Around the NFC North: Week 1 2024
The best team in the division is in last place.
By Mike Price

After one week the clear best quarterback in the NFC North was... Sam Darnold? Every year there are crazy results in week 1 and every year the cognoscenti freaks out. All of a sudden the Vikings are good, the Packers defense is bad and Caleb Williams is a bust. Obviously only one of those things is probably true. Let's get into everything else we can freak out about this week.
Bears
The Bears squeezed by the Titoons, 24-17.
Game Notes
- This was quite possibly the least deserved win in history. The Bears were down 17-0 and won thanks to a defensive touchdown, a special teams touchdown (courtesy of ex-Packer Jonathan Owens, ex-Packer being the most interesting thing about him) and a few field goals. The defensive touchdown came when Will Levis was getting sacked and flipped the ball to a bears defender for a pick six. It may have been the dumbest play I've ever seen.
- Caleb Williams was 14/29 for 93 yards in his debut. The best 3-man wide receiver corps in the NFL managed a total of 10 catches for 76 yards. Yuck. The good news, for Bears fans, is that Caleb Williams excelled as a runner, at least as far as averaging the same number of yards per carry as the team's prized free agency acquisition D'Andre Swift: three.
- Our favorite analytics superstar turned kick returner turned geriatric wide receiver turned running back, Velus Jones Jr., had two carries for 11 yards and a catch for eight yards. He did not have the big kick return that led to one of the field goals.
- On the defensive side, Darrell Taylor immediately made a fool out of me with two sacks. Next week, I won't have to look up his name, probably.
- Jaylon Johnson started out his first year post huge contract well, giving up just nine receiving yards and getting a pick.
Wisconsin Ties
- TJ Edwards had a monster game with 15 tackles, including two for a loss. His big money partner, Tremaine Edmunds, had four tackles. Jack Sanborn played just three snaps. Let's get him to Green Bay.
Next Week
The Bears take on the Texans on Sunday night.
Vikings
The Vikings throttled the Giants, 28-6. I can already see Brian Daboll wearing Cowboys gear as Bill Belichick's offensive coordinator next year.
Game Notes
- Sam Darnold completed his first 12 passes and was 13/14 for 151 yards and a touchdown in the first half. In a sort of reverse-Kirk Cousins, he regressed a little in garbage time, finishing 19/24 for 208 yard with 2 TDs and a pick. Darnold seemed like a revelation to Vikings fans but keep in mind the other QB of the day was Derek Carr. It's week one.
- Sadly, Aaron Jones also had a big day with 94 yards and a score on 14 carries. Back-up Ty Chandler had a horrendous 17 yards on eight carries.
- The defense also looked great, though again it's hard to tell against the Giants whether this was real or preseason week 4. Former Badger Andrew Van Ginkel had a sack and a pick six and Pat Jones II had two sacks. Rookie Dallas Turner also turned in a one-sack performance. The Vikings didn't need lucky plays, like the Bears, to win this game they were just far better than the Giants.
- If I had to reevaluate my training camp notions of the Vikings I probably wouldn't put them in the super bowl just yet but I'd lean toward moving them up a notch. Let's see how Brian Flores does against an NFL offense and how long it takes Sam Darnold to turn into a pumpkin.
Wisconsin Ties
- We talked about Van Ginkel and Aaron Jones so the only other news is that Ty Summers had a special teams tackle. Exciting.
Next Week
The Vikings will find out how legitimate this team is against the 49ers.
Lions
The Lions pulled off a 26-20 OT victory over the Rams.
Regulation Notes
- Jared Goff had a chance to get revenge, again, against the team that unceremoniously dumped him and he unceremoniously dumped in the bed for most of the second half. Goff was 17/27 for 207 yards, a TD and a pick (and another dropped pick with four minutes left in the fourth). This was sort of a classic Goff game. He did not look good fo rmost of the second half and then the Lions pulled away with some schemed up passes and runs on the last drive of regulation and overtime.
- The big breakout player for the Lions was Jameson Williams, who everyone has been projecting to be a breakout player for eight months. The third-year receiver had five catches for 121 yards and a TD - he has the ability to take this offense to the next level. He made up for the Sun God and LaPorta no-showing. The Sun God had 13 yards on three catches and Sam LaPorta had 45 on four, including a big 33-yard play on the final drive of the fourth.
- Just like last year, the Lions used David Montgomery as their bell cow back and Jahmyr Gibbs as the change-up/pass-catching back. Unlike last year, neither back could get it going in regulation and both averaged under four yards per carry.
- The big question for prognosticators about this Lions team was whether year four with Aaron Glenn would be when the defense finally broke out. It looked the part early in the first quarter and then Pula Nacua went down and it seemed like they may pitch a shutout. Then Matt Stafford turned on and led the Rams to 17 second-half points on a 34/49 for 317 yard night.
- Interestingly, the Ram offense got going when they decided to ditch their original game plan and start running the ball right at Detroit. They still had horrific run numbers but tying that run game to that pass game is what makes the offense work.
Overtime Notes
- Overtime was like a different game. The Lions showed why many have them as the SB favorite with runs of 12, 21, 9, 6 and 8 yards (along with a 10-yard pass) to score against the exhausted Rams defensive line and end the game.
Wisconsin Ties
- Sadly, as far as I can tell the Lions have no former Packers or other Wisconsin ties again this year.
Next Week
The Lions play Tampa Bay.

