Bashaud Breeland signing with the Kansas City Chiefs

Bashaud Breeland signing with the Kansas City Chiefs

The Packers never seemed to make much of a push to bring back the veteran corner.

Breeland signed a one-year deal with the Packers and had a solid season, finishing with 20 tackles, two interceptions, four passes defended and one fumble recovery. Before joining the Packers, Breeland, a fourth-round pick in 2014, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Washington Redskins.

Well if this doesn't put all eyes on Kevin King to stay healthy this season nothing will. Good luck to Chris Gizzi. He has his work cut out for him.

albert999's picture

Right
fingers crossed we have a healthy year with new training to help!

Qoojo's picture

It's King's last year in GB if he doesn't stay healthy. Heck, I would be tempted to cut him if he has health issues in training camp.

Rak47's picture

Ok so you have two CB's both veterans while one is in their prime at 26 and the other is past his prime at 36. One costs a few million and with incentives maybe 5 mil tops, while the other is making 6.375 million. Both can play inside or outside and both can play safety and return kicks and punts. So why in the hell would anyone keep the 10 year older more expensive past his prime CB and let the younger one who's entering his prime walk? This move seems absolutely stupid to me as it makes no sense. You get a younger stronger in his prime quality CB who can do all the same things better at this point in their careers for a couple million less than the aging vet you keep. Can anyone explain how this makes sense from a football/on field, or financial, or long term perspective?

Lphill's picture

should have released Williams and try to sign Breeland. Cant count on King then if someone else goes down the Packers secondary will be a mess.

PackerAaron's picture

Don't sleep on Tony Brown.

sam1's picture

Why they let Breeland walk I bet! Also draft coming up to find one. Did think tho that Breeland would be a Packer again! Surprise move it seems!

Duke Divine's picture

Won't sleep on Brown but certainly won't count on him either. He's a walking character issue that seen his awesome talent go undrafted because being a moron always rose to the top.

Hoping he grew up in the last few months..

albert999's picture

He’ll lose his job if he doesn’t grow up fast

Coldworld's picture

Is having a reputation for stiff hips a character issue?

Tundraboy's picture

Friend of mine met Tony Brown at an army base in Cuba. He was there with a couple of other athletes doing something charitable, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. As far as Breeland, I was disappointed but they must have a plan in mind, I'm sure. There will be a lot more changes before camp.

Irish_Cheesehead's picture

Williams was more reliable than Breeland last season. Breeland has more upside at this point in his career for sure, but he has to be able to stay on the field.

dobber's picture

Who's to say that Breeland really even wanted to come back to GB?

Hawg Hanner's picture

Liked Breeland but he was going to be a one year prove it and then gone on a high dollar deal. We certainly have talent at CB right now and there will be another chance to add in the draft. You can't have every player you'd like to have. We'll be okay

cuervo's picture

Breeland wasn't that good last year folks. No big deal we didn't sign him.

GBPDAN1's picture

Bummer

ILPackerBacker's picture

Have not seen the $$$ but I was a fan and wish he had been brought back. My inclination is it would have been better to cut tramon and keep him.

High hopes for Tony Brown too.

Doug Niemczynski's picture

Just like Jared Cook....

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

RCPackerFan's picture

Wow, 1 year worth up to a max of $5 million. Its an incentive-laden deal.

Wow.

I'm honestly shocked the Packers didn't sign him to this. Unless he didn't want to be back of course.

Skip greenBayless's picture

Agree RC. 5 million in incentives was worth it. He is a bona fide legit corner who can make plays and is in his prime. So now we shift to crossing fingers on Kevin King's health and prayers that Tony Brown improves. We had total security and stability with Breeland. Why didn't they call up Rodgers and ask for a donation? Breeland is clearly worth every penny. I can't believe he signed for this cheap. This could bite Green Bay in the ass. In fact with Kevin King (of Pain) I know it will.

Dash

Rak47's picture

Packers look like they're content to stand pat til the draft. I don't expect them to bring back any of their FA's since they let Breeland walk on such a low deal. Maybe Wilkerson if they don't draft a D-lineman. I don't know how many holes Gute thinks he can plug in the draft but it will be a lot if they don't sign anymore FA's. They need an ILB, S, OL, RB, TE, and another CB, That's six needs to fill with 10 draft picks and I don't think the team can count on 6 rookies making significant contributions.

Guam's picture

Like you, very surprised at the price tag and length of contract. This was a deal the packers could have done. I think that means Pettine believes Jackson is a corner, not a safety. Otherwise we are thin at CB.

