being confident in the group they have right now.

Many of the fans/commentators forget about rankings on the draft board. While the Packers need a wide receiver, if a player at another position is ranked higher they might go there. What you look for in round 1 is an impact player. That is why the Packers picked Aaron Rodgers though they had Brett Favre.

I think it very likely they will find one receiver out of the first four picks, I wouldn't be surprised to see that pick as the second one in round two.

He also has twice the body control and twice the ability on contested catches than MVS. He's a natural with the ball in his hands.

People knock him for drops.

Olave had 5 drops last year.

Watson had 5 drops last year.

If it's me, I'm not drafting Olave over Watson ever. Olave is small, weak, can't block, and probably wouldn't make it through the season.

Tbh, if Olave and Burks are both there at 22, I take Burks, and come back at 28 and draft Watson, and then get to work on DL, Edge, S, TE, OLx2, RB, CB. WR...

Pretty much agree with your speculations Paul. There are three players that I believe Green bay is looking at w/o tipping their hand. All are in the 3-5 round range. Their write-ups are from Tony Pauline's site.
First guy that seems to me saying I'm a Packer is Troy Anderson, ILB Montana St. Player Ranking 82:
This guy even played QB in college throwing for over a 1,000 yards. Small school but everything about him screams a Packer.
Troy Andersen
LB Montana State

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 243 | RAS: 10

He has great straight-line explosiveness for his frame, and he can rocket through gaps. Andersen brings torrid closing burst to the contact point, and he can close ground in an instant in the box. In coverage, his explosiveness translates especially well. He can launch off his back foot, and he has click-and-close quickness. He also carries a lot of heat as a blitzer.

Going further, Andersen has surprisingly fluid hips. He can flip out of his stance and carry receivers downfield up the seam. He can also stack direction changes and manage open space with his fluidity and lateral athleticism. With his explosiveness and range, Andersen can easily cover running backs on swings and screens. And with his athleticism, he’s a versatile player who can line up at each LB spot and even the slot, depending on matchups.

Dominique Robinson-EDGE from Miami Ohio-player rank-125:
This guy shinned in the Senior Bowl and more than held his own with the Major school players.
EDGE Miami-Oh

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 253 | RAS: 9.74

Robinson’s developmental upside is his top selling point. But the flashes of hand usage and awareness only make that upside more worth banking on. While Robinson is relatively raw with his hands, he’s shown promising glimpses. He can time forceful swipes at the apex, then dip into the pocket. He flashes violence at the point of attack, and he has a twitched-up athletic makeup, which maximizes that potential energy.

Chigozien Okonkwo-TE Maryland player ranking 142:
Another great performer at the all-star games but what isn't mentioned is his blocking....considered best blocking TE in this year's class. Does he sound like a player that Green Bay would want?

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 238 | RAS: 6.45

Right away, Okonkwo falls short of the traditional mold at tight end. He measures at 6’2 1/2″ and 238 pounds. He does have good proportional length with near-33-inch arms, however, and he also has exceptional athleticism for his size. Okonkwo came in with a 4.52 40-yard dash and a 35.5-inch vertical at the NFL Combine, and that athleticism is visible on film.

Okonkwo has the speed and acceleration to stretch the seam and work into space. He’s fairly explosive out of his stance, and he’s also a twitchy mover who can pressure DBs one way and break another. Beyond his RAC work, Okonkwo’s explosiveness also shows up in his route running. He shows good acceleration out of his breaks. He can sink and explode outside with relative ease.

I have no idea if these players are on Gutsey's board, but all three fit that position type Green Bay is looking for, so maybe we will hear one of their names called.

I really like Troy Andersen. I think he will end up the best ILB in this draft. My hope is that everyone sleeps on him except the Packers. Reminds me of Urlacher. Honestly, do a RAS compare. Scary. Hated Bears LB, I know, but who wouldn't have taken him?

