Cory's Corner: As The Thumb Turns

This isn't about the offense. This is about the health of a quarterback in his 18th NFL season.

There’s something to be said about toughness.

It shows your teammates that you are putting your own health above the team in order to succeed.

But what if that toughness gets blurred?

“Aaron is one of the toughest guys I’ve ever been around,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur this week. “In terms of just being able to battle through multiple injuries. So that never crossed my mind. It’s more or less the conversation in terms of how he communicates with us, and where he’s at. Certainly, I know he told you guys, he’s played through a lot worse. He’s old-school tough.”

At what point does an injury become a hindrance? That is why LaFleur gets the big bucks. He gets to make that decision, because, let’s face it, the future first ballot Hall of Famer is not going to take a seat and watch.

As I’ve watched Rodgers since that last play against the Giants, he has altered his throwing motion and changed his angle just to appease his injured thumb.

Rodgers has sidestepped his thumb issue all season. And I get it, the moment he would’ve brought up his thumb, many folks would’ve used that as ammo against him.

This whole thing reminds me of the Brett Favre consecutive games streak. How many games was Favre unable to play at a high level because of nagging injuries? It was a lot. And he could’ve sat a game or two and it would’ve done a world of good for his health.

But Rodgers followed Favre. He saw what is expected when you have the G on the side of your helmet. Toughness above all else and anything less must mean that you don’t have a full commitment.

Rodgers isn’t running nearly as often this year, probably because he is concerned about hurting his throwing thumb even more. And that’s the worst place that a football player can be. The last thing you want to do on a football field is play cautious because that’s when injuries happen.

LaFleur continues to bend to Rodgers when it comes to the offense. The head coach lets the quarterback talk sternly to him and allows the quarterback to dress down his receivers in public.

The team’s offense is one thing, but the health of a soon-to-be 39-year-old quarterback is another. If Rodgers doesn’t want to sit and heal his broken thumb, then the coach has to do it.

Obviously, that won’t be received very well, but that’s the role of a head coach. He’s not supposed to be anybody’s friend. He’s supposed to find the formula for success – both now and in the future. Trotting an injured Rodgers out there in the name of toughness isn’t good for anyone – especially a 4-7 team that has limped through the season ranked 26th in average scoring a game.

This isn’t a sit Rodgers and sit Jordan Love debate.

Because, the debate wouldn’t be happening if Rodgers would’ve already sat.

"LaFleur continues to bend to Rodgers when it comes to the offense. The head coach lets the quarterback talk sternly to him and allows the quarterback to dress down his receivers in public."

THIS is one of the things about MLF and Aaron Rodgers that absolutely drives me batshit crazy, ESPECIALLY the dressing down of his receivers. I don't care if it's on a football field or in the office, NOBODY likes to be blasted in front of others like for example the locker room. But doing it from a podium to the media, or your weekly ego-stroke with Pat McAfee...Well that's just fighting material.

LaFleur screwed up the first time he allowed him to talk to him like that. I get the whole "In the heat of battle" thing. But to continually get the faces he makes, the comments coming off the field, LaFleur should have addressed this a long, long, time ago. This is a BIG reason why other players are losing respect for their HC. I mean common, wouldn't you lose respect the man who was supposed to be leading EVERYONE when ONE of the other 52 men on the TEAM continually does this? I wouldn't. I'd lose respect for that person BIG TIME!

" If Rodgers doesn’t want to sit and heal his broken thumb, then the coach has to do it. "

Well shit Cory, if it hasn't happened yet THEN WHEN? When/If...Well when the Packers lose to the Eagles on Sunday Night Aaron Rodgers needs to go to the IR. I don't care if the thumb had a chance to heal somewhat over this little mini-bye they just had.

It's Jordan Love time. Whether it's LaFleur, Gute, the Team Doctor, or the wannabe "Owner" Mark Murphy, Rodgers needs to sit and be a good teammate and Jordan Love needs to play. He needs to play with as much of the first team offense and show what he can do over a EXTENDED period of time.

IT IS TIME!

Well said Nick. I understand LaFleur has had to manage Rodgers' ego and compromise on giving him more leeway than other QBs with changing calls at the line of scrimmage, but getting chewed out in public, the huffing and puffing, etc. is totally unprofessional. Unfortunately I think it's gone on too long now, but will be interesting to see if it reaches a breaking point with MLF.

During the first two seasons as HC or even at the start of this season, I would have thought yes...There IS a breaking point. But now, with the number of these instances growing each week, I honestly have began to wonder if this is even in LaFleur's DNA. I've always believed anyone has a breaking point, but with MLF he's just too damn passive when it comes to Rodgers which has only FUELED Rodgers ego to larger proportions if that's even possible.

