Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - 2019 Game 1, Packers - Bears

The weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Any truth to the rumor that Antonio Brown wanted out of Oakland because they picked up DeShone Kizer? Just wondering...

Kenny Clark: Packers better get him signed to an extension quickly before he has a monster season and his price skyrockets. Speaking of Clark, how many holding penalties have you seen against interior defensive linemen? Is that even possible?

Defensive Backfield. In a previous Polluted Mindset I wrote that the Packers defensive backs would be the strength of this defense. I'll double down on that after only one game. They were everywhere, contesting catches, hitting receivers immediately and not allowing YAC. Even some of the Bear's most successful passes showed the Packers with really good coverage, And wow, do our new safeties like to hit or what?

Illusion of Complexity: The Packers didn't pull many rabbits out of hats Thursday night. The Bears were not fooled very often when the Packers tried to get cute and credit to LaFleur for recognizing that. LaFleur went with more two-TE sets, especially In the fourth quarter and they rattled off a 10-play 73 yd. drive to set Mason Crosby up for a some very important insurance points and just as importantly, ran 6:33 off the clock.

Time waits for no one:  Our own Aaron Nagler got the tweet below out before I could (he's the twitter zenmaster), but damn I was thinking the exact same thing. Snapping the ball with 0.1 seconds on the clock, delay of games, and even worse, wasted timeouts - not like you might need them at the end of the game or anything! At least Rodgers had the gumption to accept responsibility in his post-game comments. Life would be much easier overall for this team if they can get this issue worked out once and for all.

Mitch Trubisky: All offseason I kept hearing from NFL "experts" about how Mitch Trubisky was THE GUY that was sure to take a huge jump into the top-10 of NFL quarterbacks. I was confused. What exactly were they seeing that I wasn't? Alas, they must have been confused, not me. I hope this game cleared things up for them.

Bears fans: Twitter must have been down in Chicago Friday morning because there was no sign of any loudmouth Bears fans bragging about their team to Packers fans. In fact, it's still very quiet. I hope twitter can fix their issue.

Jeff Janis where are you?: If I had to pick a negative from this game that doesn't involve the subpar performance of the Packers' offense, I'd bemoan that the Packers don't seem to have a monster gunner on punt coverage as they've had in the past. Cohen was allowed to return four punts, which could have been a very dangerous thing with his skills. Luckily, the Packers coverage team stayed disciplined in their lanes and were at least able to contain him to a nine yard return average.

Elgton Jenkins: Get ready, young man. Lane Taylor got destroyed and ate some of that fine Soldier field grass on several occasions.

DBAK: This was the most human he's looked in a very long time. I have no doubt he'll bounce back.

Darnell Savage: Does anyone still think the Packers made a mistake trading up to grab him? This kid is a future All-Pro. Write it down.

Some things never change: The Packers STILL can't run the clock out to end a game.

Thanks for providing the video on the Clark holding call. I am as baffled now as I was then. Has the league commented? Had we recovered the fumble, that call could have been huge.

That was a horrible homer call on Clark, total BS.. If you call that you can call holding on every play. John Madden said that decades ago. It's far to subjective.

Also, overall, the article talking about various players like BAK, or that it's like MM never left? Give me a freekin break, they played like zero to 10 plays in preseason. Nothing like actual Game Speed and meaning to bring out the rust hangover from preseason.

Coach LaFleur is a young first time coach, he's anything but Mike McCarthy, and he's going to grow as a coach. Watch that locker room footage and Tell me it's like MM never left. That locker room is playing for the man, he's building an entirely different culture. Just wait until this guy gets a season under his belt, hell, even another 3-4 games.

That was a phenomenal opener! Our guys will get nothing but better moving forward. I won't say we "stole one", we ground out a big win with a rookie coach and a vastly improved roster. The Stock just spiked. They need to maul the Vikings this week in Lambeau.

no one is saying LaFleur is McCarthy, but if you have eyes, you saw the offense do some things we all blasted McCarthy for. the point was to say that maybe it wasn't all McCarthy. I think you missed (or ignored) that part.

