Confessions of a Polluted Mindset 2020 - They're on the Field!

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Football Equipment: The Packers equipment managers have something to do again. Helmets, shells and pads are actually being handed out and in use again. Welcome to NFL 2020.

Christian Kirksey: The man has been killing it in the interview department. Here's just one example: “I think I’m going to have a good career here. I feel it. I feel right at home. It feels like Iowa,” Kirksey said of his short time with the Packers. “I’m a Green Bay Packer and I’m fully invested.”   If his play on the field matches his attitude, the Packers got a steal. Picking off Aaron Rodgers in his second real practice with the team is certainly a good start.

AJ Dillon: Tons of fun is being had on the internet surrounding the size of Dillon's legs, but it's no joke, and it's not just his legs, although they have garnered such attention for good reason. Here's Christian Kirksey giving his perspective as a defensive player faced with having to tackle Dillon. “As a linebacker, you want to man up and say ‘if I see you in the hole I’m going to hit you up top,’ but when you see how big he is, you almost gotta go low,” Kirksey laughed. “But then you look at his legs, and he’s got tree trunks. So you might wanna think twice with that too. I’m excited to see what he brings to the table.” I love Aaron Jones, but okay, I'll place one foot onto the AJ Dillon bandwagon.

#TBLS: Well, it seems the Tim Boyle Laser Show is on full display early in camp. From all reports, he's a much-improved quarterback than what we saw last camp. Do we credit LaFleur's staff for better development than he showed after one year under McCarthy's watch? Did the threat that the Jordan Love draft selection present to his comfy QB2 position on the team wake up the sleeping giant inside Boyle? Or can we just call it a natural progression of a third year player combined with a year of getting comfortable in this offense?

Swervin Ervin: Some early reports out of camp stated that Ervin was working with the wide receivers rather than the running backs. I haven't seen mention of whether that has continued or not.  I don't think it means a position change is in the works, but rather a strong indication of how he will be used out of the backfield. The issue for LaFleur will be finding a way to get Ervin enough snaps where he can be a factor in games.

Right Tackle: Billy Turner getting a lot of run at right tackle does not give me a warm fuzzy. I saw too many instances last year where fast defensive tackles got past Turner in pass protection. And we want to put him out on an island at tackle? I'm crossing my fingers that Wagner is the eventual starter there.

Thanks Al

*Equipment managers: They are going to have their hands full especially during this time of the virus. Can you imagine the extensive cleaning procedures that are in place for all equipment?!
They have a big job ahead of them.

* Kirksey: His signing Is one of the most unheralded signings of the off-season and it didn’t cost them anything in the draft compensation calculations. Kirksey seems like a natural born leader.

* Dillon: I haven’t seen this much hoopla over a pair of legs since the Sharon stone incident.
But I must admit I am intrigued as well.

* The Golden Boyle: Lighting things up with the laser show! The Packers obviously are going into the season with three quarterbacks and you can never have too many good ones.
Down the road maybe even they’ll be some trade value for Boyle. Just sayin.

*Swervin Ervin: is a weapon and not just on special teams. If you go back and look at a few of last year’s games towards the end of the season they were using him quite a bit in the backfield in creative ways.

*Turner at right tackle: I’m sure Turner is just a break glass in case of fire back up plan.
They spent pretty good money on Wagner and I’m sure they are planning on playing him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Lane Taylor starts at right guard, but there’s "a lot a ball game left"

that is all...

I've said my peace on Dillon being the reason Jones won't be back already, so I won't get into it again. But I do think this was Gute's plan. :(

Some combination of Turner, Wagner, Taylor and Patrick on the right side means we won't be a top 10 OL unit as a whole this year (like we have been since at least 2012). But we won't be a bottom 10 unit there either: at least there's some competition with players who have produced decently at various points in their careers. I'm not in love with our OL, but it's a helluva lot better place to be than we are at ILB, WR or DL.

Bearmeat I agree. But if the plan is to run the ball more frequently I’m not very confident that we have the guys on the right side of the OL to pull it off. We’ll know by about 3-4 games into the season.

I think LaF may plan to run more frequently, but with #12 making play calls at the line, I'm skeptical as to how many more runs will actually be had.

