Around the NFC North: Preseason Week 1

Football's back. Isn't it great?

It was a week for new quarterbacks that the various inferior fan bases of the North have claimed are better than Jordan Love. At least on their current contract. Yes, that includes JJ McCarthy. There are Viking fan dinguses who have tweeted that they'd rather have JJ McCarthy than Jordan Love. Of course, change is hard, and for Vikings fans maybe having a shot at a playoff win would be too much change. Anyway, let's get into the games.

Lions

  • I got endless crap from my Lions fan friends when they drafted the geriatric Hendon Hooker about how he was better than Love. It's his second season now and he's fully recovered from the ACL tear he had in college, so, of course, the Lions started Nate Sudfeld this weekend. I know what you're thinking. I also didn't realize he was still in the league. Lions fans certainly wish he wasn't. Sudfeld was 13/24 for 96 yards and a pick. And he had a long of 26 yards. Exclude that play and Sudfeld was 12/23 for 70 yards. Less than three yards per attempt! Sheesh.
  • Hooker didn't perform much better, also averaging 4 yards per attempt. I would guess that we'll get to see him start the next game.
  • The team's best runner on the night was college safety Sione Vaki - it would be great for them if he was good because Jahmyr Gibbs just reinjured a hammie and we know how that goes.
  • The defense looked good and the two rookie corners (Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw) both played well - of course they both left practice hurt on Monday.
  • Probably the team's most exciting player, new kicker Jake Bates, hit a 53-yard field goal in the game.

Bears

  • I know the Bears played in the Hall of Fame game and when that game happens it's exciting that football is back (as long as the paint didn't harden on the turf) but you have to have some sort of psychosis to analyze what the Bears' third through sixth string did in the Hall of Fame game.
  • Let's go to the game where Bears fans got to see their highly drafted QB in a fun new offense. Mitch Trubisky was 10/18 for 82 yards. He didn't play well per se, but he definitely played. That much cannot be denied.
  • Caleb Williams had Bears fans sprinting to their keyboards to tweet about how he's the best QB they've ever had. After one preseason drive. And can you blame them? He probably is the best QB they've ever had. That third down throw he hit downfield is better than anything Mitch Trubisky or Justin Fields ever put together. Hell, last year Bears fans were sprinting to their keyboards to slobber about a Fields preseason performance where he didn't even throw the ball past the line of scrimmage. I say let them have their optimism. Sure, bookmark a few tweets to throw back in their face after Williams is sacked for the seventh time against us, but just look at Chicago right now: Zach LaVine is the best player on the Bulls, the White Sox lost like 37 games straight and Pritzker wasn't even considered for VP. Caleb Williams preseason highlights are all they have!
  • The story of the preseason for the defense is who will be their second-best pass rusher. Fifth-round rookie Austin Booker threw his hat in the ring in this game with 2.5 sacks. That second rusher spot is the team's biggest and maybe only weakness on defense so it would be pretty annoying if they filled it with a good fifth-round pick.

Vikings

  • The Vikings' foray into young quarterbacking happened when rookie first-round pick JJ McCarthy took over for Sam Darnold late in the first quarter. McCarthy was able to show off his best college skills, handing the ball off 13 times to Kene Nwangwu and Ty Chandler. He also threw the ball 17 times for 188 yards, 2 TDs and a pick. Not bad for a first appearance. Darnold was 4/8 for 59 yards. It will be interesting to see if McCarthy gets any first-team reps in this preseason.
  • Kene Nwangwu was a great college back and has been one of the league's best kick returners over the past few seasons. He broke off a 48-yard touchdown run in this one. Nwangwu is incredibly fast and could immediately bring another dynamic to this offense that Alexander Mattison never did.
  • The team's other first-round pick after McCarthy, Dallas Turner, played 22 snaps and had a sack. Turner may not start right away for the Vikings but they're expecting him to be the future of the pass rush.
  • Soon after the game, and a corner injury, the Vikings called Stephon Gillmore in for a visit. Gillmore did not look great against the Packers in the playoffs with the Cowboys last year. Let's hope they sign him.