When the Packers are in sync they move fast. When Rodgers feels they are not he tries to make the D give them the play by revealing their plan. That’s my take for what it’s worth.

Running out the clock on the ground is tough against the Bears’ run D for anyone. Still need to sprinkle in some first downs.

Once up in the game and being able to stop the Chicago O except on the one drive where they gave up poor starting position, why open the playbook? I liked the two TE approach with speed deep. Was it particularly effective? No, but execution was part of that, however it was effective enough.

I was again impressed with the Chicago front 7. In addition to run D and pressure, their lateral speed is impressive. This is not a team for end arounds and sweeps. The speed of their ILBs impacts shirt crossing routes as well.

Against the Vikings there should be more space in the short to intermediate areas to get that game going and more opportunities to use the RBs in the passing game or with Davis to exploit width behind Adams and MVS. The next game ought to see more of the playbook unfolded, I believe.

As to the Guards, I think you have to include Linsley and give credit to Pagano for a plan that, while it fits his style, also acknowledges that our tackles are as good as they come. In very in MM like manner, he didn’t just rely on his players undoubted ability, but schemed to focus it on our weak point.

Cohesion for the central linemen is critical. They have to play as a unit nit divorced from what the player to the left or right is doing. Against perhaps the best front they will face admittedly, what I saw is that that was lacking.

Turner has never played a down in anger with Linsley or Baluga, linsley missed time with injury and the Madison at center experiment, Taylor missed time for Jenkins. Even in practice this line seldom played together consistently. In my mind, that proved to be a huge mistake. The lack of coordination was exposed time and time again making individual efforts uncoordinated and individuals exposed to Pagano’s concerted and focused pressure. The handling of the line in TC was a mistake in my view. I believe that it will improve with playing time, however.

It definitely wasn't all Mccarthy. It definitely wasn't all TT. Rodgers definitely isn't without blame. It was a perfect shit storm of terrible coaching, horrible talent evaluation and player acquisition, and a QB who hasn't been a top 5 QB for a while now.

Rodgers' best days are behind him. He can still manage the game, but unless the OL improves SIGNIFICANTLY (running & pass protection) and SOON, the Packers will struggle to make .500. The rust has rust.

THere's been a very small handful of commenters here who have stated repeatedly that there is a lot of misplaced blame laid on MM's shoulders that belonged at least equally on Rodgers.. And we were saying it for the last few years.

I couldn't believe after Thursday night's game that there were comments here at CHTV from a number of posters stating that MLF's decision to throw the ball on second down during a clock run off situation (to seal the game) was "Innovative", "Creative", and "Something we wouldn't have seen from MM". Holy Effing denial, batman.. It was an utterly stupid call, and I don't believe for a second that MLF, with an offense that builds its identity around the ground game called a pass into the huddle on a down where yardage isn't even as important as forcing the opponent's TO... As far as I'm concerned, that's classic #12.

I'll say it yet again: Rodgers is the most talented QB in the league.. but make no mistake about it, he's got wild diva tendencies that need to be reigned in. Playing as a team and chain of command trump individual talent. Please, Rodgers, make me look like a fool for suggesting you're the most talented coach killer in NFL history. I'm begging you.

Creative no, Novel no, good call, yes. It would have got a first down against that defensive call had it been executed adequately. Good audible I believe conceptually.

Inserting a pass like that against a run focused D is not a bad idea if it’s not expected rather than as a staple tactic.

Coldworld…..most plays work when they're executed correctly. That's why it's not about individual talent, it's about the team executing.

However, the point is to win and they don't give style bonuses in the W/L column. The percentage play in that situation is to grind the clock. Those of you who don't think we should play the percentages should go to Las Vegas and test out your theory there first.