Agree Dobber. I’m hoping that the Packers come up to the LOS snap the ball and run the play. I understand that Rodger likes to read the defense and change the play if appropriate, but too often he runs the clock down to the last second.

If the run game is effective I would prefer to snap the ball quickly and keep pounding the DLs and wear them down rather than giving them another 10-15 seconds to catch their breath. Keep pounding them until they make a stop, assuming that they make a stop.

Besides I’m not sure that the Packers have the receiving corps to exploit defenses even if Rodgers reads them correctly. Better to run successfully and set up the play action passing game.

Thanks, Since ‘61

Im betting ghe plan is to have Jones and Dillon. Not only one of them. Probably a bit of a hedge on getting Jones signed. J Williams is more the odd man out. Kinda depends on Jones taking an Eckler type contract. Jones is a nice RB, but he's small and has injury concerns. There is no denying that. He isn't a great RB nor is he a legit bellcow. He has to continue to have his touches managed like both LaFleur and McCarthy have done.

Haven't heard much about Njiman or the rookie offensive linemen yet. Patrick and Taylor both seem to be playing well although it is early. The Packers seem to have an abundance of interior OL but not much depth at tackle. I hope either Runyan, Njiman or Turner can step up and play tackle because I am not a fan of Alex Light as the Packers backup tackle. He was beaten too often last year when he played.

TGR reported in the day two roundup this: "Bolton and Nijman on are PUP. Owczarski" so it appears we won't hear anything about Nijman anytime soon. :(

Two downvotes due to presenting indisputable facts! Or perhaps you just inherited my fanbase by mentioning me.

I am not surprised Bolton started on the PUP. ACL in late August, but he could return soon as a year recovery time is not unusual.

Nijman went on IR on December 21 with an elbow injury. IDK what kind of injury, but I just thought it meant he would be out for a longer time than remained in the season. I was surprised and disappointed that he started out on PUP as we've all read lots of good things about his physical abilities (4.88 forty at 6'7" and 324 pounds, a sizzling 4.5 second 20-yard shuttle), and hoped he could put it together in time for this year. Hard to do that from the tub, and he needed reps and development. Huber had Nijman as the 43rd ranked player on the Packers roster despite a scout telling Huber that while Nijman looks more like an OT than anyone, "The guy hasn’t the slightest clue of how to play his position, especially as a run blocker,” a scout said before the 2019 draft when asked why Nijman wasn’t more highly regarded. Fingers crossed.

I agree w/ the scout. I don't think Nijman is an NFL player. He is big and a great athlete, but he's never been even a good OT in college. He's probably worth a PS spot on the off chance the light goes on, but I don't see any football knowledge when it actually comes to playing the game. Typical looks like tarzan, plays like Jane type.

Don't hold your breath for any improvement in his play.

Jared Veldheer ? Taylor Trade or Turner? Can't- Try Linsley. Seems Williams is the forgotten man. Ervin, how dare they move him to WR. They were so set. He's No Desmond Howard either. Why does an Hall of Fame QB get such BS? Boyle Laser show? Check the Air in the footballs. Is Kirksey saying all the right things to make us forget about not drafting a LB #1. Or the money spent. Regardless; Pettines head will roll, if he doesn't work out. I'm still not happy with the DL. Very problematic yet. You pay a GM big bucks, and he thinks development is more important then a super-bowl. Next Article: Punt returners?

Guam, Nijman is on the PUP with an elbow. I think they were really counting on him as being a big part of our OT depth. After searching around, one outlet reported the injury as elbow/triceps, which occurred last December. He must have had a partial tear, which takes about 6 weeks of immobilization without surgery, then a steady course of therapy.

Being an OT, I would imagine they are being cautious with it to allow the most healing time possible. They kind of did the same with Kevin King if I recall correctly, taking the more cautious route. Therefore, I wouldn't count Yosh out in the mix at RT. Being he's protected on PUP, there is really no rush at the moment.

Being the course for healing (without surgery) requires time, giving him an extra 4-6 weeks if needed could be like gold. Caught a glimpse of him on the sidelines in the TC photos, and man is that dude big. I'm hoping he gets his chance to contribute.

