Former Packers general manager Ted Thompson dies at 68

The former NFL linebacker was the archictect of the Packers 2010 Super Bowl championship team.

Absolutely gutted by the news that Ted Thompson passed away last night.

Packers fans are lucky to have had Ted as the GM of their favorite team.

From everyone here at CheeseheadTV, we offer our deepest condolences to his family.

RIP, one of the Packer greats. A tragedy at such a young age. He revealed that he did have a central nervous disorder.

Rest in Peace Ted.

Thanks for everything you did for the Packers. I'll know you'll be looking down as the guys you drafted win it all this season.

RIP!

Thompson turned around the Packers to build the Packers to what we have known for the last 15 years.

Thompson still has a big impact with this current team. Rodgers, Adams, Bakhtiari, Linsley, Clark, Lowry, Crosby, Kevin King, Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams. All came from Thompson drafting them. Tramon Williams who is resigning with the team was brought in from Ted also.

My condolences to his family and friends!

That was a short fall, time wise, from being the GM to the grave.

He got the team into the Championship game 4 times in 10 years, he drafted Aaron Rodgers and transitioned the organization from Favre to Rodgers. He mentored Gutekunst. He’s put his mark on the Packers. RIP, Ted Thompson.

Very sad to hear this. Obvious he wasn’t doing well but damn, far too early. His work brought the Packers Aaron Rodgers and the Super Bowl. Thank you. Rest In Peace, Ted.

It seems tragedy follows the Packers before the NFCCG......Joe Philbin's son was tragically lost before the 2012 game and now Ted...

There should be commemorative patches on the jerseys; if there's time? Or maybe a helmet decal.

Agree, there should definitely be recognition this weekend.

Should be easy to put on a decal or patch.

Packers have announced that his name will be placed in the Ring of Honor; I would be shocked if there's no patch or decal on their uniforms. If there were time, I'd advocate for the middle stripe on the left sleeve be black, not white, as well.

He took a lot of heat during the Favre circus, but never retaliated.

Fixed a horrible inherited salary-cap situation when he arrived.

Drafted a future Hall-of-Fame QB that ensured a competitive team for the next 15 years plus.

Won a SB as GM in short-order

Never bitched or complained publicly about his players.

Quiet gentleman.

Despite noticeable health concerns that might have made it tough for him to do his job near the end of his stint consider this, of the four GB Packer First Team AllPros this year, all were drafted by Thompson (Arod, Bakh, Lindsley, Adams).

I have nothing but gratitude for what he did for the Pack. RIP

Thank you, Ted, for everything you did for the Pack. Quiet class. Never took the bait to air any laundry. Balls of steel during the Favre saga. Rest in peace.

Absolutely, replacing Favre was not an easy period , but he handled it with extreme courage, determination, and leadership. We have been extremely fortunate, 2 great GMs, Coaches, and QBs. It seems that we are on our way to an addition to that run.

Ted Thompson was never there to pat himself on the back and was a true gentleman. I read an article that listed many of the super performers on the Green Bay Packers and it seems Mr. Thompson never got enough credit for acquiring super performers like Rodgers, Adams, B.J. Raji, and a host of other players. RIP

Class Act is what he was. I as very fortunate in 2016, Ted gave his private box for the Veterans Day game against the Colt's to 12 Wisconsin Veterans and myself and son both USMC combat veterans (Vietnam - Cosovo) got invited. Both Ted and Packer President Mark Murphy stopped in to ensure our experience was top shelf several times during the game. Why such positive things like this are not made public is puzzling.

This man took a lot of heat from a lot of fans, but the Packers organization owes him a debt of gratitude for keeping them competitive year after year after year. He didn't get every decision right, but damn he hit an awful lot of home runs. R.I.P. Ted. Godspeed.

I was really hard on Thompson, especially in the later years BUT I always have said, he was really the best at what he did up through the 2014 or 2015 season. Just look at the 2010 team with UDFA like Shields and Tramon Williams starting and playing great football and that's just a smidge of the talent he found.

With that said I gave him the blues for several years after but I soften up on the criticism when I heard a press conference of his near the end of his tenure as GM. He didn't look good, sounded worse, and it became obvious that Ted wasn't healthy or well. Not even close.

RIP Ted Thompson. I thank you for what you did for the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. You groomed and prepared some of the better GM's in the NFL including our own Brian Gutekunst and several others. Thank you Ted, you'll always be loved in Packers Nation and definitely missed.

Ted was incredibly humble and brought the Packers to a SB and multiple NFC division championships. What I will always remember him for is his love for the undrafted players (I believe he was one himself) and, in an unusual unguarded moment, saying that he was rooting for those players to make his roster. A class act and a sad loss way too soon. R.I.P. Ted.

Is there anyone else who scouted one HOF QB, then had the guts to move on from them because they picked a second HOF QB? Maybe if one guy was involved with the Montana and Young decisions in San Fran. Other than that, I doubt it.

Who knows whether he was just being humble or what, but TT said that he only watched some film and just went along with what Ron Wolf wanted -- and Ron Wolf really wanted Favre. He seemed to imply that he wouldn't have traded for Favre, but that he didn't want to argue with his boss.

I give TT more credit from learning from the whole Favre saga, so when a talented QB fell in the 2005 draft, he pulled the trigger instead of following the herd. What's more, unlike Ken Herock & Jerry Glanville, the Falcons GM, TT had the patience to stick with Rodgers those first few years.

RIP Ted. You sucked as a GM and drafted like crap. If I was in heaven I would tell you you sucked as a GM. KIng? Savage? Why not move down in the draft and get a 6'1 mean ass tackler who can cover like Smith of the Vikings who may have missed all of three games in his entire carerr and never misses a tackle.
