Cory's Corner: Packers Should've Cleaned House Last Year

Now Mike McCarthy is in a quagmire as he stresses about his job for 2019. His players know that if the Packers don’t get back on track he is likely gone.

Thanks to a 7-9 record last year, the Packers opted for some changes this year.

They added defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.

But was that enough?

They brought back head coach Mike McCarthy on a one-year deal. Now McCarthy is in a quagmire as he stresses about his job for 2019. His players know that if the Packers don’t get back on track he is likely gone.

I realize that McCarthy was 121-70-1 entering this season. He has a Super Bowl title under his belt in addition to three NFC Championship Game losses. He has done a remarkable job as the Packers coach for 12 seasons.

If the Packers really wanted to hit the reset button, wouldn’t it have made sense to make a complete break and get a new head coach as well?

Remember when McCarthy said he was going to take a “scrub-brush approach” to this team? Not much has changed. The routes are still the same and the discord with Aaron Rodgers remains no matter how flowery each person has made their relationship out to be.

Since the Packers move at such a glacial pace, there’s no way that McCarthy gets fired before the season is over. He will be given every chance to get this train back on track but I’m not sure what else can be done. Sure, the execution can be cleaned up, but Rodgers is also making poor decisions for a healthy quarterback let alone a hobbled one.

No, the issue with the Packers is philosophical. With Rodgers injured, the Packers should change the entire offense. Go to a quick-strike, no-huddle offense that allows the Packers to keep Rodgers upright while moving the chains. That’s what the Patriots use most of the time and it has worked out pretty well. The only problem with this is how many times will Rodgers elect to uncork a 34-yard pass attempt over taking the easy six-yard completion to move the chains?

Another philosophical problem is Aaron Jones. There has been plenty written and said about Jones’ lack of participation. I’m not saying that Jamaal Williams shouldn’t be playing, but Jones should be getting the majority of the snaps. Jones is averaging 3.29 yards after contact according to Pro Football Focus, which is 17thin the NFL. Jones is arguably the most electric player on the team, yet McCarthy hasn’t been able to see it. And don’t give me the pass protection argument. You play your best players.

And the final philosophical problem is Ty Montgomery. The Packers have looked confused as to how to use him this year. Put him back in the slot and allow him to return to his former position. It will also be a win-win for the running game because he is a solid blocker and should easily win his one-on-one matchups in the secondary. With Randall Cobb’s health being a question in addition to Geronimo Allison, Montgomery would be a welcome asset to the receiving corps.

There are execution issues on offense. Some players don’t look like they are giving complete effort as the Packers are tied for the league lead with 11 drops.

But the main issue is philosophical. McCarthy’s message has gotten old. The Packers had the chance to start over completely, but they dragged their feet. Now the players will be forced to live through two straight years of change.

That isn’t the best recipe for a quarterback that turns 35 in a couple months.

I dont know if Montgomery would be a welcome asset to the receiving corps. We have enough and better (taller, faster, way higher ceiling) guys there. Its a crowded WR group and we have only so much balls to get around and keep all (plus the TEs)involved.

I see the deep at the RB group much more as a need and would say that he is just a the right spot. Sure he can be used there differently, but its not a problem of the position at all.

other than that, I have know idea why we have to be so ultra careful with AR, regarding the HC (and everything else). He is man and he should be able to handle what ever life (the Packers/opponents) is throwing at him. If they had changed all the coaches this off season, all would have said that is a too complicated transition for AR. In the end nobody knows one way or another (or even a whole other, witch nobody had thought about), no matter what they say.

I have been a pretty big MM proponent over the years, but there have been enough silly mistakes made across the team this year that it is quite possible The Packers have been "Andy Reided" like the Eagles were by 2012. That's what this season is there to figure out.

As Corey stated, they must get to the playoffs or MM is gone. I don't think it was such a bad thing that MM hasn't been fired. Yet.

