Game Recap: Packers (Somehow) Beat Lions 23-20, Earn First-Round Bye

A win is a win. No phrase describes the 2019 Green Bay Packers more than that one. The Packers (13-3, 6-0 NFC North) somehow found a way to win Sunday, barely beating the Detroit Lions (3-12-1, 0-6 NFC North) 23-20 in week 17. The win marked the first time since 2011 that the Packers swept the NFC North and they earned a first-round bye in the playoffs as a result of it.

The result? Beautiful. The performance? Not so much. The Packers’ offense struggled immensely Sunday with quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the forefront of a lot of the troubles. In a game that head coach Matt LaFleur said his team was “treating like a playoff game,” the Packers could not have looked more sluggish.

“That was a tough game man. I don’t really even know what to say right now” LaFleur said at his post-game presser. “That’s life in the national football league. But, I’m really pleased with our guys in terms of the mentality of never quitting and being resilient.”

The start the game, the Packers won the toss and deferred, so Green Bay’s defense was the first to get a crack at the Lions Sunday. Despite linebacker Za’Darius Smith being flagged 15 yards for roughing the passer on the first play of the game, the Packers’ defense was able to force a punt after the Lions failed to get a first down of their own. The Packers offense couldn’t do much and struggled to find something on their first possession just as the Lions did. Tight end Jimmy Graham dropped an easy pass on the first play of the game and after that mishap and not much on the next two plays, Green Bay would go three and out.

The game wouldn’t remain scoreless for long, as Detroit had some fun with Green Bay on their next drive. The Lions marched down the field and then for the second week in a row the Packers got caught on a “philly special,” this time paying the price for it. Detroit executed the trick play perfectly and found themselves running into the endzone untouched to go up 7-0.

Green Bay’s offense continued to struggle on their next drive too, resulting in another punt. Luckily, the defense was able to come up big and force a Lions three and out. The Packers looked like they began to finally find a sense of rhythm on their next offensive drive, but a monster sack on third down prevented the Packers from even attempting a field goal to start the second quarter.

The Packers’ offensive struggles continued throughout the half, and their defense could only hold off the Lions for so long before they struck again. Lions’ receiver Kenny Golladay got things rolling for Detroit with a huge 42-yard catch. The Lions made their way into Packer territory and after going for it on 4th and goal found the endzone for their second touchdown of the day to extend their lead to 14-0.

The good guys were finally able to get on the board at the end of the half, but the Lions did not let them gain any momentum for too long. Detroit took advantage of the mere 20 seconds left on the clock and hit a field goal of their own as time expired to make it 17-3 Lions at the break.

The second half looked a bit more promising at first for Green Bay, with some strong runs from running back Aaron Jones, but they still were not able to get on the board after kicker Mason Crosby missed a 51-yard field goal attempt.

Green Bay’s defense came up with a crucial stop after Crosby’s miss and it payed off. The Packers, pinned back at their own five, took it 95 yards to the house on a monstrous third quarter drive. Wide receiver Allen Lazard got things rolling with a nice 18-yard pickup and it was all up from there for Green Bay. With a few hurry-up plays and Rodgers finally starting to connect with his receivers, the Packers found themselves in the end zone for their first touchdown of the day off a 20-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams to make it 17-10. The d-train continued to keep on rolling and forced another three and out on the Lion’s next possession. Green Bay was then able to get on the board again, this time with just a field goal, cutting the lead to 17-13.

The Lions responded with a field goal of their own after kicker Matt Prater hit a 56-yarder to make it 20-13. Green Bay, for yet another drive, didn’t do themselves any favors, going three and out and giving the ball right back to Detroit. The Lions began to gain some momentum on offense when the Packers finally got the defensive turnover they desperately needed. Linebacker Blake Martinez picked it off for Green Bay and from there the Packers took control. After the interception, the Lions even gifted the Packers more yards after Danny Amendola got flagged for unnecessary roughness after the play.

Adams and Rodgers connected on 4th and 1 to give the Packers a much-needed boost and first down and then it was Allen. Freaking. Lazard who came up huge again for Green Bay at the end of the drive. The youngster leapt into the endzone for a 28-yard touchdown to tie the game at 20 with just about four minutes left to play.