It seems to me LaFleur long ago crossed the Rubicon as far positioning to be the head coach with Rodgers is concerned. I don’t think the man has the make up to manage players or coaches. I don’t know how much more evidence people want of that, but he’s shown himself not to be a leader of men. It’s time to move him out.

There are many dichotomies of leadership. Similarly, it's been said that everything in moderation is the key.

When we get pulled too far to one end of the spectrum, bad things happen.

I see a couple of things being taken to the extreme here:

1) With Rodgers, he's taking the toughness to an extreme. I get it, he's a warrior, he watched Favre, etc. But there is a fine line between being tough and being stupid. And refusing to sit when you're clearly injured and not playing at you best does reach a point where it actually not only hurts the player's health, but also the team. If we were 7-4, then I could see him gutting it out. But we're not. We're 4-7, and probably will be 4-8 after the Philly game.

2) With LaFleur, he's allowed Rodgers to drift to an extreme where he (Rodgers) feels comfortable publicly dressing down his head coach. It's unprofessional and a bad look. I don't know if MLF is having any conversations behind closed doors, or if he's just brushing it off as "in the heat of the moment," but it's not how Rodgers should treat his coach. Does that mean he has to be a robot and have no emotion? Of course not. They won't agree on everything, but man -- MLF has given Rodgers a long leash to do as he pleases and Rodgers still isn't happy. Which leads me to my next point....

You find out what you're made of when things are going bad.

Anyone can ride the wave when the team is playing well. Anyone can enjoy it when the Packers are scoring lots of TDs and making plays all over the field. Anyone can ride that wave. But the real measure of any person really is when everything is crumbling around you....things just are not going right and it feels like the whole world is against you. What is Rodgers going to do? Throw a tantrum at LaFleur? Rip his young WRs to shreds?

Or rally the troops? Or, take a seat on the bench if he keeps throwing ducks out there? The Eagles have a ferocious pass rush -- Rodgers knows each time he plays there is risk of injury. But considering he's already injured, how much further does he want push it? As the saying goes from Shawshank Redemption, "every man has his breaking point. All it takes is time and pressure."

Have Rodgers or the Packers actually said the thumb is broken? There has been lots of innuendo about the thumb, but I have seen nothing definitive. ColdWorld also raised the issue of a hairline fracture versus a full break.

Doctor friends of mine have chuckled about the notion of playing with a full break, saying the thumb would be in splints or a cast if it was a full break. I think fangirl (nurse) mentioned something similar. Given the conservative nature of the Packer medical staff, I just have a hard time believing Rodgers is playing with tape on a full break.

Is Rodgers playing hurt, undoubtedly. And given the predatory nature of the NFL, I probably wouldn't want to disclose an injury either. However if it is a full break, he needs to be sat down until it heals.

Yes. I had to google it since this is more of an opinion vs news based site but from comments I had read it sounded like there was an announcement a couple of days ago and sure enough there was.

He did say so. However a thumb break can be catastrophic or relatively inconsequential in the case if a chip or hairline. Reading what he said, I’d wager heavily on it being one if those. It shouldn’t be a major issue if so.

Guarantee it wasn't a full break. At most IF anything it is a hairline fracture. Yes, I haven't read anything from the Packers confirming the break.

Many years ago while working as a Merchant Marine during college break and trying to make money for college (don't get me started on college loans and govt payoffs) was injured by getting hit by a large line/rope under many tons of pressure on my shins and was thrown about 75 feet from where I was hit. My shins immediately swelled up looking like I had softballs attached to the front of my shins. Incredibly painful but didn't go to the doctors and worked 12 hour days non-stop for 60 days. The dark brusing colors took like 6 to 9 months to completely disappear. Only this year due to x-rays did I learn I fractured one of them. Made me immediately think of Jack Youngblood playing in the Super Bowl many years ago with a fractured leg. No doubt some degree of a hairline fracture.

What stands out in my mind is IF Rodgers fractured his thumb is how poorly a coach the Packers have with Rodgers playing poorly while the Packers have a 3rd year former 1st round QB sitting on the bench. Love would have a better arm than the injured Rodgers, and would be a much better runner. Plus, the team was losing and Love needed playing experience. To me Love not playing was/is malpractice! If I was Love I'd be like screw LF and the Packers and would jump ship at first opportunity.

I called for the Packers to sit Rodgers all the way back to before the game against the Commanders. I thought that was the prefect scenario to give Love a start against a weaker team on the road. It would have given the Packers a chance to begin to see what they have in Love. Then I advocated for Love to start against the Lions but again the Packers played Rodgers yet again.