The West Coast Offense hasn't changed. What has changed is Arron Rodgers. The team is built around him. It's always been on Arron Rodgers. Well tell A-Rod to put a sock in it. The Packers knew the problem was defense. They drafted defensive busts. TT , should have , would have, could have. There was No where to go but up. The elevator became stuck. And now it's become jammed by not playing what you drafted. The packers need to play Jones, StBrown and MVS. The downfield threats will open the short gain for more YAC. When you throw 6 yards you jam your team up. The field is shrinking with A-Rods arm. The TEs are a failure. The RBs are the strength of this team now. Throw to them. See any shuttle Passes? Let them run. Allison acts like a TE, not Wr. Adams should play the slot. Leave the speed outside! I'm all for short game offense, but A-rod needs faster people outside. Jennings is right.

The fact that McCarthy didn't have his most explosive RB on the field the entire 2nd half last Sunday except for the last 40 seconds was confusing. But McCarthy, the self proclaimed "Highly Successful Head Coach" can't figure out a way to have Montgomery AND Aaron Jones on the field at the same time is driving me bat sh## nuts!

To confirm my feelings of craziness I listened to a couple of different podcasts on ESPN Milwaukee yesterday on my way home from work. Both Mark Tauscher and Mark Chmura are asking themselves the EXACT same 2 questions.

These are just 2 questions in a ever growing list of why McCarthy needs to go. We've spent the last 7 plus seasons trying to get back to the SB and this 2018 team seems further away than any of the previous 7. With the OBVIOUS discord between McCarthy and Rodgers who by the way is still pretty much the only reason the Packers receive ANY SB hype, why keep him around and waste anymore of the precious time we have left with Rodgers in Green Bay?

Again as I mentioned before...Thanks Mike McCarthy, we HAVE appreciated you here in GB. As for me I no longer appreciate you or trust you as the Packers HC.

It is not that dire of a situation yet. The offense has to get into a rhythm, MM has got to use better the mismatches that he has, like Jones and Montgomery. And don't try to be balanced between runs and passes and don't try long developing plays so Rodgers gets sacked. Rather get the short passes and mismatches going to get the offense in rhythm and then go after balance and such. Offensive rhythm is the most important task MM has.

I agree 100 percent about cleaning house. They hung too long with Dom Capers.. They bring back Philbin who is a problem, Pettine is not doing and better and McCarthy should have gone last year. They need to let him go at the end of year, whether they make the playoffs or not.. They brought Tramon Williams back this year and Davon House last year for what, both have been burned last year and this year. Kevin King looks promising, but always hurt, Haha is way overated, just like Morgan Burnett last year. They let go Micah Hyde and Casey Hayward years ago, guess what they both have been Pro Bowlers. They relied on Ted Thompson too long and why we did not promote Eliot Wolf and let him go is crazy. Mark Murphy needs to be looked at as well. Martellis Bennett was a bust last year and looks like Jimmy Graham is not the same player he was. I am a die-hard Packet fan since 1962 and will always be, but clean house Is what they need. They could have grabbed TJ Watt last and didn't, they get Wilkerson who got hurt this year, they should have traded for Mack this year, Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman or JPP, that ended up in Tampa. Clean House Pack!!!!

So Pettine's not doing any better than Capers huh? Defense ranked 4th overall, 4th in sacks, 7th in ints, 2nd in passing, 16th in run defense, 9th in 3rd down pct. Do you even watch football? Get a clue dude. And this is with a new coach still learning his players while his players are still learning his system and getting used to it. I can't remember a time since 2010 a Capers defense could get off the field on key third downs. Almost every year since 2011 Capers pass defense would rank dead last or be at least one of the worst 4 in the league. But it all looks the same to you huh? lol

Exactly right. Just look what Detroit did in the red zone. They were very poor trying to score there prior to playing against Green Bay. Then they were perfect with scoring TDs each time in the red zone versus the Packers D.

What a difference it was shutting down the rookie Buffalo QB and then going up against a veteran QB in Stafford, who was able to make quicker decisions finding receivers in stride. Stats can be very misleading early in a season based on the teams one plays. Packers’ D is still very suspect in stopping good QBs from being effective in scoring when needed.

McCarthy isn't going anywhere as long as Murphy is in charge. He took away the authority to hire & fire the HC from the GM position just so he could keep McCarthy here.

