College Football Season Looks Doubtful. What Does This Mean for the NFL?

Another one bites the dust.

The big news coming out of the college football world today is that the Big 10 and the Pac 12 have reportedly decided against playing a football season in 2020. That's massive news, and likely puts the entire college football season in severe jeopardy.

Assuming the college season ends up not happening (which as of this writing sure seems to be the most likely scenario), it could impact the NFL in a number of ways.

First and foremost, there's the issue of scouting. There is a whole class of players who are going to be missing an entire year's worth of tape, and who will be presumably heading into the NFL draft next spring not having played the game in almost a year and a half.

For what it's worth, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst appeared to be relatively confident the Packers would be able to handle things on a scouting front:

There's also the issue of whether or not the college season shutting down is foreshadowing a potential shutdown for the NFL.

Let's face it, the NCAA is one of the world's shadiest and greediest athletic organizations, perhaps only behind FIFA and the IOC. If the NCAA of all organizations is willing to give up on its two biggest cash cows in the same year (March Madness and college football), that's a pretty big statement. There are obviously different considerations to take into account here, and there is still signifciantly more money behind the NFL, but it's not a good sign for football in general that college football conferences appear to be willing to make this year a wash.

Yet again, the NFL has the advantage of being the last league to have to deal with the pandemic. Personally, I'm not remotely convinced they're going to manage to safely pull it off, though I'm crossing all my fingers and toes that they do.

It's looking like a fall without Saturday football. The coming weeks will determine the fate of Sunday football as well.

Mass hysteria? Really?

160,000 dead and climbing isn’t “fake news”. Not to mention we don’t even know what all of the long-term after effects might be for those who get the virus and recover. Canceling some sports seems prudent given the current situation.

The NYU study is eye opening, 78% of Covid-19 patients whom have "recovered," even many in good health are showing signs of heart damage (myocarditis)...the unknown is if this is permanent.......this is not just a respiratory illness.....one of the main reasons the Big Ten is calling the season.....

It is easy to say that if you live in an area that has been lucky enough to be unaffected. Where I live in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas it is a disaster right now. Hospitals are over capacity, they have put up temporary tents in the parking lots, rented portable units from the local school district, leased out vacant hotels and are using the convention center for patients. Medical personnel from all over the state and military teams are in the area. Seriously ill patients are being airlifted 12 hours or more drive time away for treatment. Corona is far too curable to kill off the human race but we are certainly seeing how easy it is to totally overwhelm the medical facilities of an area. Putting 80,000 people together in a stadium would be criminal until this is under better control.

Well you should have some appreciation then. Starr County to the west of me is in a "moral dilemma" level of patients. They have to decide which are more likely to survive when treating new patients much like New York had in March and April. Here the hospitals resemble war zones much like NYC was early on. It does not take millions sick to cause a breakdown of the hospitals. And we should be working to avoid that in other parts of the country.

I agree: the draft is often a dartboard the way it is, but this makes this year's draft even more of a crap shoot. To be fair, the power conferences are talking about playing in the spring...that might still be wishful thinking. As for fallout, here are my unsolicited musings...

...more freshmen will be ready to play because most of these teams are going to be getting 4-6 weeks of fall camp to replace a fall season (think of it as juiced-up spring practice only in the fall) and these kids will get a full semester plus of supervised training and meals before they get into their season. Most teams are already on campus, and some freshmen came to campus in January. This may push a lot of marginal juniors to declare early (as opposed to the promising ones below).

...a 4-6 game schedule in spring will likely kill the combine and put the onus on pro days for evaluators. Some players may drop off their teams, but many need to have game film and can't afford to miss those games. Many players who normally emerge over the course of a season might not get that chance.

...injuries that might happen in the fall that normally don't impact draft stock could have a major impact in a spring schedule where players will be hurt at draft time and their recoveries less advanced.

...I think a lot of promising juniors and redshirt sophs will stay in school based on limited game film that will drive down their draft stock, leading to a weak 2021 draft.

...the Packers' mid round comp picks that they'll secure as a result of losing players like Martinez, Fackrell, and Bulaga, might not be worth nearly as much due to a weak draft.

...even though I believe the draft in its entirety will be weak, I think we'll see more later picks who become impact players due to limited scouting and injury questions.

...dealing players for 2021 draft picks seems like a really bad idea unless you're getting top 10 picks in return (which won't happen).

In all honesty, I think it's unlikely that there's any spring football, either, since what we're really waiting on is the ability to vaccinate broadly, and college football players would be at or near the end of the priority list (first responders and military --> health care professionals --> teachers --> --> healthy 18-50 year-olds).