Yet another week, Za’Darius Smith came up huge when the Packers needed him to. He put on the pressure on third down and the Lions were forced to punt with 3:34 left. It looked like it was going to be a real chance for Green Bay to end the game, but then Rodgers, who struggled all day to connect on the deep ball, threw an interception.

Luckily, Mike Pettine and crew held their ground, forcing a huge three-and-out and putting the ball back in the Packers’ hands with 1:26 left on the clock.

It was enough. The Packers marched their way down the field into Lion’s territory and it was kicker Mason Crosby who was the hero for Green Bay. Just a year ago, Crosby had the worst game of his career at Ford Field after missing four field goals and an extra point. On Sunday, he hit a 33-yarder to win the game 23-20 for Green Bay and earn them a first-round bye in the playoffs. Talk about redemption.

With another ugly win, Aaron Jones hitting the 1,000-yard rush mark and a first-round bye in the playoffs, there was plenty to take away from Sunday’s win.

What we learned: Winning ugly is this team’s mantra

If you didn’t believe it before, surely you believe it now. The 2019 Green Bay Packers have certainly mastered one thing: winning ugly

The Packers had no business winning that game. Rodgers struggled for 3/4 quarters of this game and his receivers didn’t help him much either. It was just tough to watch. Players being overthrown, guys dropping passes left and right and complete and utter miscommunications. It was ugly, but they still found a way to get it done like a great team does.

I will gladly take ugly wins, trust me, but I need the Packers to relax with this because I think these games are really starting to take years off my life. No, seriously.

What went right: Short, quick passes

The Packers struggled a lot on offense Sunday, but they were able to find success with short and quick passes. Green Bay nearly dismantled Minnesota running quick plays and getting Kumerow, Lazard and of course Adams involved in the receiving game last, so it baffled me why they took a step away from that formula.

However, when they did play quicker Sunday, the offense began to click. Too many times Rodgers went deep and there just was no chance at connecting with a receiver. Take the short pass pickups, utilize your star running back and THEN look downfield for the deep ball. It’s only been good news for Green Bay when they’ve been able to do this.

What went wrong: Rodgers’ accuracy

I hate picking on 12, but Sunday’s performance was so uncharacteristic of him it was hard not to.  The final stat line won’t show it after a redeeming 4th quarter, but Rodgers’ accuracy was surely off Sunday. At one point in the first half he was 2/11, which according to the broadcast, was his worst performance since the 2018 season opener against Chicago.

The first-round bye is going to be crucial for Rodgers to roll the tape and see what he needs to correct. If he can tweak the mistakes he made, this team can be something special in the post-season

Offensive Standouts: Aaron Jones and Davante Adams (again)

I feel as though I am starting to get repetitive with my standouts, but great performances can’t be ignored. WR1 and RB1 did what they needed to do for Green Bay to escape with a win and first-round bye.

Jones hit the 1,000-yard rush mark for the first time in his career Sunday and it was the first time a Packer had done that since Eddie Lacy in 2014.

Despite briefly leaving the game with an injury, he still finished the day with an impressive 25 carries for 100 yards and 2 receptions for 43 yards (ESPN stats).

Adams finished the day with 7 receptions for 93 yards and touchdown (ESPN stats). Despite missing multiple games with injury, he is still nearing the 1,000-yard mark this season.

Defensive Standout: Za’Darius Smith (again)

He’s just the man. Za’Darius came to play another week and the Packers won the game because of some crucial stops he was able to make. He is the real deal and I sit here and write, yet another week, about how thankful I am he carries that G.

Smith finished the day with only 1 tackle but had 2 QB hits and a handful of pass pressures that forced the Lions into a panic.

Up next, the Packers get a week off after earning a first-round bye in the playoffs. Now, we all cheer for the Seahawks!

How this team went 13-3 and 6-0 in the NFC North I have no idea. I guess it's the football payback for all of the lousy luck in the McCarthy playoffs.

