Around the NFC North: Hall of Fame Game
Real football...kind of.
By Mike Price

There's no looking back now. The Lions played something like a real game this week and going forward we'll have games to talk about every week until January. Nice.
Lions
- The biggest news of the game was how well Trey Lance played. The former top pick fo the 49ers is now on the Chargers and led the Chargers to a 34-7 victory behind a 13/20 for 120 yards and two tuds (in three quarters) line. It's enough for me to says cancel the season for the Lions, really.
- Obviously, as an extra pre-season game the Lions didn't play many guys who will have a big impact this season. The leading snap-getters were Dominic Lovett and Kyle Allen on offense and Ezekiel Turner and Anthony Pittman on defense. Couldn't tell you a single thing about any of those guys. Other than they weren't good in this game.
- Rookie Isaac TeSlaa, a Jeff Janis type, had 46 receiving yards in the first half. TeSlaa apparently grew up a Lions fan and wore a custom jersey to his visit with the team before the draft.
- Sadly, our favorite from last off-season, Siono Vaki, was hurt and missed the game. He's got a long road to hoe to make this team so let's hope he plays next week.
Bears
- The Bears had family fest which is definitely a knockoff of Family Night, which the Packers had the night before. Family fest is closer to a pre-season game than the practice that Family NIght has evolved into.
- The defense continued to dominate the offense. Not only did the offense struggle to move the ball, but they dealt with several pre-snap penalties. It's definitely going to be a while until every one is on the same page with this scheme. Tight end Cole Kmet, probably the most-seasoned vet on the offense, talked about how much nervous energy there is on the offense. Sometimes when one of these control freak coaches moves on from a veteran-led team to a young rebuild it doesn't work out. We can only hope.
- Sadly, it sounds like Dennis Allen isn't having any of those problems and the Bears defense looks great with plenty of stunts, disguise and different fronts. Allen is one of the best coordinators in the league and the Bears definitely had talent for him at some spots.
- If we want to be optimistic about the Bears' offense (why???), having a mildly above average veteran and a top-12 pick at tight end could make it really hard for defenses to match against them this season. You go big and they'll spread out or even just pass with both guys in line. You try to match with nickle and De'Andre Slow gets an open lane for 3.6 yards. On second thought, maybe it won't be that hard.
- Easily the best moment of the week was Caleb Williams missing the net from short distance like five straight times and then freaking out. Insane.
Vikings
- J.J. McCarthy has bounced back from the horrendous practice where he had like 11 interceptions or whatever it was. After a week of the defense outperforming the offense every single day, McCarthy had his best day on Saturday and impressed the bigger crowds on the weekend (though there was no event since the Vikings obviously don't care about families like the Packers do).
- McCarthy even got involved in a fight after a pair of no-name linebackers hit Aaron Jones after the whistle. Jones should demand a trade.
- Not much other news that we haven't already covered (it's time for the game to start), though it is interesting that with Justin jefferson absent, McCarthy seems to be developing more chemistry with Jordan Addison. This is Addison's put up or shut up year if he wants a $30mm per contract.

Yeah, I think Caleb Williams might want to spend a little more time working on his accuracy instead of painting his nails blue. I understand that it's to honor his mother, who is a nail "technician", but it's still kind of weird...Only the Bears could have this many choice bites at the QB apple over the years and still not manage to succeed, at least yet.

Caleb is a hero baller headcase. I'm not worried about him at all right now.

As with all Bear quarterbacks, i want to see him fail in amusing fashion. Caleb’s ego makes it all the more fun when the Bears flop.

I talked to a Bears fan on the golf course on Friday and he was telling me how Love is no Favre or Rodgers. All I said to him was give him time and maybe he will be. I was going to say something about Williams but I was smart and kept my mouth shut. I can do the smart thing sometimes.

I had a similar conversation with a bare fan when he said Love isn't Favre or Rodgers. I told him after their 2nd year as Packer starters, Favre or Rodgers weren't yet Favre or Rodgers, respectively, either.
And I told him, unlike the bares, the Packers do the best job in the NFL preparing their QBs to become successful starters.
Neyuk, neyuk, neyuk!

I guess our replies should have been well Williams is no Sid Luckman. After all he was their only championship caliber QB.

"It's enough for me to says cancel the season for the Lions, really. "
We always used to say about the Packers that you're the division champ until someone knocks you off...right now the Lions are the division champs. Campbell will keep them buzzing, so I think the "they lost two coordinators" line where some internet gurus are saying the Lions will be a 9-10 win team is being overplayed. That said, you can't burn hot like that forever. The Lions will be good. Not 15 wins good, but good.
"Sometimes when one of these control freak coaches moves on from a veteran-led team to a young rebuild it doesn't work out."
I'll go back to what some of the interviewers said about Johnson: he's introverted, a bit nerdy, and kind of weird. It might be the "well, we didn't want him anyway" stuff, but some have said they had concerns about his ability to command a locker room. That Johnson benefited from the strong personality (Campbell) above him. We've seen other coaches of Johnson's ilk (Nagy, Trestman) start ok but fizzle in Chicago.
"Sadly, it sounds like Dennis Allen isn't having any of those problems and the Bears defense looks great with plenty of stunts, disguise and different fronts."
Remember who they're showing against: the Bears offense is not good. If the offense can't put pressure on you to score, it hampers a good defense...and an offense that puts pressure on you to keep up can make a so-so defense look better. Dennis Allen has been around for awhile and teams know what to expect from him, too. You've still got to stop it, but opposing coaches know what's coming. Remember Matt Eberflus was a good defensive coach and play caller, too, and it didn't get Chicago very far.
"McCarthy even got involved in a fight after a pair of no-name linebackers hit Aaron Jones after the whistle. "
Whatever.

Saw a good quote over on Defector yesterday re: our Chicago friends. In discussing the Bears QB development cycle, it mentioned that Matt Eberflus "exhibited all the institutional control of a middle-school substitute teacher who just farted while sneezing." Made me lol.

have to admire Drew. He's both funny and a viking fan, a rare occurrence.

Caleb is a fan of Rodgers-perhaps he should place a call.

Dan Campbell reminds me somewhat of baseball manager Billy Martin. They light a fire under their teams for a couple of years, but flame out quickly. Intense coaches have a short lifespan, although McVay is an exception.
I’ve said many times—Campbell is just a big Dufus, with a talented team and the (previous) luxury of two excellent coordinators.
Go Packers!!!

Campbell is no dummy, he knows how to play people into thinking that. He has done something few coaches before him could and that is take the Lions to the playoffs in back to back years.
The HOF has more than a couple of intense coaches who had long careers.