Unfortunately, Murphy will wait 2-3 years too long to replace McCarthy the same way he waited 2-3 years too long to replace Thompson. In the meantime, the defense will improve but don't expect anything else to change with the offense. Instead of bringing in a younger OC with new and fresh ideas, McCarthy brought his old crony Philbin to make sure that wouldn't happen.

Teaching an old dog new ticks never works. Seniority has it's place. Gute is new and Learning. His drafts may still fail. The problem was the OL. And nothing was done about it. Faith in Coaching Sir! The same is said for why we still believe A-Rod gives us are best chance. MM is a good coach. They promote within. They believe the press is a shit hole. It waste more paper to advertise then print the facts. TT and MM had nothing to say always. Fact; Was this team built around Arron Rodgers? Was the defense not built around the 3-4-4? Was TTs draft and development , done To show a profit. Didn't MM say he hated free Agency? Didn't MM have to many players getting injured? The Point: Murphy is taking a wait and see approach. (With GUTE!). MM's staff is made up of EX- Coaches! ON paper, won't get you wins. (Play must. ) The players aren't up to the task because; frankly they believe what they read now. And their Hot shot player is in Love with a guaranteed contract! Problem #1 is A-Rod. Problem#2 see problem #1.

Ok why do even think or make the case to think that the 2018 draft may fail? Why are we even considering it, we have six drafts where we show little to no players that contribute to the team today, since the sb. When people talk about wasting the problem #1 career, well look no further. Sorry everyone in the FO to coaches owns that. Wonder why he wanted so much guaranteed money?

If we are going to clean house, then we need to start with the head of the snake...Mark Murphy. Let's face it, this is all happening under his watch, and it started with the performance of Ted Thompson and the poor decisions he has made. Just think if we still had Micah Hyde and Casey Hayword these last 3 years. His singular model of draft and develop is well chronicled as a failure. We have been a draft and develop to seed other teams. We are still recovering from a lack of talent and depth from his era.

Again, this is all on Mark Murphy for being an absentee CEO. It is also well chronicled that he has spent most of his time getting title town off the ground.

So the slowness of decision making starts at the top...the very top. You need to change culture, that is where you start.

McCarthy and Rodgers should be locked in a room with a case of Doritos and a bottle of single malt and be made to watch the 2nd half of the Bears game a hundred times on loop until they promise that that's the offensive scheme from now on.

McCarthy also needs to write "Aaron Jones is RB1" on a chalkboard a thousand times or he doesn't get dessert.

With McCarthy looking more and more like Andy Reid with each passing season taking his dessert just might be the way to get him to see the light and play Jones.

But what could we threaten him with if he doesn't get Monty and Jones on the field at the same time?

The Packers have had some problems this year, but nothing that can't be fixed (this season). The biggest problem so far has been the poor play of Rodgers and/or his injury.

Rodgers just needs to play better and hopefully they can make playoffs. If they make the playoffs, anything can happen.

The Packers have the talent to win a SB this year.

In 2010, the Packers were 3-3 after six games.

Completely agree. The defense has looked much better this year, and should only improve as the year goes on (as long as health isn't an issue). If 12 can play smart and allow his knee to heal, this team has the potential to beat anyone. I can only dream, but it would be nice if McCarthy is holding back all types of creative offensive schemes for the must-win games.

This problem is a long time in the making. You heard McCarthy making a few stray remarks here and there for years hinting at the problems with personnel department. Some of this arises out of the fact that the Packers have been so consistently successful, but the other part of it is a failure to identify and acquire talent with the draft picks they had.

None of which addresses the problem of what MM does with the talent he has been given. Sure, he had his famed "QB school," but that went bust several years ago with the new restrictions on the off-season. How did he adjust? And really, other than one ACR, how many outstanding graduates did he have? What sticks out more to me is that he couldn't manage #4, so #4 was shipped, and now that ARC is of a similar vintage he can't manage ARC either. (Yes, TT took all the blame for that move, but rumors have swirled for years that MM was the biggest proponent for it.) And that doesn't even get to the rest of the positions on the football team.