Martinez was player of the game....wow what a game and I loved how Pettine used him on a few blitzes. His plowing over the RB and then getting the sack was as awesome as his INT.

Martinez redeemed himself in the second half with some stellar play. The problem paying him big bucks is he has too many games like the first half where they can't stop a pee wee team from running because Blake is out of position trying to make a play. He loses gap control too often due to mental mistakes. We all see what he and the run defense can do when he doesn't make those mistakes and maintains his gap.

Glad to see that you have balls, er, I mean guts to pick on Rodgers' play. Overthrowing receivers, throwing behind them, throwing too far out of bounds has been Rodgers' year. And that's when he's not fumbling the ball, allowing the play clock run out because he can't take a snap with more than 0 seconds on the clock. Had the Packers lost today, it would have been solely the fault of Rodgers. Yes, a Graham drop, a missed (but very long) field goal attempt, and athletic defensive backs with no brains did't help, but it would still have been entirely Rodgers and his ego. If he would give up on the 40 yard double teamed passes and pick up the 8 yards for a new first down, the Packers would have had an easy or better win. No Sarah, you were not picking on Rodgers, he earned every bit of it.

Who are the real Packers? The team that went into MN last week with a chip on their shoulders and destroyed the Vikings on both sides of the ball in the Vikings house, or are they the Packers who came to MI and stumbled around absently for the better part of the game? Might they be a cross of those two weeks of play?

I dont know but in 2 weeks we are about to find out!

As a side note I see an early 2020 mock draft has WR Justin Jefferson of LSU being the Packers first round selection.

Way too early but sure wish ESB wasnt shut down so early for the year. ESB and Lazard would really compliment Adam's helping Rodgers out.

Rodgers struggled for 3/4 quarters of this game and his receivers didn’t help him much either. What game were you watching. Rodgers missed receivers that were wide open by 5 yards, under threw a ton of open receivers, over threw a bunch of receivers. He did his receivers no favors not the other way around. But I know the last few games has been the same thing, All is good if you win but Rodgers hasn't been near to what they claim he has been. Go Pack Go. Hopefully #1 seed.

Best tip i got when I picked up the bass: Invest in strings.

I was playing my bass for months trying to figure out why I couldn't get the sound out of it I was looking for. It turns out, you absolutely must have strings on the damned thing before it will make so much as a peep.

Rodgers was bad, there's no denying that. But MLF continuing to trot out MVS, Allison and Graham is almost as much to blame. A coach has to be able to see that players are bad, especially after an entire season of futility. Lombardi would have benched them, cut them or traded them weeks ago. Play Lazard, Kumero, bring up Grant, use Ervin, try the rookie TE, anything but having to watch those three play another snap.

Lombardi would have benched AR. Its not the receivers fault. they are wide open most of the time just like last year and the year before. MVS is way better than he gets credit for. A average QB would help

That's just wrong. MVS, Allison and Graham rarely get any separation. For all his vaunted speed whenever Rodgers does throw to MVS there's a CB right on his hip. Allison has no moves. Graham changing direction is likely trying to turn a destroyer. Rodgers was bad. But somehow Lazard and Adams seem to make catches and have all year. Allison and MVS are at the very bottom of receivers with over 50 targets.

Really?! Your degrading the coach who just managed a team to 13-3! Maybe, just maybe he knows what he is doing, give credit where it’s due. I’m sure he has his reasoning that has logic and thorough thought. The man should be coach of the year, not chastised.

Rebuilt collarbone. Never been the same since. And now he's older.
And a diva who never takes the blame. The passes he missed yesterday, you never see Brees misfire like that. If the 2009-2016 Rodgers doesn't return in January, we'll definitely be 1 & done like in 2009, 2011, and the time we lost to Kaepernick (not the year we were able to defeat Joe Webb's Vikings).

Sorry, I'm sure MLF deserves some credit for what seems to be the team atmosphere, not many first year coaches are handed a team with this defense, a pretty good pair of RB's and a capable qb (sorry, that seems to be all AR is at the moment).

I think we will see MLF true coaching skills in the playoffs. Can he control/stop AR or not?