Rak47's picture

I don't have high hopes for Jackson at CB, I think Brown will be the better player at CB. I'm disappointed at letting Breeland walk considering King's injury and all the unknowns behind him and Jaire. If King and or Jaire miss any lengthened time the CB group won't look strong at all. I shudder to think of having to roll with Jackson and Brown for a 4-6 game stretch.

marpag1's picture

And if Josh Jackson is a corner, then we are thin at safety.

Wait... actually, we're thin at safety one way or the other.

dobber's picture

I think it means that they're going to give Jackson every opportunity to prove that he can't play CB.

OskarFromMKE's picture

Tony Brown SZN!

JohnnyLogan's picture

Very puzzling. Rather him than having to count on King or another rookie. He's a legitimately good NFL corner. Would love to know the reason.

Coldworld's picture

I’m guessing it could be “chance to be the number 1 cornerback.”

GLM's picture

That would seem to put CB in play for a high pick....unless there's another veteran out there who can be signed, who can make a difference.

albert999's picture

Amos is gonna have to cover a little more of the field now

NJMagic's picture

It's clear BG felt he was just too slow to play the position (although why he then drafter JJ is a mystery to me!). He was a good corner but not a great corner; he would have had to be protected over the top on most plays.

Will reserve judgement until the entire off season plan is done...

albert999's picture

Darqueze Dennard is a solid corner available and could be signed cheap i believe for depth

dobber's picture

Last I heard, Dennard is looking for a lot more money than Breeland....$10M aav.

albert999's picture

Really
He won’t get it. He would be solid at 3-5mil

HankScorpio's picture

I don't think this moves the needle much. He is a solid player but nothing all that special, at least for his brief time in GB. There is no such thing as too many CBs. So whether he is around or not, they should take any opportunity to add help when it makes sense (ie the price is right). The 2019 pass defense was never going to hinge on him.

I wish him well in KC! With some better health, I hope he plays good enough to cash in next year. But nothing I saw in GB leads to me believe that will happen.

PackerAaron's picture

Agree with all of this, Hank.

marpag1's picture

Agree. Breeland is OK-ish, but I think people are overvaluing him simply because the Packers need depth at the position. But was Breeland really the best available corner still on the market? Was he so much cheaper than comparable options? Highly unlikely...

Samson's picture

"The 2019 pass defense was never going to hinge on him."

About as correct as one can get regarding Breeland. -- An OK CB who would have had minimal affect on the overall "D". -- In fact, another Alexander may pop up for the Pack in the upcoming draft. -- Gute has a plan.

Skip greenBayless's picture

"Gute has a plan."

So did Custer!!

Dash

albert999's picture

wow

Lare's picture

Ron White was right.

Johnblood27's picture

So did Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.

BoCallahan's picture

The problem was, Custer didn’t have a plan. He acted out of arrogance. Pride goes before the fall.

CAG123's picture

Man I’m tired of depending of on young 1-2 years in to make an impact every year it doesn’t hurt to have some solid veteran depth in the secondary. So what draft another corner? Depend on King to stay healthy? Hope Alexander continues to develop?

albert999's picture

That’s why i mentioned Dennard

albert999's picture

The Packers now have seven cornerbacks under contract for 2019: Jaire Alexander, Tramon Williams, Kevin King, Josh Jackson, Tony Brown, Will Redmond and Natrell Jamerson.

carlos's picture

He’s gone. What’s done is done. Time to move on. Must not have overwhelmed too many people in Green Bay. We’ll never know.

Lare's picture

Agree, if the Packers felt he was essential to the success of the defense they would have signed him.

carlos's picture

Like you’re picture Lare

carlos's picture

Don’t know if I want to Dash. lol

Lare's picture

It's nothing major carlos, it's just a picture of a troll named Rash.

sam1's picture

Read another article that said he said he wanted to be starter and didn't think he had that chance in GB! Makes sense with the other starting corner in KC leaving!

Minniman's picture

Right or wrong, it speaks volumes of the esteem that Pettine holds Alexander and King in - Breeland either believes that it is hubris on the part of the Packers believing in their draftees and he couldn't break in as CB #1.... or that they are actually better and his best chances are elsewhere.

Kansas may have a high octane offense, but the defense is changing wholesale this year

Ustabeayooper's picture

Breeland was looking for a long term deal. The only way he gets it is to go to a team that will give him the ability to start to get a longer term deal with significant signing money. Kc can do this , GB can't. It was not in his best interest to sign with GB. This is the reality of free agency.

sam1's picture

Nope signed one year 5 mil contract. Long term not in cards, seems if Pack wanted him they could have easily paid this. Breeland said he wants to be starter! Crux of problem, start or not chance!