I don't know if any head coach is going to be able to come in and fix this mess. I'm not sure who is out there who even going to be willing to try. All I know is that ARC has a fat new contract, and that is an anchor when you are trying to take the boat in a new direction. On the bright side though, some fat contracts are expiring, and others are reaching a point of low dead money: CM3 - 13M; Cobb - 10M; Wilkerson - $5M; Daniels - 10.2M (dead 2.4M); Bulaga $7.9M (dead 1.6M); Tramon Williams 6.3M (1.6M dead). If it's time to clean house, then let me suggest that the Packers just bite the bullet and clean house.

Mike McCarthy absolutely "Handled" #4.

MM and Favre butted heads because MM didn't allow Favre to run rampant and roughshod all over the program as Mike Sherman had allowed Favre to do for years.

You may recall that MM was actually lauded for revitalizing Brett Favre's career. He forced him to play within the system again for the most part.

Favre was sent shipping because He tried to make a power play yet again during the offseason, and the Packers decided, Nope.. Not going there again. But on the field? MM handled Favre- at least as well as Holmgren did, that is.

…"Scrub-Brush approach" and "Glacial Pace" are both terms used in Cory's article to describe the state of the Packers.

On one side we have Coach MM--very deliberate, very contemplative, very thoughtful before he changes anything-- which represents the "glacial pace" side of the Pack-- alternatively known as "stubborn" and refusing to EVER change.

AROD on the other hand, may represent the "scrub-brush" state of the Pack--forever opting for home run strike plays (sandlot) versus Bradyesque short gain passing and controlled offense to achieve TD/scores.

If anyone here is a behavioral psychologist and cares to comment...which leader will win this culture battle?

Even if each leader has his plusses and minuses, there is little doubt that lack of alignment will deliver a winning culture and a return to the SB.

I can almost guarantee that MM is gone next year.

MM said they took a scrub brush to the offensive playbook. As usual Corey hears what he wants to hear and picks and chooses how he wants to represent what happened in the Packers 2017 offseason changes. When Rodgers has followed MM's script for the offense it usually resulted in TDs. Look at 2010-2014 the 1st 20 plays were scripted and the Packers almost always scored a TD on their opening possession.

The Packers did a lot more than bring Philbin back and replace Capers with Pettine. Van Pelt is gone, Edgar Bennett is gone. There has been a constant churn on the bottom of the Packer's 53 man roster and PS squad. How is any of that moving slowly? Packer fans are like 5 year olds they're spoiled and impatient.

Part of being a fan is still cheering for the Paclers when they're struggling and hoping things start to click for the offense. ALP kept saying that 2018 was the start of the rebuild and that 2019 could be the Packer's real opportunity. Now that the injuries are piling up the lack of depth is getting exposed. Who's going to play RT Monday? Does anyone feel confident about Bell at RG? I don't. At WR our young guys are still raw. CM3 has been close but looks like a shell of his former self. Perry has been all but invisible.

This team rises and falls withm Rodgers not MM. Blame him all you want but until we see Rodgers play like he normally does instead of how he has it won't matter who the head coach is. Firing everyone rarely works but is almost always the solution for people who don't have any actual solutions to a problem.

If the offense starts to click the way Rodgers thinks it will people will flip the script and say that they always believed in MM. Let's just watch 2018 play out look at what happened and decide then of MM put the Packers in a position to win. I think the scheme was fine against Detroit. Rodgers missed wide open WRs and Crosby missed easy field goals. That's on the players not on the scheme.

I WAS a keep McCarthy advocate until the end of 2017. Am I spoiled? Don't think so as I was around for Lombardi's last two seasons, the lean, QB-deficient years which followed, then Holmgren-Favre and Rodgers-McCarthy. I'm also a shareholder so think I have a right to be critical.

This team lacks leadership but does have management. McCarthy is managing the product put on the field. However, a good leader has to be open to change when required and McCarthy just isn't changing much, if anything. Bringing in Pettine was a good decision, but bringing Philbin back appears questionable at best. McCarthy's loyalty to his assistant coaches (remember Shawn Slocumb.) is well known and is also a well known fault.

