Devin Lloyd NFL Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report

NFL Prospect Profile: Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah

Name: Devin Lloyd

School: University of Utah

Year: rJr

Position: Linebacker

Measurables: 6’3”, 235 lbs.

Stats:

General Info:

Devin Lloyd grew up in Chula Vista, California and attended Otay Ranch High School. There, he played both sides of the ball at the wide receiver and safety positions. Devin also punted for his high school team and lettered two seasons in basketball. Lloyd verbally committed to UNLV in December of 2016 before decommitting in January of 2017 and signing with the Utah Utes the following month. While he was recruited as a safety, Devin Lloyd quickly transitioned to the linebacker position upon his arrival on campus. After being a special teams player in 2018, he was a starting linebacker in each of Utah’s games over the last three seasons. Along with multiple selections to the Pac-12 All-Conference team, Lloyd was selected as a first-team All-American for his senior season.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Lloyd’s history as a wide receiver and defensive back is evident in his ball-hawking skills; this has earned him a reputation as a “big-play guy”. He had four interceptions in his senior season, two of which he returned for a touchdown. Lloyd played aggressive football while avoiding major injury in his college career. He is a great blitzer, which helps him in the run game as well as in pass-rushing. This contributed to his 16.5 sacks and 43 tackles for loss throughout his career at Utah. Rarely does a linebacker pair high-level pass coverage with an ability to stop the run and rush the passer. This unique skill set will allow Devin Lloyd to play multiple linebacker positions in the NFL.

Weaknesses

Devin Lloyd is not a fluid runner, which could hurt him in pass coverage. He was overtaken frequently by larger offensive linemen in the run game as well. At times, Lloyd is a step behind in diagnosing plays and arrives late to the football. He is known to stop his feet on contact instead of driving his feet through tackles; this could hurt him against larger NFL running backs.

Fit with the Packers:

Green Bay’s hole at linebacker was seemingly solved with the arrival of De’Vondre Campbell in 2021. After all, the Packers defense is notorious for using only one linebacker and relying on a third safety. However, linebacker Krys Barnes played roughly half of Green Bay’s defensive snaps in 2021. His play left some to be desired, and he lacks the coverage ability to complement De’Vondre Campbell. Linebacker is an under-the-radar need for the Packers approaching the 2022 season. While he possesses the ability to play multiple linebacker positions, Green Bay would likely play Lloyd as an off-ball linebacker to pair his coverage abilities with Campbell’s physical presence as a run-stuffer. This would take weight off of De’Vondre Campbell’s shoulders, allowing him to home in on his strengths rather than be a “Jack of all trades” for Green Bay’s defense. Lloyd would learn under a first-team All-Pro linebacker and be utilized by a creative defensive coordinator. Devin Lloyd has drawn comparisons to 49ers’ linebacker Fred Warner due to his coverage abilities. Should he live up to this hype, Devin Lloyd would certainly be worthy of the Packers’ first-round selection.

Think he and De'Vondre would be an awesome pair. I wanted him even before I watched the NFL 360 episode on him... If he's there at 22 I take him every time. Hope Gutey does.

Nope not buying it. Slow feet and stiff. I want the fastest guy. Better hitter. Ray Nitschke type.

Are those synonymous? Hard to find those guys!

Give me a true stud DL like Wyatt, Jordan, or Jones along with a very good bend Edge rusher say in the first 3 picks combined with an upgraded Star CB/S and I can live with Barnes. The Packer needs are great and IMO the Packers focus will be elsewhere in the early part of the draft. Just my opinion but that is why the draft is so unpredictable and fun.

Knock, this is such a GREAT point,

We need to add NT and DT. It’s WAY past time we surround Kenny Clark with top talents to help our entire defense. We’ve been run on ENDLESSLY- FOR YEARS.

What’s the one common denominator? We haven’t added top DL players in the draft since Clark. They make your LBs better. They make your DBs better. Imagine. Addressing this problem early, and completely, with 2 picks? Wow. That would be an immense boost to this Packers team’s chances to finally get to and win another Super Bowl.