First off--damn glad to be 13-3 and getting a break next week to get Bulaga, Linsley, and AJones healthy. Sure as hell beats 7-9 and 5-10-1.

Secondly--this is a team that has problems and has punched above its weight all year. While people poke at the coaching staff for this player being on the field or that play call, we should give them credit for finding ways to overcome the team's issues to the tune of those 13 wins.

Thirdly--this is a wide-open playoff field. Punch your ticket and see what happens.

I've been slammed a bit over this season for calling out AR as no longer elite. But taking a look at the reactions on the "Gut Reactions' post, it seems like many agree now. Even Nagler has come around to laying a lot of blame on AR.

I wasn't able to watch much of the game due to a family party but what I did see was much of the same. Overthrowing, underthrowing, throwing behind. But unless AR was completely disobeying MLF, I'm thinking the MLF gave AR one more game before playoffs to see if he could still play elite. Well he got his answer - a resounding NO! So now MLF's path is clear for the playoffs. The handcuffs are on AR and that's it. If it's not the case, and this was all AR's improve, then I think MLF has a serious conversation with Gute about the plan to move beyond AR. AR is playing like an avg qb. But we might have to suffer with him until his contract is up as I don't think they would have the guts to trade him or bench him.

Anyways, this has been just a crazy year. At 13-3 but coming out just 'dead' for 3 games. Fortunately, the Lions are bad enough that they were able to claw their way to a win. One day, I'm going to be really interested in reading a book by MLF on what really happened his first year in GB.

If AR doesn't play the long ball and can stop throwing behind his receivers, it seems like we could win it all. But is anyone confident in anything coming from this team? Sometimes you could lose and still make you fans proud of you. This is not that team.

If I had to bet, it looks like the road is vs. NO, @ SF and against BAL in miami.

That's going to be tough.

Can't find my initial 5pm question - can someone confirm if or if not Crosby's winning kick hit the left upright?

I couldn't tell. I didn't notice a deflection though it was too close for comfort.

Mason's been great all year - kicking it straight and end-over-end all year until the last few games I've noticed it hooking more.

josefk,

when you are looking for posts by a specific poster, the best way I've found to do it is listed below. It's clunky and not ideal, but it works:

1) find any message that has a reply to it

2) click on "Show All" next to the number of replies indicator. This opens up and shows all messages in the thread. If you don't do this, you won't see all messages in the thread.

3) Now do perform a [ctrl-f] find function for the poster's name you are looking for, or search for wording you're looking for. Now you can continue to move to the 'next' instance of the search term until you find what you are looking for, or confirm it is not in the article at all. I guess if you are using a phone to browse, you'll have to figure out how your particular phone or browser handles "find" commands as opposed to [ctrl-f].

Side note: If you want to figure out what topic a message might be posted under, you can look at user information by clicking on a poster's name (including your own). This will bring up that users' information, including a list of links to recent posts. The downside of the recent posts links is that it will not take you directly to the specific post, but it will bring you into the article/thread where they posted; from there you can do the procedure I listed above.

I thought the same thing, but I saw another shot of the winning FG recently and it might have just "ticked" by. Damn close even if it didn't hit the upright.

1st half: “ what the hell is going on out there?”
2nd half: “ let’s get the hell outta here”

Packers Home Playoff Losses in the 2000's

Atlanta (Vick)
Minnesota (Culpepper)
NY 2008 (Eli)
NY 2012 (Eli)
SF 2014 (Racistnick)

The home playoff losses are alarming & we were favored in all 5 games, 4 of them by a TD or more.
That's 2 dome teams & a California team plus 2 Eli-led underdog Giants. The "oh it's too cold for those dome teams or southern teams" takes are pure hogwash.

Luckily, Brees has had some struggles outdoors in cold weather so we have a puncher's chance. But not with the Rodgers that we've seen too much of this & last year.

The common theme there though is that three of those were QBs (Vick, Culpepper, Kaep) who could run, and then Eli who was at his best in the Playoffs in cold weather.

Brees isn't that. He's the better passer but his arm strength isn't what it was and he's never been super successful outdoors in the winter.