Mike, You need to edit this article ASAP. There's three repetitions of the Willis Bears film and other stuff. Article is a mess because of it.

Come on Spock, that’s called humor…You see, the play was so horrid and so stupid it needed to be shown multiple times times.

Sorry, I’m wondering just how many games the Giants and Titans will win. Both were truly execrable at QB, though Levis’s mental meltdown was untouchable. The next worst QB might have played for the Bears. However, week one does not make a rookie’s career, but he looked more like Fields than a QB heading for Canton.
The Lions were surprisingly vulnerable. Unless the Rams are much better than I think, the Lions didn’t seem like the juggernaut they think they are in week 1. However, of the teams in this division, they are the only one I think earned at least some credit against a credible opponent despite the Bears and Vikings winning.
Jones’ performance did show how he can make a poor OL look adequate. That might be the biggest home truth for Packer fans to take away from those games.
As an aside, one wonders, however, how many yards Wilson could have got on Friday if LaFleur hadn’t stopped giving him snaps after 3 runs averaging north of 13 yards per carry until late in the second half when he graciously added one attempt for 9 yards to finish with 11.5 per attempt. Jones averaged a mere 6.7. Jacobs, 5.3.
Somewhat tongue in cheek, but if Wilson keeps performing (given opportunities) he needs snaps. He should be a bigger part of the plan next week and we need to go with the hot hand if there is one. We can’t afford to sit players that are performing like that. We might have changed the outcome on Friday had we stuck with him, but we certainly will need the most effective runner out there in the coming weeks. It was maddening that we finished that drive not only with a failed run up the gut, but substituted the back averaging 2 feet a carry at that point to do so.

We had 160 yards on the ground.

Reed had the one big 33 yard TD run, Wilson 46 yards on 4 attempts, Jacobs 84 on 16. Your point? Wilson’s first 3 carries came at a time when we were averaging 2 feet per attempt. At half time Jacobs had 6 caries for 4 yards while Wilson as 37 on 3.
Jacobs did have 10 attempts for 80 Yards in the second half, but that is still significantly lower than Wilson’s average in the first half or than his single 9 yard run in the second. In a close game with the non Reed offense spluttering, that’s quite a singular differential for any coach to ignore.

Correct. Context is always important. 79 yards on 5 run plays is prolific and efficient. But what is the rest of the story?
If Matt gets lulled into "160 yards rushing" as acceptable and ignores the overall lack of effectiveness by his OL, Sunday will be a frustrating home opener.
When only 2 out of your 5 OL starters play consistently well, you have 3 spots not doing their jobs to help win... with the added danger of getting your QB hurt.
Wilson played on Friday as he did during the preseason....he is very quick and has a talent to read the best block in his vision and dart to it. And when the first tacklers arrive, he keeps his feet churning and gets extra yards on his own. He's a tough out with the ball.

Isn't 84 divided by 16 over 5.0 yards/carry.?
Look, Jacobs has led the league in rushing. I think it would be stupid to give the ball to him less so that we can give it to Wilson more.
How did we get so many rushing yards with such bad Oline play?
Coldworld
September 09, 2024 at 12:21 pm
Tom, Jenkins and, yes, Morgan played pretty well. 3/5 doesn’t make an OL (or half if you accept Morgan wasn’t full time). That is the problem, and it impacted both time and pocket stability as well as the run.
That was never my point here, which was to point out the criminal lack of use of Wilson based upon the timing of his performance and magnitude of that performance on the day in a game where that differential could have changed the outcome.

it was at the minimum MLF not reading the game. Wilson gashed them, and MLF let up off the throttle. He fell in love with his play sheet rather than watching what actually worked. I have no stake whether it's Wilson or Jacobs, but if something is working, goddamit, keep doing it.
That said, I thought despite the slow start, Jacobs looked a beast. A definite upgrade over Aaron Jones.

"fell in love with his play sheet rather than watching what actually worked."
Valid critique.
I'm not sure MLF applies the same standards he holds his players to to himself. He has "areas of opportunity" to improve, and this is one of them.