MLF has had his chances to sit Rodgers and play Love. He didn't even with a legitimate reason to start Jordan Love. I will not be surprised if Rodgers continues to play even if the Packers lose to the Eagles this week.

The Packers management refuses to make changes when the situation calls for something to be done. We've seen it time and time again. NO ILBs forever until the Packers signed Campbell. Re-signing Lowry and continuing to play him. No on beside Clark forever. Retaining DCs and STs for years after it was proven that they were incompetent. We have watched this extend onto the field with coaching failing to make in game adjustments and allowing repeated mistakes week after week. It's not getting better. Thanks, Since '61

We wail on Murphy, but take a look at the collective on the BOD. They're all part of the one-ring circus.
There is zero accountability throughout the model's hierarchy. I would rather have a bee's hive make decisions.

Nominations to the board, original and for reelection are controlled by Mark Murphy as President. That’s true directly for the Executive Board and the remaining 36 non-execs. Are you surprised therefore?

This is why the President of the Packers should never be involved in a hands on way with Football decisions. It’s a total conflict of interest to have a tame board appointed by a non owner who is implicated in the problems up to his neck. No responsible Board would have allowed that in an organization owned and structured as the Packers are.

The executive committee should have reined in Murphy when he overstepped his boundaries by dictating any football operations related decisions beyond hiring a general manager to actually MANAGE the football operations.

The bod or Exec Comm should work with the president in managing all of the non-football operations of the Green Bay Packers. Their oversight ends there.

if the GM is not successful or not actually doing their job, the president can step in and remove him from the position while seeking another GM to take on the role. A GM not doing their job (demented TT) or being ineffective at the position (borderline BG) can and should be removed from the position, however that removal certainly does not pass the GM responsibilities on to the GBP President. Here is where murphy overstepped and the exec comm didn't reel him in.

It is never too late to correct a mistake, but in this case even providing a remedy for the mistake will not fix all of the damage done to the chain of command and the broken respect that has occurred.

Many careers, both coaches and players as well as BG and all of the pro and college personnel under him, have been irreparably damaged by the heavy-handed moves by Murphy. It sure seems to me that a very clear case could be assembled by the Exec Committee for his immediate removal. It should happen, but instead the Exec Comm will allow status quo to continue until Murphys retirement date.

There is no rule that a GBP President gets to serve until retirement age. The president can be removed at any time by the BOD and Exec Committee.

Unfortunately the BOD and Exec are a bunch of gutless wonders.

I am finding it extremely difficult to maintain my fandom for this franchise with the executive structure so totally fucked up and not a drop of leadership to call a spade a spade and hold leadership accountable.

The combination of murphys ego, and Aaron Rodgers ego just makes this franchise completely un-likable.

Coupled with MLF's lack of a forceful personality and Gutekunst's acquiescence to MM's power play there seems to be only EGOMANIACS or MUILQUETOASTS in the hierarchy of the GBP today.

It is difficult to have pride in the current organization, that is true.

I think every shareholder that can make it to Green Bay for the next Shareholder meeting should attend and greet the officers with the loudest chorus of booooo's ever heard in Lambeau Field and keep it up until they realize that they will not be able to hold their self=congratulatory little love-fest and they leave the stage still being driven from the platform by derisive catcalls from the shareholder crowd.

Seeing the deer in the headlights look LaFleur exhibits almost every game now it's nearly impossible to ascertain how he managed to win 39 games in three years. Rodgers to Adams was apparently such a deadly combination that they could beat you with a team of high school kids playing the other positions. How the hell did LaFleur win so impressively for three years, then, with a team touted early on as his best yet, he crapped the bed like a milk cow in the morning?

Today, LaFleur plays passive and looks overwhelmed, seemingly on the verge of a breakdown at any moment, flapping his arms hoping the crowd can save him. How did we get here? Blame Barry for the defense. Blame losing coaches, who likely propped the young head coach up for those years, for the poor offense. But when it comes to LaFleur's relationship with Rodgers, he's brought Rodgers' scorn upon himself. Rodgers is a vicious competitor, we've seen him when he smells victory, he's a predator. A Doberman. With an ego the size of Kilimanjaro. LaFleur was totally unprepared to compete with that level of intensity. We all knew the rest of the league thought of Rodgers as a diva, but at least he was our diva. Our Doberman. Now Rodgers is our problem. And LaFleur has no clue how to solve it.

This team has descended into mediocrity. Maybe worse. We all feel like the ship is sinking. Ulysses logged several thousand sea miles and it took him ten years to get home from the Trojan Wars. I'm here for the long haul so it will be interesting to see how long and what it will take for the Packer ship to be righted. It likely won't happen until LaFleur is no longer at the helm.