Yeah spring football would be nearly unworkable for players getting drafted and moving right into an NFL career after their last college season. Not sure how colleges work this without better testing protocals. As I said cepheid and other companies are requiring providers to get in line for 6-8 weeks for a machine....not sure how college athletic departments can be remotely prepared for broad molecular testing, antibody testing or even the swab for that matter.

If there is no college football this year the conferences, especially the power 5, will be the ones determining that not the NCAA. The NCCA should be very worried that COVID will speed up their lost of control of college sports and the $$$ it generates for them.

While the health risks my be the same or similar for college and pro football players the NFL will probably attempt to have a season. The dollars involved for the teams and players are to big to give up without trying. NFL player can at least opt out and receive some pay. NFL scouting and player development will adjust, the ones really hurt are the amateur athletes in all sports that are having their seasons disrupted or totally lost by COVID.

High school kids in particular change a lot between 16 and 19 years old. There are a lot of kids out there whose chances of going to college and perhaps playing pro football hinge on there being a fall sports season in HS. For all the bad hype that seems to surround college football with regard to recruiting, retention, and graduation rates, there's a community of kids who use this college opportunity to define their lives in real positive ways. I feel for them.

It's a potential nightmare situation, but the more I look at it, it's somewhat remarkable that MLB has made it through their summer camps and about 2.5 weeks of travel and 25% of the way through their schedule, and there's really only two teams (Miami and St. Louis) that have been bitten hard. I have no idea what this will look like with an NFL entourage 3 times as large and playing in close quarters, but canceling even one NFL game due to infection likely has a greater impact than a 3-game MLB series.

This football season seems like it will go on ($), but, in my opinion, at the expense of quality and of fans. Heck, 1/2 (?) of any position group can have to quarantine for 2 weeks at any time. Nothing like starting your 3rd string QB or OL for a few weeks.

And the issue of money. Maybe the lawyers and insurers are calling the shots. A couple of real bad cases could turn any team into cash negative. Not too far fetched even for the SEC, The BIG10 or the NFL. Signing waivers will not be a good look either.

I grew up being a HUGE Badgers fan. Then I got my doctorate at UT Austin when they started their post-Colt McCoy slide into very expensive oblivion. I now teach at a very large division one school in the South. The result of seeing under the dirty rug was that I now absolutely hate college football. It's greedy, awful, exploitative and in its current state, the general antithesis of what higher education should be. The only thing it has going for it that a true NFL minor league couldn't manage is getting students degrees. But if you take away the top 50 NCAA powerhouse programs (in other words, all the money) there are still plenty of colleges that would give students scholarships as a true amateur student/athlete (in that order).

I hope the NCAA in general dies a thousand deaths. Shoot it into the sun. Especially college football and men's basketball (the ones that make money). Rowing, volleyball, baseball etc... sports that aren't monetizable in other words and are ACTUALLY amateurism... those can stay.

I'm glad college football is dead for the year. I hope it is the beginning of the end and a true minor-league football alternative can gain a foothold. Starve the NCAA of talent and it dies. The vast majority of the best high school players in the country would prefer a 30k job with a shot at the big league than they would a degree. And those that didn't would become true student-athletes, and not the other way around. Short of people all of a sudden growing a conscience (lol), this is the only way to remove the wolf held by the ears.

" Starve the NCAA of talent and it dies. "

Baseball and hockey are examples of college sports coexisting with full, active minor league systems. In either case, though, the minor leagues are more vital than the college systems and generally play at a level above the college leagues.

The problem with a true minor league system in football is the expense. Large numbers of players with salaries, facilities, training and coaching staffs on a limited number of games (for revenue) would be far more expensive than other minor league sports that play a huge number of games that help to defray costs with gate, concessions, parking, etc., revenues. What's more, most 18-year-old kids need 2-3 years to develop the level of their play and their physical attributes to be even marginally competitive for a pro job...that level of speculation would be hard to manage, and the number of players in the system would likely require more than one level of play (and hence, expense).

I think the NFL will do whatever it can to help support college football for the reasons you point out. It's had a track record of doing this in the past (see: draft rules and eligibility rules).

The NFL has every reason to support college football for sure. All of those reasons start with the Benjamins. Free farm system in a high risk sport: what's not to like?

No. The NFL is going to be all about money. At least it's clear about that. And that's fine. It's a job. I don't begrudge anyone their wages - owner or employee. It's more from the college perspective that I get angry.

And you are right that financially, the NCAA will never self-immolate. The only way college football (and the NCAA with it btw) dies is if some minor league football org gets is poop together and offers a watchable product for less cost, while paying its players. A high financial and liability bar to clear for sure.