5 drafts without a top pick on our DL. Time to put an end to that. Add TWO within our first 4 selections, and we could become a Top 5 defense.

If Wyatt drops to our 22, or Davis, I run up with that card.

If we by some chance could add Devonte Wyatt 22 and Trevor Jones 28? Wow. It would mark a new era in Green Bay. 100%.

Given the Packers' track record of not throwing draft capital at ILB early, I don't see them throwing #22 at him if he's there, especially given the contract Campbell just signed.

Schematically, they tend to value S over that second ILB in longer down-distance situations limiting their use of 2 ILB sets, so I'd argue that pushes this kind of pick even further down the list.. Maybe that's because they've struggled to get one--much less two--ILB that they trust enough to play regularly on passing downs.

Adding a guy like Lloyd would fundamentally shift how this defense plays. They either need an upgrade in their third S or a second ILB who makes that player less of a priority. With the futures of Savage and Amos in question, I think the Packers go S instead of ILB.

Maybe they'll wait and Troy Anderson will fall into Gutey's lap. (I wouldn't mind that either.)

I like Troy as well, but the splash plays Devin makes is second to none. As Dobber said thou, I doubt the Packers would go that way in round 1. Maybe Troy in round 3?

The best thing about drafting Devin is the ability to move him around. He could be wicked on 3rd downs. Great kid too.

Yes - Troy in round 3 would awesome. If he were to slip to the 4th round, even better. Some of these guys are going to slide down boards because of other teams needs and Troy might be one of them. 4th round I think he'd be an absolute steal.

I am getting wayyy to into this. I found a sheet of paper listing various Strengths/ Weaknesses on the nightstand. On the very bottom (just before shut-eye), I started listing Sweet Pea's S/W as a lover.

She must have found the list and had another paper on the kitchen table with my Ws (no S listed)....got docked for my measurables?

Whatever.....nothing gonna break my stride today...nothing! Is it 7:00pm CDT yet?

My dream draft ( give up 5 picks to move up for these players): Jordan Davis, Burks or Dotson, Ojabu, Watson, best T and S. Dreaming is free. LOL

That is a good list!

For everyone out there at the end of the day try forgetting all the media hype about Jordan Davis and his 40 time. He dramatically under-performed throughout his collegiate career and Wyatt was more productive. This is meant as a serious question:

Who is actually a better DL is it Jordan Davis, or is it Travis Jones from Conn? Which would allow for more value during the draft? Jordan shows he is consistently gone around #16 - 20, while Travis appears to consistently be available until somewhere early to mid-round in the 2nd.

Is there one who clearly is better than the other? I'd prefer Wyatt at #22, or #28 as I truly believe the Packer defense would be significantly better with him and Clark putting inside pressure up the middle with Preston and Gary on outside. Let's say Wyatt isn't available or the Packers pass on Wyatt. However, if Jones is available in round 2 I'd prefer to take other quality big men at Edge, and OT, and/or take a WR in round 1. Then try maneuvering upwards for Jones as my DL guy in round 2.

Your thoughts?

Will be estactic if we select quay walker or devin llyod in the first round. Two sideline to sideline linebackers who can cover stop the run and tackle for loss. Pair either with cambell. Add another dlineman and the packers defense is elite . This is smart drafting .

Why waste valuable draft capitol on a wr who rodgers won't utilize and bitch about that is bad business. Get a wr Luke pierce and another later in the draft. Will have the same success with rodgers chap ass as any first round wr.

Get another cheap veteran who chap ass rodgers will throw to and let the defense carry you. Gutey trust you see this and won't waste resources on a high pick for a wide out for your chap ass mvp

Jack writes Lloyd is a step behind in diagnosing plays and arrives late to the ball.

Draft Buzz: "He’s a super-smart, instinctive player whose game intelligence is the best on the field - a real quick thinker."

Everything I have read is Lloyd is incredibly quick diagnosing plays and gets to the ball in a flash.

Yeah, I'm with you LP. Jack showing his bias, because Lloyd would be wicked in our defense with Campbell.

Hoping Dallas trades up to 22 to take Burks and we get Lloyd at 24. That would be wicked good value and we add a pick for moving two spots.