Very well said. After witnessing LaFleur's passive nature, it's clear this relationship wasn't going to work once things started going off the rails. What this team...and Rodgers...needed was more of a no-nonsense coach, like a Holmgren or Parcells, who wouldn't hesitate letting their QB know who is in charge. But the trend was to go with the latest young, supposed offensive guru du jour.

Maybe if the vetting process involved more than ONE interview before offering him the job, they would have realized MLF's personality is more befitting of an OC as opposed to a HC.

Problem is, there are no Holmgrens or Parcells out there anymore. Coaches are now expected to coddle superstar players. The era of the hardass coach is a thing of the past even though its exactly whats needed in this game more than ever. The NFL has marketed and catered to quarterbacks to the point they are now above everything, including coaches. The NFL is killing its own product.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but if the Packers had sat Rodgers when he broke his thumb, it might be healed by now. And we’d know what we could do with Love. And our record wouldn’t be much worse, and might be better.

In Minnesota, Leslie Frazier was not a great coach, but he had the courage to to keep Favre on the bench at the end of his last season. Mike Sherman let Favre play the 2003 with a broken thumb ( of course, we didn’t have a quality backup then like we do now).

Like I said, hindsight. But Rodgers shouldn’t have been playing with this injury. I don’t think the losing streak was a coincidence.

Things were already trending down before the thumb injury. I correctly predicted things would get ugly before that Giants game (where Rodgers first hurt the thumb) because the writing was on the wall. They nearly choked the game away vs the Bucs and had to go to OT to beat the Bailey Zappe ked Patriots. Some they were 3-1 despite playing like ass in 3 of those 4 games. All the signs were there. Im sure his thumb is hurting, but he and this team sucked before that.

The FO and MLF had to of had discussions about the three 13-3 seasons and who was actually the reason for them. The moment they decided to pay Rodgers that new deal, the answer was realized, Rodgers. It wasn't Rodgers alone, naturally, but it wasn't MLF as many here proclaimed during that three season run, naturally again with eyes shut.

The moment that deal was offered and accepted, it gave Rodgers all the power he needed to do what he wants, and at the moment, to play regardless of the injury hurting the team. Benching Rodgers or not, the FO will have a hard time getting value in a trade for either Rodgers or Love. How will it help the team with Rodgers sitting on the bench next season collecting $50 million. If Rodgers is a vindictive person, that will surely hurt this team.

Rodgers had the leverage before the contract, and possibly more so after its signing. MLF is now just along for the ride, or until the FO can find a way to trade Rodgers, if even for only the salary cap money, if that's even allowed.

The fact that there was never a 'no-trade-clause' in any of Rodgers' contracts makes it even more surprising that they didn't use it. Worse still is that they didn't believe enough in Love to even attempt doing so. They knelt to the Power of Rodgers, not Love, sorry Huey Lewis, and the breakup is even more difficult than before the contract.

I believe this is called getting your 'just' deserves.

If the Packers were truly a team in the ultimate team sport, then I believe sitting Coach LaFleur until Rodgers' thumb healed might have worked. Those two men may have a type of symbiotic relationship where one can promote healing in another. At this point, I guess we'll never know.

It has been apparent that the front office over rides the coaching staff as to the starting lineup based on draft pick status (especially if a draft choice was traded up for that player) since Ted Thompson left several times. It got to the point with Amari Rodgers that even the casual fan could notice it and the organization out of obvious embarrasment had to release him. The team traded 5 fourth round picks to move up for Burks, Love, Savage, and Rodgers, that is the spot where you should get your long term starting players. Now the big question is do they give Love his 5th year guaranteed option and they have little in season experience to make that call. On the other hand in reference to keeping players in the starting lineup based draft status, they already gave Savage his $8M guarantee for 2023 and he is basically a high paid clone of Will Redmond, neither can cover or tackle.

I give Rodgers credit for gutting it out. Even though there are some here who poo-poo the severity of the injury(including an RN) the reality is it's a painful injury that gets worse with activity. It has been revealed the injury is a break and will require surgery after the season.

With the expected loss to Philadelphia, it's a good time to IR Rodgers so he can have the surgery now. My thinking is one way or another it's his last year in Green Bay.

Rodgers doesn't play like Favre did when injured. Favre's game was all toughness and gutting it out no matter how ugly it looked. Rodgers is a finesse guy that thrives on precision and demands perfection. Right now he is playing far from perfect and needs to be shut down. Get that thumb fixed and let it heal. Time to see what we have in Love.