Sometimes, coaches start thinking they're smarter than they are. If that same scenario comes up again I hope Gutekunst runs the ball.

Being unpredictable in games isn’t a bad thing. If the pass was complete it’d be a good call. We need to shore up our offensive line somehow. I realize how good the Bears D is, but so is the Vikings and Lions line. By the way I’m glad the Lions blew their opening game. Living in northern Michigan I love the Lions play the last , what seems like forever- hopeless play. I’m not convinced we have all the running backs we’re going to need- hope I’m wrong. Especially watching the Patriots and what versatility they have. Vikings got me real nervous. They look like a tough out. We’ll see. Just some rants of mine. Go Pack.

Carlos

I disagree “If the pass was complete it’d be a good call.”

We could have forced them to use a TO with near certainty. Ask Pete Carrol about passing for short yardage to clinch the Super Bowl. Not a good call, I hope LeFleur learns from his big mistake. MM would not admit his stupid clock management mistakes and cost us probably two SBs.

There are clear times and places for “hail Mary’s and other places to run the ball inbounds. Just because a stupid call worked doesn’t make it “a good call”.

Simply put, that kind of play call will only ever be judged by its outcome: complete the pass and get the first down and you're a gutsy genius. Incomplete (or INT) and you're ignoring years of established strategy in how to handle the clock late in games and you're taking poorly-advised and unnecessary risks.

You cannot deny Rodgers had his way with the plays that were executed last year. I mean, any Packers fan is in that group.

There were things Aaron was doing that he felt were better. For the team? I would think so, but, he changed - a lot - of calls, from my view. Regardless, I don't think characterizing him as a coach killer is accurate.

Aaron has stated he wants to be coached, so, let's be patient and see how he is coached, as well as everybody else. It is WAY early to be making broad sweeping accusations. Let the Packers be coached, see how they adjust, what they change. The Bears Front 7 is completely in tact from last season. That was one of the best in the NFL last year. We saw it, and if you really review, each player who struggled, also played great. WE were the team that drove for 2 scores on that level of D. Think about that, AND, our D outplayed theirs. BE PATIENT. Watch, and see what happens. Going to be clunky stuff these next 3 weeks or so, but that should diminish. Proven players in their histories, young and old,. Inspired coaching. Thank you, Gutekunst. We'll be fine. Just watch it. I'm 100% confident this will be a very special season for the Packers.

I think the majority of Packers fans were objective enough to realize that there wasn’t only one problem with the team in recent years. Lack of overall talent/depth, stale play calling/design, and bad habits by AR. And I think most people recognized that the relationship between MM and AR had soured and become dysfunctional.

Well, we are stuck with AR’s contract and it’s easier for a HOF QB to adjust to a new scheme than it is to find a new HOF QB. So replacing MM was the logical next step after getting a new GM to upgrade the roster.

But that doesn’t change the fact that yes, AR needs to make better decisions. Hopefully at home and against as still very good but not quite as dominant Vikings D, we’ll see more of the offense we are hoping for.

That pass should be a very high percentage completion. AR has been lousy at throwing such passes for a couple of seasons now. A coach has to draw up plays that take advantage of what his players can do. A QB has to take into consideration his own strengths when calling an audible.

I love following the draft and admit to being disappointed when we traded 3 picks to move up for Savage. Essentially we gave up 2 4th rounders which as I watched preseason could have been Mack Wilson and Armani Hooker. Well then I see him play and he is all over the field. Wish he could have held onto that interception. Gutey struck gold with this young man and if Gary and Jenkins become contributors our future is bright.

What I liked about Gary is he drove right into the QB without doing stutter steps like he was in pre-season. At this level, wasting those fractions of seconds trying to fake someone out doesn't work very often. I would guess he takes to training as those six plays there wasn't any stutter steps.