Change for the sake of change is a problem for any leader, especially a new leader with little experience. The situation the Packers are headed toward is not change for the sake of change but change because a new environment dictates change is made.

As for scrubbing the playbook, results indicate this didn't happen. If McCarthy, as the leader of this 2018 team, really changed we would see a more productive running game to increase the effectiveness of the passing game, especially after Rodgers' knee injury. Last week, against the Lions' NFL-worst run defense, seemed like a perfect opportunity to implement such a game plan. Here is where McCarthy is failing. He's too stubborn as a self-proclaimed "highly successful NFL head coach," to admit his mistakes.

As for firing everybody, the Packers fired everybody several times in the 1970s, 1980s and into the 1990s with little success. You're right there, but the Packers finally hit on a successful team with Wolf-Holmgren. This might be the time to clean house again because the approach of changing the staff of assistants is meeting with mixed result with more failures in recent years.

I was at the Detroit game and the Packers all but abandoned the run in the second half. That's a normal McCarthy decision. He stubbornly remained true to form. When Bart Starr was the Packers' QB, he'd come out of the locker room as if he was ahead by 20 points in a similar situation. He wouldn't abandon the game plan and start looking for the quick-strike scores McCarthy ALWAYS looks for. This approach started to work but Detroit adjusted and McCarthy didn't.

McCarthy's leadership, or lack thereof, is a major problem here. Unless he turns this around starting Monday night, then into the bye week, I hope he's toast in January 2019.

Read the interview that the guys at PackersNews did with MM a couple weeks ago. He said specifically that he had to scrap a lot of the newer concepts in the playbook once Rodgers got hurt.

That leads me to believe that those concepts involve much more mobility than AR has now. That knee sprain has been the start of a spiral on offense. AR still thinks he can play like he did before it, when he needs to focus on getting the ball out quickly to his receivers in a position where they can make a play after the catch.

This team can be successful if they just follow the play book you outlined ---- as they did in the second have of the first game of the season.

Take your six yards every play and if two of three work move the chains. If passes are dropped (ie Washingon game) it doesn't work and you punt.

2-2-1 with 11 games left, and the fire everyone chants are starting again? Cmon Cory, at least give the team a chance to rebound. As fans we’ve seen this early season movie before and while it’s not fun to start off slow, the packers have proven that a poor September is not a season death sentence.
How about we focus on the positives? Despite injuries, Our defense is ranked 4th! For the first time in forever We have what looks to be the makings of a strong secondary. We just need to offense to turn it around, and you can bet against Rodgers at your own risk. With a bye week to finally let his knee heal a little bit I have a feeling our offense will be ready to go. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the season folks

Haha has 3 picks. Compare Jaire, Josh Jackson, and Kevin King to our secondary last year and tell me we are not improved there.

I liked McCarthy when the HC job was open and he was my second choice with Sean Payton being the first. Both have been successful, but I like Payton's aggressive play calling, especially in their Super Bowl win with that second half on side kick.

In retrospect for the Packers Management team, perhaps Payton would have been the better long term choice.

Payton has one super bowl win and he went 7-9 three years in a row. Don’t think he would have survived that in Green Bay as MM has one super bowl win and one 7-9 season and we as fans want him ousted.

I liked Peyton more too but both have had pretty close to equal success. The biggest difference right now between these 2 teams in the 2016 and 2017 drafts. The Saints absolutely KILLED both drafts. Thompson not so much. Truth be told Thompson killed the Packers in those drafts, at least early results are showing this to be so.

While I totally agree with this comment it should be pointed out the saints were drafting 20 picks ahead of us. Thats a huge difference in talent.

Plus they got incredible luck. Lattimore was considered a Top 10 talent, and Kamara was seen as a potential first rounder. That they fell is incredibly fortunate for the Saints.

I see a team with a defense that is improving and a QB who is holding up the offense.

I don't know if the routes are the same, I'm not a enough of a film junky to try and figure that out. But the grading the pack article this week showed that wr's are open, so the playcalling is not the problem.