So, the 29 points and 440 yards was accomplished with 3/5 of a line.???
Your point, that we should have given the ball to the Pro Bowl RB less so that we could give it to the backup more, is noted.

Give it to the hot hand. It’s funny, a lot of people used to say that about Aaron Jones early on. If a guy is getting g it done, I don’t give a rats behind what his reputation or background is. Ride it till It stops working or something else works better.
Yes, a D that had as many issues as ours, 3 turnovers and 3/5 of a line playing well. I might mention the performance of a certain Mr Reed as well.

Perhaps, though none were mine, because he’s not been here for a while now, had less overall yards than Jacobs and less yards per carry than Wilson? He did have one TD and show he doesn’t need a good OL , although Wilson might have made that case too, had he been given more chances.

Good question. I just thought after all the hype about Josh Jacobs being the greatest thing since sliced bread that he did not live up to the expectations. The first half was pitiful for his first appearance as a Packer. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am sure the Vikings are happy to have him after his opening with them. What did we get in return for him?
Leatherhead
September 10, 2024 at 11:27 am
He averaged over 7 yards/carry, on the road, in his debut.
What did we get in return for Jones? The money to sign a younger, better player. Jacobs is younger and has led the league in rushing, something Jones has never come close to.
You're getting worked up over the first half of the first game? My suggestion would be more alcohol.

Bears: Is there something wrong with defensive and special teams touchdowns? The Bears have been historically good at those things. Six points is six points. Wouldn't you like to see the Packers get a few more of those? It would be real helpful for the next few games...
Lions: They came out in overtime looking they were shot from a cannon--on just about every play. Once again, wouldn't you love to see the Packers do that on the ground a little more often, especially when it comes to closing out games?

In regards to Love's injury, I wonder if this 3-4 weeks while others are actually saying GB will keep him out for 10 games isn't a bit hyperbolic? Aaron Jones suffered the exact same injury 3-4 times since he was drafted. I think He missed a total of 8 games combined. He missed one game once, 2 games twice and 3 games once. He's a running back who really needs those knees to work correctly. Depending on what grade the sprain is, most 1-2 grade MCL sprains, depending on age, weight and position of the player are more like 1-4 weeks. With the 9 days off and missing the home opener, I can see him back against the Titans and for sure against the Vikings. That's my hope anyway.

Week One, which will be largely forgotten around Week Ten. Unless the injury to Love is a lot more serious. And for those who miss Jones, like me, behold that Jacobs had 84 yards, Wilson tore off some big runs, and Reed had a 33 yard TD run. Looking at opponents, who had a tougher opponent than the Packers? Now, we have to hope that Lafleur can emphasize the strengths of Willis, and with some extra prep time, they can come up with a plan that will confound the Colts. They traded for Willis for a reason, and though this is unexpected, they have to play with the players they have, and not get down on themselves or throw a "pity party".

Interesting that we had a backup QB who kept Will Levis off the field in College, and Michael Pratt beat Caleb Williams in a big game. Whereas Malik Willis couldn't even earn the backup spot behind Will Levis.
The whole thing just seems very strange to me.

Last weekend SUCKED for Packers fans. We leave 20 points on the field. The defense can't get off the field (where have I heard that before). Love looked "meh" after the new contract. Both our OL and DL got their asses kicked. We couldn't pressure the QB. Jaire got his ass kicked. Then, Love gets hurt.
Then all three NFCN teams won on Sunday. Poop.
Long season ahead. I hope we can scrape 2 wins in the next 3 weeks, but it's going to be hard.

you're my new favorite Packers writer. I don't know how new you are but you're new to me. don't be sorry about Aaron Jones. he wanted to stay in green bay. it's not his fault the packer's brainless trust kicked the best back in franchise history to the curb. for my money, when healthy, Jones is still the best back in the NFL.

Week 1 in the NFL.
The Saints led all teams with 44 points.
Tampa hung 37 on Washington.
Philadelphia and Buffalo scored 34.
Dallas scored 33.
Teams that went over 30 were 5-0
The Packers and Texans, 29, were followed by a half-dozen teams with 27 or 28. Indy lost a game where they scored 27, but the rest were all winning teams.
Packers should have won this game. They had their chances, they could certainly have played better.
Edit: After the Monday Night Game, Six teams scored 30 or more and they all won. Seven other teams scored between 25-30, and five of them won. The teams that scored at least 25 points were 11-2 last weekend.
Moral of the Story: If you aren't scoring at least 25, you aren't scoring enough. And if you are scoring 25, and you aren't winning, you need to take a look at what the defense is doing.

I will be shocked if they let him play on Sunday, even with a very minor MCL. However, it’s very good news and suggests he may start non contact practice soon.