With proper training he has a great chance to be very good. We are very fortunate, with the two Smith's we can bring him along slowly vs throwing him into the fire. In the later scenario, if he didn't excel right away, it would risk damaging his confidence. By only bringing him into game situations where his current strengths can be utilized will help build confidence. It will be exciting to see how he develops

Both 4ths should have been traded! Giving up both for Savage, was a head scratcher. (Point value No). Savage was rising. But Nobody considered the safeties first rounders. (Savage was from what I've seen now. ) He looks like the packers best pick, per NEED. But I wouldn't compare the picks to Hooker or Wilson. Wilson was a 5th and taken after KeKe. Hooker dropped too. Gute got his starter. Can't complain about that.

Looked like the Bears ran the same stunt scheme Fangio unloaded on them last year. Taylor, Lindsley and Turner were reactors, not actors and need to tighten up their gaps. The Bears have the bodies to pull off different schemes with Mack and Hicks getting most of the attention. Floyd getting into Bhaktiari's pads shows his improvement as a rusher. I like the DBL TE sets and get the FB involved in neutralizing the edge push.

Al, I always like your stuff and love this site. But even the announcers noticed that the only way to avoid Bak is for the opposite defense is to go around him. It was the interior rush that was successful. Bak looks at the snap so he gets the first step so, in response, the edge rusher loops inside. That’s not on Bak. Chicago figured that out and the have the players to pull that off. I think that with more reps in the newish scheme the offense will figure it out. It’s our interior line that was really struggling on Thursday. Both Bak and Bulaga did pretty good.

For as poorly as every one of them would tell you that they played, they also had made incredible plays. It was a delicate balancing act going against the Bears Front 7, same one from last year, but more experienced.

Lane Taylor and Billy Turner had difficult nights. I believe they will bounce back, as will the rest of them this week v. MIN.

After the first quarter, I think the Pack was shell shocked, especially how the o-line was getting man handled. Here's were the McCarthy comparison is all wet, the Pack made adjustments to take the heat off. The offense has some issues to clean up no doubt. Savage will be the long awaited replacement of Nick Collins. Screw all the commentators and experts calling this a boring game, they want 45 to 38 games. I'll take every game like this if the Pack wins. GOPACKGO

Williams use and value in pass protection showed up later in the game. The move to two TEs, one of whom being Lewis probably as well, though I have not focused on his blocking

Yes more blockers, short passes. They moved the ball pretty well after the 1st quarter. The bearsstillsuck didn't sustain a lot of time and long drives making their D play more.

Thanks Jersey Al, good stuff. I too am very impressed with the secondary. I finally think the Packers have fixed the problem that goes all the way back to the Falcons playoff loss. I think they are going to be the source of several turnovers.

I think the penalty on Tramon for tackle out of bounds was questionable, he started the tackle in bounds and momentum carried them out. But it was ok when Rodgers got taken down from the head along the sidelines.

I agree. I struggle with tackles commenced inbounds. I think the problem was the throw down commenced out of bounds, if not much.

I would prefer the rule to be that a legitimate tackle that commences in bounds is legitimate even if the players go out of bounds in completion of the action. The point is not to hit after a player crosses the line and ceases to expect it. I believe the current law is the problem.

I was thrilled when the Packers drafted Savage. Bob Sanders 2.0. Hopefully his career doesn't end the same way Sanders' did. Knocking on wood. Loudly.

The secondary overall is much improved but I think they can get better.

The Packers didn't completely die when Turbisky scrambled up the middle, but that is another area where I think more work could be done.

No such thing as an ugly win on the road against a division opponent. Considering A Rod had no preseason reps it was no surprise he was rusty especially against Mr Mack and company. I don't understand Matt Nagy's reasoning for Mitch T's preseason sabbatical, he's still relatively new and his constant propensity to make bad decisions like throwing into double and triple coverage needs to be addressed. But hey I'm not complaining! I think the Packers, Lions and Vikes dodged a bullet when Bears GM Ryan Paced selected Mitch T over Patrick Mahomes, can you imagine the Bears with him and that defense!