Coldworld's picture

He didn’t say he had. He said he wanted to put himself in a position to with a team that would both play him in a starting role and have an opening for the long term.

sam1's picture

Not from article I read, said he was at this point the starter there he was told.

sonomaca's picture

If Brown decides he’d rather play football and make millions rather than fight and give attitude, then I’m sure Pettine can scheme things just right for him.

My guess is that they liked Brown enough to let Breeland walk.

dfarmer's picture

Hope this is part of a "plan". But then I was a TT backer up until 3 years ago...

Skip greenBayless's picture

Well from what I am hearing that was about the time Gute started making decisions for Ted behind the scenes due to Ted's declining health. The Packers kept Ted there but in name only. Others were helping out with draft decisions and Gute had a major part in the last three years drafts. Let's hope Gute has learned from his past several years of mistakes and improves.

STFU with the conjecture and innuendo.

I like this site, but your asshole-ishness is just getting over the top.

Tone it down and stick to facts or just STFU completely.

Goddam troll...

Hey Al, do you really need a shit-stirrer this much?

I understand Corey J. as a columnist, but why put up with this?

This site can carry volume without this much garbage.

4thand1's picture

John is out for blood. lmao

Lare's picture

I regret that I have but one thumbs up to give for this post.

LarryPennell's picture

I couldn’t agree more, especially since Gute wasn’t involved with college scouting after the 2015 season. I assume using the internet to look up information is difficult for some.

Skip greenBayless's picture

JohnBlood, I ask you nicely to read again what you just wrote and tell me who's the person here that should "tone it down". If any rational person is reading what you wrote vs. what I wrote you would be the guy they would put in a mental hospital.

What I say is my opinion. Just because you don't like what I said or even how I said it doesn't give you the right to talk the way you do to another person.

I don't agree with most of you people because I don't care whether I get a "like" or not. You all do. It's the most important thing to all of you. That's why I call you the herd. You are obsessed with being liked, I'm not. I just voice my opinion and I try to be respectful. If people are a-holes like you right now to me and many others are I treat them in kind.

Now please tone down the rhetoric. We all are Packers fans. That's why we are here.

P.S. That wasn't too nice either what you said about Corey J. You should apologize for your erratic behavior. You embarrassed yourself.

Cubbygold's picture

Gute, go get Tre Boston. Injuries always seem to hit the area with the least depth, and right now GB is one Amos injury away from a season changing issue in the secondary. Lots of young talent from the last few drafts, but we have no idea if King will stay on the field or if these other guys will develop.

Can't spend all this money on the front 7, only to watch the whole thing collapse with a depleted secondary. Need Tre and at least one prospect in the draft.

Coldworld's picture

I think they will bring in veteran depth. I don’t think in the near future though.

sam1's picture

FS Curtis Riley in GB today, see what happens!

sam1's picture

Riley left w/o contract!

Doug Niemczynski's picture

I had a feeling this would happen.

Doug Niemczynski's picture

Let's draft some offense. ..jagging around with this defense every year... my lordy. .Maybe we can get rhe offense straighted back out rhen focus back on defense next year. geez..this sucks!!

Skip greenBayless's picture

Doug, I am going to tell you right now that the Packers will go heavy on offense with the draft especially early. It's no secret that you are a man who loves a good tight end. You'll get your wish Doug. It will be Hock or Fant IMPrO.

Coach JV's picture

This one just pisses me off... Front Office dropped the ball on this one.

Doug Niemczynski's picture

ha ha

sam1's picture

Free Safety Curtis Riley visited with Packers today, reason maybe Brice and Breeland gone!

4thand1's picture

The Packers may get greedy with the 1st pick.

Coach JV's picture

Hehehe... I saw what you did there

sam1's picture

Just read Packers mistake found and they have less than $5 million left in cap space, reason why Riley probably walked away w/o contract!

D Ernie's picture

Maybe were all wrong and breeland was thinking, this team sucks I'm outta here. Sure made a big move for very little money. The pack probably offered more than that.
All I know is we need corners and safeties now, not that I miss Brice, good riddance.
Ps: I have no faith in king, two major shoulder injuries in college, should have never been drafted in the first place. Missed big parts of two seasons.

Dragon5's picture

Breeland another injury-prone 7 life path...for those disappointed he didn't re-sign with us, smile...we're better off without him :)