Kirksey, Dillon, Boyle and Swervin' Ervin are all good stories at this time of the year. I can't wait to see all but Boyle in real game action, if you know what I mean. Something tells me we are going to have great middle D this season from the ILB position, we'll be crushing 3rd/4th and short to extend drives and win goalline scores, and we'll witness some great gadget plays this year from WR position and out of the backfield...

I'm with Al in hoping Wagner delivers to start the season at RT. Interesting in that this may be a look/see. Would maybe save some dough - monies that could be applied to extensions for other players if they deem his services aren't needed, and other players can fill that role.

Guam, the offensive line situation is very good, IMO, Turner, Wagner and Taylor all have taken many snaps against the division’s best, all of which have been viewed multiple times by the best talent evaluators in the organization. Then they decided to get them. They know what we got even if some of the fans don’t.

After the top six, it’s clear they like Patrick and Light enough to pay them to stay. That’s our eight, right there. Unless somebody gets hurt. I don’t know who backs up Bakhtiari.

Our interior OL is in very good shape. Your last sentence is why I worry about our tackle depth.

Interior OL is in very good shape. After Bahktiari I have concerns about ALL the other OT. Wagner has to show last year in Det was injury related. Turner has shown he can't play OT consistently. As an emergency for the remainder of a game not for couple weeks/months. Light and Nijman are a prayer at best. Huge concerns at OT. Veldheer will be on speed dial.

Dillon will contribute early. He provides something they just don't get from the current stable of backs, and is the reason why Ervin is getting looks in the WR room. Ervin might be their surest and best returner (the game seemed to be too big for Shepherd last year), and having multiple position groups where he can contribute solidifies his place on the roster. RB is just too deep for him to be a RB-only, now.

One underrepresented story is that Oren Burks has looked better in camp. His inability to stay healthy in previous preseasons has really hindered his development (IMO). It remains to be seen whether he can stay on the field, but him (or frankly any other ILB on the depth chart) turning into a player would go a long way toward solidifying the D.

Finally...the OL. Concerned with what might be sizing up to be a very average (or less) right side of the OL. It's not something the Packers have had to contend with much in recent history. A couple years ago, when McCray and Bell struggled at RG and Bulaga was in and out of the lineup, we saw what it was like to have a subpar chunk of the OL. They can't have that and expect to see the offense advance. They need to find their best combo and get them on the field, but right now? Very concerned given the lack of live fire to prep the line.

Burks is bigger as he is now playing in the mid-240s and is back to benching 325 pounds, per Zach Kruse. I haven't seen any tweets about his play at all, though. Still, GB moved up to take him in the late 3rd, and Burks could be a real force if he can get it together.

I've seen a handful of tweets about Greene that are positive. Still, I'd love to see a 245-pound ILB handling that hybrid ILB position or just being available as the 2nd ILB in base should the Packers decide that Burks' development warrants using that formation more. Greene gives Pettine more flexibility against certain teams so I don't mean to discount him. Again, fingers crossed.

It is definitely crunch time for Burks now in year 3. I want to see if he is able get off blocks, a pec injury could make this next to impossible, so maybe it is simply injuries that were holding him back. I hope that is the case.. He and Jackson need to show they are starters now in year 3.

I'm starting to get hope restored in Burks. Read an ESPN article that Burks Burks could only bench 135 and his injured pec wasn't firing. Thats been fixed and now doing like 350 bench and his weight is up to 240+. He's now built like an ILB, instead of a Safety masquerading as an ILB.

Nice overview Al. Radom thoughts. The number of mentions of Dillon's legs in my tweet stream is amusing. (early camp stuff) The right side issues have been known for years, replacing a starting tackle on either side is hard. This is the third time the Packers have tried to replace Bulaga. My guess is MLF, like last year is eyeballing the vets for the best combo outside of the starters. If Turner did not have the mental breakdowns in play, then his RG position would not be at risk. With Wagner the Packers have to question if can he play a whole season. Depth is a serious problem on the OL for this team. Starting Taylor could solve a whole lot of problems on the right side, but can Turner play at both G and T slots if he's a backup. (and let us not forget about Turner's contract. Pretty heavy for the Packers to carry these days) PS. What explodes first. Nagler or his smartphone.... :-)