I will say that Caleb Williams played better than I expected. He looked comfortable and he did some good things. It will be interesting if he keeps improving. If Caleb keeps getting better the Bears will be a force and could challenge for the division. Time will tell. Their one weak point is the TE position.

JJ McCarthy also looked better than I expected. I still believe JJ will be a better QB than most of the analyst predict but it will take a little time. The Vikings looked better all around but the defense could be their limiter. If JJ keeps getting better he might be starting the season. I was impressed that Justin Jefferson said he would let JJ use JJ.

If I bet on football (which of course I encourage all of you to do, because easy money, amiright?) I would place a large wager that Bo Nix wildly outperforms Caleb Williams.

I checked PFF, and they've got Cole Kmet ranked as the 11th best TE in the league (719 receiving yards last year), and their second TE Gerald Everett at #17. That seems high for Everett (who played for the Chargers last year), but still, the Bears appear to be in okay shape at that position.

Last year's opener with the Bears was a joyful thing. After a long summer of rising expectations in Chicagoland, the crash was one of those Schadenfreude moments with a lot of Freude. So, how excited are Bears' fans this year?

Here are some words from a (presumably sane) writer for the Sun-Times: Caleb Williams "showed innate pocket poise, elite play-making ability both in and out of structure, rare arm talent and velocity, and the type of unique mind that allows him to be both surgeon and artist as a quarterback.... a glimpse into the unique craftsmanship with which Williams plays the position.... It's the type of paint-outside-the-lines quarterbacking that has everyone who is even remotely near the Bears' orbit excited for what's to come.... I mean, he's second to none."

Both a surgeon and an artist.

His unearthly talents only exceeded by his exceptional good looks and bionic mind. It's as though they forget their helmet has a C on it.

I grew up hating the Bears as Halas roamed the sidelines smoking. I love taunting the Bears. But truth be told, if the Bears improved I'd be pleased for them. Their fans aren't nearly as obnoxious as Viking fans, they actually have some history of winning, they play outside in a FREEZING stadium, and they aren't pathetic losers like the Lions who I've seen for a generations wearing paper bags over their heads. I think we all can agree that the Lions are due to turn back into their historical selves. Past results and all that. Therefore, good luck with your new quarterback and your totally beige head coach Chicago. I mean, they can't miss on quarterbacks forever, can they?

I grew up thinking Halas was a bad guy, but then later when I learned of how he helped the Packers and did things like the Shriner games. So I usually root for the Bears to win 15 times a season now.

Darnold for McCarthy may be a blessing in disguise. But it does leave Minnesota thin at QB. Currently backing up Darnold is.........Nick (Nothing Special) Mullens. I see Minnesota crashing into the basement this year.

Here's some reality.....if Caleb Williams is better than Justin Fields, the Bears are going to be a problem, and not just for us. I mean, I know the Bears will find a way to screw things us, but until then, it's a problem.

They all have good pocket poise until you tent-peg them into the turf a couple of times.

There are old QBs, and bold QBs, but no old, bold QBs.

1: Kudos the the commenters in this thread; there's actually some objectivity! I'm shocked.

About the Bears:

2: Caleb Williams did look good, though obviously a very small sample size, so I think most people aren't saving a HOF jacket for him just yet, even most Bears fans. Still, even objective and experienced commentators noted all of the small things that CW did that were pretty great (see 'The QB School' analysis on YouTube, awesome no-holds-barred critiques). And he actually looked like a modern QB out there, not a 'runner/athlete that throws the ball'.

It's also worth noting that CW looked good despite the uneven performance of the O-line (IMHO). Oh, and I'll trade you Nate Davis for a grilled-cheese sandwich at this point. Anyone want an overpaid, overrated, 'injury-prone' RG? Let me know!

3: In the NFC North the TE position is competitive, with each team having a case for some advantage. But...the Bears have one of the better TE groups in the league, so I don't know what some of you are smoking but you need to get a new supplier.