The NCAA would lose top talent to that, and then college would become gradually more unwatchable (than it already is most of the time imo). That's the only way this dies. Colleges and the NCAA will become more and more like a rabid dog as the man behind the green curtain continues to be shown for the snake-oil-peddling-fool that he is. ;)

Bearmeat's picture

While the NCAA makes bank on the March Madness tournament, men's basketball actually isn't a cash cow to the schools. Basically, the reason is Title IX. They have to spend the same amount on the women's basketball team as they do on the men's, even though the men make WAY more money. Women's sports in general, are financial losers. College football obviously doesn't have a women's team, so athletics staff and admin at big time college programs are free to use football money however they see fit. Some do use it to fund the athletic general budget but most use it to print money for the university in general and capital campaigns/recruitment fodder. It goes right back into (and solely into) the football program. "All about the kids" my ass.

Yet another reason why college football needs to die.

Directional schools who play in the non-power conferences float their athletics budgets by giving away a couple home games to get beat up by power conference teams. Those paydays are huge for those schools. When the power conferences announced that they were going to conference-only schedules a month ago, the cash cow was gone, and the MAC and Mountain West gave up their seasons before the big boys did this week.

yup. Mid-level division one ball is a wanna-be farce, rather than just all-out hypocritical nonsense. The ironic thing is the FCS and Div 3 FB is actually amateurism. These athletes are students first and foremost. Until the playoffs (which btw they have because it's not all conference money driven), the teams rarely leave their region. Regional rivalries are still a thing.

Very possible, and Love happened to fall far enough that his price became palatable. If that was the case, BG was more of a steely-eyed poker player than I gave him credit for.

Without a vaccine it’s a good decision to cancel the college football season. The NFL needs to seriously consider if they can complete a season. A few teams with multiple infections will result in canceled games and wreak havoc on the schedule. B

It will be a big embarrassment for the league if they need to cancel the season after just a few weeks. As for the players and coaches they need to consider the risks to their families.

The league is flying blind into this season for no other reason but greed. We’ll see where they are at by the end of this month. That should be decision time. Hope for best, prepare for the worst. Thanks, Since ‘61

I agree it will be difficult to get a full season in. But I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they are seeing if they can do it and adjusting as we all see how it goes.

I agree about giving them the benefit of the doubt. To me the concern is that a team could have multiple Covid infections plus numerous players injured just playing the game.

This could make a team or teams totally uncompetitive which would be a threat to the legitimacy of the results.
Another factor, what if numerous officials become infected? Are we ready to return to the era of replacement officials and the impact that would have on the legitimacy of the results?

It could get ugly for the league really quickly. The NFL does not have a very good history of well considered responses to their numerous crises. Thanks, Since ‘61

Indeed, the problem with the NFL is that they bumble their way into the right choice instead of just taking the correct action to begin with. So many examples.

In the middle of a global pandemic, possibly on a path to a global economic depression, I'm honestly not too worked up about the prospect of replacement referees. Maybe the some journeymen get to play more games than in a normal season. I guess I'm perfectly okay with that.

Cancelling the season won't actually help anything. Instead of players in practice facilities and on the game field, you will have a bunch of rich 20 somethings partying in Miami and Southern California. How does that make anyone "safer"? Everyone involved would be far safer in the team facilities being monitored daily by team doctors. It's not even a close call, here.

Owners will always be able to find someone willing to put on the uniform and take their chances.

Yes...but the real risk is in brain injuries, spinal injuries, not being able walk or hug your children. COVID seems to have taken on mythological status, but the practical reality here on Earth is: I would rather play flag football with 22 COVID patients than tackle football with 22 healthy NFL players. And, anyone that would make the opposite choice does not understand the risk at issue.

Once you accept the risk of catastrophic brain injury on every play, the marginal risk of COVID is actually pretty negligible. (Really.)

Using student athletes as human guinea pigs would be unconscionable. First and foremost, these are kids. We can get back to football when it’s safe to play again.

As always with Div 1, it's lawyers and money. (I KNOW, guns will sneak their way into too.... :-) As we all know the threat of a lawsuit will move large corporations, when nothing else does. And that's all it took for the power 5 to call it the day. Without the college presidents being proactive because it is too expensive short term, canceling the fall football season was the easy way out. This was never about Convid-19, this was about the legal liability their lawyers saw down the road. Unlike the NFL, there is no union for Div 1 to cut a deal with. So, no deal, no season. And there will be no football until a vaccine is developed. (good news is it coming faster than expected)

Athletes should be in the first place as well as their education, not someone's ambitions. So, students should, first of all, think about studying, and not about new season during pandemic. And they can use https://essayontime.com.au/assignment-help-perth if they need help. The football season is not the most important thing.

In football, the homework is of a different type from what's done at practice. Students do worksheets in the classroom and then very often are assigned to do the same kind of worksheet at home. Football requires a lot of homework that comes in the form of running and weight training, things not done at practice. For assignments, I would always recommend https://www.writingmyessay.com/write-my-assignment. Got assignments very quickly from this writing service.