As for Jones usage he definitely needs more than 9 touches but being down by 24 pts throws any semblance of a game plan out the window.

This team is good enough to turn around and McCarthy has proven capable of captaining said turn around. But it hinges on Rodgers playing like Rodgers again and getting the dang ball out quick to the open guy.

I cannot believe how many here make it easy to think they never heard the term..." We won't get fooled again."

You've been played the fool for 6 years and counting. Every year,at some point, the screams for change arise and most believe it will happen every year after year, and when it doesn't, you just go back to the blind faith that leaves you wondering and hoping for next season.

The Packers need to win against SF but more importantly is the manner in which they win. The score is of no matter, but the change most want to see or expect needs to be on display to show they can do it and whether they have room for improvement with it over the two weeks before trying it against the Rams.

If the same predictable plan and lack of use of players is seen again @ home vs a team in disarray...demand a refund for the value on the remaining ride this season. You've officially been moved from the 1st class room of make believe and crammed into the luxurious caboose of reality.

This is a reason I jumped all over the points this week. but this change, if it happens, would be worth the loss for me but I still feel right on the SF side here.

Cory, in your expert opinion would you give us who you think is available and would be better than McCarthy.

It’s easy to say get rid of someone but harder to find a better replacement.

So your car runs like $hit, but you keep it because you're afraid of what you might get? --- Coaching changes improve teams every year. --- Why not the Pack?

All this talk about House he's the 5th or 6th string CB on the Packers. Why does everyone want to clean him so badly? Does he really play that dirty?

Cory is right. Unfortunately for the Packers, I see win/loss repetitively for the season. Aron carries the team along even though the Pack has talent despite injuries. When the dust settles, McCarthy time is gone. But can we get a head coach that can get the results the Pack deserves? There is the rub.

The Packers need an offensive HC that can be innovative and get the most out of Rodgers. Let him select his own OC and assistants. They should also retain Pettine but let him pick his own assistants instead of forcing him to use those (Moss, Whitt, etc.) from the previous regime.

The Packers are currently same old, same old- a team that is content to be a just over average team that can make it to the playoffs almost every year. If they want to become a team that is willing to do what is necessary to be a legitimate contender, they need to do more.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening without a change at the top. Murphy is more intent on having a successful Titletown District than he is on the product they put on the football field. Until that changes, we can expect to see more of the same old, same old every year.

" He has done a remarkable job as the Packers coach for 12 seasons."

I absolutely cannot agree with this statement. --- I believe both TT & MM have dragged down GB for years. --- Now Pack Fans are on the verge of losing another HOF QB due to age. --- The hierarchy of GB has just been average for too long.

What are the odds that the Pack somehow find another franchise QB after AR?

Cory Cory Cory....... The Packer front office situation was one of the really big stories going on. You either had to be blind or a Vikings fan not to notice. The Packer beat reporters did a pretty good job explaining what was going on. Jason Wilde did an explainer piece on the overall effect of Mark Murphy's actions. (Shakes head) Here at CHTV we had a number of threads over the months where the front office actions were hashed out. If you want to write about the front office, than go ahead and write about the front office. But do your homework man.

120-70-1 record is fine.

More revealing is MM's record over the last 47 games:

23-23-1. This year's 2-2-1 is emblematic of who MM is now...a .500 coach with a Hall of Fame QB. Without #12, MM would be a below the radar assistant NFL coach or in the college ranks.

Sorry, that simply is pathetic. It took MM 6 years to "realize" Capers was a drag on the team.

Now Gute needs to "realize" MM was the drag all along. I think Gute wants to make the decision...if Milquetoast Murphy will let him go bold, which I doubt.

To me, if your starting QB position needs really no attention for the last 27 years(Favre/Rodgers) all other facets of the team should be so much better. Not having to worry about drafting a qb every year should leave extra resources for everything else. Or maybe it is and Mike has been keep the team down. Seriously, does anyone think he could go to lets say the Jets and bring them a championship??? LMAO!
Lastly, I don't get why they thought they had to be gracious by giving him this year? Remember the Favre situation??? The train should have left the station a few years ago in my opinion.