Anderson I think is a project. I’m not so familiar with Robinson, but Okonkwo is the one that excites. It’s really only him and Woods from the TE class that I think can help now, because they aren’t liabilities as blockers or ineffectual. I don’t think some of them see the field as a result this year. Okonkwo may actually be able to do more earlier.

Great finds, but the RAS of the TE is below usual Packer standards (straight line speed and leaping are good, but lacks a bit of agility that may allow quicker players to shed his blocks in space because he lacks the burst to cut to go along with the speed, which is also why he isn't as good a receiving threat as he could be).

As a TE that has present value as a blocker and the speed to run up the seam, I’d say he could have his uses in GB. He may be a moderate upside guy, but he’s a high floor one. Just the sort that can contribute now.

Been high on Andersen, and recently saw he’s not great against the run. Early being 1st year at LB, so, not much to unteach. Calls into question though, are the instincts for run stop there? I don’t want to be stuck with another Oren Burks, or a late to the party Martinez, cleaning Tackle stats after the damage is done.

WE NEED RUN STOP! Giving up > 60% on 3rd and short is no way to go through life, son…

That points to players like ILB Muma, 3-Tech Mathis, NT Wyatt or Travis Jones. Safeties Pitre or Cine. None of these 4 players are one-dimensional, run only, or pass only defenders.

Chig? Holy F balls. I love this kid, and quite honestly, I think he’d be a better WR than Treylon Burks!!! Plus, he’s insanely versatile, tough AF. Great blocker. Take him, Brian!!! - PERFECT for LaFleur. I don’t care that we have Deguara. TAKE HIM!!!

Hard no on Chig. We tried the shorter, lighter TE a few years ago with the Mackey winner out of Arkansas, I forget his naME.... THAT SAYS IT ALL!

I agree. Go get a proper receiver than a small non physical TE. Essentially the same thing.

"- Equipped with 11 draft picks and Brian Gutekunst's history in the draft, it sure feels like Green Bay is going to trade up once again."

Bite your tongue! Forget trading up. Trade down Gutey. In fact, use First-Pick so you can trade down 5 times and garner 10 2nd and 3rd rounders...

:P

Seriously though, I hope he doesn't trade up. I wouldn't mind him trading down and adding picks to next year's draft class though.

Trading up in the 3rd/4th could make sense. I’d rather he traded down if he moves before.

Yeah, I just recall trading up for Oren Burks and Jason Spriggs and it makes me want to puke.

Spriggs was TT. I can’t argue with Burks, but a bad draft evaluation is bad whether one traded up or down. Our scouting is decent: trust it.

Having the ammunition to move around late to get a player we see a role for or upside is not bad because Burks was.

I agree. Especially with this draft I see no reason to trade up or even down? There are plenty of receivers and top edge guys we can get in the first without moving. Not to mention we have two two picks so quality is there and filling holes will be done just staying put.

I feel like the author is inside my head . Well reasoned out. I concur that the roster is good. In fact, in my 50+ years watching the Packers, this is the best we’ve ever been at this point in the season.

A little maneuvering by Gutekunst would allow us to have maybe 10 picks in the Top 140, and there are quite a few good players we could get.

I’d like a WR, a TE, an RB, and two O linemen the top 100. Anything else we could put towards defense.

I’m all for it. More picks where the meat of this draft exists, as long as we don’t make misses with superstars up top. Risk. I see merits to taking the best we can, with no trades too. Special talents all over.

40% of all first round draft picks make it the NFL. Make a deal for DK or DeeBo. Trade a 1st and 2nd and Love.

with the money we were going to pay Adams, he wanted out so he didn't take it which was at least as much as he will now get...

My two cents, the pack have two obvious pressing needs: edge rusher and receiver.
I read on Acme Pack that Karlistis from Purdue may just sneek into that 22 spot. He would be a great asset and solve one problem, the next two picks you would still get quality receivers.
My first receiver if available would be Watson who would remind Rodgers of Jordy, tall fast and able to get separation down the sideline, just what we need.