The Mahomes point is one that a lot of people go to, but it's still a prime "what if" scenario that has a ton of variables. If Chicago drafts Mahomes, do they start him right away instead of letting him learn for a year like Reid did with him? If he succeeds early, do they keep John Fox as coach and not hire Nagy? The best thing that happened to Mahomes was sitting behind a vet like Alex Smith and a coach like Andy Reid for a season to learn how to be a pro quarterback. I don't think he would've gotten that chance in Chicago.

Defense played good, although I thought they gave up some big passing plays. One time they only rushed three. They'll have to be careful with that in the future. Tramon plays a little of Woodson and Mathews in him. Savage is fast as hell. Brown could have played a little better. Some missed tackles on defense. Love the pass rush. I agree about Lane Taylor, he got blown up on a pass rush and was slow to get to another block a couple of times. Billy Turner didn't have the best game. Graham missed a key block.
Vikings will be another tough defense.

They did give up a few passing plays but very few yards after the catch. In previous seasons our defense was killed by missing tackles and turning 10-15 yard completions into 25-30 yards gains. Thanks, Since ‘61

I thought that the gunners got down there in plenty of time. Of course long hang time helps. We don’t need Janis for that coverage anymore. Davis was a gunner and did ok. The run game started to click by the end of the game. I liked the use of Lewis as a pass catcher. I think it kinda surprised Chicago. I know it surprised me, in a good way.

I am no expert, but isn’t that holding actually technically an infraction, just one that has never been enforced and almost never called outside if extreme actions because it is ubiquitous: just a part of the game?

Why that would be called on the first play of a game is beyond me.

Dumb rule. I don’t like shades of gray challenges. Technically that could be interpreted as PI under the rule, I am glad that the rule is not enforced that way!

That said, when is offensive PI egregious? When it’s obvious? If so the challenge is only there to make when the official totally blows a call for all to see? If that’s the standard, why not have 2 “the officials are blind” challenges that can be used on all types of call instead.

"LaFleur went with more two-TE sets"

I was surprised to not see them go 5 wide at all. Rodgers carved them up last season by spreading them and throwing fast. If I was playing the Bears I would want to force them into nickel to take 1 of their front 7 off the field and also force HaHa and Buster to cover.

I would agree that not all of the Packers problems were not on MM, but not all of them are on Rodgers either.

In the end a coach with as many seasons as MM had running the same offense should have been long past the communications/time out issues. Those issues should have been resolved in pre game preparations and much earlier in MMs tenure. He was the HC it’s on him.

As for MLF and AR in their first game together on the road in a noisy atmosphere, I actually think that they did OK. You never want to waste a timeout, I agree, however, in a tight game like Thursday, I would rather use a timeout to get a play call correct rather than make a mistake that could change the game in the Bears favor. Plus, it was one game, the first game, it should get better. Thanks, Since ‘61

I think Rodgers is in the mindset of waiting until the last second so he can audible to the correct play based on the defensive formation. IMO, he just needs to run the play that's called by LaFleur.

Good Post Since '61 I think it was a combination of MM Ted T and some arrogance and frustration on A Rods part. Ted T Wiffed on some draft picks and his refusal to sign higher tier free agents were an issue. Mike McCarthy 's offense became stale and predictable and he made some questionable coaching hire's especially on Special Teams!. It's only one game into the season but I think Gute has the team moving in the right direction!

Academy award to Davante Adams for "limping" off the field prior to Trevor Davis running the one-man route for a crucial 28 yard catch and run. There is no way Adams could have run that route without double coverage. Conversely, the Bears did not give much attention to a cold backup player subbing for a "hobbled" Adams. Big mistake on their part. Davis is a polished receiver with speed and needs more reps. Allison and MVS are good but do not have the quick, elusiveness TD brings to the table. We need to see more of Trevor Davis.
